Local residents will be able to celebrate Fourth of July week by going to see one of two special movie screenings of I Know What You Did Last Summer, which will be shown July 7 from 9 p.m. and again at 11 p.m. at Harrell’s Department Store in Burgaw. During the filming of the 90s horror movie hit, the store was also known as Shiver’s Department Store. The movie was filmed at Harrell’s in Burgaw and also in Southport.

The screening event is part of a film series called On Set Cinema where movies are brought to life by showing them to viewers at their actual filming locations.

Kenny Caperton came up with the idea that developed into On Set Cinema.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s, he spent Friday nights wandering the aisles of local video stores with friends or at home eating junk food while watching late night cable television. Fascinated by movies, Caperton said that he has assimilated his passion for cinema into real life.

Movie screening planned for July 7 in Burgaw

Pender County Commissioners approved a resolution June 18 requesting assistance from the state to identify roads in the unincorporated area of Pender County adjacent to Surf City as part of a strategic Road network.

The resolution stems from complaints from residents along Cedar Avenue in Surf City which as been used as a cut through to avoid the often congested N.C. 210/50 intersection.

Drivers have often sought out alternative routs to avoid or reduce travel time to Topsail Island. Several private Roads that are maintained through homeowner’s associations have not been able to keep up maintenance due to the high volume of traffic.

Many of these roads are still unpaved.

During the Memorial Day weekend, some residents set up a toll booth on Cedar Avenue and charged drivers a toll to use the road. “They have an issue with seasonal traffic going from N.C. 210 to the beach,� said Pender County Planning Director Kyle Breuer. “The swing bridge backs up traffic along N.C. 50, which is the main corridor. Just like anyone else, we try to find the quickest route. Thanks to GPS, the Cedar Avenue route, which was known only to locals, the traffic volume on this route has increased.�

The roads in question are private roads, which were built before Pender County required subdivision streets to be built to state road specifications. “With the construction of the new bridge, that will ease some of the congestion, and the DOT has some long-term plans to bring solutions to the area, but it is not helping the current situation in the area,�

Breuer said.

Commissioner David Williams pointed out Cedar Avenue is an unimproved road that was built before there was much planning and zoning in Pender County. “Some citizens are spending money and are between a rock and a hard place. This is about the only thing to do is get some attention from the top. There is nothing legally we can do,� Williams said. “I don’t think Surf City will be annexing that property any time soon. That would be a huge cost to them.�

As an alternative route to access Topsail Island, Pender County officials feel a strategic collector street can reduce a portion of the traffic congestion along existing routes into the area. The board’s resolution asked Pender County’s representatives and the NCDOT to seek a solution to the long-term issue to benefit the region.

Notes from the Field Part II Ken Watkins, inspired collector

Bill Messer A chance meeting led to the discovery of an extraordinary collection of artifacts: a building from the former Camp Davis, at least a dozen semi-trailers, assorted sheds and a couple of yards full of eye-catchers and head scratchers.

Ken Watkins showed me around the warehouse, and told me about his collections.

There was something, a little voice in the back of my head, telling me, warning me, that I was heading down this path, and if I didn’t get out there and do something serious out there in the garage and spare bedroom, Ken would have a likely rival.

My thoughts turned back to setting out on my own after returning from the Navy in the late ‘60s. I can pretty much rattle off a list of my belongings in my first apartment, then the upgrade to a single-wide mobile home – furnished. Over the years I added more stuff, my parents and grandparents offloaded some of their treasures, friends thought I needed this and that. Still, subsequent moves required only a few pickup truck trips back and forth. The moves to Raleigh, Wilmington and finally Hampstead were left to commercial movers.

I fear death less than the thought of having to pack up and move again.

Moving from upstairs to the lower level, the first thing I saw was a wooden box with stenciled info on the side: 2CTG 105 MM HE, a case for two cartridges for the Model 2 105 mm howitzer, highexplosive.

“They’re filled with antique horse-shoes,” Ken explained, “Junk, and I’m gettin’ rid of stuff. It’s time to move it!”

I laughed, seeing no evidence of recently bared shelves ot shadow outlines on the dusty floor.

“My daughter lives next door, and she’s always saying, “You promised me you’d get rid of all this stuff ”. She’s scared to death of having to deal with all this (if inherited).”

Row on row of shelves held books and magazines, once priceless and desirable collectibles, but now not so much. He gave me one example, “Wooden Boat magazine, you can’t give this stuff away, nobody wants it, you can get it all online.”

We passed by shelved laden with boxes of tools,

and more tools laid out or standing in the aisles.

“I was up at Lowe’s the other day, and saw this guy getting some doors from the reduced for quick sale tables, and I wanted to go up and say, “Listen, don’t buy any of that stuff, just come over to my house and we’ll load you up ‘cause I’ve got that, and that, and that, and get whole pickup loads of stuff,” but I didn’t, he was already in the check-out line.

We continued on toward the exit, “This was a one story building when I bought it.”

We emerged into the yard, surrounded by a wall of semi-trailers, a dozen or more in various groups.

Ken waved his arm over toward the corner of the lot, “See that one over there? Second from the end? I haven’t opened that one in twentyfive years.”

“What’s in ‘em?” I asked.

“Everything from old antique soft serve ice cream machines to the steps to the fort, in Daniel Day Lewis’ “The Last of the Mohicans” movie.

I used to work on the sets. A lot of these have cabinetry in ‘em, I sell to restaurants. I used to sell to restaurants a lot. At one point I thought I might want to put together a restaurant and have somebody else run it.”

Continuing, we approached the outside stairs leading to the upper floor, and Ken paused, “There’s so much great wood here.

Back to the demolition job in Durham. I said “I don’t want it but I can recommend a couple of people to you. It’s the flooring that’s worth a bunch here. They didn’t know anything about salvage.”

Ken held his hand out with thumb and forefinger apart, “The wood was about four inches thick, the flooring, not heart pine, but hard pine. And then I said, “But I do want those oak beams,” and I got four trailer loads of ‘em. They’re in the back, back there, and I’m down to less than one semi-trailer load of ‘em, six by eight, sixteen foot long.

“And look down this aisle here, see that? Smoked tempered safety glass. In 1981 I bought 770 sheets of that, for 70 cents a sheet when they were goin’ for wholesale cash out the door for $125 a sheet, lowest, to $220 highest. It was two tractor trailer loads plus a couple of U-Haul loads.”

We continued to the bottom of the stairs, Ken cautioned me to be careful, and I saw the condition of the stairsteps. “These look just like the ones over on the fire tower,” I said and he said, “I used to climb it all the time . . . shut the camera off for a minute.”

I laughed, and then, rejoining the allowable narrative,

The society of hatred I wish there was an easy solution to the problems at the Mexican border.

I also wish the politicians on both sides of the issue would shut up and let normal folks figure out a solution.

There is no doubt that people who cross the borders of the United States without a passport or visa are breaking the law -- Title 8 U.S. Code § 1325, titled “Improper entry by alien,” clearly defines that law. A few other federal laws dress 1325 up a little, and fill in some blanks.

I suggest you read it yourself, at the library or online.

There’s no doubt that separating parents from children is a bad thing, a terrible thing. However, parents and children are split apart every single day because the parent breaks one law or another. Endangering a child will get a child snatched from a parent in a hot minute, as well such an act should. Those kids often end up in short- or longterm foster care, which isn’t always the best situation, but is better than what they were facing.

Most of us cannot fathom the love and dedication of foster parents who answer the phone at 3 a.m. to take in a traumatized toddler or a tempermental teenager because a stranger failed as a parent. The resources these foster parents have to offer is usually strained to the very max, but every one I have met is a prime example of a servant of God. I am sure that most foster parents wish they could provide for their charges in the manner which the government cares for the children of illegal aliens. It’s not perfect, by any means, but the children being cared for in those converted Walmarts and other buildings receive immediate and quality medical care, counseling, healthy

Jefferson Weaver food, basic education classes geared to their level and culture, new clothing, and safe, climate-controlled shelter.

Before you condemn me, take note: I have not visited one of those shelters myself. Nor do I entirely trust government platitudes.

Instead, I have looked to the coverage by the media that is most critical of the children’s shelters and the current administration.

The old historian’s trick of using a critic’s reports to gain a balanced view seems to bear out the reports that the youth shelters are not, as some have specifically claimed, the equivalent of Nazi concentration camps.

I wish I could figure out a solution, but right now, our country is so caught up in a spirit of hatred that I am not sure anything anyone does is going to be the right thing.

Meanwhile, the illegals and their families bypassed eight different U.S. embassies in Mexico where they could have claimed political asylum, all so they could pay out big bucks to the monsters called coyotes who sneaked them across the border.

Hidden in all the smoke and fire of this whole mess are little stories that the large and small media sup-

ply, but folks don’t seem to notice. For instance, the ten children rescued from a Latin American child sex trafficking ring by Operation Underground Railroad a while back were being used to finance border crossings.

Blogger Chuck Goolsby details the child sex trafficking in the San Diego area.

National Public Radio, CBS, and CNN, among others, have run multiple stories about how children and teens are sold or rented to drug smugglers, who then claim the children are their own if they get caught – but have no idea how a six-yearold little kid came to be carrying $200,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine.

And whether or not actual radical ISIS terrorists are crossing the border is anyone’s guess – the proborder security crowd says yes, the open-borders crowd says no, Homeland Security says maybe, and the Border Patrol says certainly.

But illegal immigration is like race relations, gay marriage, gun control, abortion, tax cuts, and nigh onto anything else nowadays.

There is no longer room for civil debate and discourse, just a rush to see who can make the most insulting statement faster than the other side. To disagree with anyone, especially someone who screams the loudest, is now “hatred.”

It’s also our own fault.

We as voters (for either party) and Americans have nurtured a society of hatred by tolerating politicians and celebrities constantly whip themselves into a rabid froth over anything “the other side” does or says. They then browbeat the general public into accepting their often altered, out-of-context view, whether it’s for personal political gain or a few minutes

Living large It’s that time of year again.

Summer has arrived and, for 26 years in a row, this teacher has neglected to save enough money to finance warm weather adventures and the mortgage payment.

As the school year ends, so do my paychecks. Each August, I make a personal vow to squirrel away enough cash to skate through summer free of financial worry.

Unfortunately, I place reason to the wayside as excuses mount as to why I simply cannot spare an extra dime for another day. In August and September, school supplies and new clothes top the priority list. With fall nipping at my heels, I’m consumed with the need to stock up on pumpkin scented candles and cornucopias. Before I know it, Christmas arrives along with the most amazing sales of the year. After all, there’s no better time to stock up on wardrobe essentials. Thankfully, New Year’s instills a renewed interest in becoming a better me as I revisit the promises made on behalf of my savings account. I declare to every ear willing to listen that, by June, my summer savings cup will runneth over. Instead of supporting this ideal, however, I’m met with guffaws and eye rolls. I rely desperately on positive reinforcement and these displays simply wither my good intentions. Of course, tensions arrive on the homestead when I transfer funds from the marital pot of gold to cover the bills and our daily treks to The Fractured Prune and Island Crush. Pedicures are an absolute must as are the day trips to educational points of interest. Besides, Daniel should know my patterns by now, so I call foul on his inability to anticipate the financial needs of our family.

Why do I fall prey to these cruel series of events every year? Could it be a flaw in my character? A wave of maturity sweeps over me as I perform an honest self-assessment of the triggers which drive my decision-making.

Quickly, patterns begin to emerge.

First, shopping fills me with giddy anticipation and makes me happy. When I notice an item on sale, buying said item makes sense if it’s more than half off the original price. So, if more than one of the items is purchased, technically I’ve made a profit because I saved more than I spent. Some would consider this economic prowess.

This concept is known by savvy financial geniuses as supply and demand. I don’t just know it-I live it.

Getting smarter about getting older “Whoever thought I was going to live so long,” my 96 year old mother asked?

She isn’t alone. 10,000 of us turn 65 every day. In 1990, North Carolina’s median age – meaning one half are younger and one half older was 33.0. By 2016 that number had escalated to 38.7 years, making us the 20th oldest state in the nation. The Office of State Budget and Manage-

ment predicts that 1 in 5 will be 65 or older by 2030.

For too many, the idyllic dream of golden years of leisure isn’t their reality. The average net worth of today’s 65 year old is $170,000, much of which includes their home equity. Even coupled with Social Security this won’t afford a generous lifestyle for the 20-plus years most should live. Instead of getting the gold watch of retirement many still have to punch the time clock, at least part time, to make ends meet.

It might be too late to sock away funds for retirement and too cost prohibitive to purchase long-term healthcare insurance but there are steps we can take to live healthier and happier lives.

Eating healthier, getting more exercise and rest and engaging in less risky behaviors can serve seniors well.

One irony is the role reversal, where children seem to have forgotten who taught them to become functioning adults, constantly telling us they are worried for us, even when we adamantly state we are “fine.” But when we congregate with others our

age it doesn’t take long before the conversation switches to health issues, followed shortly after by the mantra, “Getting old ain’t for sissies.”

Getting old also doesn’t work well for those in denial.

It benefits everyone to have discussions in advance of needs. There are legitimate questions that need answers, like what will happen if one spouse dies or becomes incapacitated? Should you give up the emotional and financial security of that comfortable house and consider one of the growing numbers of retirement communities or staged assisted living facilities? If independent living is the right choice then perhaps downsizing might be advisable.

Those wishing to “age in place” in familiar surroundings should not wait until there is an accident to make their living environments safer and less cluttered.

Many find it cheaper to make necessary renovations than to move, but changes must address both present and future needs. AARP, occupational therapists and a number of books deal with how to

That same commentator, by the way, said that anyone that supports the president or strong borders is “like the Nazis.” Those who blew back at him have been attacked for being hotheads and bigots.

If you tell a good dog that he’s bad for long enough, he’s going to bite someone; it’s hardly fair to the dog to then punish him for the behavior you have taught him.

Yet that’s exactly what we do – when people finally give in and instinctively defend themselves, those on the other side promptly crow the I-told-you-so’s.

The institutional hatred of the president has gotten so strong that even when Trump succeeded in sitting down with the North Korean dictator to talk about denuclearization, he was criticized for sitting down with the North Korean dictator. Of course, a few weeks before, the same critics were screaming that he was taking us into a new war with North Korea. The same thing happened when he gave in and announced plans to reunite illegal immigrants and their children.

Yet for all the hoopla and hullabaloo, no one has really offered a solution to dealing with people who, in their desperation for better lives, break American law.

For the record – I don’t support anyone breaking any law. I don’t think people who disregard our laws to get here will be good citizens, therefore they should be treated humanely and sent home. I’m not happy that parents and children are being separated, but when people break the law, bad things happen to them.

Also for the record, I don’t hate anyone.

I wish I could solve the problems at the border, the same way I wish I could solve the opioid crisis, unemployment, rogue countries that want to see America in ashes, the smoldering match of racism, and the rather profitable hatred of law enforcement.

I’m not even sure I can offer a solution – but I do know we’ll never get anywhere as long as we nurture a society of hatred.

We’re Americans, people.

We may be getting older, but we can be smart about it and take precautions to make the years remaining as safe and worry free as possible.

Maybe then we can call them “golden years.”

This week has been a fintastic. Get it?

We have had some beautiful sunny days and the marine life has been abundant! I’m talking about multiple species swimming right beside us and our campers. Imagine strong sun rays on your skin, perfect water temperature, waves strong enough to body surf, but soft enough to be able to float around.

This week has been full of pretty perfect summer days like those. We could see and feel schools of fish swim by us and even swim into us from time to time! The mole crabs were so abundant that they were tickling campers feet as they washed up the swash zone.

One of our very favorite camp activities is to seine net.

(Seine pronounced like insane, but without the “in”.) A seine net is a fishing net which has weights on the bottom and buoys on the top. Our seine net is connected to a pole on each side for our campers to hold on to.

Seine nets are nothing new – they have been around since the stone age. (Seriously!) As the waves break and wash ashore, we hold the net up out of the water and when the wave starts to recede, we place our seine nets down until the next wave is upon us. On a count of “3-2-1 up!” we scoop our nets up to see what we have caught!

We catch blue fish, pinfish, Florida Pompano (which we talked about last column), jellies, various species of crab, seaweed and anything else that passes by. And holy mole-crab-oly.. we caught hundreds of mole crabs this week.

No exaggeration, there were really hundreds. So it felt appropriate to shine some fame on our invertebrate friends this week!

Mole crabs or sea cicada are often times called “sand

fleas”, “sand fiddlers” or “bait”. Mole crabs are not to be mistaken for sand fleas, but don’t say that too loud around a Topsail native. While sand fleas and mole crabs are both crustaceans, mole crabs are from a different order called Decapoda. Mole crabs have an exoskeleton, or hard outer shell, just like our common crabs and can be seen as small as a grain of rice or as large as 2 inches in length. Their exoskeleton is round to help them roll in the waves and is a beautiful grey color which helps them to blend in to the sand. Our beloved mole crabs do not feed on beach goers as sand fleas do, nor do they have claws, which make them the perfect catch for kids of all ages!

Mole crabs are found in the shifting sand of beaches where the waves break and wash ashore, also known as the swash zone. As the waves recede, they bury themselves into the sand with only their eyes and one antennae left above.

As the wave washes over them, they use a second pair of antenna to filter and feed on the plankton that flow by.

Pretty cool, right? To add to the awesomeness of these guys, they do all of their swimming and burying backwardunlike other crabs who can move foward, sideways and

This is another 18-hole course with many trees to hinder the flight of your disc, but it is an enjoyable up and down walk through the woods. It is here I had my best rounds, once shooting -8 (46) on the Par 54 course. I love it the most because it represents more than just a Disc Golf course. It is here that my wife and kids played dozens of times, cultivating a family outing rich in good shots (and plenty of bad ones!), but, more importantly, a family bonding over the years.

I love to go there with my family, we always have a nice time and it is fun to see the progress the twins have made over the years, even getting several birdies lately. The highlight, of course, was my wife’s hole in one on the 15th hole…

You don’t need a lot of equipment to play, just a Disc Golf disc, which you can get online, at Walmart or Target, or at Play it Again Sports.

So grab your disc, a bottle of water, and head out the course with your kids and enjoy a family outing!

as one of their main places to practice and play. Although there are always players on it, it doesn’t get extremely crowded during off times, so it is a great destination to spend a few hours.

Kure Beach Park has another tough course that takes a bit of getting used to, but after playing there you can always head on down to the beach for a soak and swim.

Both Castle Hayne and Kure Beach are 18-hole courses with PLENTY of trees to get in your way, suggesting an arsenal of shots are necessary to score well, including curves, rollers and hammer throws. If you want to back off a bit from these more difficult courses, there is an “easy” nine-hole course at a brewery in Carolina Beach, where you can go and rip through the course in less than a half hour. It has never been very busy, is a short course, and there is usually music playing. You don’t even need to buy anything to play, but if you do, the outdoor patio is a nice relaxing place to sit and have a drink or a meal.

Lady Pirate volleyball opens in summer league

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer The end of every school year brings tears for some, and goodbyes for many, especially in the world of highschool athletics. But it also welcomes new beginnings, and last Tuesday seven volleyball teams from around the area took the first step to what they all hope is a promising new fall season with the opening of the Topsail Summer Softball League.

While winning is not the primary criteria in the summer, as opposed to development, two teams emerged 2-0 from the first night - one of them being the host Lady Pirates and the other defending summer and NCHSIAA champion Wilmington Christian Academy. Pender finished the evening with a 1-1 mark, while a young Trask team’s night culminated with a 0-3 mark.

Due to the uneven (seven) number of teams, with Swansboro not returning from previous years, the Lady Titans and White Oak (1-2) played three matches while all others played two. A shorthanded Dixon squad (graduation night) finished 1-1.

Opening night brought its usual degree of unforced mistakes and inconsistencies. There was certainly plenty for all the coaches to emphasize in upcoming practices and, while he expressed

satisfaction with his team’s overall performance, veteran Topsail Coach Hill Pearsall was one of them.

“The last thing I told the girls tonight is I liked how much it looked like they were having fun, and that’s what I want,” Pearsall said. “We kind of got away from that the last couple of years and they really did have fun playing today. We made our share of mistakes but that will come with playing together more and more. We are moving people around, playing with different setters, and finding out how everyone fits together.

“I thought our hitters did very well. We have to work on timing and with our setters, get them to push the balls a little more outside, but overall I felt we played together as a team, worked hard, and had fun.”

The Lady Pirates opened play against country foe Trask. The young Lady Titans hung tough for a while but their inexperience and youth showed, especially with the serve/receive. Topsail led 9-6 when rising junior Madison Lofton took her place be-

hind the service line. Three Trask hitting mistakes and a kill from rising junior Gia Marinelli increased the Topsail lead to 13-6 before Lofton racked up three aces. The lead mushroomed to 19-6 before Lofton strung five more aces together. A Trask unforced error ended the Lady Pirates’ 16-point run to a 25-6.

Trask rebounded well and held leads of 9-7 and 10-8 midway through the second game before Lofton took service. Eight points – including three more Lofton aces, a Lofton kill, and a kill from rising senior Mallory George – Topsail led 16-0. A four-point surge made it 20-11, and a later three-point burst ended the match at 25-13.

Despite the absence of Head Coach Heather Moore and their best player – Heather’s daughter Logan – Dixon (20-3 and the Coastal 8 1A/2A Conference champions last year) gave Topsail a battle in their second match. Topsail took the lead for good at 12-9 then ran off two runs of two points and one of three before exploding for seven-straight to end the first game at 25-14.

Dixon led 16-13 in game two but fell behind 22-20 late. Two kills and an unforced Dixon error gave Topsail a 25-20 victory. Statistically, Marinelli finished the night with seven kills and three aces, risingsophomore setter Julia Sullivan had 11 assists, a block, and a pair of kills, Lofton

added eight kills and 10 aces, and George had five kills.

“I think we just came out to have fun and that’s what we did,” Marinelli said. “I think this team is a little closer knit than last year, and the rising juniors are especially close to each other, and we are close to the rising seniors, and we just have more of a connection and I think that’s really good. I think as we practice a little bit more we can be a really good team.”

Week two promised to be a challenge for Topsail with matches against Wilmington Christian Academy and county rival Pender.

Lady Pirates win three matches in week two Summer leagues, tournaments, and practices are all about development, establishing cohesion, and simply allowing coaches to find out just what they have in both returning players and newcomers – and that is how it should be.

But anytime – even early in the summer – you can defeat a strong and established program like the two-time defending summer champion Wilmington Christian Academy, which has also won the NCHSIAA state championship several times in succession, it is a positive sign.

In My Opinion Are you ready for some football ? We are about five weeks away from the opening day of football practice and I for one can not wait for this high school football season to start.

This year we will see if the Heide Trask Titan gridiron warriors will maintain their success. The team has won a school record amount of games for two years running. This team should be pretty darned good again this year under the direction of Jonathan Taylor.

The Titans are in the middle of playing in some seven on seven tournaments. They team is working on the passing game with last years quarterback Jacob Johnson. If you remember, Johnson was thrown into the fire after senior signal caller Tyrease Armstrong‘s season was ended on the first play from scrimmage in the opening game of the year against Topsail. From what I hear, Johnson is throwing the ball much better. He is a hand full running the ball.

If he can keep the defenses honest with his arm, the Titans will have a great year.

The Pender Patriots will begin year two under their young coach Tim Smith.

Coach Smith was under the gun last year. He got the job a little late and had to learn the team’s players along with their strengths and weaknesses in a hurry. He also had to instill his style of play along with what he wanted out of each of his players. Under the circum-

This year it is all on him.

His tenure at Pender may be determined by how this years team does.

Over at Topsail, Wayne Inman is still in charge. He has led the team to a pretty good nonconference record since the team joined the Mid-eastern Conference.

However, the Pirates are 5-14 in conference play in his three years at the helm.

That can’t bode well for the old ball coach, especially at a school where it seems like the parents run the athletic department.

Inman will have something he hasn’t had in a while this year. Rising junior Cody Wallis will be under center. He may be the best throwing quarterback that Inman has had since coming to the school. The Pirates can run the football.

Add a passing threat and this may be the year that the team surprises some folks in the Mid-eastern Conference.

As you can tell from this column, I am ready for some football. Are you?

Post & Voice Top Performers Year in Review:December

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer If there is one quick observation you can make about new Topsail High School girls’ basketball Coach Chris Williamson is he is not afraid to hit the ground running.

Just six days after being approved for his new position by the Pender County Board of Education, Williamson had the Lady Pirates on the courts at Trask and Laney playing seven games in three days in the challenging Flight 22 Basketball Tournament.

Summer camps, tournaments, and leagues are generally tough enough with athletes working or on vacation, or involved in multiple sports where they simply can’t attend scheduled events, but taking on six teams with combined 2017-18 records of 111-53 with a roster loaded with sophomores (four) and freshmen (three), and missing three of your top players at various time in the tournament is definitely ambitious.

The Lady Pirates finished their seven games with a 2-5 record, but the wins and losses don’t tell the story. Of the five defeats, one was by seven to local powerhouse East Bladen (27-2), and one was by two to 4A Millbrook on a buzzer-beater and one was by eight. After falling to North Piedmont3A Conference co-champion Carson (25-4) in the knock-out run Wednesday, Williamson discussed the good, the bad, and the ugly.

“The good was a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and the effort,” Williamson said. “The girls were committed to taking away passes, they were committed to being physical and not backing down to a very good (Carson) team that beat them by 30 (58-23) on the first day, and by not being scared of anybody. That will payoff later down the road against the New Hanover’s, Hoggard’s, and Laney’s.

The Pats schedule included another match with a White Oak team that they beat in week one along with the Topsail Pirates. The Pats beat White Oak in three sets before falling to Topsail in two sets.

did not stop the Patriots from taking the three-set win. The scores were 25-19, 20-25 and 15-5.

In the second match of the night the Patriots battled what may be the best Topsail lineup in quite some time.

The Lady Pirates earned the sweep by the scores of 25-15 and 25-16.

Pender struggled hitting the ball against the potent Pirates, something the Coach Davis expects. “Our hitting was a little off, but that is normally the last part of the game to come around after a long break.”

Davis was impressed with his teams play on the back line. He is using the summer

league to work on different combinations in hopes of the team developing the all important team chemistry.

“We tried some new combinations to see what may work.

Taylor Blake had a good night on the backline for us as well as Sam Wells. That looks to be one of our strengths. We should have excellent depth defensively on the backline with several girls that can play and serve well for us back there. Sophomore middle hitter Alex Colvin had a good night up front for us.

We’ll look to build on this solid night this week as we play both Tuesday and Thursday this week.”

The winter sports season was in full swing and the area basketball teams along with the wrestling programs were wide open.

Week 1. The Trask boy’s basketball team was still undefeated after winning three games. B.J. Jordan and Jaylin Mashack led the Titans with 13 points apiece with Tiyuan Ballard chipping in 12 in the win over Wilmington Christian Academy. The Titans beat Topsail later in the week. Jaylin Mashack had 18 points with Jujuan Carr chipping in 15. Jakel Newton had 13 and Ballard.

Week 2. The Topsail Lady Pirates remained hot. Payton Little scored 18 points, while snaring 14 rebounds in a come from behind win over Clinton. Julia Sullivan had 11 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals in the win.

The Trask ladies earned their second win of the year, a demolishing of Hobbton behind 21 points from super frosh Anisa Lewis. NyKia James chipped in 11. Angel Boykin scored 8 points with all but two Titans scoring.

The Trask boy’s basketball team remained undefeated after beating Hoggard and Hobbton. Tiyuan Ballard had a double-double against Hobbton with 12 points and 13 boards. The senior standout averaged 12 boards for the week. Jujuan Carr had 20 points in the win over Hoggard.

Week 3. The Topsail wrestling team won the Titan du-

els with a perfect 5-0 record.

They were led by Noah Lavalle, Nathan Bray and Tyler Dempsey.

The Titan wrestling team went 2-3 on the day. Carlos Ruiz went 5-0 while Rogan Heath and Eric Sanchez went 4-1.

The Topsail swim team had a good week. Madison Hoover had a good day in the pool. She was first in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 freestyle. She was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that finished first. Delaney Poppella also had a great day.

Kennard MacVaugh won two events on the boy’s side.

Both the boys and girls won the meet.

The Trask girls picked up their first conference win in over two years with a victory over Lejeune. Anisa Lewis led the way with 17 points. She led the Titans in their loss to Richlands with 21 points. She averaged 19 points a game for the week.

The Trask men continued their dominance with wins over Lejeune and Richlands.

Jujuan Carr had 18 points to lead the Titans over Richlands while Tiyuan Ballard chipped in 17 points along with five rebounds and three blocks. In the win over Lejeune Jaylin Mashack went off for27 points while Watson Orr and Jakel Newton each contributed 10.

Lady Titan spikers learning to play on the fly

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer After the Heide Trask Lady Titan volleyball team finished the second week of the summer league series without a

win, one could expect the average coach to be downtrodden and defeated.

However, veteran Coach Cathy Claris is not the usual coach. Ever the optimist, Coach Claris dusted her team

and her self off after going 0-3 and remained determined to use the summer schedule to get better.

“The summer league is not about winning. It’s about improving your skill level and

learning to play successfully with your teammates so your team can be competitive when the conference begins.”

The Lady Titans opened the evening prepared to play two matches. They found out after

the first match that they were slated to play three times, a fact that Claris said affected her team mentally.

Top sports stories of the 2017-18 school year

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The 2017-18 school year was one of great accomplishments along with some heartbreaking results and decisions. The Post Voice would like to touch on the six biggest sports stories of the year.

We will run one each week.

Number 5. Pender High School has been under the direction of Principal Chris Madden for a couple of years now and the landscape is ever changing under his watch.

The Patriot coaching staff looks profoundly different.

Although some of the changes may not be of a direct decision that Madden has made, the school has a different look.

Freshman Jayne expected to excell at Trask

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer When a freshman studentathlete enters high school it can be very intimidating. If that student-athlete was an above average athlete in a sport they can often be looked at as a savior of sorts. While rising freshman Lacy Jayne may not be looked upon as a savior, she is definitely going to be counted on to help in at least two sports.

Miss Jayne is an accomplished softball player. She has played on winning teams her whole life. She was part of the conference champion Cape fear Middle school volleyball program and was also a contributing member of the softball team.

This year Lacy will try and make her mark on the Titans young volleyball team in the fall before trying to help a struggling softball team during the spring.

There is no doubt that freshman Lacy Jayne is entering Trask as a winner.

made some changes in the teams practice habits. Although he admits it will take some time, the team seems to be responding to his mindset.

The softball team found themselves under the tutelage of former Heide Trask head coach Corrina Reece. Reece is an accomplished coach with many successful seasons under her belt. Her goal was to change the team’s mindset.

She hit the ground running and the results were positive.

The Lady Patriots made the playoffs and won their firstround game. They were also the talk of the area with a positive presence on the field, which will enable Reece to schedule a more competitive non-conference slate in the future.

change in the Pender High school athletic department is the announcement that Bevin Stokes was to step down as the athletic director effective on July 1st. Madden wasted little time in finding her replacement. He tapped Head Volleyball coach Matt Davis as her successor.

Davis brings a renewed energy to the athletic department along with a calm and cool demeanor that will bode well for the school along with each and every coach and student-athlete. In most eyes, this was a great hire.

That did not help the team in their first match as they fell to Laney in two sets. The scores were 25-14 and 25-13.In match two, the Lady Titans played what is beginning to look like a powerhouse in the Topsail Pirates. The Lady Titans were overwhelmed in game one and fell 25-6. However, in game two the team showed a glimpse of what it could be in the up-

coming season, taking a hard earned 25-13 win. The Lady Pirates bounced back with a 15-5 win to take the match.

With two matched under their belt, the Lady Titans limped into the third match of the night against the White Oak Lady Vikings. The Titans fatigue showed as they fell 2515 and 25-13.

The fact that the Lady Titans are 0-6 after two weeks of

play does not faze Claris. She is looking for improvement and chemistry.

“With some practices under our belt, we will continue to improve. I’m excited about the possibilities. Also the JV team is really quite talented already with upcoming 9th graders who were in the middle school championship this May, so I think we have a bright future.”

and they are having a good time on the court, and that’s what we want. I want them to have fun being with each other and playing with each other. We have a lot of depth.

The only place we do not currently have a lot of depth is middle hitter, we only have two, and we’ll have to look at that.

“We have four or five outsides, several DS’s (defensive specialists), and three setters, and they are all playing very well. Like I said last week, I just love the way they are playing together. It’s been a while since I felt we had a team where they are all jelling so quickly, and are so eager.”

The opening game against WCA (3-1) was tied at 5-5 before a four-point Lady Pirate run – fueled by two aces from

rising junior Gia Marinelli and a kill from classmate Madison Lofton – produced a 9-5 lead. WCA fought back, however, and forged ties at 9-9, 10-10, 12-12, 15-15, and 1616 before Marinelli racked up three more aces and Rachel Hobson nailed a kill for a 2016 Topsail lead. After a single WCA point, the Lady Pirates ran it out on kills by Lofton and Marinelli.

WCA held a 7-6 lead in the second game just prior to an eight-point Topsail surge.

Lofton had a pair of aces, rising senior Mallory George added a kill, and Marinelli had as block that helped forge a 15-8 advantage. WCA never recovered in the seven-point loss. Marinelli (four kills, five aces, three blocks), rising junior Julia Sullivan (eight assists, two kills, an ace, and a

block), Lofton (four kills, two aces), and senior defensive specialist Rena Marrotta (11 digs) were the statistical leaders in the match.

The Lady Pirates played winless Trask (0-6) in the second match, and the young Lady Titans’ inability to defend the serve heavily contributed to a 2-1 (25-6, 23-25, 15-8) Topsail victory. Lady Pirate servers recorded 22 aces – Lofton had four, Marinelli added five, Sullivan had four) in the three games. But credit to the Lady Titans as they overcame serve-receiver miscues and 14 unforced errors in bouncing back for a hardfought, second game win.

The third match was against a perennially-strong Pender squad with the Lady Pirates coming away with a 2-0 (25-15, 25-16) win. Topsail

Overall I am very happy with the girls. They responded well, they seemed to buy into the things that I want to do with them, and they were unselfish. All of that tells me we have a chance to do some special things this year.”

Topsail opened Monday against East Bladen without senior center Payton Little, who has a day-time summer

job every weekday except Wednesday, falling to the Lady Eagles 49-42. The Lady Pirates led 14-13 early but an 8-0 East Bladen run put them in a 21-14 hole after the first half (two halves of 20 minutes each with running clock). An opening 12-4 run, fueled by rising seniors Dashaniq Sidbury (six points) and Madi Kita (13) produced a 26-25 lead. East Bladen outgunned Topsail 24-16 from there to secure the victory.

The second game was against Carson and the Lady Cougars were simply too strong and too quick for Topsail on their way to a 58-23 victory. Kita, rising sophomore Sydney Hartgrove, and rising junior Julia Sullivan led Topsail with four points each.

Little arrived for the eve-

ning game and she made her presence felt immediately with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocked shots as Topsail defeated A. C. Reynolds 47-42. Sullivan (10 points, seven rebounds, a block, and a steal) and Little worked a high-low post offense that worked to perfection at times, with Sidbury and rising senior Lauren Caveness each adding five points.

Tuesday produced a pair of losses, one during the day without Little and one at night without Sullivan, falling 47-23 to Orange County and 53-51 to Millbrook. Hartgrove led Topsail with five points against Orange. No stats were kept in a 53-51 evening loss to Millbrook.

Knock-out day Wednesday started with a 35-21 win over a split Laney team. Little

is now under the direction of a young man with big plans in Tim Smith. He replaced Bob Via. The Patriots showed some improvement under Smith. He has a different style and provides a different perspective on where the team is headed. Although the teams record may not indicate a vast improvement, many in the know could see it.

Coach Gary Battle retired and left the men’s basketball team and the girls varsity softball teams position open.

Madden brought Pender alumni Craig Wilson on board to handle the basketball program. Although the record was about the same as the year before, the team was more disciplined in their style of play along with their on-court demeanor. Wilson

Wallis to be signal-caller for Topsail Pirates

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The game of football can be described as orchestrated chaos. It has been said that the team that runs the football has the edge in most cases.

However, without the ability to throw the football, there is no balance. That makes it hard to beat good teams. The Topsail Pirates have struggled to throw the ball. However, that is about to change with the changing of the guard at the quarterback position.

Rising junior Cody Wallis will be taking over the quarterback position for Coach Wayne Inman this season.

Wallis has proven himself on the junior varsity level and should make an immediate impact on the field.

Cody can make all the tough throws. With a great running attack, he should flourish as the varsity signal caller.

The Mid-Eastern Conference had better beware. Cody Wallis is taking over the reins of the Topsail Pirate football team.

Pier fishing is good

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Fishing Fanatic This time of year the pier fishing on Topsail Island begins to heat up. Anglers who want to get up early or fish late will find that the spots and croakers will bite bloodworms and shrimp.

There have been a few blues and Spanish being caught around the inlets. The bigger fish are biting live baits while the smaller ones are biting clarks spoons.

The inland bite has been good with a few reds being caught in the creeks and such. Live baits along with soft plastics and gulp will do here. The flounder bite has been pretty good with anglers using live menhaden along with Gulp baits to entice these tasty fish to bite.

There have been a few sheepshead being caught around docks and other structures. Sand fleas will work here. Remember that these fish are hard to hook.

The freshwater bite has been decent but not spectacular. Early in the morning or late in the day is when you want to fish the panfish.

Red worms or a bream buster will do the trick here. limited Pender (2-1-1) to a trio of two-point runs in the first game,, and broke the game open with a four-pointer for a 10-6 advantage, and a fivepoint outburst that opened up an 18-10 lead. The cats are a night time affair right now. Cut up eel or chicken livers will work here.

This week’s fishing tip There is nothing worse than getting out on the water and finding out you have left your fresh water tackle box at home or vice versa.

What? Did you say you only have one tackle box and that you fish out of it for both types of fishing?

Many anglers make the mistake of fishing out of one box for both types of fishing. While there is nothing wrong with this I would suggest that you make up two tackle boxes. Make one for the salt water and put your best saltwater stuff in it as well as enough hooks and sinkers to make sure you don’t get caught off guard.

Your fresh water box should include plenty of bobbers if you are a panfish enthusiast along with hooks and such. Make sure that both boxes have an assortment of lures.

Finally, if you use a boat I would suggest having a box that stays on the boat. This box should include things like scissors, knives and pliers.

“We are having fun and we are playing well together,” Sullivan said. “We may not have that single named star but we have a lot of good players that want to play as a team, and that’s a good thing.

We are still a pretty young team so I feel like we are still growing as a team. Gia (Marinelli) and I and the other hitters have been working a lot on our timing in practice and it seems to be paying off, and we have a more athletic team. If we stay together we should do well this year.”

Week 4. The Christmas break limited things. The Trask wrestling team had a trio of grapplers go 4-0 in two tri meets. Rogan Heath, Zion Cruse and Jonathan Lewis all were undefeated for the week.

Noah Lavalle and Nathan Bray had good weeks and remained 1-2 on the Post & Voice top 8 wrestlers list.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer On any given fall Friday night recent graduate Chris Devane could be found on a football field with a blue and white jersey with the word Patriots written across the front of it. He was a member of the Pender Patriot varsity football team for his entire tenure at the Pender County school.

Chris played hard on every single play that he touched the football field. He worked hard in practice and became a good football player through sheer hard work and dedication.

Mr. Devane found his way to the basketball court last winter. Again, he gave 110 percent and was a contributor for first year coach Craig Wilson.

With Chris Devane’s high school career in the rear-view mirror, He will look to the next chapter in his life.

There is one thing for sure, Chris Devane gave it his all for Pender High.

Thomas Leon Bigford ATKINSON -- Thomas Leon Bigford, 78, of Atkinson was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior Thursday, June 21, 2018.

He was born June 7, 1940 in Bladen County, the son of the late Thomas Moore Bigford and Katie Benson Bigford. Also remembered is his brother, Herman Bigford who preceded Leon in death.

Leon is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Becky Malpass Bigford; sons, Rickey Bigford and Randy Bigford (Sandy); grandchildren, Amber Kinlaw (Cam), Justin Bigford, and Carter Bigford; great grandchildren, Ayden and Brailyn; sisters, Mary Woodcock, Annette Horrell and Ruth Pridgen; brothers, Louis Bigford (Trina) and Charles Bigford; many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1940 in Craven County, NC and was the son of the late Har ry Albert and Bercha Adell Gilbert Grimmer. He was also predeceased by his brother, Albert “Al” Grimmer.

Between June and October, on the evening of the full moon, come for a guided tour through the Manor House for possible paranormal activities.

By Bill Howard Post & Voice Columnist Many people suffer from something called G.A.S. For those that don’t know, it stands for Gear Acquisition Syndrome. The acronym is often used in the photography world because photographers constantly need something they don’t have.

Yes, the outdoors world suffers the same symptoms as well. Go to any archery competition and Vegas would put good odds that the majority of the competitors will constantly talk about how they would do if they had a different release, used a different arrow or vane, or even a new bow. It is probably just human nature to be honest.

Of course, it isn’t limited to competition. Hunters get wide-eyed for a new carbon scent-controled, mosquito and rain proof, camouflaged gillie suit that comes in three different must-have patterns.

Or perhaps the new bolt action with gas chambered recoil control in synthetic graphite composite causing it to weigh less than the ammunition that is in the magazine.

And don’t forget anglers. A sport in which you can literally catch just about anything as long as you have a hook, line, and bait may require the most gear if you ask one that is dedicated to his passion.

Think about it. Not only does and angler ‘need’ a composite one-piece graphite rod that is strong as steel yet as giving as a rubber band, he also has to have line that cannot be seen, tangle proof, snag-free, and able to lift 500 pounds.

Attached to the line needs to

be a lure that mimics a baitfish of choice in distress but not dead, that includes sound wave technology and scent emitting pores.

Add to that, a boat that can float even if it is filled with three times too much weight and water, with a motor that can get it from point A to point B in reverse time, and a computerized doppler fish finder that projects a hologram to the angler of the surface below as well as a hologram in the water of more baitfish to attract larger catches.

Yes, that same angler also has to have a trailer with automatic backing features for the boat when it isn’t in the water and a self-driving truck that can pull said boat through the harshest environments, steepest hills and ramps, and bumpiest roads while seeming to glide on air for the occupants.

So the question of the day is this, does gear make one happy, or does the actual activity make one happy?

Years ago, there was a man in my home area (we didn’t live in town, so the same part of the county would be a better description) that absolutely loved fishing. If the weather per mitted, and sometimes when it didn’t, it was a guarantee that Dennis would have a line wet.

Now it could just be my memory, but I don’t ever recall seeing Dennis without a smile on his face. If he wasn’t fishing, it was only because he had to work. His worked just so he could fish. It was a given.

Now you have to ask yourself when you come across people that are always smiling, “what makes them so happy?”

We find out a lot about people now with social media being so prevalent, as we can spot those that we think are happy complaining about everything. But there are a few that are always perfectly content, sometimes even ecstatic about llife.

The answer likely falls into

the category of ‘they found what they love.’ Few people find that unfortunately.

As far as Dennis, I believe he was as happy sitting on five-gallon bucket beside the lake with a cane pole and earthworms as he was when he was casting for largemouth.

To Dennis, life was fishing. To Dennis, fishing was life. It is what made him happy.

Rather than more gear, maybe happiness is the thing we should strive to acquire.

Planning Board Meeting Cancellation for July

Pender 4-H’ers win medals at District Activity Day This year’s 4-H District Activity Day for the Southeast District, held at Lenoir Com-

munity College in Kinston June 22, had 164 participants giving presentations, and 500

people total attend the event.

Five Pender County 4-H members competed at Districts.

Zane Andersen, 15, won the gold medal with his Forestry and Wildlife presentation. Olivia Andersen, 13, won a bronze medal in her Health and Fitness presentation. Morgan Hansen, 14, won a silver medal in the Beef Char Grill category. Lillie Hansen, 12, won a silver medal in the Pork Char Grill Category.

Ethan Pfeil, 5, was a first time presenter in the Clover Bud Division.

Zane, Morgan, and Lillie will now move on to the State Presentation Finals, which will be held at North Carolina State University July 21.

4-H is North Carolina’s largest youth development organization, equipping more than 263,700 young people each year with the skills to succeed and improve the world around them.

Tips for a festive 4th of July party might need, as guests will be looking to stay cool and hydrated throughout the party.

When inviting guests, ask if anyone has any particular food allergies or dietary restrictions. Plenty of delicious vegetable dishes can be cooked right on the grill for vegetarian guests, and foods like fish might be more suitable for guests with preexisting health conditions who should not eat red meat.

Fireworks are synonymous with summer. They mark special occasions, festivals and warm-weather holidays like Independence Day. When handled by professionals, fireworks can be quite the spectacle. However, if lit by amateurs, fireworks can be very risky.

Though they offer awe-inspiring views, fireworks can be dangerous. According to data collected in 2008 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 7,000 people in the United States were treated in emergency rooms for injuries sustained from fireworks during the period of June 20 to July 20, 2008. Nearly half of all people injured were children under the age of 15. Most injuries occurred to young people under the age of 20.

The Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program states that fireworks injuries often occur around the injured patients’ homes. and fireworks injuries require hospitalization far more often than injuries that do not involve fireworks.

All types of fireworks have inherent danger, even sparklers. Sparklers burn at more than 1,000 F and can ignite clothing very quickly. Those who take an active roll in the lighting and shooting of fireworks are more prone to injury. The most common injuries include burns, injuries to the eyes from cuts and foreign objects lodged in the eyes.

Although fireworks injuries are common, they also are largely preventable.

The following are a few safety tips aimed at helping people avoid injury when enjoying fireworks displays.

• Keep your distance. It is important for all people watching fireworks to keep their distance from the explosives. Even the best-made fireworks can sometimes veer off course and fly into spectators. The further the distance away, the better chance for safety.

• Avoid amateurs. Professional fireworks companies know the ins and outs of fireworks and often have safety procedures in place. Fireworks may be ignited remotely by a computer or an electronic fuse device, keeping people away from ground zero. An amateur may not have the dexterity or skills to get away from the lit firework in time. When enjoying fireworks, just make sure the person putting on the show is a professional.

• Exercise caution around fireworks. Some people construct their own fireworks from spare parts or try to up the ante by adding an accelerant to achieve a bigger boom. These practices are dangerous and can lead to highly unpredictable explosions. It’s never good to make your own fireworks show, but if you find yourself at a party where someone is experimenting with fireworks, exercise extreme caution.

Fireworks can be a fun spectacle when handled by professionals in a safe manner. Families can consider watching a city- or town-sponsored fireworks display instead of risking injury with at-home pyrotechnics.

To Americans, Independence Day is a meaningful holiday and often the centerpiece of summertime festivities.

Commonly referred to as the 4th of July, the holiday celebrates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, in which the colonies officially declared their independence from Great Britain.

Among the more patriotic days on the American calendar, the 4th of July is also among the most festive. Fireworks displays occur across the country, and backyard barbecues commonly begin in the afternoon and last well into the night. Party hosts who want to ensure their 4th of July parties go off without a hitch can consider the following tips.

• Coordinate the party with the local fireworks display. Nearly every community has some type of fireworks display. As a result, neighboring towns often agree to spread the events out so not all the displays occur on the same night. Communities might host their displays on the 3rd or 4th of July, and hosts should determine which night their community will be offering their show.

Because fireworks shows are such a big part of the holiday, individuals might want to host their party the night of their town’s festivities. This enables guests to enjoy the display from the backyard or walk to a nearby open field to enjoy the display.

For hosts who are tailoring their party around the local fireworks show, be sure the guests arrive early enough so everyone can enjoy some barbecue before the show begins because hosts won’t want to be hovering over the grill when the show starts.

• Have something for everyone.

Independence Day festivities are for people of all ages, so hosts should have something for everyone. Adults may appreciate a cold beer to accompany their hamburgers and fireworks, but be sure to have plenty of other cold beverages on hand as well. Stock up on soda, ice water and other popular non-alcoholic beverages like lemonade and iced tea. Temperatures on the 4th of July are usually pretty warm, so hosts should buy more than they think they

• Decorate. Just because the party is liable to take place outdoors doesn’t mean hosts can’t decorate. The 4th of July is all about the red, white and blue, so be sure to display the American flag and decorate in the colors of the U.S.A. Purchase Independence Day cups and plates, and encourage guests to wear red, white and blue to the party. Visit the local party store and purchase some red, white and blue balloons.

Even the food can be decorated.

Instead of making regular cookies, make American flag cookies complete with red, white and blue coloring, and do the same with the cupcakes. Bartenders can even use food coloring to make the drinks red, white or blue.

• Host a fireworks display. Fireworks are illegal in many states, so hosts should consult the authorities as to the local fireworks laws before hosting their own party. If fireworks are legal, enlist the help of friends and host your own small show. Keep the neighbors in mind when hosting a private fireworks show, and always keep children away from the fireworks.

If fireworks are illegal in your state, it’s still possible to host a fireworks show.

Rent a big screen television for the occasion and take it out to the backyard.

Once the sun sets, turn on a televised fireworks event (the Macy’s-sponsored New York City fireworks show is very popular among viewers, as is the display that takes place in Boston) and encourage guests to sit down on the ground and enjoy the show just as they would if they were in attendance. The show can be just as entertaining, and guests will likely appreciate that they don’t have to sit in endless traffic once the display has ended.

The 4th of July is one of the most festive days on America’s calendar. With a few simple tips, hosts can ensure a magical night for family and friends.

Willard Outreach to host annual July 4 celebration

Willard Outreach Organization, Inc. will partner with Old Skool Car Club to host the 12th annual Fourth of July Celebration. The festivities will begin July 4 at 10 a.m. with a parade that is set to begin at Union Rescue and end at Willard Outreach Community Center, located at 9955 N.C. Hwy. 11 in Willard. The Grand Marshal will be Mrs. Mary Gore Jordan of Maple Hill.

The celebration will begin at Willard Outreach Center shortly after the parade ends. Those who participate can enjoy a classic car and motorcycle show, music and entertainment. The community gathering will include a plate sale with a delicious variety of food, as well as games for both kids and adults. It will be a great chance for local children to enjoy the center’s new playground, as well.

Face painting, vendors and a cash raffle will be on hand. The celebration will culminate with a fireworks display beginning at 8 p.m. Area residents will also have an opportunity to meet some of the key leaders from the community and surrounding areas throughout the day.

The event serves as a fundraiser for community events in the Willard area. All proceeds will go toward the operation and support of the programs and events that Willard Outreach Organization Inc. hosts throughout the year. The center sponsors a variety of children’s events such as a kids’ activity day, a summer lunch program and a school supply giveaway. Willard Outreach also offers a senior citizen grocery program, a breast cancer walk of support, holiday community dinner and turkey give-away, just to name a few. The center also provides educational programs, fitness programs and workshops designed to enrich and inspire the community.

Willard Outreach Organization has served northern Pender County and the surrounding area for more than 24 years.

“This organization started with a dream and the belief that there is nothing that cannot be accomplished with hard work and unity,” said Clifton West, President of Willard Outreach Organization. “I always ask the local people, ‘Why not our community? Why can’t we come together and live as one, and have all the things that other communities have - a place for our kids, for our grandkids and for their kids to grow, learn and play?’”

Try your hand at being creative with your next batch of peaches.

Peach iced tea 4 cups water divided 3 family size tea bags 2 peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced ½ cup granulated sugar In a large pot over high heat, bring three cups water to a rolling boil. Remove from heat.

Add the tea bags, cover and steep for 15-20 minutes.

Meanwhile, place peaches and one cup water in a blender and blend until very smooth, at least three minutes. Pour the peach mixture, tea, and sugar into a one gallon pitcher. Fill the pitcher to the top with water, stir until blended. Serve over ice with a wedge of fresh peach.

Brioche french toast with peaches This recipe is delicious served with sausage links.

1 cup brown sugar

½ cup butter, melted 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon, divided 3 large ripe peaches, pitted and thinly sliced 1 loaf Brioche, Challah, Italian or French bread, cut into one inch whole slices 6 large eggs 1½ cups half-and-half or milk 1 tablespoon vanilla extract In a large bowl combine brown sugar, butter, and 2-teaspoons of cinnamon. Add sliced peaches and toss to coat well. Spread peach mixture over bottom of 13-x-9-inch pan sprayed with vegetable spray.

Arrange slices of bread on top.

In a bowl mix eggs, milk, vanilla, and two teaspoons cinnamon until well blended.

Pour over bread, soaking bread completely. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight.

Bake, covered for 50 minutes at 375 degrees. If you want the peaches very tender bake a little longer covered, about 5 minutes. Uncover and bake for 5 -8 more minutes. Remove from oven and let stand for 5-10 minutes. Serve warm with cinnamon sauce.

Cinnamon sauce 2/3 cup granulated sugar 4 teaspoons cornstarch Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 1/3 cups water Mix sugar, cornstarch, salt, cinnamon, and water together and bring to a boil in the microwave. Pour over individual servings of French Toast.

Peach and mango salsa 1½ cups red tomatoes, chopped ¾ cup ripe peaches, pitted,

peeled and chopped ½ cup sweet onion, chopped ½ cup yellow pepper, chopped ½ cup mango, pitted, peeled and chopped 1 small jalapeno pepper, seeded and ribs removed, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1½ teaspoons lime juice Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon fresh cilantro minced Tortilla chips for serving In a large nonreactive bowl, combine tomatoes peaches, mango, onion, yellow pepper, jalapeno pepper, cloves, lime juice, and cilantro, and stir gently to combine well. Add salt to taste. Cover and refrigerate for at least three hours before serving. Serve with tortilla chips.

Pork tenderloin with peach sauce 1 two-pound pork tenderloin 3 cups peaches, pitted and cut into small cubes 2 cloves garlic, chopped then smashed 1 teaspoon powdered, dried thyme 1 tablespoon powdered, dry rosemary 1 tablespoon powdered, dry sage Salt and fresh ground black pepper, to taste ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil, plus more for searing 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar ½ cup granulated sugar 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 cup chicken broth ¼ cup dry white wine In a large bowl mix together garlic, thyme, rosemary, sage, salt, pepper, olive oil, and vinegar. in the marinade, cover and refrigerate for 2-6 hours.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Drizzle olive oil into a large skillet and heat over medium heat. Remove pork from marinade. Add the pork tenderloin to skillet and turn to brown evenly on all sides, for about 10-12 minutes.

Transfer the tenderloin to a baking pan, and bake in a 325-degree oven for about 2025 minutes or until thermometer reads 145 degrees. Let pork rest before slicing, cover with foil, and keep warm in a 200-degree oven until ready to serve.

While pork tenderloin is baking, in a medium skillet, over moderate low heat, combine peaches, sugar, lemon juice, pepper, and chicken broth. Cook over medium low heat until the peaches just start to break apart, about 15 minutes.

Add the wine and simmer until the sauce becomes shiny and thick. The peaches will fall apart to make their own sauce.

Remove from the heat.

To serve, slice the tenderloin on the bias ½-inch thick and serve topped with peach sauce.

Sour cream peach cake 3 large ripe peaches, peeled, pitted and sliced 1 stick butter, at room temperature 1½ cups granulated sugar, divided 3 large eggs, room temperature 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Grease a 9-inch square baking dish or pan.

In a bowl with an electric mixer cream butter and one cup sugar for 4-5 minutes; beat until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, and beat, then add sour cream and vanilla; mix until batter is smooth.

In another bowl whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. With the mixer on low, slowly add the dry ingredients to the batter and mix just until combined.

In a small bowl combine ½ cup sugar and the cinnamon.

Spread half the batter evenly in prepared pan. Top with half of the peach slices, then sprinkle with 2/3 of the sugar/cinnamon mixture.

Spread the remaining batter on top, arrange the remaining peach slices on top of that and sprinkle with the remaining sugar mixture.

Bake for 45-55 minutes in a 350-degree oven until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Transfer to a rack to cool for at least 20 minutes.

Cut into squares and serve warm or at room temperature topped with ice cream or whipped cream, if desired.

The awards were presented during the annual Pender Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) recognition event -AY 7ES $AVIS $IRECTOR of Pender Adult Services, expressed heartfelt appreciation to all attendees and the award winners as he praised them for being the “heartbeat of our community.�

Award winners Jimmy Basden received the ,IFETIME !CHIEVEMENT !WARD honoring his many years of service to the Pender community. Davis notes that “Jimmy is an incredible volunteer resource. He has served on Pender Adult Services Board of Directors and has saved time and money with his technical maintenance insights.�

He is also a member of ReGIONAL !GING !DVISORY #OUNCIL and on the administrative BOARD AT "URGAW -ETHODIST #HURCH WHERE HE HAS ALSO served as a trustee. Jimmy is an honorary member of the "URGAW 2OTARY #LUB WHERE HE supports a variety of community programs.

-ANY 0ENDER #OUNTY RESIdents will also remember that he was one of the founding MEMBERS OF THE 0ENDER #OUNTY Rescue Squad.

Eva Briggs is a President’s Bronze Award winner who served more than 100 hours in 2017. She is a retired teacher who is active throughout the community. In almost every case, students reading grade levels increased and testing scores revealed students retained much of what they read. This year RSVP placed Reading Buddy volunteers in lVE 0ENDER #OUNTY 3CHOOLS Volunteers met with their assigned students and read one-on-one and helped build vocabulary, comprehension, and a better desire to read more often.

Be careful in the heat this summer

By Rebecca Boggs, RN Pender Adult Services As temperatures soar to record highs in our area, so does the risk for heat related conditions. Everyone exposed to the heat is at risk but the elderly are more prone than younger people for several reasons: As we age our bodies don’t adjust as well to temperature changes. Decreased kidney function makes it harder for the body to conserve fluid.

Some prescription medications may interfere with the body’s ability to adjust to temperature changes. And the elderly are more likely to have at least one chronic medical condition that may interfere with the body’s normal response to heat.

It’s important for everyone to exercise precaution when temperatures soar. Drink plenty of cool, non-alcoholic

beverages. Water is best! Rest and limit activity during the hottest time of the day.

Stay in air-conditioned places as much as possible and wear light weight clothing.

But it’s particularly important for elderly people to take extra steps to stay cool.

One of the most important things we all can do is learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat related illness and what to do. Heat exhaustion is a mild form of heat related illness that can develop after exposure to high temperatures with inadequate fluid intake.

Heat stroke is a very serious form of heat related illness that is a medical emergency.
