MEASURING UP!

by Sarah Bates

If it can be measured, someone has probably measured it – and chances are that someone else tried to beat the record afterwards… So don’t wear a long face, enjoy these neat extremes! • 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m) – that’s the record set by American Robert Ludlow before his death in 1940. He is the world’s tallest man in recorded history. • The record for longest hair in the world belongs to Xie Qiuping of China. Her hair was 18 ft 5.54 in (5.627 m) as of 2004. • The world’s oldest documented woman was Jeanne Calment of France. She died in August 1997 at 122 years and 164 days old. • The world’s longest causeway is over twentythree miles (thirty-seven meters) long, and Louisianans might have already guessed it’s name – that’s right, it’s the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in New Orleans. • The world’s longest fence is six feet (1.82 m) high and runs for 3,488 mi (5,614 km) to keep the dingoes away from the sheep in Australia. turn the page for more!

It is named after the Biblical character of Methuselah and is estimated to be about 4,800 years old. • There is an older tree – well, root system. The current tree isn’t ancient, but its root system is estimated to have taken hold in Sweden approximately 9,550 years ago after the last ice age. It was discovered in Swedish scientists in 2004. • The world’s longest fingernails belong to Shridar Chillal of India. His thumbnail alone is over four feet long! He’s been growing his nails since 1952 and his hand is permanently disfigured from the weight of them. (continued on page 4)

Out of Touch

I guess it is true what they say about payback. I can remember as a teen thinking how out of it my parents were. I never even considered that there was life after thirty, much less fifty, sixty or seventy. So now that I am in one of those uncool decades, I shouldn’t be surprised that my children and grandchildren assume that I am completely out of touch. But as I look at the differences in my generation and theirs, it seems that being in touch has taken on a whole new meaning. We all need human touch, but the trend for several years seems to be striving to eliminate the need for any human contact. The fastest service by telephone is to “press one” for an automated response rather than being placed on eternity hold for an operator. This often results in unresolved problems and elevated blood pressure rather than discussing your problem and working out a solution that is fair to everyone involved. The fastest way to contact anyone is by texting or email. I enjoy these forms of communication but they are not a replacement for making the effort to see or talk to that person directly. We value things that require effort. If someone in our immediate circle of friends is missing for any length of time, we check up on them. But if one of our email buddies drops off, we may not even notice. In the past when we faced tough times we were able to ask our church family to pray for and with us. Eventually, we were all asked to call the prayer lines. Now those lines refer you to the websites. That is not a realistic substitution. Is it possible that part of our current financial crisis is because none of us were talking about our concerns and fears? Did we do our researching and investing with a few clicks on the computer rather than sitting down and talking face to face and looking a person in the eye as they sold their product? We may not be able to clean up the universal mess that we seem to be in, but what about working on our immediate circle, and getting them to help with our local circle and getting them to help with our county then our state? Before you know it we will have reached out and touched the world. If you need help with creditors or creating a realistic budget and setting attainable goals, contact Credit Counseling Advocates, Inc for a free counseling evaluation. 3103 Alma Hwy. It stretches and winds over 3,768 mi (6,000 km) across China, is 25 ft (7.62 m) tall and is up to 30 ft (9.14) thick in some sections. • The world’s longest snake ever found was a python in Indonesia. “And in green underwood and cover, blossom by blossom the spring begins.” Algernon Charles Swinburne 1837 - 1909

In the Garden with Janet B. Carson

My yellow Carolina jasmine which has just finished blooming needs pruning badly. It is on a nine foot wrought iron arbor built for it. The underside of the vine looks dead. The outside is beautifully green. My question is how far should I have it pruned --all the way back to the original vine? The original plant has three vines from the original stump each of which are about 1 1/2 inches each in diameter. The person who has pruned it in the past has, for the last season or so, pruned it back about 12” t 15” of the green part. “Carolina jasmine or Carolina jessamine – (Gelsemium sempervirens) is a prolific grower. Prune it as hard as you think is needed to keep it in bounds until next year after bloom. You don’t want to continually prune the plants throughout the season or you end up with fewer flowers the following spring. As with all spring blooming plants, this one sets its flower buds in late summer/early fall. Prune only once a year after bloom. I would consider staggering the pruning cuts to encourage new growth at various heights. Pruning only at the top causes the upper vine to shade out the lower portions, which results in no foliage. Staggered pruning heights should help to get the underside full as well. I live in central Arkansas. Which ground cover fills in the best and is most resistant to weeds? “Resistance to weeds has a lot to do with how dense the groundcover is and whether it is growing in sun or shade. While you are establishing any groundcover, weeds and grass will be more of an issue. They are also always worse in the sun than in the shade. Rapidly spreading groundcovers for sun include Mazus, liriope, Asiatic jasmine and sedums. In the shade I like Ajuga, lysimachia (creeping Jenny), small leafed variegated ivy, pachysandra and mondo grass. Make sure whichever plant you choose that you prepare the site well, removing as much weed and grass debris as possible prior to planting. Mulch after planting to help prevent weeds, but monitor weekly until the groundcover has filled in. Hoeing out the weeds as they appear is much easier than trying to control them once they are firmly ensconced into the groundcover.

JAPAN

TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:

You might have known that this country is composed of over 3,000 islands or that it’s highest peak is Mount Fuji, but get ready to stretch your brain as Tidbits takes you around the globe to learn about the country of Japan. • If you ever read about the National Diet of Japan, they aren’t talking about the food! The Diet is Japan’s bicameral legislature. On that note, did you know that the word diet is also defined as a legislative assembly? • The Japanese call Japan “Nippon” or “Nihon” meaning “the sun’s origin” and is the origins of the phrase “land of the rising sun.” • Ever seen the YKK imprint on the zipper of your jeans? It’s the initials of a Japanese Company! Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha (or Yoshida Kogyo Co., Ltd.) was founded in Japan in 1934 and is the world’s largest manufacturer of zippers today. • In June of 2001, Japanese farmers impressed the world with their ingenuity upon displaying their square watermelons to the public. Grown in glass boxes, these cubic fruit store better in the refrigerator and were considered quite the novelty. You might not like the price, though. In 2001, the square watermelons were selling for around 10,000 yen, which is approximately $82 a piece! • Did you know that the Atari logo is a stylized representation of Japan’s Mount Fuji? • Since we’re talking about Mt. Fuji – did you know that it is privately owned? The uppermost portion of the peak belongs to the Shinto shrine Fujisan Hongu Sengentaisha. • One last fact about Mt. Fuji – it is also an active volcano! Don’t worry though - the last eruption was over 302 years ago in December of 1707.
