This winter, head south. No, we aren’t talking about crossing any borders here, instead consider planning a trip to an area of the province brimming with diversity. From internationally themed cuisine and top-notch festivals and musical acts, to fun-filled snowy hotspots, the southern region of the province is filled with tons of variety to pass the fall and winter days away.

refuge in the city

A snowy escape from the city can be found in Wakamow Valley, mere minutes from downtown Moose Jaw. Embrace the season with a skate on the oval rink, a hike, snowshoeing (free rentals) or cross-country skiing on groomed trails. Winter events include wagon rides on New Year’s Eve (from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Winterfest, February 21 – a free family event featuring winter activities and games.

galleries galore

With exhibitions changing every six to eight weeks, multiple visits to the Estevan Art Gallery & Museum are encouraged. Beyond showcasing artwork by local, provincial and national artists, the gallery hosts After Dark, a live music series running until June. Plan to attend the Homemade for the Holidays event, December 5 from 1 to 4 p.m., where local artists, artisans and crafters showcase their wares.

ranch charm and history

Take advantage of four-season riding with a visit to Historic Reesor Ranch. Tuck into the onsite B&B, cabins or log barn. Cabin rooms are dedicated to local ranchers and their history, so expect to also learn a little something during your visit. Dine at the Ranch House Grill after a day of playing in the snow, then head to the games room or relax by the fireplace for a cozy evening in the Cypress Hills countryside.

get your ski on!

Take the whole family out for a snow day. Mission Ridge Winter Park, in the beautiful Qu’Appelle Valley, has an all-ages, learn-to-ski program and boasts 750 skis and 250 snowboards for rent. Opening November 28, the resort makes all their own snow, so strap on your skis or snowboards and shred some fresh powder this season. After a full day on the slopes, warm up at Bubba’s, where the valley’s best pizza awaits.
