PINEAPPLE EXPRESS Thursday, 9.30pm • GO
Even if stoner comedies (Cheech and Chon g et al) aren’t your bag, this action-packed laugh fest should keep you entertained. The stor y revolves around a lazy court process ser ver (Seth Rogan) and his ev en lazier marijuana dealer ( James F ranco) and ho w they wind up on the run from hitmen and a corrupt police officer after he w itnesses his dealer ’s boss murder a competitor while trying to serve papers on him. Everyone won’t love it, but it’s very funny.
L ove them or ha te them, there ’s no denying that Australia has been all up in ABBA’s business since the g et- go so i t’s probably a f ree kick tha t this 40th anniversary collection will sell like hotcakes. Also, i t’s w orth poin ting out tha t while the one-time Eurovision winners are often written off as thro waway pop, when y ou put son gs lik e ‘Danc ing Queen ’, ‘ Super Trouper’ and ‘ Gimme Gimme Gimme ’ against some of toda y’s thro waway pop , Benny, Bjorn Agnetha and Frida are freaking geniuses. The arrangements are glorious, the harmonies di vine. This bumper repackaging of the original ‘ ABBA G old’ compilation features the original comp , a second disc of even more ABBA hits and a third disc of b-sides and rarities.
The first big-budget flick from indie director Ken Scott (‘Starbuck’, ‘Sticky Fingers’) tells the rather implausible story of affable underachiever David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn), who finds out he’s fathered 533 children through anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years ago. Now he must decide whether or not to come forward when 142 of them file a lawsuit to reveal his identity. In the midst of all this, Wozniak’s girlfriend (Cobie Smulders) discovers she is pregnant and is unsure if the devil-may-care father of 100 or so can settle down and commit to life as a family man. There is a surprising depth here, with Vaughn forced to confront questions of maturity.
D.R.I Friday, May 2 • HI Fi, Sydney For the past 30 y ears, D.R.I. have been a t the top of the aggressi ve, hardcore-punk thrash tree along with the lik es of Suic idal Tendencies. Throughout this time, they ’ve been one of the few genuine underground bands to remain tr ue to their pure punk roots. Still ac tively touring and recording, the only thing that may have changed is that they’re a little older now, but time hasn’t gotten the best of the Dirty R otten Imbeciles. They’re still thrashing just as hard and just as loud as ever, continuing to overload our senses with the sound that is and will always remain, uniquely D.R.I. From their incendiar y debut – 198 3’s ‘Dirty R otten’ to their last studio album ‘F ull Speed Ahead’, these guys ha ve been f lying the thrash f lag and as y ou will see when they touch do wn next month, they are certainly not slowing down any time soon.

here’s little denying that it’s been a pretty massive couple of years for dance crew sensations Justice Crew. With three singles – ‘Boom Boom’, ‘Best Night’ and ‘Everybody’ all going at least double platinum (‘Boom Boom’ went six times platinum) and a freshly inked deal with rapper Pitbull’s label Mr 305 Inc., there’s certainly a lot of hype around these guys at the moment. It would make sense then that their upcoming tour should be called #Hype. Kicking off in Queensland earlier this month, Lukas Bellesini, also known as Wildrok, told TE that the tour was going great guns. “It’s been really awesome. We’ve played the Gold Coast and Nambour already and the fans have just been brilliant – we’ve been signing after the shows for what seems like hours, he said. Bellesini said the past little while had been chock-a-block full of “pinch yourself moments like this, namely the huge success of Justice Crew’s last three singles. “You know, it’s just great to have our
same time ‘Boom Boom’ was in the charts. It turned out he was into the song and we eventually met up with him and were invited to play his last show in Sydney and the next thing we knew we were signed to his label, he said. “The guy has such a great business mind as well as being a really cool guy – he’s completely down to earth. The relationship has already started to bear fruit with the crew spending three weeks in the States on a promo tour last year as well as opening for Pitbull and Kei$ha on their North American tour. But for now, it’s all about the tour and Bellesini said that having five other people to rely on, on the road makes the prospect that much more exciting. “If I was solo, I think it would be much harder just to stay motivated and stuff like that, but because we’re such a tight-knit crew we’re always there for each other and always there to help push each other creatively. TE is giving you the chance to win a double pass to see Justice Crew. To enter, email your name and contact details to email@example.com, with “Justice Crew in the subject line, by no later than 5pm on Tuesday, April 22. Winners will be notified by phone.

“After hearing my first record [‘Sudden Change in W eather’, 2008 ] Garth ran g me and tol d me tha t he lo ved wha t I was doin g – he is really passiona te about A ustralian coun try music and I guess he just sa w something about this Aussie country chick who is a little rough around the edges,” she said. “He really g ets me as an artist, which made w orking w ith him tha t much easier.” Good ma te Shannon Noll ev en threw his hat into the ring for ‘Renegade’, writing the track ‘B eyond These City Lights’ as well as performing it with Denham on the album. “Having Shannon in volved was just amazing,” she said. “I had toured w ith The Noll Brothers and had met Shannon a few times and we met up a t a festi val and he said tha t he had a son g tha t he though t I migh t really lik e and, for me, there coul dn’t have been a more perfec t duet – y ou can’t get much more A ussie than Shannon Noll.”
