Surf City plans Nov. 19 meeting on food trucks

From Staff Reports While the Nov. 7 meeting of the Surf City Town Council saw an interesting presentation from the Honor Foundation, a resident’s explanation on the construction of the new traffic circle, and some criticism of the town’s extremely early display of Christmas decorations, the bulk of the meeting was focused on an item not on the agenda – the controversial issue of food trucks operating in Surf City.

For many years Surf City officials have taken the position that roadside peddlers were forbidden

within the limits of Surf City. This was the case until the owners of the Salty Turtle challenged the interpretation of the town ordinance. The Salty Turtle is a new brewery in town whose owners want to operate a food truck on the business property. Joined now by the owners of the Swingbridge Cork & Brew who purchased an existing business, these two establishments seek to prevent the imposition of a peddler ban by the Surf City Town Council.

The N.C. Baptists on Mission have been hard at work to help Pender County residents affected by Florence.

The operation center at Riley’s Creek Baptist Church in Rocky Point is one of 18 across the state that the charitable organization has set up.

This center is serving all of Pender County except for Hwy 17 East and the Cross Creek community. Locations where they are currently working include Maple Hill, Whitestocking Road, the Black River area around Canetuck and in areas that border Bladen, Brunswick and Sampson Counties. “It’s a lot of devastation,� began Mike Moser, who heads up the Pender County operations for N.C. Baptists on Mission. “At the current time, we have a little more than 600 work orders. Out of those, 380 still to be done.�

Burgaw Christmas Home Tour Dec. 1

Battle of Moores Creek Bridge Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution lead by Jane Teachey, Regent and Jackie P. Davis, Vice Regent, coordinated this years Veterans Day Service in Burgaw held at the Depot. Lonnie Davenport, Retired Commander, Dudley Robbins American Legion Post 165 delivered a history of Veterans Day. Wreaths representing Daughters of the American Revolution, American Legion and Sons of the American Legion were respectfully layed at the base of the American flag.

Guest speaker LTC (retired) Carolyn Johnson Baker, a Burgaw native, gave tribute to the courageous men and women throughout history that served and sacrificed for freedom. Baker served as a nurse in the U.S. Army and an educator at Southeastern Community College in Whiteville after her military retirement. Burgaw Presbyterian Pastor Will Davis gave the invocation and the benediction. Members of the Pender Community Brass Band led by Gary Alsup, provided a program of music representing the five branches of the service.

O’Brien, who is Executive Field Director of a nonprofit, Veteran Owned, Veteran Grown, helps veterans and their families find new direction and purpose through agriculture. He recently called the Marine Corps and the Single Marine Program. They were worried because places that normally hosted a lot of the Marines for Thanksgiving had to cancel this year because of the storm.

“There are all these Marines that don’t have a place to go, so I called and said we’ll take them. I was asked how I’m going to cook for all these people. The same way we always have. It’s always been outside. It’s in our yard, so it shouldn’t affect anything really. There are so many in the local community that don’t even have a home right now, and they are all invited to our place. We’ll have the same good ole time we always did,” said O’Brien.

Providing for the active duty Marines is important to O’Brien. For many of them, it’s the first time that they’ve ever left home.

They’re fresh out of high school, fresh out of boot camp, and he wants their first time away from home to be a positive experience.

“I didn’t have that when I was them, when it was my first time away from home.

I also think it’s a great opportunity for the local folks to show these guys and girls how much they appreciate them. It’s also an opportunity just to have everybody come together and remember that no matter what’s going on, we always have each other’s backs. We’re stronger than any of that stuff,” said O’Brien.

For those who would like to help, O’Brien said that what he needs is pig cookers, turkeys, sides and desserts. The days leading up to Thanksgiving, he will also have tons of work going on. If people want to come the day before Thanksgiving to help with prepping, they are welcome to come. On Thanksgiving Day, volunteers can arrive as early as 9 a.m. and help throughout the day. Alternately, they are welcome to show up at noon when all the guests are coming.

“Everybody asks how they can volunteer, and I always have a hard time answering that because to me, you’re not really volunteering to work. People don’t understand that until they actually come be a part of it. What you are volunteering to do is come and be family. That’s all we ask is that everybody comes with an open heart and just forget all the other junk for the day and just be family with everybody,” said O’Brien.

“Thanksgiving is a great time for us and it’s going to be even more important this year. Hopefully, we can get everybody’s minds off of all this mess for a day; and get them focused on the fact that we’ve still got a lot to be thankful for. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and we’ll get there.”

Operation Thanksgiving Blessing will be held from noon until 4 p.m. at 7356 N.C. Hwy 53 East in Burgaw. Corporate support for this year’s event includes help from Sysco Foods and Jeff Gordon Chevrolet in Wilmington.

Pender Historical Society will feature its Christmas Home Tour of historic and beautifully decorated local buildings and homes.

Tickets may be purchased from merchants in downtown Burgaw and at the Pender County Museum.

The tour will take place Dec. 1 from 3-7 pm, and refreshments will be served at the museum.

In preparation for the event, the Burgaw Area Garden Club is decorating the museum. They have been putting up ribbons, greenery and decorations outside.

“For years and years, they have been helping us get the outside looking really pretty,” said Jeanette Jones, President of the Pender County Museum and Historical Society.

“They have bought us a Christmas tree to put inside the house. They’ve done a lot of replanting of shrubbery out front and azaleas, and whatever the yard needs. They have been so good to us over the years.”

This is the seventh year the Christmas Tour has been held. This year’s tour will feature nine homes, including older and newer ones, as well as the museum. The Library Annex is also on the tour. All of the homes are located in the town of Burgaw, and they each have a story behind them.

“We’ve got some new homes and we’ve got some really old homes, and we

have some that have been remodeled and changed. A lot of the homes are within a couple of blocks of each other. Four of the houses are on Bridgers, one on Wright, one on Wilmington, and one on Kilarney. The Library Annex is on Cowan St. right across from the library,” Jones explained.

Tour features include the home of Rochelle Whiteside, which was constructed in 1930. Three generations were raised in her home, and an addition was added in 1956.

B u r g aw M e t h o d i s t Church, organized in 1987 and bricked in 1929, can also be seen during the tour.

Completion of the church was hindered during the Great Depression due to lack of funds. At that time, the ladies in the church made homemade soup and held various fundraisers to raise funds for finish building it. The church still has the original bells and they still ring today.

The home of Bob and Donna Murphrey, known as the Dr. H.B.Thomas Home,can be seen by those attending. The house was built circa 1906, and the foundation was lifted in 2006. Robert and Susan Williams house was known as the D.L. Farrior House, and it was built in 1939. It is a colonial revival home.

The Library Annex, also known as the Henry Murphy home, was built before the 1900s. The Annex has a collection of historic photographs that will be on display.

On Island Time

Blown away I have been blown away by the acts of kindness and generosity I see in our communities and beyond every day, especially since hurricane Florence blew through. Beginning with the phone call from friends, insisting we evacuate indefinitely to their new home in Florida, to the simple words of encouragement, kindness, support, strength and faith I hear communicated everywhere I go, our community is clearly connected and strong in our collaborative recovery response.

Hurricane Florence came barreling towards our coast as a category four with winds in excess of 100 miles an hour.

Thankfully, she slowed down, but stayed for days, decimating our dunes, sending shingles and siding flying, rendering many of our neighbors homeless. This furious freak of nature not only changed our landscape, it changed our lives forever.

The massive destruction, distraction, devastation and displacement, causing millions of dollars in damages and multiple years to rebuild will not be soon forgotten.

Evidence is everywhere; trash and debris still piled by the street, siding hanging sideways, tarps tacked to rooftops and windows with boards still attached. Florence’s impact was intermittent, leaving some homes looking fine from the outside in spite of extreme internal damage.

We were very blessed having only lost a few shingles and trees. As a result, we are careful how and with whom we share our experience. Leaving the island last minute, we hit no traffic heading south nor upon return from our impromptu involuntary evacuation vacation. Living 9 days without cable tv turned out to be a blessing, shielding us from the constant coverage and blow-byblow banter of Florence’s wrath. We felt fortunate to fare so well, even with the timing of our return, just hours after the island reopened and electricity was restored.

We realize many others were not so fortunate, and continue to celebrate our collaborative community covenant that we are all in this together. Whether your home was damaged or not, and even if you don’t live on the island, our beloved beaches took a terrible beating which will continue to impact our ability to enjoy them ( in the manner we are accustomed to) for quite sometime.

Some beach accesses are closed, some are completely gone, while others stand naked, surrounded by flat ground where the ocean washes over the unprotected pavement at high tide.

Paintball and passing zones Every day, social media is full of pictures and videos of people passing school buses, usually with a semi-profane description of the driver. Not saying that anyone idiotic enough to pass a stopped school bus doesn’t deserve a good cussin’, but I have to wonder about the judgment of folks who should be busy driving, but are photographing and videoing people who are texting and driving. The irony is tasty, if not downright delicious.

I have a modest proposal that might help stop this dangerously stupid habit of passing stopped school buses. It would take advantage of the modern youth’s love for and skill with video games, as well as creating the public shaming deserved by anyone who endangers school kids.

My idea would also help law enforcement track down such scofflaws.

Equip school buses with turrets like those seen on military vehicles, but arm them with highcapacity, twin-barrel paintball guns. Children would earn the right to

Jefferson Weaver man the gun position by completing assignments on time, performing extra credit, etc. Of course the bus driver would need to have a master switch arming the paintball guns, but that wouldn’t be a big deal.

By allowing bus drivers to communicate instantly via handsfree radio (our bus drivers nearly a half-century ago used CBs ) they could coordinate with each other regarding things like road hazards, traffic jams – and drivers who pass stopped school buses.

the violator’s vehicle with hard-to-remove paintball pellets. A quick call by the bus driver or bus monitor to local law enforcement would then send an officer in the right direction – and locating the suspect vehicle would be remarkably easy with huge splotches of paints all over the hood and roof.

Imagine, if you will, a big yellow bus filling with children at the end of the day, with laughter and talk and the occasional greeting for Mrs. Baker, the bus driver. The doors close with a familiar hiss as Mrs. Baker checked the list by the camera that records every vehicle beside the bus.

“Quiet down, children,” she called over the PA system. “Janie Jones, Mrs. Daniels’ email says you’ve been especially good this week.”

The little girl giggled and blushed.

“I tried, Mrs. Baker.”

“Well, you got two gold stars, so you get to ride up top today.” The kids cheered, and Janie made her way to a ladder in the rear of the bus. She put Continued on page 4A

He should also wait at least three hours after eating before lying down or going to bed. s,OSE WEIGHT (AVING excess weight around the midsection puts pressure on the abdomen, pushing up the stomach and causing acid to back up into the esophagus. s1UIT SMOKING 3MOKing can increase stomach acid and weaken the valve that prevents acid from entering the esophagus. If your husband smokes, the National Cancer Institute offers a number of smoking cessation resources at SmokeFree.gov or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW. s3LEE P ELEVATED 4O help keep the acid down while sleeping, get your husband a wedge-shaped pillow to prop him up a few inches. If that’s not enough, try elevating the head of his bed six to eight inches by placing blocks under the bedposts or insert a wedge between his mattress and box spring.

Wedges are available at drugstores and medical supply stores. Sleeping on his left side may also help keep the acid down.

But be aware that long-term use of PPIs can increase your risk for osteoporosis and chronic kidney disease. s3URGERY )F THE MEDIcations don’t do the trick, there are also surgical procedures that can tighten or strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter so gastric fluids can’t wash back up into the esophagus.

Gentians: Plants with personality

Bill Messer Finally, and it’s been a long time coming, postFlorence life is returning to normal, and for those of us fortunate enough to have had only minimal damage to property, the debris cleanup is complete.

From time to time I can look across the front yard and imagine it looks more or less like it did before the storm, and the leaves, those left on the now scraggly looking trees, have taken on the colors of fall – the reds and yellows mixed in with green newly emerging leaves on the oaks, river birch and tulip poplar.

Not so just across Highway 17 in Hampstead.

The broad savannas are littered with fallen trees, pines broken half-way up, trees split, limbs broken.

The main road is clear where open, but washed out by the impoundment area, the duckpond.

The Holly Shelter Wildlife Management Area is open once again for the fall hunting seasons, and the deer hunt is underway six days a week. Sunday is a non-hunting day, and very popular with hikers and bikers, walkers and bird-watchers, geo-cachers, people walking their dogs, pushing all-terrain strollers, or just wandering about.

There’s another group, and they rejoice in the fall wildflowers, and that’s my particular pursuit, and the spring and summer wildflowers as well, and anything I can find in winter. In short, if you see an old guy wandering around, hunched over and closely examining the fields and roadsides, or driving along so slowly the speedometer needle never leaves the peg, that’s either me of another one like me – and there are many.

Yesterday, I was poking along, driving on the main road, Lodge Road, and slowly neared a car that had been well down the road when I first saw it, and noticed he was hugging the side of the road.

I followed at a distance for a while, then the other car slowed and pulled over

and stopped in a wide spot.

“Are you waiting for me to go around?” I asked as I pulled alongside.

“Yes,” the driver acknowledged.

“I thought nobody drove slower than me,” I laughed, and we chatted for a while.

He told me he was taking pictures of the asters.

“Have you seen the gentians?” I asked, “The purple-blue flowers? There’s some right in front, by the edge of the road.”

He saw them, and thanked me for pointing them out, and I continued on my way.

What had I been looking for?

Gentiana autumnalis, the autumn gentian, also called the pine barrens gentian, blooms in early autumn and lasts well into December. The flowers are stunningly mixed shades of blue and purple, the source of its own unique name, gentian violet, often used for medical treatments The active ingredient, hexamethylrosaniline, has been synthesized and is used for many different anti-fungal applications.

Gentian Violet 1% solution is widely available, and seen as a universal ‘cure all’ for any number of ailments.

Joseph Heller wrote about it in his novel, “Catch 22”, “All men reporting on sick call with temperatures below 102 had their gums and toes painted with gentian violet solution and were given a laxative to throw away into the bushes.”

Gentiana autumnalis, the autumn gentian, is also known as the pine barrens lily. The brilliant gentian violet-blue colors of the trumpet-shaped flowers in the fields and grasslands have a wider range of variations than the solution in the bottle, from pale blue to the most intense unique colors, petals dotted with tiny white circles, or green circles, leading to the center in white, green or yellow.

The flower itself can have four petals, the most numerous with five petals, and some with six petals, all with ‘pleats’ in between, with ragged edges and tendrils tapering outward from the pleats, perched on top of a long spindly naked stem with a few small narrow leaves.

Margaret Spellings deserved better Bill Friday was right.

Friday, the founding president of the 16 campus University of North Carolina System, fought with then-Governor Bob Scott in 1971 over the creation of the new system.

Friday recounted the fight in 2010, in an interview with me in front of an audience for NC SPIN’s 600th show.

Scott advocated for a 32member governing board with strong centralized power. Friday agreed the board should have central power but insisted that existing university trustees and campuses have say-so as to how the board was constituted.

Governor Scott, determined to have his way, gave the legislature a plum by telling them they could appoint the new 32-member board if they would pass his plan.

Friday strongly opposed it, but this was one battle he lost. In 1971, and again in 2010, he was adamant this structure had huge disadvantages.

He believed the legislature didn’t have the necessary expertise to appoint the board, that just gaining enough votes from the house or senate didn’t give anyone the qualifications needed to

“Comm check, Mrs. Baker,” she said into the microphone.

“Five by five, Janie.”

Janie tested the pedals to rotate the twin paintball guns, and gave a thumbs up to the paintball gunner in the next bus.

“139, Deadeye Janie’s ready,” Mrs. Baker – 142 -- said. “Who’s up top for you today?” the radio crackled.

“Hey, 142. I have Billy McDuffie on guns today.”

“He’s a fourth grader,” Janie muttered. “How am I supposed to compete with that?”

The bus jerked and moved out, and Janie hauled back on both charging handles.”

“Janie on 142, this is Marlie on 143.” That was quick.

“Go for Janie.”

“You ready for another gold star? There’s a blue sedan with chrome rims turning off Berkshire Street. He passed us the other day when my guns didn’t work.’

“You mean you missed,” Janie teased.

Marlie giggled.

“Well, Billy McDuffie didn’t get him either.”

“Have you seen the movie Coco yet?”

“It was okay. We watched it online. My mom says we can get it on Blu-Ray.” “Cut the chatter on the radio,” the principal’s voice cut in, followed by a chorus of “Yes, sir”.

make policy decisions for a statewide university system and that the temptation of injecting politics into university policymaking was too great and certain to occur.

Friday’s prescient forecast has become reality. What we are now witnessing is embarrassing, distracting from the goals of our system and further proof that North Carolina’s governance of all levels of public education needs fixing.

Margaret Spellings was hired after a newly reconstituted Board of Governors (BOG) surreptitiously fired Tom Ross as President, saying there was no problem with Ross’ performance, they just wanted a change. In other words, the firing was political.

The search for a new president was equally controversial. Spellings, who had been George Bush’s Secretary of Education, came to Chapel Hill amidst this controversy. Legislative leaders didn’t want her and the BOG, which has increasingly become a rubber stamp for the legislature, often exceeds its mandate of setting policy by attempting to run the system.

As relationships grew more tense it was speculated Spellings would fulfill her five-year contract, then leave. The breaking point may have come in September, when Spellings and then-Board of Governors chair Lou Bissette wrote a letter to Governor Cooper, asking the state’s help with increased security because of a potentially dangerous confrontation at a protest planned for Silent Sam the next night.

The letter further suggested that Cooper con-

vene the NC Historical Commission to determine the future of the statue, as prescribed by law. 15 of the 28 members of the BOG lashed out in criticizing her. Subsequent events proved Spellings’ concerns were justified.

Margaret Spellings just couldn’t take it any longer and looked for an escape, applying to become president of the University of Texas.

When she didn’t get that appointment, she decided enough was enough and resigned.

BOG member Steve Long summed up the situation, “I do believe that the leadership of our board has gotten too involved in the management of the university in certain cases and that’s why Margaret Spellings is leaving.

I feel like we’ve lost a great leader, and if she had been given greater authority, full authority to run the university, she would stay.”

President Spellings clearly articulated the goals for our universities and took positive steps to lower costs for a college education. She has done a commendable job. Margaret Spellings deserved better. So did Tom Ross.

And so do the people of North Carolina.

“Lacy Miller looks carsick again. Better watch her. Glad she’s the first stop.” The bus slowed, and with a practiced hand, Mrs. Baker flipped out the stop arm, and a dozen red lights begin flashing.

A dozen drivers obediently – almost fearfully – stopped a safe distance from the bus. Janie rotated her turret, thumbs poised above the triggers, glaring from behind her safety visor.

Her radio crackled to life again.

“142, 142,” the bus driver from 136 shouted. “You have a bogie, inbound from Somerset Street and Dairy Road. Blue sedan with – “ “--custom rims!” 143 said, finishing the sentence. “He just blew past us. We were at full stop.”

“Janie?’ Mrs. Baker -- asked. “You ready?” Janie’s Hello Kitty sneakers shoved the pedals, and the turret’s hydraulics squeaked as the paintball guns spun to face forward and a little ahead of the bus.

“On it, Mrs. Baker.”

As the bus monitor helped Lacy Miller from the bus to her mother’s waiting vehicle, the blue sedan passed two stopped

cars, hesitated as it approached the school bus.

“You want to fight a little girl?” Janie asked quietly, staring down the sights at the sedan.

The driver glanced around, and seeing no cops, punched the accelerator.

“Gotcha,” Janie piped.

Janie squeezed the double triggers, and watched with pleasure as a line of pink, yellow and green paintballs stitched across the hood, over the roof and down the back of the car. She kept her gun camera focused on the car as it drove away, and got a good image of the license plate. The camera system automatically uploaded the image and sent it to the Highway Patrol.

“Well done, Janie!” Mrs. Baker called.

“Gold Star Janie!” the paintballer on 143 called.

Janie smiled, and clicked the safeties on the paintball guns. She wondered if maybe her mom would let her ask Marley over to spend the night, and maybe play some video games. Marley was her friend, and she figured she could give her some pointers.

Disaster team works out of Willard Community Center

By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer An AmeriCorps Disaster Response Team (ADRT) has set up a base at Willard Outreach Community Center. The current team consists of 46 members who have come from all over the country to assist with disaster recovery in the wake of Hurricane Florence. AmeriCorps Disaster Response Teams.

(A-DRT’s) are made available by AmeriCorps state and national grantee programs that are committed to disaster response and recovery work.

A-DRTs engage in activities and trainings throughout the year, are a nationally deployable resource and are recognized in the emergency management community.

An Incident Command System (ICS) structure is used on deployments, and can be adjusted to align with the size of the operation. Once established, the deployed programs are managed under the AmeriCorps Incident Command Team (ACT).

Kayla Williams, Manager for the A-DRT team in Willard, is under the command of Utah Conservation Corps in Utah.

“We are from all over,” said Williams. “We provide free mucking and gutting services. We provide free mold suppression services, and we provide free tarp missions, so we do temporary tarping over roofs. We are looking for the people in need in Pender, Duplin, Onslow and Jones Counties.”

While the team currently has 46 members,

Williams said that that number might grow in the future, depending on how everything goes. The team could possibly open up another base in either Jones or Craven County to have people in that area, as well. The team has been in North Carolina since Oct. 11 when Williams came down to Raleigh for the day to go to a joint field office with FEMA. The team has been contracted by FEMA to go into communities and help.

Williams first got her start with disaster response several years ago.

“I have been really passionate about this for a couple of years now. My first disaster response was the flooding that happened in Baton Rouge in Louisiana. I was in the field mucking, gutting and doing mold suppression.

When we came home we did trail work primarily, and conservation work for the environment. Then I got sent out again as a liaison with Washington Conservation Corps for Hurricane Harvey and worked with them for two years,” said Williams.

Williams said that they had more than 200 people on the crew that responded to Harvey in Texas. After that,she helped with Hurricane Irma in Florida with a team of 100 members. The current team is planning

to remain in the area until November 26.

“We are looking for people that are uninsured, impoverished and need extra help; people with a disability of some kind, or have a sickness of some kind. A lot of this consists of doing our own research. We use “Crisis Cleanup,” which is a database for people to enter information into. We go into that and see what areas were hit the hardest, find out where these people are and then we go and see if they need help.

If they do, we go in there and see what else we can find in the area. We have flood maps and we have a lot of contacts that lead us in the right direction, which is really helpful.

Philippians 2:911 Coronation is the act of installing a sovereign on a throne. Christ the King Sunday (November 25, 2018 this year) is that time in the church year when

we remember who reigns in our life. Jesus of course is king. Christ reigning in glory.

We catch a glimpse of it in the transfiguration when Christ rises up in dazzling light, suspended above his disciples with Moses on one side and Elijah on the other, His true glory revealed.

We hear it in Philippians when Paul reminds us that Jesus has a name above every other name and at the name of Jesus every knee shall be and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.

We are reminded when Paul tells us that Christ

His hands raised in a kind of blessing over all, the risen Christ reigning in glory.

If you get up close to it, all you see is a green weaving with bits of color thread here and there. If you get up close you lose sight of the whole, you see only the pieces, but when you step back and look from a distance all the color threads take shape and you see the big picture, the true picture of Christ upon His throne, reigning in glory.

He is not just reigning there for Himself or His own glory. He is reigning there for you and for me. He is reigning there to draw us to himself and guide our very lives.

It easy in this world to just deal with the little

stuff, the everyday stuff.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to take life in little pieces and keep our focus very narrow and very near, but every now and then it is good to see the big picture.

Every now and then it is important to look beyond the everydayness of life, to stand back, to look up. Sometimes it is good to take our focus off the small bits of things that make up life and step back to see the big picture, to remember who is above and behind it all.

Christ the King day reminds us to pause from time to time and step back to see whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really guiding our world and our lives.

In Coventry Cathedral in Coventry, England, the new Cathedral built out of the ashes of the old one bombed to the ground in WW ll by the Germans, there is a tapestry said to be the largest tapestry in the world. It is 75 feet high and 38 feet wide. It hangs in a prominent place covering the whole wall at the far end of the entrance hall.

Renovating Atkinson School gym Burgaw one step in town revitalization

Recently, the Town of Atkinson has made a commitment to restore the gym back to its glory; to a time when there were school basketball games being played in it every week, and when it was being used regularly by the community. So far, the classic wooden floor has been restored and a new roof has been installed.

The gym has been painted, and plans are in the works for adding shutters.

Atkinson Mayor Ken Smith is looking forward to seeing the gym reopen.

He said that the next stage of the process will be to remodel the bathrooms and to continue with exterior work on the building. Repairs from storm damage both inside and outside of the gym may slow down progress, but he feels like the work can be taken care

He is hoping that people will reach out to contribute, including companies and individuals who can install the shutters, provide the necessary resources or help finance the project. Why are there so many variations in the colors, the petal shapes, the dot configurations on the petals? Why are some petals rounded, some sharply tapered, some flat, some curved?

I don’t have answers for any of these questions, but the gentians are such an interesting wildflower in all its variations to keep my interest up, to keep me looking forward to every new sighting, and every new season.

I have taken what I consider the very best picture of the best looking gentian ever in the history of biology as well as the history of photography, only to find one the very next day that surpasses the exquisite uniqueness of all the

The gym restoration is just one step towards revitalizing the town of Atkinson. The second stage will be to restore the school cafeteria. The cafeteria is currently being used as a distribution site for victims of Hurricane Florence who are still in need of assistance. In the future, Smith hopes to make improvements so that it will be a showpiece for the community and for the whole county.

“It really can be something that the whole county could use. In the future, I’d love to bring back some of the people, at least one a year, that played in this gym when the Atkinson School was open. I’d like for some of the former basketball players to come in and maybe put on a retro game for the community. I think the people would enjoy seeing that,” said Smith.

While the group is asking for and receiving assistance from all over, more help is still their greatest need.

Due to the widespread impact of Hurricane Florence, they are low on volunteers statewide. Many people that would normally contribute their time have had to take care of their own families, own communities and their own church families.

originated as a house built in 1917 by Amos Burton, who was the mayor of Burgaw at that time. It is built of solid brick, and the outer walls are two bricks thick. Katie Buck Noel bought the house from Mayor Burton in 1923 and lived there until her death in 1941. The house became a museum in 1979.

“I think this is going to be the first event for the December Christmas schedule for the town of Burgaw. It’s just a good friendship type of thing if you want to go out and have a good evening. Hopefully this year,

it’s going to put everything on a bright note. We are hoping to put a little happiness back into our county after the sadness and loss that so many people have had,” said Jones.

Tickets can be purchased from the following merchants in downtown Burgaw: Harrells Department Store, Brown Dog Coffee, Burgaw Antiqueplace, Realty World, Rochelle’s Furniture, Hart’s Florist, Bandana;s and Pender County Museum. The cost of tickets is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

These owners lament the lack of a level playing field since the food truck operator can provide products to the consumer without the burden of these operating costs.

This ordinance applies not just to food trucks, but to peddlers of other items such as T-shirts, fishing tackle, ice cream, artworks, furniture, and any other product that might appeal to the resident or vacationer in Surf City.

The ordinance, as it exists, would permit any or

all of these peddlers to set up shop on any privately owned property in Surf City.

The issue was deemed important enough to prompt a lengthy closed session, and as a result the council has announced that in place of their regularly scheduled early morning workshop session for November, there will be a meeting Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Community Center for the purpose of seeking public input on the peddler ordinance.

Moser has been doing this type of volunteer work since 1998 in one form or another. His group was within weeks of finishing the rebuilding from Hurricane Matthew when Florence hit. Most everything they rebuilt was flooded once again.

On a bright note, the houses they rebuilt had insurance this time around. Going forward, the question for many remains: How many times do you rebuild a house?

Many are saying they are not going back, and Moser says that is a good call to make.

“We have an excellent working ship in Pender County, and we are part of the decision-making team, working

with FEMA and sharing resources. Pender County values the amount of volunteer labor that we’re able to bring to the table. We are very blessed to be working hand in hand on that. As FEMA is doing their work, the left hand knows what the right hand is doing and we are coordinating - what are going to be the steps, what kind of grants are available, what kind of FEMA money are they getting and who is falling through the cracks. There will be a number of people that we just can’t help, but at least we’re sharing information and we’re blessed to have everybody singing off the same song page,” said Moser.

Big changes are coming next season for the avid waterfowl hunters. However, we don’t know quite what those changes are just yet.

Or do we?

I have often stated the duck hunting is one of the more challenging forms of hunting there is. First of all, duck

Is it too cold for the normal human to venture outdoors? Well, that means it is perfect for ducks.

Is there a threat of rain, freezing rain or sleet? You better have the boat, gun and dog ready because the ducks sure are. Is the wind blowing so hard that mud puddles have white caps? Awesome!

Ducks will really love it.

If it is so cold the waters have frozen, things are even better. After turning your boat into an icebreaker, opening a small area surrounded by ice to cast a few decoys works great, as the ducks need a place to land and you can supply that one lone location. Easy shooting, right?

Secondly, waterfowl hunters have to be at the top of their game in wildlife identification. Because there are various restrictions on different species of waterfowl, a hunter has to be able to determine the species and sex of a bird flying at 40 miles per hour, in the near dark through heavy fog, mist, or rain. Of course, the hunter has to be able to do all that and throw the shotgun stock upon is shoulder, lead the duck the appropriate length of distance determined by the speed, direction, and distance away from the hunter the duck is flying, then squeeze the trigger. Yep, duck hunting is super easy.

So, what are the changes? The Atlantic Flyway Council, which is basically the Bilderberg (if you don’t know what it is, look it up) Group of wildlife biologists on the eastern coast of the United States and Canada, have determined the Mallard population has hit a point where changes need to be made to keep them at a sustainable number.

Mallard bags will be cut in half to two total birds, only one of which may be a hen starting during the 2019-2020 season. After seeing a reduction in population of 20% and the number of drakes vastly outnumbering the number of hens, the biologists agreed the reduction was necessary.

Groups such as Delta Waterfowl have argued the bag limit should allow more male mallards, but cut the taking of hens since a large number of competing drakes as well as a small number of hens prevents proper growth in the populations.

While the Flyway Council listened, they decided not to increase the bag to three birds, but they did limit the hens to the one maximum.

Mallards are not the only species being affected. Canadian geese are also seeing restrictions implanted. Canadians just experienced their worst breeding season in 22 years according to biologists. Additionally, the geese have a lower reproduction potential and are affected by hunting much more. This has caused the Council to limit Canadian geese to two birds per day in the majority of the Atlantic Flyway, and to one bird in the Delmarva area (Delaware, Maryland and Virginia coastal waters).

If the coming restrictions do not see an improvement in numbers of mallard and geese, further plans could bring about shortened seasons with limited bags or even moratoriums in certain areas or the Atlantic in whole.

Continued from page 8A held in the gym before restoration began. A professional wrestling organization came from New Jersey put on a wrestling show, and filled the gym almost to capacity. Smith hopes to continue to hold more events like that in the future. Once the building is complete, he plans to reach out to Pender County Parks and Recreation about the possibility of using the facility as part of the existing basketball league, as well.

For the last two months, of Smith’s attention has been focused on disaster recovery. He has been heading up those efforts for the area of Atkinson and for most of western Pender County. He has also helped distribute supplies to various parts of the county, including Hampstead and Willard. While Atkinson is a small town, it has had a big impact on the county and a special role in the county’s recovery.

Prior to the storm, Smith had begun a campaign to run for Pender County

Board of Education. He put the campaign on the shelf when he realized the impact of Florence on the community. The election was not as important as helping the people that were homeless, hungry and seemingly hopeless.

When election night came, he was shocked to find out he had won.

“I’m a pastor before I’m a politician, and that’s where my heart is,” said Smith.

“My mama and my grandparents always put in my heart that the community has invested in me, so I have the obligation to give back.

As a minister, I feel strongly about that. That’s why I ran for Mayor, it’s the reason why I’m working with the town on the restoration and now also with the school board. I’m looking forward to working with the school system.”

But the story is different up north, particularly in the Cape Cod and other Massachusetts areas where the weather and waters have turned a lot colder and where they are dealing with their first wave of cold-stunned turtles.

Cold-stunning can kill, and even when it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t it can mean years of rehabilitation for the unlucky ones that develop problems related to the cold stunning. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impossible to know exactly how long a turtle has been distressed or how deeply the â&#x20AC;&#x153;freezeâ&#x20AC;? has invaded its body.

Cold stuns that were initially looking like maybe they were a relatively quick tur naround can end up with a long list of serious setbacks from compounding issues. Current patient Maverick is one example.

In December of 2017 a number of turtles were admitted to our facility initially from the northeast aquarium as cold stuns.

These Kempâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s were some of the tiniest weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve seen, and boy were they skinny and beaten up after being tossed around by the surf and finally deposited on the beaches where they lay exposed to the cold and wind.

We could treat his injuries with antibiotics, topical creams and ointments and a lot of TLC but if he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t start getting some protein into that little body he was not going to make it.

For most of last winter you would find our volunteers literally crawling along the floor in Sea Turtle Sick Bay, going tank to tank with fish, squid and crab trying to get a roomful of sick turtles to just eat something, anything!

Finally, success, and even Maverick got his appetite back and seemed to be on the road to recovery. At least it looked that way.

During the spring Maverick seemed to lose interest in his breakfast, and he spent more and more time just floating or sleeping on the bottom of his tank. His 11:35 AM Page 2 flipper joints swelled and looked inflamed and he was

reluctant to use them. It looked like we had another Pooh on our hands â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a long term cold stun that was finally released last spring after two years in rehab.

This is not easy to reverse.

Injections with meds that help mitigate the pain and repair the disease were now back on the schedule, which of course did not help his appetite.

And cold laser treatments on the affected bone and joint areas were added to the protocol. Now finally, after almost five months heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s starting to turn the corner.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eating well again, in fact Jean just put him on a diet! Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s now able to spend about 10 minutes in the therapy pool getting some movement back in his flippers while being closely monitored by our staff the

entire time.

Maverick is currently in Sea Turtle Sick Bay, which is warmer and quieter than the big house, along with critical care patient Mighty Mouse. Their care and feeding is in the afternoons so if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in for a tour stop by the windows and you might see first-hand the love that we put into our work.

Through mid-December we are open on our fall schedule/hours of two days a week, Thursdays and Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. We will not be open on Thanksgiving but will be open Friday, Nov. 23 for holiday shopping and adoptions.

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer When you see a 24-point disparity in a high school football game it is hard to single out any one - or more – play that made the difference. A 24-point difference is significant.

So when the scoreboard in Hampstead last Friday night read: New Hanover 38, Topsail 14 at the end of the key Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference game between the top two 3A teams in the conference that decided the top seed in the NCHSAA 3AA state playoffs, there were several plays, a 55-yard return of an interception for a touchdown, a nine-yard punt that set up the Wildcats’ second touchdown, and a dropped pass on fourth-and-seven that quashed an up-to-then successful drive – all of those coming in the first half, alone – where one could have pointed fingers.

But the true turning point in New Hanover’s sixth conference win (8-3 overall) came late in the first half, starting with 0:48.5 seconds remaining in the half and ending with 0:04.6 ticks on the clock, when Wildcat kicker Wesley Gaines broke a 1414 deadlock with a 16-yard field goal that not only gave the visiting team some much-needed momentum, it took the starch right out of the Pirates’ sails.

In My Opinion I spent Friday night at the Trask at Pender football game with a very dear friend of mine, Coach Ron Watson. Ron and I go back a very long way. He is the man that got me into this writing deal.

Way back in the day Ron was writing part time for the Pender Chronicle. He invited me to a game and the next week asked me if I would write a story for him. The next thing I knew I was head over heels into the sporting scene in Pender County.

That has been around 20 years.

Coach Ron has left some big footprints in Pender County. He coached at the Dixie Youth level when softball was still slow pitch.

He helped bring the fast pitch era into the county.

He coached Pop Warner football. In fact, he coached former Pender and Trask football coach Tony Hudson at the Pop Warner level. He coached football at the middle school and high school level. He was the first softball coach at Trask and also started the fall and then the summer Rotten Apple softball program.

I could go on and on about Ron’s accomplishments. However, there is a lot more to this man than accomplishments on the athletic front.

Ron Watson has touched literally thousands of young men and womens lives in a positive way.

He has mentored many young people. He has helped them through many tough times.

Coach Ron is battling some very serious and painful health issues. These issues have relegated him to using a cane, a walker and a wheel chair. Through all of this he has still tried to help as many people as he could.

Ron had not been to a high school football game in quite some time.

I went by and picked him up along with his son and we went to the game.

Although I didn’t get to spend as much time as I would have liked to with him, I thoroughly enjoyed that time.

Coach Ron Watson is one of Pender Counties best. If there was a hall of fame for the county, he would be in it. I love Ron Watson and I know for a fact that many of you do as well. Let’s pray for his healing. If anyone in this world deserves it,

Trask pulls away late, holds off Patriots

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer According to Webster’s dictionary, the word rival most commonly refers to a person or group that tries to defeat or be more successful than another person or group, which means that rivals tend to come in pairs. Teams, schools, or companies might be longtime rivals if they try over many years to outdo each other.

In the case of the Heide Trask High School Titans and the Pender Patriots, Webster hit the proverbial nail right on the head. Heide Trask and Pender have tried to outdo each other from the time the Rocky Point school was born from the Pender County students on the south side

of the county.

Last week the latest installment of the rivalry took the football field at Pender High School. When the dust cleared the Titans walked away with a hard earned 38-14 win.

“Everyone knows that this is a big rivalry,” said Trask Head Coach Jonathan Taylor. “These kids have known each other for years. It’s a big deal to them. Its bragging rights.”

By Bobby Norris and Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer Trask Wrestling The Heide Trask Titan wrestling team was thrown into the proverbial fire last year. According to Head Coach Chris Johnson, the difference in the 1A ranks and the 2A ranks is huge.

“The 2A ranks are no joke. I never realized there was that big a difference in 1A and 2A until we got put in the Coastal 8. There’s a lot of competition. Our conference has Croatan and Dixon. There is a lot of wrestling tradition there.

We’re going to be better, but that’s a tall order wrestling with those guys.”

The Titans have somewhere between 17 and 20 returning wrestlers from last years team that placed around 10 grapplers in the regional tournament.

Among those 10 combatants is what Johnson thinks will be his best wrestler in Rogan Heath. The 120-pound grappler finished with a 27-17 record last year and was among the best at his weight class in the conference.

Carlos Ruiz-Lopez is back at 152 pounds. He may start at 160 before working his way down to his best weight. He was 25-9 last year at 160 and should be better this year.

Eric and Elvis Lopez will be back as will Eric Aparicio. There is a log jam at 106 through 125. Kaven Garcia worked at 126 last year and is among those grapplers that will have to prove themselves in practice while 132 pounds seems secure with Jacob Johnson returning.

“The good thing about wrestling is that if you want a spot you have to beat the guy that wants it as well, “said Johnson. “We have a couple of weights that will be settled on the mat.”

Zion Cruse will come off the football field and step right onto the mat. He is a 170-pound beast.

“If Zion keeps the mistakes on the mat to a minimum, he can be very good. He logged quite a few matches last year and the saying goes the more mat time you get the better off you are.”

Coach Johnson admits that he will struggle at the upper weights. However, he is conceding nothing at this point.

“I may have to walk the halls and do some recruiting. We are pretty thin up top.”

When asked about his prognosis for the 2018-19 version of the Heide Trask Titan grapplers, Johnson seemed optimistic.

“I think we’ll be better than we were last year.

It really depends on how hard we work. Those five or six weeks we lost because

It seemed as if the Patriots had channeled the Pender Patriots of the past in the early going. The young Patriot offensive line was working over the Titan defensive front, giving junior quarterback Bryon Stewart time to throw the ball. It paid dividends when Stewart found Mikhel Henry in the flats.

Pirate wrestling, swim teams gearing up for big campaigns Topsail Wrestling Wesley Whitman begins his second year as the Pirates’ wrestling coach.

Topsail was 9-9 last year (5-5 in the conference) but Whitman is confident his group of grapplers are primed to take huge steps up in the conference standings – possibly all the way to the top.

“The Pirates have returning state qualifiers this upcoming season, and we also have some young, talented wrestlers looking to make an impact early,” Whitman said.

“We are young, and we have a lot of young talent needing varsity wrestling experience, but we are looking to shake things up in the conference. Exciting things are happening in the practice room, and we expect to be at the top of the standings.”

Whitman’s reason for optimism centers around a group of wrestlers that did well in the conference individual championships in 2017-18 – returning individual champions Nathan Bray and Noah LaValle, conference runnerup Ethan Rivenbark, and third-place finisher David Diaz.

“Nathan is a returning conference champion,” Whitman said. “He lost only one match in the regular season. He will be one of the seniors we will rely on to lead our guys in battle.

He is currently ranked in the top five in the state.

“Noah is a returning state qualifier, a regional champion, and a conference champion. He is currently ranked third in the state.

Noah brings a lot of excitement to the mat, and he is a great kid.

“Ethan is a returning state qualifier and is currently ranked in the top 10 in the state. Ethan is also a senior who brings great leadership to our program.

Topsail opens its schedule Saturday (Nov. 17) in Morehead City at the Beach Brawl Invitational at West Carteret High School.

Pender Wrestling According to Pender Patriot wrestling coach Dave Hannah, his Patriot grapplers have been on the young side. In the last few years the team was filled with a lot of underclassmen working their way through the rigors of a high school wrestling season. This years squad returns several upperclassmen with the talent and experience to take the next step.

“This is the first year in a while that we have a lot of juniors and seniors, “said Hannah. “There is a huge difference in a junior or senior verse a freshman or sophomore. Just the physical maturity makes a difference.”

Leading the way for the Pats will be senior Andrew Ocampo. He wrestled at 106 last year. He was third in the regionals and lost in the semi final round of the championship bracket at the state meet. He should be back at 106 and will be a difference maker for the Pats.

Tyler Sawyer and Eli Blanton will both be back this year after having successful campaigns a year ago. Sawyer will work at 152 again while Blanton will be back at 160. Both were good last year and will benefit from another year of growth and maturity.

Coach Hannah sees his squad as being very good in the middle weights with a couple of the lighter weights making a difference as well.

“We have about 10 or so guys out so far. We’re waiting for the football players to come out. We are expecting quite a few from there.

Our strong guys are spread out so that will help us as a team.”

The Patriots wrestle in the Coastal 8 Conference with Trask and a bevy of traditionally strong programs such as Dixon and Croatan. That being said the Patriots should be the best 1A school in the conference.

“I expect us to win the 1A portion of the conference and make it to the regionals, “said Hannah.

“I hope to get three guys in the states this year.”

The Pats opened the season at Topsail on Thursday.

Another failed conversion set the score at 12-8 Trask.

Carr scored on an 11yard jaunt with 1:20 left in the first half and the Titans took an 18-8 lead into the break.

Although the Patriots were down by 10 points going into the second half of play, it seemed as if they had found the confidence that had been missing for most of the year.

Pender used a balanced attack featuring the arm of Stewart and the speed of his receivers to march 58 yards in 10 plays with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Seth Pyland cutting the Titan lead to four points with 3:40 to go in the third period. The Titans would answer quickly.

Khamari Gorham finished off a 65-yard drive with a 13-yard run early in the fourth period. That set off a 20-0 run by the Titans that erased any hopes of a home team Patriot upset.

The Titans were led by Antonio Carr. The senior standout finished off his career with 177 yards and two touchdowns. Gorham chipped in 138 yards and

a touchdown on just nine carries. The Titans rushed for 402 yards.

Zion Cruse led the defense with two sacks and a fumble recovery in the end zone.

Stewart led the Patriot offense with 9 for 16 effort covering 148 yards.

He threw two touchdowns and one interception. The Titan defense held the Patriots to 45 yards of offense in the second half after giving up 176 yards in the first half.

The Titans ended their season with a 5-6 record overall including a 4-3 Coastal 8 Conference mark.

Pender ended their year with a 1-10 record that included a 1-6 conference mark. Neither team made the playoffs.

The regular season is finally over and the only Pender County team left standing is the Topsail Pirates. Both Trask and Pender failed to be invited to the festivities. Lets take a look at the Pirates first round matchup.

Topsail at New Hanover I was talking to a friend last weekend just hours before the playoff brackets were released and they thought out loud, “wouldn’t be something if Topsail drew New Hanover in the first round of the 3A playoffs? Well, guess what? The NCHSAA never fails to outdo themselves. Topsail comes into the playoffs as an 11 seed while the sixth seed was given to New Hanover.

Last week the Pirates played the Wildcats almost evenly in the first half despite what can be considered an off night from junior quarterback Cody Wallis.

The Cats returned an interception for a touchdown and Wallis threw three picks.

That wont happen again.

The Pirates powerful running game was on display in the first half but was derailed in the second half. Junior Noah Lavalle was held in check in the second half after running for close to 80 yards in the first half. The New Hanover faithful attributed this to an adjustment at the half. The Topsail coaching staff will be ready for that this time around.

This is the Wildcats second year at the 3AA level after playing at the 4A level for many years. The Cats won the state championship last year. However. They have shown that they can be beat.

In New Hanover’s three losses they have faced a quarterback that can throw the ball. Wallis had a bad game last week.

It doesn’t matter what the Wildcat coaching staff attributed that to, he is much better than the numbers he put up last week.

New Hanover does not run the ball very well. It has been proven that if you stop senior QB Blake Walston they can be beat. He was a combined 29-80 in the team’s three losses this year.

The Pirates have a much more balanced offense. It is a conventional run first offense with Lavalle (1,626/17 TD) carrying the bulk of the load. However, Coach Wayne Inman is not afraid to let his junior quarterback throw the football.

Here’s how I see it playing out. The Pirates will go to their bread and butter right off the bat, that is if Lavalle is healthy. He was nicked up last week. Assuming he is healthy the Cats will see him often early on. Inman will ease his quarterback into the affray. One of the keys to the success of the Topsail offense could be Hayden Walsh. He has the size and athletic ability to run at and over the Wildcat defenders. He will catch some short passes. A few completions will open things up for Lavalle and company.

The key to the game will be slowing Walston down. The Wildcat running game does not scare anybody. Topsail will have to force them to run the football. Walston needs to be on the turf every time he drops back to pass.

If Walston is held in check and Wallis bounces back from last week’s game, the Pirates win this football game. I believe its possible. This game is closer than last weeks contest. The home field advantage and the big game experience gives the Wildcats the edge. The score: New Hanover 35 – Topsail 27.

Top Performers

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Last week was the final week of the regular season of the football season that would never end. The season was extended due to the storm. This year will forever be the year that Florence wreaked havoc on our area.

The Heide Trask Titans visited the Pender Patriots for the annual rivalry bowl. The action was hot and heavy for three quarters of play. The Titans eventually wore down the Pats and took the win.

Pender quarterback Bryson Stewart threw two touchdown passes. Seth Pyland and Mikhel Henry caught those scoring tosses. Pyland also had an interception for the Patriot defense. I would be remiss if I did not mention senior Lavell Henry. He played his heart out each and every Friday night for the Patriots.

Trask rushed for more than 400 yards in the game. Antonio Carr rushed for 177 yards. He found the end zone twice.

Khamari Gorham rushed for 137 yards as well.

Trask senior Zion Cruse had two sacks and recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown. Trask senior Foster Williamson had a sack and led the Titans in tackles. Fellow senior Mac Richardson had a good game on the defensive side of the ball and also had a few carries on the offensive side of the ball. He rushed for over 30 yards. Senior quarterback Jake

Johnson sored a touchdown late in the game, ending his high school football career in style.

The Topsail Pirates fell to New Hanover last week. They finished the year at 9-2 and will visit New Hanover’s Legion Stadium on Friday to engage the Wildcats for the second time in a week.

Junior standout Noah Lavalle rushed for 96-yards and two touchdowns in the game while Hayden Walsh had two catches for 60 yards.

This week’s top performer is Trask Titan senior Antonio Carr. He became a force for the Titans this year. He had 177 yards in the win over Pender. He finished the year with 770 yards and eight touchdowns while averaging more than eight yards a carry.

Topsail swim team gears up for big campaign

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer Most of the concentration in the high-school sports’ world in the winter season concentrates on girls’ and boys’ basketball – especially in North Carolina where strong collegiate teams like Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State – and, yes, UNC-Wilmington – dot the landscape.

But off the basketball court there are a plethora of outstanding athletes that

ply their respective special abilities in the (limited) swimming facilities around the state that stress – not only the team concept – but the individual one-on-one skills that come with their sport.

Topsail has enjoyed success in swimming, and this year coaches indicate their team are ready to take the next steps in the journey that leads to contention in the Mid-Eastern 3A/4A – and beyond.

Since she came to Topsail eight years ago, Shannon Crate has sent excellent teams – and individuals – into the pools in the area, and in 2018 fans should expect more of the same.

County indoor track programs prep for cold outdoor meets

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer If ever there as a misnomer in sports, it is calling what occurs on outdoor venues during the months of December-through-early February, “Indoor” track,” since a lack of proper indoor facilities forces the talented runners, jumpers, and throwers who participate to run most of their meets outside.

But the cold weather does not deter the group of athletes who give up their time – and warmth – to compete in a sport they love.

Truth is, track and field is often considered a “minor sport” even during its busier time in the spring, so these athletes often labor in obscurity during the “indoor” season.

All three Pender County schools participate during the winter with Pender and Trask competing in Coastal 1A/2A Conference meets primarily held at North Brunswick, Pender, and Trask, and Topsail competing at venues like Swansboro and White Oak. s0ENDER The Patriot girls and guys go all out under 14-year head Coach Bevin Stokes and assistant coaches Laura Eakins and Johnny Bowman with strong numbers dotting both rosters.

“We are eager to learn new events,” Stokes said.

“We lost a lot of our speed last year and we will be relying more on our field events and longer races to score points. We will do our best and compete in the athletes’ best events and see where the chips fall.

“With football not yet over it is hard to realize the full potential of this boys’ team. Right now we only have distance runners and a couple of sprinters.

Hooping to increase the boys’ roster once football is over.”

Dzurocvin ends career as a Trask winner

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer When the 2018 high school football season began, the Heide Trask Titans were hopeful that this season would be the one that dreams were made of.

Unfortunately, things happened that were totally out of the players control.

However, the seniors on the team fought hard until the end.

One of those seniors was the big man on campus, Michael Paul Dzurocvin.

M.P. played his heart out night in and night out. He started the year nursing an injury but fought through it and became a force on both the offensive and defensive line.

Michael Paul improved dramatically from year to year.

Although Michael Paul Dzurocvin’s high school football career is over, he can look back on his time on the field with fondness.

Zaria Newkirk, and Chris Devane. Top retur nees include senior Mya Fisher, Faith Lana, Lavell Henry, and Makhel Henry.

On the girls’ side, Fisher will run middle distance and in the sprint relays, and Lana will compete in the (long, high, and triple) jumps, as well as the sprint relays.

“We are looking for strong leadership from Mya,” Stokes said. “She should qualify for the state indoor meet in the 500 and the 4x400 relay. Faith has been a dominant jumper in the conference since she entered high school. She is nursing an injury from volleyball and we hope to have her at full strength soon.”

Stokes is also hoping for prime-time performances from sophomore thrower Alexis Keith, sophomore distance runner Helena Moretz, and jumper and sprinter Nichole Parrish.

“We are looking for big things from Alexis,” Stokes said. “We hope to get her qualified for the state meet in the first couple of meets.

Helena is coming off a strong cross-country season, and we are hoping to build on that success during the indoor season.

“Nichole is looking to build off her performances last spring. Last year she showed g reat potential moving forward to this year.”

For the guys, the Henry brothers are hoping to continue to build on their successes of a year ago.

“Both Makhel and Lavell were members of the state championship 4x100 relay team, and we are looking for both of these talented runners to build on that success this year.” Stokes said. s4 R A S K Veteran (17 years) Coach Bill Mercier has 23 returning letter winners for the boy with the strength of the team centered on the distance

runners and the weakness currently settling in on the throwers.

Key returners include Jake Johnson (sprints, middle distance), Luis Hernandez (distance), Michael Walker (hurdles), Ky’Waun Warner (hurdles, sprints), Samuel Marks (sprints, jumps), Jose Rojas Cruz (throws), Hunter Cooper (distance), Michael Benton (distance), Jade Mills (distance), and Nathan Reig (distance).

Mercier is also high on newcomer Louis Velasco (distances).

Things are a little lighter on the girls’ side of the ledger where Mercier has just three girls – Lauren Nance (sprints), Gabby Therrassant (hurdles), and Cheyenne Hicks (Hurdles) returning F i r s t m e e t fo r b o t h Pender and Trask is Nov. 14 (Wednesday) at Pender. s4OPSAIL Tisha London has been coaching track for 17 years, 13 of them at Topsail, and she is back to work with a strong group of athletes, especially on the girls’ side of things.

The biggest loss on either side came with the graduation of standout thrower Adam Har t to graduation. Senior Johnathan Ward is expected to be one of the leaders for the boys as he splits his time between basketball and track.

But it is on the girls’ side where the strength lies, with solid athletes spread throughout the events led by junior Madison Lofton – one of the top sprinters, indoors or out, in the state, top-notch thrower (shot put discus) Payton Little available when she is not leading the Lady Pirates on the basketball court, Ariana Blevins in the jumps, and the dynamic duo of sophomores Makayla Obremski and Isabella Bufalini in the middle-distance (800) and distance (1,600/3,200) races.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer A high school football player can make a name for their selves by doing many things. Then there are those that can run the football. In some cases there are those that can do many things well. Over at Topsail High School senior defensive back/receiver Cameron Barras is one of those guys.

Although Barras is listed as a wide receiver on the team roster, he has spent some time running the football. However, he has done his best work catching the football. He has racked up 22 receptions this year and has caught five touchdown passes from Junior Cody Wallis.

No matter what the circumstance, the young man they call Bam-Bam has played his heart out.

Cameron Barras has given the Pirates 110 percent on the field and off. He will missed.

Marshall – to graduation, one (Julia Oakley) to injury, and two more (Addi Dostie and Isabel Shook – to relocation, but Crate points to three returning swimmers as one of the strengths of the team.

“Madison Hoover Tihani Contreras, and Delaney Popella were all state qualifiers last year, and they have continued to improve,” Crate said. “The girls’ team, however, was impacted more by graduation than the boys and it is a smaller team than last year, so we may not have as much depth as we are used to.”

Crate listed all three of her top retur nees as contenders for conference individual honors, and says the team should finish third or fourth in the conference after finishing second a year ago.

“Madison (freestyle/ backstroke) had a great season last year, and has

continued to improve in all events,” Crate said. “Delaney (breaststroke/butterfly) plans on expanding her event repertoire this year, and will be a great asset to the team if she can add freestyle in again after not being able to swim it last season.

“Tihani (freestyle/backstroke) has put a lot of work in since last season to improve her state-qualifying swims from last season.”

The Pirate boys’ team suffered some heavy losses from last year with Kennard MacVaugh, James Mongeau, and Kevin Zhang lost to graduation, but Crate welcomes back a solid group of swimmers back, led by Chase Davis, Trent Butler, Devin Schmitz, Travis Souza, Brad Kimmel, Jon Gallagher, and Nick Gallek from a team that was third in the conference.

“This is probably the deepest boys’ team that I have ever had in my eight

years at Topsail,” Crate said. “It is still a fairly young team and I haven’t had enough time to see where all the pieces fit into place yet. There are lots of unknowns.”

Even with that thought in mind, Crate was confident enough to pick her boys’ team to finish second in the conference, and listing Davis, Galek, Butler, and Devon Taylor as contenders for some of the top individual honors in the conference, especially singling out Davis.

“Chase has much more experience this year and is still getting faster,” Crate said. “He is hoping to repeat a state meet qualifier.”

The opening meet is s ch e d u l e d fo r N ov. 1 5 (Thursday) at the UNCW Natatorium against Hoggard, Laney, and New Hanover. Meet No. 2 is Dec. 6 – also at UNCW – against Laney, Ashley, and New Hanover.

strong for Topsail (9-2, 5-2) as they took the opening kickoff and moved from their own 35-yard line to the Wildcat 33 where Pirate junior quarterback Cody Wallis (10-for-20, 148 yards, three interceptions), trying to avoid a sack and a huge loss, lofted an ill-advised pass that floated into the waiting arms of Wildcat defensive lineman Rasheed Wallace, who rambled 65 yards into the end zone.

It appeared a lopsided game was on the horizon just before the first quarter ended when Walston found junior wide-receiver Chase Hardee (nine catches, 107 yards) alone and hit for a 14-0 New Hanover lead.

But a 57-yard pass play from Wallis to Pirate senior running back Hayden Walsh, who ran over several Wildcats and broke several tackles after catching a short screen pass, gave Topsail new life and, although the drive was haled by a dropped pass, it shifted the momentum and Topsail closed to within

14-7 on a two-yard run by Noah Lavalle (22 carries, 89 yards, two TDs).

Noah Gaither then recovered a Wildcat fumble on New Hanover’s next possession and the Pirates drove 62 yards on nine plays, tying the game at 14-14 on a LaValle 11-yard run with 0:48.5 seconds left in the half.

LaValle had 73 of his 89 yards rushing in the first half. But, according to New Hanover Coach Earl Smith, a defensive adjustment at halftime plugged that lane, limiting LaValle to six carries for 16 yards in the second half.

“I don’t think moving the linebacker up into what is known as the “Bear” defense made that much difference,” Inman said. “We were already two scores down. I think our biggest problems was our kicking game, which is usually a strength. I guarantee their average starting field position was 40-plus (49, 44,

And somehow – in the infinite wisdom not utilized by the NCHSAA – that game at Legion Stadium in Wilmington will feature sixth-seeded New Hanover playing host to No. 11 Topsail.

“There’s three important times in a ball game,” Topsail Coach Wayne Inman said. “The first five minutes of the game, the last five minutes of the first half, and the first five minutes of the second half.

All those are big momentum times in a game and they captured the first five minutes of the game, then they went and captured the last five minutes of the first half.

“We scored 14 unanswered points and I intentionally did not use any of the timeouts (two) I had left on the clock in that second drive because I wanted to leave them with as little times as possible. When we scored with about 46 seconds left I looked at (assistant coach Adams) Brandon and said we might have just left too much time up there Then they scored in the first five minutes of the second half, and the momentum change completely.”

Henry fought hard till the end at Pender High

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer The Pender patriot varsity football team had a tough year.

Although the Pats struggled in the win column, they played their hearts out week in and week out.

One of the seniors that played as hard as any player on the team was senior running back/defensive back Lavell Henry.

Henry led the Patriots in rushing attempts, rushing yards gained as well as in touchdowns scored.

He was a force on the defensive side of the ball as well.

As a senior on a team full of underclassmen, Lavell was charged with being a leader both on the field as well as in the hallways. He took that position seriously.

Lavell’s high school football career is over but he has a bright future in what ever he decides to do in the future.

“We would rather play someone else but when you have a rematch like this the state makes more money,” Inman said. “It wouldn’t

be so bad if the schedule hadn’t been affected by the hurricane and we had played them a little earlier rather than in back-to-back weeks.

“I honestly believe we can beat them but we have to drastically improve out kicking game and make them have to drive the length of the field. The other thing is I don’t think we can play press (pass) defensive on them, we have to change up our coverage defensively, and we are going to have to run the football downhill more and control the ball, and we can’t have any turnovers.
