Students show they're made of the write stuff f Having fun at the WorkAid ball

Rachel Smither, manager of WorkAid, the trust's supported employment service, said: "THis red carpet event was aimed at raising awareness of the skills of people with learning disabilities and autism and what they can bring to the workplace." Some of the skills were evident at the ball, held at a Crawley hotel, with the 'official' photographer, Andrew Pickthall, DJ Jack Bruce and comedian Richard Maffahey. THe event featured 'exemplar' employers, who work with WorkAid,

STUDENT novelists at Felpham Community College have seen their stories chosen in a national competition. THe 28 writers have been successful in the latest Young Writers event. THe competition attracted 18,000 entries and those from the students are being published in the Welcome to Wonderland - Sussex edition 2017. THis will be sent to the British Library and other libraries across the UK. It will be available for students to buy. THe students were required to write a short story of no more than 100 words based on a Welcome to Wonderland theme. Year 8 students Willow-Rose Hite and Lucie-Rose Robinson were among

those whose stories were accepted. Willow-Rose said: "It was fun entering the competition because as it was an exciting theme to write about." Lucie-Rose said: "To have our stories in a book is exciting. We are definitely going to buy a copy so we can keep it forever." A teacher of English at the college, Stephen Castle, said: "THis competition is now a regular event for Felpham students. "We are always proud of the effort students put into their entries and they produce some really exciting and interesting stories. "For them to see themselves in print is inspirational and should, hopefully, keep

showcasing how they have been inspired to become ambassadors for the trust to promote its work to other businesses and organisations. Awards were given during the evening to: SOLD, Shoreham, for volunteer support; Crawley Rugby Football Club, for its community support; International Logistics Group, equality and diversity; and Greenaway Residential, innovation. A DVD for employers was also launched to show the benefits to employers of recruiting individuals with learning disabilities and autism. Various international, national and local employers discussed their positive experiences working with WorkAid.
