Sheriff says Paitin Fields investigation ongoing By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher The investigation into the death of a five-year-old Burgaw girl in November 2017 continues, according to Pender County Sheriff Alan Cutler. Fields arrived unresponsive at Pender Memorial Hospital Nov. 13 2017. Fields was transferred to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. At NHRMC, Fields was
found to have no electrical activity in the brain Nov. 15, 2017. The autopsy report lists her cause of death as ligature strangulation and there was evidence of sexual trauma. Community activists held a press conference Mar. 21 in New Hanover County demanding action from law enforcement. The Pender County Sheriff ’s Office issued a statement responding to activists, saying the investigation is very active.
“From the beginning of this investigation we stated that we wanted to be able to determine the truth surrounding Paitin’s death, while protecting the integrity of our investigation in a manner that will allow the correct individual(s) to face charges and ultimately be convicted for the crimes they have committed. Woman arrested after fake sex assault report From Staff Reports A 21-year-old Burgaw was arrested for making a false report to police. T h e Pe n d e r C o u n t y Sheriff ’s Office arrested Savannah Nikole Lewis for one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report regarding her allegations of being sexually assaulted at the Rocky Point Wendy’s restaurant on March 20, 2019. Lewis called Pender County 911 Mar. 20 and reported Robert Leviticus McKoy sexually assaulted her while she was in the women’s restroom. She repeated these allegations to responding deputies and a detective. A warrant charging McKoy with one count of misdemeanor sexual battery and assault on a female was obtained based

Robert Leviticus McKoy turned himself in Mar. 22, and was able to provide evidence to show Lewis provided false and misleading information to detectives about the sexual assault. Charges against McKoy will be dismissed. Lewis was arrested Mar. 23, and was released after posting a secured bond in the amount of $750.00.

A new Christian-based university is coming to the area. Former Pender County Commissioner Dr. Jimmy Tate has announced the opening of Mt. Calvary University (MCU). MCU is an emerging regional university that will offer certificate, diploma and degree programs to adult learners with diverse life experiences. Classes are set to begin in May and will be held in New Hanover, Pender and Duplin counties; providing both an academically rigorous and a Christianfocused education.
