Sheriff says Paitin Fields investigation ongoing

By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher The investigation into the death of a five-year-old Burgaw girl in November 2017 continues, according to Pender County Sheriff Alan Cutler.

Fields arrived unresponsive at Pender Memorial Hospital Nov. 13 2017. Fields was transferred to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. At NHRMC, Fields was

found to have no electrical activity in the brain Nov. 15, 2017. The autopsy report lists her cause of death as ligature strangulation and there was evidence of sexual trauma.

Community activists held a press conference Mar. 21 in New Hanover County demanding action from law enforcement.

The Pender County Sheriff ’s Office issued a statement responding to activists, saying the investigation is very active.

“From the beginning of this investigation we stated that we wanted to be able to determine the truth surrounding Paitin’s death, while protecting the integrity of our investigation in a manner that will allow the correct individual(s) to face charges and ultimately be convicted for the crimes they have committed. This has not changed. “We understand there are opinions circulating within and outside our com-

munity why no one has been charged in this case. We continue to do everything possible to get justice for Paitin by keeping her case a priority so that her attacker may be brought to justice as soon as possible.

Woman arrested after fake sex assault report From Staff Reports A 21-year-old Burgaw was arrested for making a false report to police.

T h e Pe n d e r C o u n t y Sheriff ’s Office arrested Savannah Nikole Lewis for one misdemeanor count of filing a false police report regarding her allegations of being sexually assaulted at the Rocky Point Wendy’s restaurant on March 20, 2019.

Lewis called Pender County 911 Mar. 20 and reported Robert Leviticus McKoy sexually assaulted her while she was in the women’s restroom. She repeated these allegations to responding deputies and a detective. A warrant charging McKoy with one count of misdemeanor sexual battery and assault on a female was obtained based

Robert Leviticus McKoy turned himself in Mar. 22, and was able to provide evidence to show Lewis provided false and misleading information to detectives about the sexual assault.

Charges against McKoy will be dismissed.

Lewis was arrested Mar. 23, and was released after posting a secured bond in the amount of $750.00.

Former Commissioner Jimmy Tate begins Mt. Calvary University

A new Christian-based university is coming to the area. Former Pender County Commissioner Dr. Jimmy Tate has announced the opening of Mt. Calvary University (MCU). MCU is an emerging regional university that will offer certificate, diploma and degree programs to adult learners with diverse life experiences.

Classes are set to begin in May and will be held in New Hanover, Pender and Duplin counties; providing both an academically rigorous and a Christianfocused education.

The Tree City, USA program has been making cities and towns greener across America since 1976.

The nationwide movement provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees. More than 3,400 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. According to their website, the Tree City USA status is achieved by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating

The dogwood was chosen as the tree to be planted on campus. The principal wanted something that would be kind of tall and would be a symbol for the school and it’s also the state flower. The three types given out to the students were oak (Northern red), tulip trees and red maple,� explained Staradumsky.

Staradumsky said that it was a great opportunity to get involved in the community. “It’s so great to be able to provide trees to the community, especially where trees have been taken out by the storm. Hopefully the students will be able to take the tree saplings and plant them where they need to be.

It will be a good symbol for them in the years to come,� said Staradumsky.

We are giving them the soft skills and the hard skills that they need instead of just giving them the academic part of it. We believe in having a well-rounded student,� said Tate.

Welcome to my world

Normal Misery may love company, but it also brings all the neurotics to the yard – myself included. I perch perilously on the fence dividing normal folks and the slightly unstable.

Publicly, we present as regular human beings, pushing through the workday, wearing clothes that match (though sometimes inside out).

We may have a dog or two as further proof that living things can be maintained under our care. Most days, we even brush our hair. Occasionally, sometimes, a weird wind blows and forces the question, am I actually normal?

Therapists claim that normal doesn’t exist – a disappointing little morsel as I’ve been toiling my entire life to achieve this designation. If there’s no definitive normal, could there possibly be some sort of gold standard-an embodiment that the target’s been hit somewhere along the spectrum? I want to rest one day in the comfort of knowing that the hard work is done.

A trophy or large wall plaque would be a bonus for the visual part of me and for my naysayers.

As a child, this was a no-brainer for me. Shows from the 1970s served as my touchstone, providing soothing examples of routine, structure and happy endings. Samantha Stevens, the cute and well-coiffed witch trying desperately to fit in with the mortals on Bewitched, represented what my life would hopefully become as a grownup (minus the witchcraft and the mean Darren). Samantha’s family w as greeted with a breakfast of eggs, toast, coffee, orange juice and fruit every morning and, after handing the hubby his briefcase and sending him off to work with a kiss, she commenced vacuuming and dusting her avocado green living room in her cute midcentury modern split-level rancher.

After sliding on a conservative, fashionable dress, Samantha slipped on her white gloves and drove to town for some afternoon shopping. Samantha’s hair was always perfect and, while life occasionally threw a curve ball, her day always ended on a happy note.

The post war era of the 50s and 60s highlighted shows steeped in routine, celebrating a consistency that was comforting. My fellow feminists are likely groaning and, honestly, I know that this ideal is far removed from the reality of the time.

Yet, that didn’t stop the stuffing of my cats into baby doll dresses as I tottered around the house in my mom’s high heels.

Dissent, manners, and the Good Samaritan Had she been any more grateful for the simple little thing I did, the lady would have embarrassed me.

I promised not to use her name, so I won’t; she had a problem and didn’t know where to turn. It took me but a moment to find the telephone number and name she needed, and I asked her to call me back if that didn’t work out, so I could see what else I could do to possibly help.

A day or so before, the young man in the store stopped what he was doing when he noticed me struggling to balance a bag of critter feed whilst favoring my gimpy leg.

He was dashing over to help me load up when I finally got the bag on my cart.

“You sure you’re okay?” he asked. I thanked him and assured him I was.

A short time later, I ran into another friend whose family has had more than its share of medical problems of late.

I asked how they were,

And yet a few days before that, I had the chance to pray with a lady who was checking on her daughter’s latest tragic misadventure. The poor misguided woman recognized me and came over to introduce herself.

We ended up praying in the parking lot.

I do not relate these things to boast, by any means; it’s just reassuring, when there is so much meanness in the

world, to see and do something nice for someone, with no expectation of any repayment.

I dislike cutesy cliches like “paying it forward,” a term I think was coined primarily to draw attention to one self via social media. We used to call that being a decent, wellmannered human being.

When someone is hurting, we need to be willing to help fix that hurt, no matter how little it may be.

Meals on Wheels is the largest program that most people are familiar with, but many communities offer senior meal delivery programs sponsored by other organizations that go by different names.

To find services available in your dad’s area, visit MealsOnWheelsAmerica.org, which offers a comprehensive directory on their website, or call the area aging agency near your dad.

Most of these programs typically charge a small fee (usually between $2 and $6) or request a donation, while some may be free to low-income seniors.

Online Meal Delivery Another option that’s a bit more expensive is to purchase your dad’s meals online and have them delivered to his home. There are a number of companies that of fer this type of service like Magic Kitchen (magickitchen.com), Home Bistro (homebistro.com), Personal Chef To Go (personalcheftogo.com), Good Measure Meals (goodmeasuremeals.com), and many others.

These companies offer a wide variety of tasty meal choices, and will usually post the nutrition information for their meals right on their website. Grocery Stores and Restaurants Depending on where

your dad lives, he may also be able to get home delivered meals from local grocery stores or restaurants. Some grocery stores offer a selection of pre-cooked meals and foods, including roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and fresh soups and salads. Contact the grocery stores in your dad’s area to inquire about this option. Or check with some of his favorite restaurants to see if they offer home delivery.

Personal Chefs Another option for non-cooking seniors with a bigger budget is to hire a personal chef from time to time. A personal chef can provide your dad with a do-it-all service that will help plan his meals, do the g rocery shopping and prepare him several weeks worth (or more) of tasty meals in his home, which he can freeze and eat whenever he wants. Or, they can prepare it in their own kitchen and deliver it.

Chef ’s fees range between $200 and $300 plus groceries. He may be able to save money by sharing meals with you or another family member, or a friend or neighbor.

Once again I rejoice to find the exquisite beauty of tiny spring wildflowers emerging from their winter rest.

It starts with the most confusingly named yellow jessamine, also called the Carolina jasmine, the State Flower of South Carolina, not to be confused with star jasmine, also called star jessamine. Often found on the ground, the yellow flowers have been shaken free of the vine growing high overhead in the tree tops. Lower down, it is the beautiful yellow flower cascading over fences.

For me it triggers a special feeling, my early retirement (or else was only implied). I had gotten the letter of agreement the day before, and out on my last sales call. I was riding along with another marketing rep and I was letting everything sink in, trying to make meaning of it all and the morning was memorable; it was this time of the year, and the new life of a fresh start to the new year made a profound impression, it was the start of a new year, a new life, for me, and the jessamine stuck in my memory of the time of the year.

Today, I found the first vinca – a flat purplish blue flower also called periwinkle. The side yard is full of it, in the shade mostly, and growing low down as a ground cover.

Even further down, often under lawnmower height, are the bright yellow dots of dandelion.

Dandelion, like clover, when mowed, learns just how high the lawnmower blade was, and learns to keep its head down.

Every spring seems the same, eagerly anticipated until the pines and oaks join the grass pollen to coat outdoor surfaces with a thick layer of yellow green pollen.

On a calm day, an errant wind gust can shake a tree canopy and release a very visible cloud. I was at a golf tournament once, on a hot, dry and calm day, with the gallery taking shade from the pines along one hole, when a press helicopter flew over, low enough for a good picture, but the rotor wash shook all the pollen loose

and covered the crowd. It was a lot of pollen, more like yellow fog.

Nonetheless, it fills my heart with joy knowing the march of spring is to follow, with the season progression of the wildflowers I await over in Holly Shelter: first is tiny little iris verna, the dwarf iris, just as magnificent in appearance as its larger cousins, but only a couple of inches tall. Then the pither plants will send up bright green trumpet shaped leaves, hooded over and containing water inside. Unwary bugs are lured inside, slip and slide down and impeded from escape by downward pointing hairs, to join the soup of dissolving insects.

The soil in Holly Shelter is nutrient deficient (so the scholarly articles say) and is composed mainly of sand, and in the wet areas, layered with sphagnum. To obtain vital nutrients, many plants have developed systems and mechanisms to absorb nutrients from other organisms, like small insects.

Sundews have sticky drops of liquid on the tips of its hairy leaves. An insect comes into contact gets stuck, dissolves and absorbed. Butterworts have wide sticky leaves that do the same.

Venus’ flytraps are unique. Flat, spoonshaped leaves are rimmed with interlocking stiff “teeth” and clamp shut when the trigger hairs on the leaf surface are stimulated. A fly or other small insect will bump a hair and the leaf closes around it almost instantaneously. Sometimes the interior of the open leaf is scarlet, bright red, sometimes only slightly red, other times mostly green.

I suspect it has something to do with the amount of nutrients the plant has absorbed.

Vrnus’ flytraps are a protected species, and poaching one from public property is a felony in NC. There was a recent arrest in Brunswick County for poaching and the man is in jail under $750,000 bail. When arrested he had more than 200 of the plants. Taking from private property with owners’ permission is OK. In a similar way, another spoon-shaped leaf had developed “hairs”, the sundew, and it comes in a couple of varietes; in one the shape is prostrate, lying flat on the soil, and the other, more erect, the plant like a dome with leaves upward and Continued on page 8A

Brother Kincy reminded us that while we likely do not have the ability to physically heal folks, we certainly can assuage the hurt.

Kincy pointed out that those from whom society should have expected the best gave only their worst, yet one who was despised gave up his own ride, cared for the wounded traveler, and made arrangements for him to be housed and fed while he recovered. Basically, the Samaritan practiced healing.

It embarrasses me to think of the number of times someone has done something nice for me, just to be nice. Due to the nature of my business, I have to be careful about the motivations of some of those folks, but those kind acts that smell of political fish are easily handled with a firm but polite “No, but thank you” if someone purchasing my lunch has a political motivation in mind.

It really doesn’t take that much effort to be nice. I was in a familyowned restaurant once on a Sunday when the crowds overwhelmed the mother, father, son and daughterin-law who made up the entire staff. It warmed my heart when several diners who obviously knew the struggling restaurateurs began busing tables, taking orders, refilling drinks and washing dishes.

The effort doesn’t have to be something so dramatic; simply holding a door for someone can be all that’s needed to make better a lousy day.

Of course, the little part of me that became an adult has been forced to shift the sails, but the ideal hasn’t changed.

Maybe this is the crux of my issues-an unattainable ideal forever etched in my psyche.

Now, the only satisfaction I can muster is reveling in the notion that there are many others farther from normal than I am. Misery should elicit pity, but shamefully, I’ll admit that after watching an episode of Hoarders, my self-esteem jumps 20

promotion of Raleigh as an arts scene and tourist destination and recognition on many “best of ” lists. Why is she stepping down?

It’s not because of age, health, scandal, or the traditional mantra of “spending more time with my family.” She’s just fed up. McFarlane is tired of a political climate that has gotten more partisan, more divisive and more hate-filled since she entered politics in 2007. “We used to fight together for the things we cared about,” McFarlane said. “Now it just seems like we fight with each other.”

I can hear the chorus responding, “That’s what she asked for when she ran for public office,” “It comes with the territory,”

or even, “She deserves it.” Really?

I won’t for one-minute claim that Nancy McFarlane has been right in every instance on every issue, however she’s been a pretty darn good mayor and has represented our city well. But nobody deserves to be treated uncivilly or disrespectfully, no matter how much we disagree with them.

People complain that not enough “good people” run for public office anymore. Is there any wonder why? Would you subject yourself to this kind of ugliness? God help whomever takes her place.

Mayor Nancy says we need a reset. Indeed. How low do we have to sink before there is a turnaround? How much name calling, partisan politics

where nerve endings seem constantly exposed to arcing electric wires, and some people are eager to move even closer to the high voltage. Manners for many have gone by the wayside. Intense but civil dialog has given way to screamed accusations, name-calling of the most vile sort, and a willingness to fight that would make the nastiest honeybadger take pause.

Tempting as it is to respond in kind, I sometimes have to take a breath and think of the example set by my father.

The Old Man had several friendly, sometimes almost familial letters from politicians who were (rightfully) excoriated in his editorials. One or two of them were frequent correspondents, and despite the polar opposites of their positions, Papa and those foibles were something akin to friends.

After his death, some of the most surprising visitors to his funeral and Mother’s home were the organizers of a local labor union. Despite knowing the Old Man’s stance as a stalwart defender of right to work, they had developed a relationship during the months Papa covered their meetings. He never minced words with them, but he never attacked them personally, either.

I have noticed that tendency in much of thatrapidly-disappearing generation; folks that you’d think would pull a knife on an opponent at the polls would also help that opponent change a flat tire on a rainy road in the middle of the night.

Nowadays, I have to wonder but that they’d instead try to hit each other with their cars.

It bugs me that folks are willing to fight to the death over little things, when there are much larger problems to be faced.

Like the priest who didn’t

want to have to take the time to wash the traveler’s blood from his hands, or the deacon whose business was more important to him than the life of a stranger, we lose sight of the larger picture.

We need more Samaritans in this world; I don’t mean folks who constantly go out of their way to help others, but people who are willing to give just a little bit, or at least don’t want to throw gasoline on a smoldering fire just to see it burn.

Our county, region, state and country have some serious problems, as does our world, but until we can help the stranger in the ditch, we by cracky have no business trying to fix the world. Biting and fighting like a bag full of angry cats accomplishes nothing – but that hand of peace has to come from both sides.

We live in an unmannerly age, where all-consuming anger and hatred for a dissenter, rather than strong disagreement with a dissenting opinion.

I would venture that were Christ telling that same parable today, at least one of the passersby would have kicked the wounded traveler as he lay in the ditch, or maybe thrown a rock at him and said it was his own fault for getting robbed.

As he does so well, Kincy pointed out an oft-forgotten point in the parable of the Samaritan, namely the role of the innkeeper.

When the Samaritan had to be on his way, he not only paid the bill for the wounded traveler, but paid for more in advance.

The Samaritan promised that, if the traveler required more care, the innkeeper would get what was coming to him.

One has to wonder sometimes, what the payment will be for some people.

Do I have dead cats in my freezer? No. Is there a pile of rat poopoo six feet high to the left of my kitchen table? Nope. Is my bathroom/litterbox located in the middle of my bedroom? Definitely not.

As for expired food, that depends on the day, but we haven’t suffered any bouts of food poisoning lately.

Aside from the random family of possums, rescued moles, baby birds, snake eggs (which were supposed to be birds) accidentally hatched in my car and meandering ducks that peck feverishly at the front door demanding food, I have yet to hoard an unrealistic stash of animals. Even the Kardashians stir within me a bit of self-satisfaction.

Maybe I should celebrate the fact that my home is not littered with the entrails of deceased rodents or former pets.

Success and normalcy are

relative, after all.

So, if happiness is the gold standard, then I’ve made it.

or nasty behavior will we tolerate before we cry “ENOUGH?” We get it. Politics can be and often is a contact sport, but nobody appears to have filters anymore, especially on social media sites. People feel at liberty to say anything that pops in their heads, to release for all the anger, resentment and ugliness they have inside. And it would be one thing if it were just public officials about whom they vented.

My wife and I were in a sandwich shop the other day. The customer’s sandwich order was delivered wrong and this woman proceeded to berate and spew anger at the person behind the counter. We were sitting many feet away and could hear her raging. The offer to

replace her order wasn’t sufficient. This person just wanted to rant; anyone in her path was going to be the subject of her wrath. As we were leaving, we commented to the owner that we had heard the episode and wondered if this was common.

The owner told us it was harder and harder to be in business serving the public.

We understand that this is a stressful world, that it moves at an everfaster pace and all the technology that was supposed to make our lives easier and better has often had the opposite effect.

But we also remember reading that during the Great Depression, desperate times when many had little to eat and no place to stay the night, that we

were a more genteel and caring people. Even in our worst times we exhibited brotherly love and helped others as we could.

Would that we could stop fighting with and started once more to treat others with the respect they deserve, the same respect we want for ourselves.

Pender County Democrats selected new officers at the party’s annual convention, held Mar. 23 at the historic Train Depot in Burgaw. Carol Johnson, retired Pender County public school teacher, was elected as the new Pender County Democratic Party Chairperson. Ms. Johnson resides in Hampstead. She succeeds retiring chair, Debbi Fintak, who will continue to serve as third vice-chairperson. Stephen Strnisha and Tony Hooper were elected as the new first and second vice-chairs. Newly elected State Executive Committee members are Samantha Nelson and Adrian Domenech. Ann Fondren returns as Secretary and Chris Medlin will continue to serve as Treasurer. Convention participants also elected 34 delegates to represent Pender County at the District 7 Convention April 27 in Wallace. Upcoming events discussed included the County Dinner May 11 and the State Unity Dinner in Raleigh June 8. The Honorable Judge James Faison was the convention’s guest speaker. Basketball camp scholarship deadline is Mar. 31

By Taylor Maready Special to the Post & Voice And just in case you have forgotten who ‘we’ are since our last article, we are Ecological Marine Adventures or EMA. EMA is a Marine Science Center on Topsail Island that specializes in all things conservation education, but mostly all things fun and adventurous!

We headed down south for the winter after Hurricane Florence and we could not be more excited to be back on the island and back on the education page! We are working hard in our new building and cannot wait to kick off the season with our full-day Spring Break Camp- super exciting stuff coming up.

Anyway, let us jump in! Our last 4.5 months were spent on the Pacific Coast on Nicaragua, Central America. We spent our days researching, collecting data, snorkeling, educating and living immersed in wildlife and nature. It was a phenomenal experience.

We were able to spread conservation education and update protocol with the local Nicaraguan community concerning marine life, specifically with a project called PROJECT: TORTUGA, where we helped implement sea turtle education, conservation and data collection. We were also able to open a small Marine Science Center in the town of Tola, Nicaragua for locals and tourists to visit and participate in data collection themselves.

In addition, we had the opportunity to observe the behavior of many tropical fish, but especially the Damsel family, visit Lake Nicaragua, which is home to Bull Sharks, and to explore so many tide pools, which was a huge excitement since we do not have real tide pools on the island. (I use ‘real’ lightly, our campers would not approve of me calling our common tide puddles on topsail island anything less than a tide pool. :)) We were able to hand feed howler monkeys, stand within feet of endangered spider monkeys, observe two different species of anteaters from our house every night, help an injured porcupine and so much more. We are very excited to share our data and experiences with classes and camps this year!

All of these species mentioned have one thing in common: They live outside in the wild and we, humans, share their habitat.

Now, you might be thinking “Well, duh!

That is not worthy of the education page of the paper.” But, hear me out!

Living in paradise with beautiful views was captivating to the eyes. It was absolutely beautiful, but of all of the wonderful specimen and species that we were able to find on the beaches, there was one find that was by far the most abundant: Trash. And not just any trash, but plastics.

Did you know that humans purchase about 1,000,000 plastic bottles per minute and only about 23% of those are recycled?

500 billion disposable cups are dumped each year and 4 trillion plastic bags are used yearly. Yep, you read that right. 4 TRILLION. T-R-I-L-L-I-O-N. Did you know that plastic can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill?

And when plastics end up in the ocean, it gets even worse. The UV rays, in additional

to the commotion of the ocean, actually break the plastic down into smaller pieces, called microplastics, which can easily be mistaken for food to marine life.

Majority of the plastics in the ocean are less than 1 cm in size and cannot be seen to the naked eye. To add some visual to this statistic, only about 30 percent of the plastic that enters into the ocean floats.

We cannot usually see the 70% which is below the surface. (But our ocean friends certainly can!)

Now, keep those statistics in mind and let ‘s fast forward to last week when Indy, our three-year-old son, visited the beach here in Surf City for the first time since October. He ran out on the beach with excitement and picked up a dropped crab claw. He, literally, found it in less than 30 seconds. We found shark’s teeth, sea glass and endless amounts of sea shells that day.

We found some trash, but we were more than excited to leave the beach with less than a handful.

My reason for sharing this is simple.

With all of the amazing species that we were and are able to work with on the beach, we owe it to them to make good ocean-friendly decisions.

So, I challenge you to make a small change today. Skip the straw, grab a reusable grocery bag, trade the ziplocks for reusable options, grab some beeswax wrap in place of plastic food wrap, pick out a reusable water bottle to carry with youwhatever you choose, I promise that your example will make a huge difference to the world, even your own island. It could be the difference in finding a crab claw and sea glass rather than old bottles and broken plastic sporks.

Whether you are near the ocean or miles away, you can make a difference. Rainwater heads downhill to creeks, which lead to streams, rivers and the ocean.

As Walt Disney once said “The wonders of nature are endless..” and we couldn’t agree more. Together, we can make a wave of change for years to come.

The deadline is quickly approaching for rising sixth, seventh and eighth graders to apply for a scholarship from Four County EMC to attend basketball camp this summer.

Each year, Four County EMC awards two Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarships: one for a young man to attend the Roy Williams Basketball Camp at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and one for a young woman to attend the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp at N.C. State University in Raleigh. Applications must be postmarked by Sunday, March 31.

Luke 9: 1-2, 6 There is a turning here, a turning and a focus in Jesus’ ministry. It is not a new focus for it is what Jesus came to do for us in the first place, but now Jesus turns his face, his hands, his heart completely to the task. Jesus turns his face towards Jerusalem.

During his ministry Jesus has collected about as many opponents as friends. Now he set his

feet on the road to Jerusalem which is the center of power of the opposition.

Jesus knows what’s at stake; he is clear about what will happen there.

Now he faces the ultimate challenge and goes to fulfill his calling.

As Jesus makes this decision he has advice for would be followers. He reveals that faith is a matter of sacrifice and focus.

At times it requires our complete attention and our greatest commitment.

It does not always receive accolades, but even in the midst of rejection, God’s love prevails. We respond with love and forgiveness not revenge As they walk along followers declare themselves and in each case Jesus offers some declarations of the Christian way: Foxes have hole and birds have their nest

but the son of man has no place to lay his head.

Which is a way of saying that Christian faith is not an on again off again project. It is 24/7 undertaking, requiring sacrifice, focus and resolve. The decision to embrace Jesus and His way is an ultimate life changing decision.

To another would be follower Jesus says, “Let the dead bury the dead.� That is, let those who are dead to what we are doing take care of the dead in this world. At times we cannot let worldly concerns distract us from our call to serve.

To one who declares allegiance but must say farewell to his family, Jesus says, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of heaven.

In the same way, we

cannot live always with one foot in this world and another in the Kingdom of God. At times we make the choice to give Jesus and His ministry our full attention. At times we press on with Jesus in the service of God. Faith is a matter of commitment, a matter of focus and sacrifice. God calls us beyond the ordinary and every day to be servants

for His kingdom. God calls us from our self-focus into a larger world filled with God’s Spirit and purpose.

It was Dietrich Bonhoeffer who said this about discipleship: “When Christ calls a person, He bids that one to come and die.�

Not necessarily die physically, but to die to self so that he might, she might live for God. It is something to think about

as we journey along our way, as we walk in the footsteps of Christ, as we seek to follow God’s way in the world instead of our own.

Jesus calls us right here and right now, today and every day to press on in the service of God’s kingdom.

Jesus bids us to answer the call and fulfill our task in the service of God and of His kingdom.

Volunteers needed to transport cancer patients to treatment The Pender Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has developed a new partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS) to provide no cost transportation for Pender County cancer patients to treatment centers in New Hanover County.

Volunteer drivers will donate their time and vehicle to transport cancer patients to and from their cancer treatment centers in New Hanover County.

Drivers of any age will be considered and training will be provided. Background and DMV checks

are required.

Most rides will occur Monday-Friday.

Experience from other counties indicates that drivers might be called on once or twice a month.

Franklin Dean Brown Sr BURGAW -- Franklin Dean Brown, Sr., 84, of Burgaw passed peacefully from his earthly life Friday, Mar. 22, 2019 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center, He was born Feb. 11, 1935 in Marion County, S.C., the son of the late Neal and Ziphia Johnson Brown.

Dean was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Catherine Rogers Brown; and siblings, Inez Gasque, Laura Lyons, and Neal Hugh Brown.

Dean is survived by his sons, Franklin “Frankie” Dean Brown, Jr. and wife Kim, and Kirk Ro g ers Brown; grandchildren, Capt.

Franklin “Tripp” Brown, USAF and wife Nicole and Ashley Brown; great grandchildren, Gavin and Madison Brown; brother, Robert E. Brown; many extended family and friends.

He was a committed Christian and member of Burgaw Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and in many other capacities. Dean served in the National Guard of South Carolina and as a reservist of the Army of the United States. After working many years Dean retired from PYA-Monarch now US Foods.

Dean was a loving and generous husband, father, granddaddy, great granddaddy, brother and friend.

His quiet faith and thankfulness for blessings clearly spoke to his family and friends. Dean will be remembered as a kind man who loved God and his fellowman.

The family received friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Mar. 26, 2019 at QuinnMcGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw. At other times the family will be at the home of Frankie and Kim Brown.

She was born June 25, 1922 in Putnam County, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Henry H. and Ava Bailey Lucas. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, James Monroe Dale, who died while serving in

the military during WW II. She later married Ernest C. Gott who died in 2009.

Edith is survived by her children, Gary Dale (Peggy), Larry Gott (Sandra), Deborah Ward (Joe), David Gott, Daniel Gott (Debbie); 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; five great, great grandchildren; many extended family and friends, all who loved Edith.

A graveside funeral service was held at 11 a.m.

Mary Bernice Pridgen DeVane Moore CURRIE -- Mary Bernice Pridgen DeVane Moore, 90, of Currie passed gently from her earthly life Tuesday, Mar. 19, 2019 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 15, 1928, one of 12 children born to Archie Roger and Mary Katherine Pridgen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hybert DeVane and husband, Oliver Moore; and siblings, Ann Guyton, Faye Woodcock, Archie, Paul, Jerry, and Donald Pridgen.

marigold and castor beans, all of unknown vintage, and put them in planters outside. So far, the lettuce is up and seems to be doing well. Several years ago I started an avocado seed and it did really well. I brought it in for several years until it got too tall for an inside room near a window to winter over. I put it in the garage for a while, and then had to tilt its planter over to one side as it got even taller. Alas, it was pretty cold the winter

before and it got too cold, and died. I cut it off at the base, unpotted the root mass and put it on the compost pile out back. Then, one war m mid-summer day, noticed it had put out new growth, so I put it back in the pot, and it’s doing fine once again, almost six feet tall with several inches of new growth starting out for this year.

The squirrels found the peas and now I have little holes in the pot where the seeds once were.

He was born May 11, 1984 in New Hanover County son of William Howard Simmons II and Pamela H. Lee. He is survived by his father, William H. Simmons II and wife Gail of Scotts Hill; mother Pamela H. Lee and husband Earl of Hampstead; twin brother, Gerald Lee Simmons and wife Jessica and nephew Casen Simmons; grandparents, Gerald and Jeanette Henderson, and Dottie Lee; Aunts and Uncles, Glenda Gales, Dean Henderson, Henry and Pamela Smith and families, and Phyllis King and families; Ashley Swanson, Katie Moore; and special friend, Stacey Walsh and children.

She was born Dec. 12, 1950 in Durham, the daughter of the late Nathaniel Edmund and Julia Hosier Jones. Also lovingly remembered is her sister, Courtney Aman who preceded Julianne in death.

Julianne is survived by her husband of 39 years, Stanley Woodcock; brother, Dylan Jones; sisters, Lenore Pfutznek and Edie Phipps and her husband, William; many nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; numerous extended family and friends, all who loved Julianne.

Lady Pirates pound Hoggard, fall on the road to West Brunswick

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer Winning softball games in the Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference is never an easy task, but when you go on the road against the defending conference champion and commit six physical errors along with one glaring mental mistake, it borders on the impossible.

Sydney Hartgrove had two hits and knocked in a run, and Maggie Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI but that was not enough to overcome four unearned runs along with a two-run home run as West Brunswick defeated Topsail 9-2 in Shallotte.

Those nine runs were more than enough for 2018 Conference Player-of-the-

Year Morgan Beeler, who limited Topsail to five hits (two walks) while striking out six.

“They got three runs in the first inning and the two-run home run, then the wheels fell off,” Topsail Coach Eric Phillips said. “I told the girls, sooner or later in any given game something is going to go wrong, but it’s how you react from there. Now it comes down to how you recover, and that’s what we’re going to work on these next couple of days. One bad game doesn’t define a season.”

The Lady Trojans (5-1, 5-0) started off well offensively, and made some fantastic plays defensively.

A two-out blooper single to right in the bottom of the first was followed by a

walk, another flair to center that fell just in front of the charging Nee Nee Jordan that scored one run, and a double that plated two more for a 3-0 West Brunswick lead Topsail got one run back in the third on a walk to Jordan and a double by Smith, but a two-run home run to dead center upped the Lady Trojan advantage to 5-1. That’s when those wheels came off. An error started the West Brunswick sixth, followed by a single. A single scored two more runs before another error let the inning continue and a sacrifice fly sent another run home.

Patriot nine earns two conference wins

One of the hardest tasks in sports is to hit a baseball. At the beginning of the year that difficulty was magnified at Pender High school.

However, first year Head Coach Scott Liptrapp never wavered. He continued to preach mechanics and positive reinforcements in everything they did. His approach seems to be working. The Pender Patriot hard ballers won twice last week including beating the 2A Richlands

Wildcats 8-5.

“I am very proud of what these young men are doing together, “said Liptrapp. “We have starters from every grade, nine through 12 and with good senior leadership this team is improving and will fight you like dogs for seven innings. Their development over the last several months has been a true joy to be a part of.”

They had just beat a very good North Brunswick team early in the week and was looking to ex-

tend their lead on the rest of the Coastal 8 Conference. However, the Onslow County Wildcats had other ideas. Pender struggled in the first frame, giving up six runs on five errors and two hits and failed to right the ship, falling 6-2.

Titans slam Lejeune

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Heide Trask Titan baseball team is still treading water. After two conference games last week along with a nonconference affair with South Brunswick, the team is sitting at 2-2 in the Coastal 8 Conference.

The week started with a home affair with Richlands. The Wildcats came into the game with a 1-1 conference record. Trask started what has become their best player in Kolby

Lanier on the mound. Lanier went the distance but did not have the run support in falling 5-2.

Jacob Johnson led the Titans with one hit and a run batted in. The Titans had five hits for the game.

Next up was a non-conference game with South Brunswick. The game was rolled over to Thursday because of the wet field conditions.

South Brunswick showed up and showed off, beating the Titans 8-4.

Topsail freshman (No. 6 singles) Bobby Toler won the only singles’ match for the Pirates, winning 6-3, 6-2, while sophomores Connor Hill and Brayden Wells teamed up to win in 9-7 at No. 3 doubles.

Thursday Topsail was back in conference play where they dropped a 7-2 decision at Laney. Alex Hornthal secured the Pirates’ lone singles win, defeating Landon Batts, 7-6, 6-2. Hill and Wells stayed on the positive side in doubles, taking down Hoggard’s Aidan Sullivan and Will Adams, 8-6.

Topsail was at Ashley Monday. The Pirates return home Thursday to face West Brunswick. s4RACK &IELD Thursday the Pirate teams played host to Laney, New Hanover, and South Brunswick with the Lady Pirates finishing first (129 points) ahead of Laney (70), New Hanover (20), and South Brunswick (12), and the boys coming in second (63) behind Laney (104), and ahead of New Hanover (53) and South Brunswick (33).

Madison Lofton, Elizabeth Cooper, and Payton Little were double winners for the Lady Pirates. Little won the shot put (34-101/2) and the discus, Cooper won the 100-meter hurdles (17.4) and the 300-meter hurdles (53.2), and the incomparable speedster Lofton won the 100 (12.5) and the 200 (25.4).

Also securing firstplace finishes were Grace Hunter in the triple jump (31-4), and Abigail Hunt in the long jump (4-10). Emma Martin (18.1) and Chavia London (18.1) were second and third in the 100hurdles, Isabella Bufalini (5:31.4), Makayla Obremski (5:46.9), and Skyler Libretto (5:46.9) were second,, third, and fourth, respec-

The 4x800-meter relay team of Campbell, Hayden Rogerson, Jace Bean, and Cameron Barnes was first (9:31.6), the foursome of Noh Schiefelbein, Ward, Ian Webster, and Cameron Barras was second (44.9) in the 4x100 relay, and Henry Skeen, Clyde Cohen, Connor Wright, and Parrella came in third (3:51.0) in the 4x400 relay.

Lady Titans beat Lejeune, fall to Richlands

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Last week was a tale of two stories for the Heide Trask Lady Titan softball team. They played a very weak Lejeune team before hosting a very good Richlands squad. Both games went as expected with the Lady Titans demolishing the Lady Devil Pups 18-0 in five innings before losing to Richlands 15-3.

The Devil Pups came into the contest looking for their first win of the year while the Titans were trying to find their rhythm.

Freshman Hannah Mills toed the rubber and did an outstanding job. Lejeune failed to get a hit off of the right-hander as she pitched her first no-hitter of her high school career.

She sent six Lady Devil Pups back to the confines of the visitors dugout via

the strikeout.

Mills helped her cause at the plate, leading Trask with a 3-for-4 performance that included four runs batted in. Cassidy Laws had three hits for the Titans.

Richlands came rolling into Rocky Point earlier in the week looking to advance their record and keep pace with the other top teams in the conference. The Wildcats conference record was

1-1 and with an important matchup with Pender later in the week, the Cats hoped to run roughshod over the young Titans. That is what happened as the Onslow County team beat the Titans 15-3.

The Titans are now 2-7 on the year with a 1-3 conference mark. They played at Dixon on Tuesday and was home against Wallace Wednesday. They were at Croatan Friday.

Pirates end losing streak with win at Hoggard

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Topsail baseball team with a giveaway loss at West Brunswick accounting for a third-consecutive loss. But the conventional thinking has always been, “What have you done for me, lately,” and the Pirates entered the past weekend with the boost a win always brings.

Hayden Walsh knocked in one run and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second inning, and the Pirates tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Topsail ended the threegame losing streak with a 3-1 win over Hoggard in a Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference game.

“It was good to get a win,” Topsail Coach Nick Raynor said. “We took advantage of some of their mistakes and, first-and-

foremost, our pitching was amazing. Aidan Smith and pitched a great game, Hayden Walsh came in and gave up an unearned run, that’s been our bugaboo a little bit, and Davis Hartman came in and slammed the door.

‘The kids have been working so hard and it’s good to validate that hard work with a win. Wins and loses is the final stat that matters but, in reality, we’ve had some positives that the kids are getting better, playing together, and picking each other up, so there are some positives in there.: The Pirates (2-5, 1-3) used

three pitchers to stymie the Vikings (0-7, 0-4) with starter, and winner, Aidan Smith giving up three hits, no runs, and three walks with three strikeouts over four innings, Walsh tossing two solid innings of one hit, one strikeout, one run (unearned), and Davis Hartman earning the save with one inning where he walked two Vikings.

Topsail got all the runs the trio of hurlers with one out in the top of the third inning. Chuck Major was hit by a pitch and Shane Nolan doubled to put runners on second and third. Walsh singled to left to send Major and Nolan racing home.

Hoggard cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nick Hargrove reached base on a two-out error and scored on a single to rightfield by Zach Zabriskie.

The game stayed there

until the top of the seventh when Walsh (2-for4, RBI, R/S) stroked a single to lead off the inning.

In My Opinion I have had many conversations with high school coaches over the 20 years or so of working in the newspaper business. I have had the pleasure of covering conference tournaments, conference championships, state championships and many other sporting events that most people would love to attend.

Through it all I have found that there are a couple of things that distinguish the winning programs from all of the other programs.

Discipline is one of the most underrated properties of a winning program. A disciplined team can overcome many things. They can overcome a lack of talent in some cases, although we all know that talent trumps all. In the game of football, a disciplined team with marginal talent will be competitive against a more talented team in most cases.

When I say disciplined, I mean knowing when to and how to and why you do things. Being disciplined means not making mistakes that hurt your team.

Leadership is another thing that helps separate the good from the great and the average from the above average. When I say leadership, I am not talking about the head coach or even the assistant. I am talking about a player or players on a team that are willing to step up and become a leader, someone that does not mind speaking up when things are going bad or when things are going great.

A good leader leads

by example. They show great work ethic on the field and in the classroom. They don’t have to be perfect, they just have to strive to be as good as they can be. You often hear about someone leading by example and I believe that every team should have a couple of those players.

I also believe that a team needs a vocal leader. There should be someone on the team that does not mind stepping on toes when needed. However, that same person should be able to praise a teammate as well, pick a teammate up when they are struggling. This player has to be respected.

Pender High has a very talented softball team. They have a ton of talent and should go far in the playoffs. They have a few leaders that lead by example. The one thing that I think the team lacks is that vocal leader. Someone needs to step up and become that player, the one I just described. The Trask Titans split conference tilts last week.

They lost 5-1 to Richlands on Tuesday. Senior Michelle Valentin scored the Titans only goal while Leanna Pfeiffer had eight

saves.

Two days later the Lady Titan kickers beat Lejeune behind three goals from sophomore standout Anisa Lewis. Aubrey Mintz had the other goal. Pfeiffer had the shutout in goal with five saves.

The Titans, (3-4/2-2) were at Dixon on Tuesday before hosting Wallace – Rose Hill on Wednesday.

They were at Croatan on Friday.

Maggie Smith was 3 for 4 with three runs batted in. Sydney Hartgrove was 3 for 3 in the Pirates win over North Johnston while Tyesha 7ILLIAMS was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer As a young high school baseball player coming up through the ranks, Ricky Dees took his lumps. He worked hard during practice and tried to make the most of his time on the field. This year he seems to have hit his stride. He is a starter for the Titans in the 2019 baseball season.

Mr. Dees can play multiple positions. He can work the field or lead the team from the pitching mound.

He has the size and strength to become a force at the Rocky Point school.

Coming into the last part of last week, Ricky was batting a very respectable .316.

He had three runs batted in with two doubles in the young season.

He has also given Coach Ronnie Pruitt some productive innings on the mound.

“We just lost focus, “said Reece. “Sometimes I think we are more worried about how we look when we’re making a play verse just making the play. We have put ourselves in a tough spot. We can’t afford to lose another conference game. We made 13 errors this week. We have to clean that up.”

There are five teams with 3-1 conference marks.

The Patriots, (7-2/3-1) will play two of them this week.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Topsail Lady Pirate varsity softball team is full of talented young ladies.

Most of the players on the team can play multiple positions and have the ability to make a play both in the field as well as at the plate.

Junior Lauren Strnad is one of those multi-faceted players.

Miss Strnad is listed as a utility player on the roster.

She can help the team at several different positions.

She gives Coach Eric Phillips many options.

Lauren is batting .350 for the season with six runs batted in. She also has an astounding .944 fielding percentage with just one error for the whole season.

The Pirates are in the hunt for the conference title and will go deep into the state playoffs.

With players like Lauren Strnad, it is a sure bet that the Pirates will have a successful season.

Weather keeps anglers on their toes

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Angling Expert North Carolina weather keeping anglers on their toes The winter weather is coming and going and the area anglers have become a little shell-shocked.

When the temperatures and rain let up and the anglers hit the water they are finding a few bream for the taking.

Remember to set the depth of your bait according to the temperature of the water you are fishing. Worms and crickets are doing the trick when the weather breaks.

The saltwater fishing should get cranked up soon. I can’t wait to start trolling off of the breakers in search of the Spanish. It is not that far away. A few reds have been caught around Topsail. Gulp shrimp will work here. The piers are reporting that a few puffer fish have been caught with a few sea mullet showing up. The Surf City pier is partially open for day fishing with repairs hoping to be finished by the end of the month.

The trout are laying around their usual holes for this time of month.

Remember to fish according to the water temps.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer When Pender Patriot baseball coach Scott Liptrapp took over the program at the beginning of the school year he knew he had some holes to fill.

The team lost several players to graduation and other foreseen reasons and needed to fill those spots.

One of the most glaring holes was at the catcher’s position. It did not take Coach Liptrapp long to find the man for the job. Senior Chris Olivas stepped up and took the position and has never looked back.

Mr. Olivas plays the position as if he has played the position his whole life. He leads by example. He gives 110 percent each and every time he puts the gear on.

The Patriot baseball team is in the midst of a tough Coastal 8 Conference slate. With Chris Olivas behind the plate the team will always have a chance.

This week’s fishing tip When I first started fishing, my father started me out on an old fashioned cane pole. There is nothing more fun that sitting on the bank of a pond or even the river with a cane pole watching your bobber dance as a bream nibbles at your cricket or worm. Let’s go over the basics of fishing with a cane pole as I learned them.

The first thing to do is find a pole that fits the person fishing with it. If your little girl or boy is just starting out, try and find one that is small enough for them to handle with ease.

Next up is to get the line attached to the end of the pole. Not too much line. Make sure your little one can handle the rig.

Set your bobber according to the depth of the water you are fishing in. I like the big ole red and white bobbers my self.

Finally, make sure you use a small hook as the bream is a small fish.

Don’t put too much bait on the hook, Just enough to get the fishes attention.

Taking your child or grandchild fishing will build memories that they will never forget, nor will you. That’s why I say, Take a kid fishing!
