The first phase of removal has taken place. Westbrook disagreed with the assessment of the tree’s condition and removal. “I came about three months ago and begged you not to cut those trees down. Only three of those trees removed were dying. I went out and took pictures of two of them, Westbrook said as the photos were passed among the Board. “You can see the trunks. They were solid as a rock. One had 142 rings. Westbrook said the trees needed to be trimmed properly, fertilized and aerated. He asked the board to get a second opinion on the condition of the trees before removing any additional trees. “A laser can be used to examine the tree to see if it is really dying, or if it is just the limbs that need to be properly cut, said Westbrook. “Please get a second opinion on the other three quadrants.

Commissioners questioned on Courthouse tree removal Pender County Commissioners heard an impassioned plea Monday to stop the tree removal on the Burgaw Courthouse Square until the remaining trees can be examined. Burgaw businessman Johnny Westbrook asked the Board to halt the removal program. “I’m asking you to get a second opinion on the trees, that’s all, Westbrook told Commissioners. After a survey of the trees on the Square, the Board decided to go with recommendation of an arborist and remove many of the oak trees on the Square. The arborist determined that most of the trees were diseased and dying and needed to be removed for safety reasons. Commissioners approved a plan to remove the trees in four phases, dividing the Square into quadrants.
