Q: What does the camel say when serving tea? A: One hump or two?

Purple frogs? Sightless amphibians? Things that go bump in the night? Well, maybe not that, but Tidbits has certainly compiled some interesting facts on some pretty weird animals. • One of the most endangered species in the world is the Yangtze river dolphin, locally called the baiji. The dolphin may already be extinct, as a recent survey was unable to locate any dolphins in the river. • The olm is a blind amphibian that can live up to one hundred years. It can go ten years without food and can be found in subterranean waters in Italy and Croatia. • The dugong is related to the manatee. It will perch on its tail in the water and stick its head above – a trait that some researchers believe inspired the myth of mermaids. • A giraffe can clean its ears with its tongue. • A group of geese on the ground is called a gaggle. A group of geese in the sky is called a skein. turn the page for more!

They are also monogamous and mate for life. • Adèlie penguins can live up to twenty years. • The kiwi is also a flightless bird that mates for life and has the most developed sense of smell of modern birds. • Crocodiles are color blind. • Owls are the only bird with the ability to see the color blue. • Giraffes have no vocal chords. • The Purple Frog is an Indian frog that wasn’t discovered until 2003 because of a very unique trait. Purple Frogs live thirteen feet beneath the ground and only come up for two weeks during the monsoon season to mate – making them very hard to find! • The horn of a narwhal is actually a tusk. It is rare, but not impossible, for a narwhal to have two tusks like an elephant. • The solendon is a mammal in Cuba and Hispaniola that injects venom into its prey through its teeth. It is the only mammal that does so. • The Bumblebee Bat is so small it can fit inside a bottle cap. • The kakapo, a New Zealand native, averages at eight pounds and is the heaviest parrot in the world. There are approximately sixty kakapos left in the world today. • The fish with the glowing antenna in Finding Nemo? That’s a female Angler. The male is 1/20th her size and spends his life attached to and slowly fusing with the female. • A house fly only lives about two weeks! • The heart of a blue while is about the size of a small car. • The echidna and platypus are the only egg-laying mammals in the world. An egg-laying mammal is called a monotreme.

Are You Due $250?

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2008 has a little something for seniors: a onetime payment of $250 for all 55 million of us. Here are a few things you need to know: Who will receive the payment? Nearly everybody who collected Social Security, SSI, Veterans or Railroad retirement benefits during November or December 2008 or January 2009. If you didn’t start getting benefits until February, you don’t qualify for the payment. When will I get my payment? Sometime during the last week of May or first week of June, or sooner. Will the amount be added to my regular payment? No, it will be a separate payment. If you have automatic deposit or Direct Express, you’ll receive the money in the same way. Will I and my spouse both get a payment? Yes, if you’re both getting benefits already, you’ll both receive a payment. Do I have to do anything to get the money? No, it’s automatic. Therefore, if someone contacts you and says they can “help” you get your payment if you’ll give them your personal information, or if you see an ad offering help, it’s a scam. If you suspect a scam, contact the Social Security fraud hotline at 1-800269-0271. If I receive multiple benefits, for example Social Security as well as Railroad benefits, will I get multiple payments? No, it’s one payment per person. What if I don’t get my payment? If you haven’t received your payment by the end of May, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 AFTER June 4 and let it know. Or you can call your local Social Security office. If you only receive VA benefits and don’t get your payment, contact the VA after that date. EVER WONDER ...........Why isn’t there mouse flavored cat food?

Adults were originally as much of an audience of fairy tales as children – which might explain some of the not so savory early fairy tales. Tidbits gives you some merry and impish facts on some of our favorite Happily Ever Afters. • The name fairy tale was probably first given to these fantastical folklores by Madam d’Aulnoy, a writer known for her fairy tales, in 1697. • Conte de fées literally means fairy tale and is the name Madame d’Aulnoy gave her stories. • Folklore and fairy tales can be found in cultures and countries all over the world. They are hard to exactly trace because most fairy tales predate their written versions and were often been passed down orally long before being compiled – such as the case with the Brothers Grimm. • One of the oldest written fairy tales is thought to be “The Tale of Two Brothers” from Egypt in 1185 B.C.. It is preserved on the Papyrus D’Orbiney, which is currently housed in the British Museum. • Many fairy tales were later rewritten to be more suitable for children. The Grimm Brothers’ “The Juniper Tree” is one that is commonly edited down as the original involves cannibalism. • Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born in 1785 and 1786, respectively, in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1812 they published eighty-six German fairy tales titled Kinder-und Hausmarchen. There are approximately 200 of the Grimms’ fairy tales in all, including the familiars like “Hansel and Gretel,” “Rapunzel” and “Snow White.” • The Grimm version of “Snow White” is the version Disney chose for the basis of the 1937 film. • There are a few key differences between the Grimm and Disney versions. In the original tale, the evil queen tries to kill Snow White three times. First, as a peddler, she gives Snow White stay-laces and then laces her up so tight that she faints. She then tries to kill her as a different peddler who offers a poisoned hair comb. The third attempt is still the poison apple.

Wants by Lynn Parker

Being a Credit Counselor means that I talk to people all the time about discerning between wants and needs. Needs will make themselves known. We do not have to look through a catalog or store window to find a need. Those are wants. Most of us have our basic needs met, and we have an awful lot of our wants. Surprisingly, that can lead to discontent. At our core we are problem solvers. So if we don’t see a problem to solve, we tend to do nothing. We have trained ourselves to respond. We now have to train ourselves to be proactive. Many people become stagnant because they are no longer facing daily crisis’s. If you take a mental inventory and decide that there is really nothing that you want to do, or anywhere you want to go, ask yourself what you want that is not tangent. Do you want world peace, a cure for cancer, shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry, education for those in need, companionship for the lonely, safety for those in harm’s way? You may not have the answer for these causes but you can be a part of the solution. Making a budget will hi light the problem areas in your finances and taking a look at your daily calendar will show you how you are wasting your time. We all have the same twenty four hours a day, why do some people accomplish so much more with their time than others? Because procrastination is as dangerous as a no limit credit card. There are a lot of needs right now due to not only the recession but to natural disasters such as storms and floods. Donating your time and needed items will help the recipients but it will also help you realize that you are needed and that you can do something that makes a difference. Most of us have come to realize how fast time passes and how valuable it is. When we were looking for a career, we were told to do something that we would do whether we were paid for it or not, that might not have been possible a few years ago, but what is stopping you now? You do have a skill or talent, you can make a difference and you are needed. If you need help with creditors or creating a realistic budget and setting attainable goals, Call Lynn at Credit Counseling Advocates, for a free counseling evaluation. 3103 Alma Hwy. Van Buren, AR 479-410-1700 or 888-745-4481.

Q. A.

In the Garden with Janet B. Carson

I live in Searcy and I have a variety of grasses such as Bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine in my yard. I also have wild violets that I have been unable to kill. Can you tell me what to use to kill them and the time of the year to use it. Manor(metsulfuron) is an effective violet control herbicide in bermudagrass, centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass and zoysia-grass, but can be hard to find and calibrate for small lawns. Lawn care companies can be used to apply this product. Triclopyr in Weed B Gone chickweed, clover and oxalis killer is also a good product, but only can be used on Bermuda and zoysia grass, and timing is important. I would use caution right now, since the lawn is just greening up. It is much safer on cool season grasses or used in the fall or winter months when the violets get active. 2,4-D + 2,4-DP products will provide partial control. Use caution when spraying this product on St. Augustine--make sure whatever formulation you buy is labeled for your lawn grasses. We need a plant “screen” to obstruct an ugly building. We planted several Leyland cypress trees last summer to achieve this. Do they require any special attention? Are they prone to any disease? I’ve noticed some Leyland cypress used in a landscape and several of the branches are dead and in some cases, 1/2 the tree is dead. Do you have a favorite plant to use as a living screen? Leyland cypress plants can be hit and miss in Arkansas. I have seen some wonderful plants, yet I have seen even more that begin getting the brown branches scattered throughout with branch canker disease. Make sure they are planted in a well drained site and have ample room around them for air flow. Some better choices in my opinion are: Nelly R. Stevens holly, Lusterleaf holly, one of the smaller leafed magnolias--Little Gem or Brackens Brown Beauty, improved cherry laurels, and cryptomerias. Green giant arborvitae is another fast growing large evergreen.

Romania, and Transylvania in particular, often brings forth images of vampires, gypsies and other mystical, old world beings. This week Tidbits gives you the facts behind the myth as we take you to Romania. • The capital of Romania is Bucharest, which is also the largest city in Romania. • A native of Bucharest is a Bucharester. • A large portion of Romania’s border with Serbia is formed by the Danube river, the longest river in Europe. • In the Middle Ages, Romania was divided into three principalities: Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania. • Romania is bordered by Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria and Serbia. • Romania is slightly smaller than Oregon. • As of 2008, Romania had an estimated population of over 22 million. • Romanian Henri Marie Coanda invented the world’s first jet powered aircraft. • Transylvania comes from the Latin words trans and silva which mean across/beyond the black forest. • Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) was set in Transylvania, Romania, and popularized the association of that area with vampires. • Dracula was originally named Count Wampyr, but Stoker was inspired and changed the named to Dracula, which literally means son of Dracul. • The wooden churches of Maramures are a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site. They are located throughout Romania and are anywhere from 300-400 years old. • Bran Castle, often referred to as Dracula’s Castle, is a national monument and landmark of Romania. • Bran Castle is owned by Archduke Dominic of Austria, known as Dominic von Habsburg, an architect of New York, son of Princess Ileana of Romania. ROMANIA (cont. from page 6): • The first wooden castle on the site was built in 1212. The current citadel of Bran Castle was added on in 1377. The castle was made a museum in 1957. • Vlad III, also known as Vlad Tepes, was really called Dracula, as Dracul was a name given to his father, Vlad II. • Vlad III never “lived” in Bran Castle, rather he was imprisoned there for two months in the summer of 1462 by the King of Hungary. • Vlad was known in Turkish as Kazi kli Voyvoda or Impaler Prince for his cruel forms of torture. • The Transylvania International Film Festival is held in Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania, Romania. It was establish in 2001 and labels itself the only international film festival in Romania. • The city of Oradea is particularly noted for its Art Nouveau architecture. • 2004’s Van Helsing, based off Stoker’s character Abraham Van Helsing, was set in Transylvania. However, Van Helsing’s name was changed to Gabriel instead of Abraham, as it seemed more exciting for an action film. • The oldest known human remains in Europe were found in Pestera cu Oase (translated from Romanian as Cave with Bones) in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania. The remains, from three different individuals, were discovered in 2002 and have been dated by archaeologists as anywhere from 34,000 to 36,000 years old.
