Rainy day? Time for a closet clean-out

O

ne way to spend a rainy day is to binge-watch your favourite show. This can be fun, but if you are looking for something a little more productive, why not tidy up your closet? Here are some easy tips: 1. Depending on how big your closet is, plan on spending from four to six hours sorting and organizing it. 2. Set up an area in your room for different piles for items you will sort, donate, keep or store. 3. Pull out your clothes, accessories and shoes from your closet and drawers and place in one pile. 4. Spending about 20 seconds per item, set aside the clothes, accessories and shoes you wear most. Some of these may end up in the keep area and some in the store area, depending on the season and your storage space. You may need to repeat this. As you repeat the process, ask if you have worn the item in the last few weeks or even months. If you haven’t and it isn’t sentimental, it should go in the donate pile. 5. You may have clothes, shoes or accessories that are meaningful to you, but you haven’t worn in a while. If

you have the space, place these items in the store pile. If you don’t, choose whether to keep or donate. 6. You may need to try on some of your clothes to make sure they still fit. If something hasn’t fit in a while, it’s probably time to part with the item. 7. You should now be left with a donate pile. Keep in mind that your objective is to tidy up your closet, so this pile should be a fair size. Donating can be free and convenient. Charities such as Diabetes Canada will pick up your clothing for free. 8. Now place your keep pile back in your closet or drawers. You may want to take the opportunity to do some sorting before you do. There are different ways to organize. One way is separating by type – shirts, pants, dresses or suits, for example. Other ways include by season or colour. Anything returning to drawers should be placed so that they can be easily seen. 9. Shoes and accessories should also be placed for easy access and viewing. Sort by how often you wear them with the most worn easiest to see and grab. 10. Your stored clothes can be placed in a box,

preferably plastic, in your closet, or in another area. Don’t forget to reassess these stored items as the

Five steps to a healthier green lawn

fter a long winter, it’s finally time to enjoy the outdoors again. For a healthy yard all season, it’s important to do a little “spring cleaning” now for a lush, green lawn. If the work seems overwhelming, projects can be accomplished over several weekends. Here are six simple projects to help achieve a beautiful lawn this season. 1. RAKE Lawn and garden experts recommend giving the yard a good raking after green starts to show. Raking helps separate matted patches of grass caused by snow mold (if snow is typical for the local climate) and will remove debris and dead grass blades to help prevent excess thatch

from developing. Raking the whole lawn presents opportunities to spot problem areas and remove debris such as pet waste and fallen branches. 2. GIVE THE LAWN A “CHECKUP” Look for signs of compacted soil, such as moss growth, water pooling in low areas or bare spots in the lawn. Compaction can be caused over time by activities in the lawn like foot traffic from children or pets playing in the yard. If the soil appears compacted or the grass is growing poorly, it’s a good idea to aerate the lawn in the spring or plan to aerate in the fall. 3. FEED A spring feeding sets the

stage for a healthier, greener lawn all season. Spring is a great time to prevent crabgrass and kill broadleaf weeds like dandelion. If you’re not planning spring seeding projects, tackle three things at once with Scotts Turf Builder Triple Action. It not only feeds to strengthen the lawn, but also kills dandelion, clover and other weeds while preventing crabgrass for four months. 4. SEED Come springtime, the lawn may have bare patches or thin areas that need fixing. The best time to spread grass seed depends on the grass type. Cool-season grasses should be seeded early or mid-spring.

Warm-season grasses found predominately in the South should be seeded in late spring or early summer. (If a crabgrass preventer or weed control product was recently applied or is going to be applied to the lawn, check the product label for seeding restrictions.) Bare spots, like those caused by weed dieback, snow mold or dog spots should be fixed using a patching product like Scotts EZ Seed Patch & Repair Sun and Shade which combines grass seed, fertilizer and a water absorbent mulch into an easy-to-apply product. If the lawn is thin overall, use an overseeding product like Scotts Turf Builder Thick’R Lawn Sun & Shade which

combines grass seed, fertilizer and a soil improver to help turn weak, thin grass into a thick, green lawn. Newly seeded areas should be watered daily until grass reaches mowing height (two to three inches). 5. WATER CAREFULLY Rains are usually plentiful in the spring, but if the lawn has taken on a grayish cast, or footprints don’t disappear quickly because grass blades don’t spring back, it may be time to water. Watering before 10 a.m. allows the water to soak into the soil and be absorbed by grass roots. Watering midday causes water to evaporate quickly, and watering in the evening leaves moisture sitting on the grass, which promotes fungus and other diseases. Water long enough for moisture to reach six to eight inches into the soil where the grass roots grow. For new grass or newly seeded areas, water daily using an oscillating sprinkler, as pulsating sprinklers wash away seeds before grass can grow. 6. MOW HIGH Before the first mow of the season, sharpen the mower blade to avoid damaging grass. Don’t cut grass too short, as it increases risks for weed infestation and diseases. Taller grass is also more drought resistant, because roots grow deeper and absorb moisture. Don’t mow grass while wet; this can clog the mower and leave clumps of grass behind. To avoid compacting the soil, change up the mowing direction and patterns each time. A little lawn maintenance in spring will make it easier to enjoy a beautiful green yard all season. This safety essential has been saving lives for 100 years

ary Govanus didn’t put much thought into what he was wearing 45 years ago while working in-flight services at night at Chicago O’Hare, but by the end of that day his life would be forever changed because he reached for a hard hat at the start of his shift. On the night of his accident, he and his team were cleaning out an Eastern 747 airplane that had electrical problems and flaps stuck in the extended position. This meant moving things in and out of the plane using an inconvenient, steep staircase. “Because of the height of the door and the curvature of the air frame, the ramp that usually nestled up against the side of the plane at door level was now about two feet lower than the door and there was a three-foot gap between the plane and the truck,” said Govanus. “It presented an obstacle that required thought and planning to get into and out of the plane.” Freezing cold and past quitting time, Govanus was anxious to get home to see his fiancée, who had recently arrived in town. “I was thinking about going home and not getting into the airplane,” he said. “As I took that final step to get into the aircraft, I

missed. I may not remember everything from that night, but the sight of watching the open door go by as I started my plunge is forever ingrained. I knew that I was about to find out if it was my time to die.” He fell about 30 feet to the cement tarmac. Thanks to the position he landed in, a heavy winter coat that provided cushion and his Bullard hard hat, he survived. “I was wearing a hard hat and that heavy jacket. The hard hat kept me alive. The jacket prevented further injury to my shoulders and arms. I came away with two compressed vertebrae and two broken wrists. I was blessed,” Govanus said. HARD HAT HISTORY Hard hats save lives, and what you may not know is that the hard hat turns 100 this year. The hard hat comes from Kentucky-based, family-owned Bullard, founded in 1898 in San Francisco to supply carbide lamps and mining equipment to gold and copper miners. The “Hard Boiled” hat, introduced in 1919, was the first of many innovative designs over the past century in head protection and safety equipment. During the 1930s, while the Golden Gate Bridge was being constructed in San Francisco, bridge engineer

Joseph B. Strauss asked the company to adapt its hats to protect bridge workers. This was the first-ever designated “hard hat area.” The company continued to innovate the hard hat. In 1938, they designed and manufactured the first aluminum hard hat, considered durable and reasonably lightweight for the time. The company’s distinctive three-rib, heat-resistant fiber-

glass hard hat was developed in the 1940s. In the 1950s and ‘60s, thermoplastics replaced fiberglass. In 1982, the standard hard hat changed again with the incorporation of a non-slip ratchet suspension with a knob in the back for simple sizing. The modern hard hat is produced from polyethylene plastic, making it lightweight, durable, easy to mold and non-conductive to

electricity. Features such as easy-lock snaps, an upgraded suspension system and enhanced air flow, make it more comfortable and convenient than ever. Bullard is also a supporter of the Turtle Club, a group that honours those whose life was saved as a result of wearing a hard hat.
