REVISED MAP OFFERS MORE POTENTIAL FOR WOODLAND CREATION

12/12(3)

Forestry Commission Wales is urging landowners to reconsider applying for the Glastir woodland creation grant scheme if their land was not eligible when the scheme was first launched. Thanks to changes to the map that is used to assess applications to the grant scheme, planting trees may now be possible in some areas where it was previously not permitted. The revisions to the map mean that some land

moves from the “red” area, where no planting is permitted, to “amber”, where consultation about site specific issues is required to decide if woodland creation may go ahead. The consultation process includes contacting relevant organisations and a site visit. Bill MacDonald, Forestry and Environment Policy and Programme Manager, Forestry Commission Wales said, “When the Glastir woodland creation grant scheme was launched, many landowners were not eligible to apply as their land was designated as being in the red area. “However, we have found that using the mapbased information alone to assess applications is not sufficient and so, having consulted with stakeholders, we decided to revise the map. “These changes reflect our experience that, with careful consideration and consultation, woodland creation may be appropriate in some areas where planting was previously not permitted,” The woodland creation scheme is part of the Woodlands Element within Glastir which is available to all landowners in Wales. Applicants receive specialist advice from a woodland consultant free of charge who will check the woodland creation opportunities map to see if the land is eligible for planting, explain the scheme rules and develop a planting plan and the grant application. Glastir Woodland Creation is administered by Forestry Commission Wales on behalf of the Welsh Government and enquires should be directed to bww.ts@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or 0300 068 0300. The map can be viewed on the Forestry Commission Wales website (click on the Glastir grant link on the home page).

A member of staff from Powys County Council has represented one of Britain’s most iconic trails at a world conference held in South Korea. Offa’s Dyke Path National Trail Officer Rob Dingle was representing both the Offa’s Dyke path and the National Trails of England and Wales at the 2012 World Trail Conference held on Jeju Island, South Korea, last month (29 – 31 October). The island has stunning 258km coastline, which is now home to 240km of trails. The three-day conference was hosted and organised by the Jeju Olle Foundation, which was originally inspired by the Jeju Olle Trails on the island, brought together 23 trail organisations from 17 countries as well as 22 trail and related organisations from South Korea. The first ever conference was held in 2010. The conference gives a chance for trails managers and organisations to come together and share up-to-date information and experiences and of the world's trails. It also provides networking and co-operation opportunities for better development and management of trails. As part of the conference, Rob gave a presentation on the Offa’s Dyke trail and participated in two workshops on the themes ‘Communication with local community’ and ‘Communication with trail users’. The other key part of the conference was the establishment of a World Trail Network, which DON’T FORGET

will help share the current issues and common values of trails in the world and establish the trail industry towards sustainable development. The final day saw delegates joined 2,000 other walks on the first day of the Jeju Olle Walking Festival. “This was an amazing sight to see so many walkers gathered in one place and all head along the coast,” said Rob. “The conference was a great opportunity to meet and talk with trails managers from all around the world and learn both about their trails and the issues they face in managing their routes. “It was nice to hear from delegates that the National Trail model we have here in England and Wales is so highly regarded and respected around the world. We now have the chance to share our knowledge through the World Trail Network.” 12/12(1)

‘YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF WHAT’S HAPPENING HERE‘ Huw Lewis AM Housing Regeneration & Heritage Minister’s verdict on Talgarth

Following the reinstatement of Talgarth Mill last year and the opening of the popular Baker’s Table Café and Bakery business, it has been evident that other shops, businesses and individuals in the Town have taken up the challenge, with a couple of new businesses opening up – and a greater sense of pride in the appearance of buildings in the town centre. Bell Street in Talgarth has focused minds for years – and still shows some of the signs of the trunk road gridlock that blighted the Post Office Corner before the opening of the new A479 Talgarth Relief Road some five years ago. However, there is now a serious regeneration initiative underway and at last real progress is being made. It was in this context that Huw Lewis AM, Welsh Minister for Housing Regeneration and Heritage paid a visit to Talgarth recently, to see examples of redundant properties that have been converted into family dwellings, as well as other schemes that are under construction and at the planning phase. The Minister, accompanied by Mid and West Wales AM Cllr William Powell and senior representatives from Powys County Council, was

months before both properties are also able to provide much needed town centre housing – together with shop space available for let at ground floor level, for which there is now a keen demand. The Minister was also given an update by Julian Preece and Neil Pritchard of Powys County Council on progress to reinstate No 1, Bell Street – also known as the Old Post Office. While this is still at the planning stage, it is the firm intention to move to implementation in the New Year, again under the overall supervision of Powys County Council. William Powell AM, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth , commented: ‘The Old Post Office Scheme and also potentially the reinstatement of Liverpool House, the redundant residential space above the Coop on Talgarth Square, are two key projects where we aim to see progress at last in the New Year.’ The Minister also took time out for a whistle stop tour of Talgarth Mill, hosted by Chris Blake, Chair of the Felin Talgarth Mill Directors. Commenting on his visit, Huw Lewis said: ‘You should all be proud of what’s happening here in terms of regeneration – and I’m glad I made the visit. I look forward to returning to Talgarth in the future, to see how these ambitious projects take shape.’

Cllr William Powell, AM; Julian Preece, Powys County Council; Huw Lewis AM, Minister of Housing, Regeneration and Heritage and Cllr Rosemarie Harris, PCC Cabinet Member for Housing.

WHERE DO FAGGOTS AND SPINNING WHEELS MAKE GOOD PARTNERS? Cheese and jam usually go together in Llanwrtyd Wells in the post-race sandwiches for Man versus Horse, but last weekend they featured (separately) in the Llanwrtyd Wells Autumn Farmers Market, an extravaganza of local foods and crafts. Don’t miss the Spring Market in March. We were tempted by Calon Wen milk, cheese and butter, by Cothi Valley Goats cheese, quiches and pastries, by Glanbrydan pies and Christmas puds, traditional Welsh faggots from Howey and curry in a bag, Top Tier’s cup cakes, and fresh chillies for the brave. There were plants for your garden and decorations for your house, Blythe Barn double yoke eggs and pashminas from India, home made preserves and greeting cards, and crafts from local knitters, spinners, jewellery makers, artists and basket weavers. Bromsgrove Hall had ample free parking and is an easy walk from Llanwrtyd’s railway station and bus stops. After a stroll around the stalls, you could relax with tea and scones or a bowl of home made leek and potato soup at the market café. It is a community venture to provide an outlet for local producers and an enjoyable day out for all who come. Stalls are £2 to cover the cost of hall hire and advertising. UNDERSTANDING ANTIBIOTICS

The Holly Bears the Crown – Imagine a Christmas before the inflatable plastic Santa was invented; before the flashing, LED-illuminated Rudolph and the fibre-optic Christmas tree. Imagine a time of fable, folklore and time-honoured custom, when stories were told by candlelight and, by the glow of the blazing Yuletide brand, those gathered in hearthside’s ease could sing a good old tune in four-part harmony, fine and full. This Christmas The Village Quire and actor Phil Smith bring you songs and stories of mumming and wassailing, of misrule and mirth; rousing West Gallery anthems and intimate festive miniatures to melt your heart – an older Christmas, more stark, more true, glimpsed in the glimmering light of candle flames. CANDLELIT CHRISTMAS CONCERT WITH THE VILLAGE QUIRE

November 18 was European antibiotic awareness day. There is often confusion about when we should or should not take antibiotics. Antibiotics play an important role in treating bacterial infections that could harm or be life-threatening but we need to sustain their effectiveness not just for ill people now but for ill people in the future. Antibiotics are not used for treating viral infections such as colds as they do not have an effect on these illnesses. If you are given a course of antibiotics it is important that you follow the instructions given and always complete the course, even if you start to feel better before you’ve used them all. There could still be a small amount of infection left and if you do not complete the course these bacteria could become resistant to the treatment meaning that it won’t work in the future. Around the world there are now an increasing number of bacterial infections that are resistant to antibiotics, and this is mainly due to people not completing the course of drugs prescribed to them. To find out more about antibiotics, talk to your GP or your pharmacist who will have a range of leaflets to explain more.
