There is an application form on the Hertfordshire Scouts Website. Please ensure that you provide the district as ‘Potters Bar & District’ and the Unit as ‘Tartan Phoenix ESU.’

Although we assume permission for meetings during our normal meeting times, we have consents that we ask all parents to complete in our online Membership Application Form. Your permission is sometimes needed for specific events, camps and activities that may take place at a different place or time. You will be asked to complete a parental consent form in such circumstances. The Scout Association is run by volunteers and it encourages parents and carers to assist in the leadership team on a regular or an occasional basis. Any support that you or your family can offer scouting is welcomed, appreciated and valued. Help is particularly appreciated with practical skills, outdoor activities, as well as with transport, administration and fundraising.

Four of our Explorers Attended the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden, 2011!

Here at Tartan Phoenix ESU we are committed to giving all our Members the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Established in 1956 by its Founder and Patron, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a voluntary, non- competitive programme of practical cultural and adventurous activities.

In addition to our website,, we use a secure online service called My.Scout for our administration. It displays our programme, event information, and allows online payments. You can also sign up to our events and camps using the system. A My.Scout invite will be Emailed to you after completing the online application form. An instructional video is available here:

The Tartan Phoenix Explorer Scout Unit is run by the Explorer Scout Leader (ESL) - James - and currently two Assistant Explorer Scout Leaders, Andrew and Paul. We are based at KCM Church in Potters Bar, but scouts from any troop in Potters Bar & District (Brookmans Park, Northaw, Cuffley etc.) can join us when they reach 14, as well as those who’ve never been in scouts before.

We meet once a week during the school term, and occasionally outside of term on Friday nights usually from 8pm to 10pm. For most of our meetings we’re at the King Charles The Martyr Church Hall. We do however get out quite a bit so we don’t spend every Friday indoors! We issue programmes but these are liable to change. If you’re unsure, you can check our My.Scout or our website for updates (these updates will also be texted to Explorer mobiles) or even follow us on Twitter (@tartanexplorers). Please don’t leave it until Friday evening find out what’s going on so you have plenty of notice in case, for example, your child needs to bring something with them or we are meeting elsewhere. We will always give reasonable notice. We require an online application form on our website to be completed before investiture.

You can purchase the Explorer uniform shirt from Leejoys in Potters Bar High Street, or you can order online at We don’t insist on the wearing of the official uniform trousers but ask that dark jeans/trousers are worn for our meetings. For ceremonial events, school trousers & black shoes are required. Badges & scarves will be provided to Explorers upon investiture. Badge positions for sewing are shown above and on our website.

We charge subscriptions (‘subs’) to cover costs of equipment and hire of the Church Hall. This also includes the explorer scouts’ annual membership fee paid to headquarters for the day-to- day running of The Scout Association and includes insurance for all members. Subscription fees are £8 per month and are collected by standing order. The Standing Order form is available at We only take payments for camps and events etc. through the My.Scout system. Just login to My.Scout and click on ‘payments’ - all payments due are listed.
