Closed more than five weeks due to storm

By Andy Pettigrew Post & Voice Publisher After more than five weeks out of school, Pender County students will return to the classroom next week.

In an announcement Monday evening, Pender School Superintendent Dr. Steven Hill said the School Board and staff have worked with government representatives, FEMA consultants, public adjusters and contractors to ensure the most viable

reopening dates for Pender Schools. School officials had said last week the system was working toward a tentative opening date of either Oct. 18 or 22.

Sullivan said after careful review of the most recent information received by contractors conducting remediation work across the district, keeping in mind the time required for facilities to be tested by a hygienist and deemed safe for occupancy, and public

Who is in charge?

I wonder when situations like our recent hurricane arise, who takes the lead? Who is in charge of making sure that all the bases are covered? Who even knows everything that needs to be done?

Where do you begin? These are questions I pondered as we traveled 10 hours to Florida on an impromptu evacuation vacation when Florence took aim for the North Carolina coast as a category four hurricane, the worst in our state’s history My man, a retired Marine, had a great plan for us to stay just across the bridge in Sneads Ferry.

We were excited to secure the last pet friendly room at the Quality Inn, hoping to get back on the island shortly after the storm.

I was cool with staying close, our plan seemed sound until they evacuated not only the island but also our entire county.

"ITING INTO MY BURRITO at lunch, I teared up and got a gripping gut feeling we needed to flee further SOUTH "UT WHERE WAS THE question of the hour? No place in North Carolina seemed much safer. So what a blessing it was for friends to call from Florida, insisting we evacuate to their new beach home.

We are careful how and with whom we share our hurrication story, knowing that many of our neighbors did not fare so well.

We couldn’t believe the caravans of electrical trucks and military vehicles carrying fuel and supplies from north as we traveled south. We counted more than 100 of them returning on our way back home nine days later.

There were relief services and tractor-trailers from everywhere, as far away as Mississippi, parked in church parking lots providing food and supplies to those restoring our power and those in need of it.

I was especially impressed to see our very own Surf City mayor directing traffic on my way to church, and later tearing up as he listened to our church family share storm experiences.

This was classic leadership at all levels, just like I teach in the corporate world. Even when I went to volunteer at Share the Table for my first time this week, there was not just one leader, but many, diligently doing different jobs.

Our island is in shambles but our spirits still soar with pride in our courage and capacity to come together as a commUNITY and do what it takes to rebuild our homes and our lives Everybody is in charge of something all the time.

We all lead in different ways, while also seeking leadership from others.

Rebuilding will be a long process, and we are all in this together.

Take charge.

Deep inside, I found an advertisement that confused and amused me. It also reminded me that there are some pretty strange people in this world.

A business in this magazine offered 12 services to enhance one’s “mindful living.� Of the 12 services, which were described in around 20 words, I actually recognized maybe eight of the words.

Whilst I am not the most learned man in the world, I think I have a pretty decent vocabulary; I can also recognize several handsful of words and phrases in several foreign languages, although I wouldn’t say I’m fluent. I am nowhere near as provincial as I sometimes appear, nor as provincial as I would like to be. I am open to at least hearing about new ideas.

That little advertisement was the first time I’d heard of ear candling. It’s some hot (no pun intended) new trend. Somehow the concept of inserting a candle into one’s ear and setting it on fire frightens me. At the risk of being indelicate, Mama fussed if I was too aggressive with a Q-tip; I cannot imagine what would happen if I shoved a lit candle in my ear.

Then there was crystal healing. I hate to break the news, but there is no way a rock is going to heal anything. I guess if it’s a particularly attractive rock, and it relaxes you to look at it, then it has some healing power—but a crystal isn’t even good for firing out a slingshot at the neighborhood bully, much less skipping across a farm pond.

Having once been in a bar where a hypnotist made people cluck like a chicken, I fear I distrust anyone promising hypnotherapy; I wondered, though, if the hypnotherapy helped customers get over the fact that they were paying someone to insert burning candles in their ears.

This particular establishment also offered something called chakra clearing.

Jefferson Weaver ever had, even though ramming old shacks with a dump truck should not be considered relaxing. I was even paid to be a diesel-powered homewrecker, courtesy of the federal rehabilitation funds. It was wonderful. Odd occupations, however, are a column for another day.

Anyway, I’ve helped clear many things, but for the life of me, I don’t think I’ve ever cleared a chakra.

All I can figure is a chakra is some kind of “growed-up� field, maybe like a really bad Carolina bay. I guess some owners of chakras can’t afford gas for friend’s bush hog, and are allergic to goats.

The more I read, the more I realized these new age folks did have a few services I recognized, or so I thought.

They offered dowsing, for instance.

Now, anyone who has ever lost a well knows what dowsing is. A skilled dowser can take two sticks or a piece of wire and “dowse� underground water sources.

It is amazing to lightly hold the forked dogwood branch between two fingers and watch it point at the ground. Dowsing seemed out of place for this business, but I figured a lot of the new age folks need new wells after their chakras are cleared Continued on page 4A

Kathy and I were on our way home one from North Topsail Island one autumn day several years ago, and as we turned the corner onto Hwy 210, I saw a couple of cars swerve to miss something in the road. “Holy cow!� I said, or something like that, as I got closer and saw a large dark object in the middle of the road. “It’s a snapping turtle!�

And it was, and a trophy one at that, washtub size. Obviously it had been crossing the road, but I couldn’t tell for sure whether he was traveling north or south. I thought it would be better for everyone, turtle and motorists, to urge it off the middle of the road.

You can’t verbally encourage some animals.

Try clucking your tongue and a cat or dog will likely wander over to see what’s up. A snapping turtle won’t.

I had a canoe paddle in the car, and used it to try to pry the turtle over to the side, but it resisted, and snapped at and bit the paddle. The snapper was just too heavy. Undaunted, I went back into the car and pulled out a clam rake, the kind with a sturdy wire basket attached.

I muscled the tines under the turtle and pulled and skidded the turtle off the side of the road into the reeds and cattails in the ditch on the lower side of the road.

As we got back into the car and drove off, Kathy wondered, “What if it was going to the other side?� “Too bad,� I thought to myself, “I don’t really care,� and didn’t look back.

Wikipedia offers some insight and advice: “The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is noted for its combative disposition when out of the water with its powerful beak-like jaws, and highly mobile head and neck. Common snapping turtles can be very aggressive if restrained or approached on land, and have a bite powerful enough to mutilate human fingers. “It may be tempting to rescue a snapping turtle found on a road by getting it to bite a stick and then

dragging it out of immediate danger. This action can, however, severely scrape the legs and underside of the turtle and lead to deadly infections in the wounds. The safest way to pick up a common snapping turtle is by grasping the carapace above the back legs. There is a large gap above the back legs that allows for easy grasping of the carapace and keeps hands safe from both the beak and claws of the turtle.� “Serpentina� refers to the fact that a snapping turtle’s snakelike head and neck stretch out further than you might expect, and during an aggressive action it seems to extend fully two thirds of the turtle’s shell length.

A resent first hand experience confirms those words of advice.

Driving through Holly Shelter recently I saw a small turtle crossing the road, so I pulled over and got out to take a couple of pix. I had my cell phone, and after a few pix, decided I did not want to get any closer, when the turtle reached the same conclusion at the same time, and launched itself at my phone and fingers, snapping with mouth wide open. What surprised me was not the extent its neck stretched out but that it launched itself in the air, too, the spring power from its legs and the inertia from its head lifting it completely off the ground and propelling it forward, in a way like an eager dog jumping for a treat.

I’ve had many encounters with snapping turtles, one time catching one on a silver spoon while bass fishing, apparently thinking the shiny fishing lure was a minnow swimming by. It was so big I thought I’d snagged a log or was caught up on the pond bottom, but I realized it was slowly being reeled in. I saw it was a turtle, and knew I couldn’t lift it from the water so I pulled it over to the bank and up onto solid ground. I knew I didn’t want to take my lure from the live turtle’s mouth, and wasn’t sure what to do next, when a local resident saw what I had caught and offered to take it home for dinner.

The snapping turtles encountered in Holly Shelter have always seemed to be going somewhere, often seen walking down the middle of the road, or walking along one of the ditches. Is retailing going out of business?

About this time each year we looked forward to receiving the Sears Wish Book. This wonderful catalogue was about three inches thick, packed with

thousands of items. It was the official kickoff to Christmas and long before Thanksgiving its pages were dogeared, ripped and marked with all the toys and games we wanted from Santa. You could phone in your order and have it mailed to you.

Until 1989 Sears was the largest and one of the most profitable retailers in the nation, but is now closing stores left and right, losing millions of dollars and facing bankruptcy.

They aren’t alone. In 2017, Toys R Us, Hhgregg, The Limited, RadioShack, Gymboree, and Gander Mountain filed for bankruptcy – more closures in one year than ever recorded.

What’s caused these

and other iconic retailers to meet to their end? The very nature of shopping, especially retailing, has changed and many stores haven’t or couldn’t adapt quickly enough.

The revolution Richard Sears started in the 1890s with his catalogue is coming full circle through the Internet. Jeff Bezos and Amazon are the public face of today’s reality. I watch the UPS and FedEx trucks come into my neighborhood every day.

My neighbors (and I) like the convenience, product availability and perceived savings of buying online.

With their smart devices, today’s consumers are savvier than ever, but retailers are also.

Report significant storm damage before tax reval The Pender County Tax Department is finalizing the 2019 Pender County reevaluation. Tax values will be effective January 2019.

The tax office is attempting to capture significant storm-related damages that have occurred during Hurricane Florence.

“We need our property

owners in Pender County to report damage to us,” said Justian Pound, Pender County Tax Assessor. “If we know about damages now we will attempt to reflect those damages that are still affecting property as of January 1. We know our properties have been impacted across the county,

so please contact the tax office at 910-259-1221.”

Pound said the 2019 evaluation notice would do the department’s best to reflect damages. However, residents will always have the right to appeal that notice. Instructions for appeal will be included in the 2019 valuation notice.

anyone of anything, but at least that explains why these folks have to get someone else to clear their chakras. They don’t have any goats, having sacrificed all of them via the shaman to the Great Cosmic Muffin.

I would like to have these rather odd folks spend a week with me. They could call it a spirit quest, if it made’em feel better.

They advertise spiritual healing – but there is no spiritual healing that can compare to the glory of God’s grace, lifted up in praise and worship in a country church on a Sunday morning.

No crystal can heal like the simple therapy of watching and feeding chickens—real chickens, that is. Candles belong on a birthday cake for a squealing child or a grandmotherly lady of a certain age, not shoved into one’s ear.

I’d introduce them to some real hypnotherapy – the calming sounds of the Cape Fear on a Saturday night, a trance broken only when the tip of a fishing rod bends double and the reel sings.

No touchy-feely counseling session can compare to the advice of an old man on a front porch, a mother at a kitchen table, or the self-help gurus drinking coffee and Cokes at a country store.

If these new age folks really want to help people and heal’em, they need to quit sniffing incense, get the candles out of their ears, and go somewhere people actually work for a living.

They need to realize that a ki is not some mystical presence hanging around one’s neck, but what you use to start the truck.

In some ways, I guess I should feel bad about poking fun at new age treeworshippers, but I just can’t understand people who don’t see that everything they need can be found in a country store, a spirit-filled church, or a grandmother’s kitchen.

As for the other problems – guarantee I have a neighbor whose goats can clear the daylights out of the nastiest chakra, and a friend who can dowse out a new well, too.

And neither service will cost you a single goat.––

Leigh later told me it was the most violent encounter he had ever witnessed.

Turtles move a lot faster that you might imagine.

The turtle I encountered snapped at the cell phone a couple of times, and I went to the car to get another camera on a monopod, and when I poked it out toward the turtle, it turned and sped off.

On another occasion, a friend was demonstrating a pond turtle, a yellow bellied slider, to a group of school children. One little girl had been in the circle closest around the turtle,

and, distracted by another child, my friend turned, turtle in hand, which passed close to the little girl’s fingers. Quick as a flash, the turtle’s head extended and it bit the tip of the finger, but only just barely, and only the first layer of skin, a very small nip.

The child was startled, and didn’t know what to do, and the adults looked at her finger, saw that the injury was superficial, wiped it with an alcohol wipe and applied an adhesive bandage, and she was none the worse for the experience.

A valuable lesson learned: remember, wild animals are wild and unpredictable. Keep your distance.

I was almost willing to at least give this business the benefit of the doubt until I saw the next line— shamanic healing. The root word of the modifier there is “shaman.” Webster’s defines shaman as “a priest or witch doctor… he uses magic to propitiate gods and spirits, foretell the future, heal, etc.”

I had several concerns with this. When I need physical healing, I go see a doctor. When I need spiritual healing, I go talk to my pastor. Neither one is a witch doctor, although I have seen some doctors and pastors who were better equipped with salamanders and chicken feathers than they were with medicine or the Holy Bible.

A few weeks ago I saw a commotion in the ditch out front, a large male on top of a female, her head only occasionally visible under the surface of the water. And within a week, my friend Leigh posted some pix on his Facebook describing an encounter he had witnessed.

“I was cutting up a tree for a neighbor when I noticed several people paying attention to the pond across the street.

I know there is a small alligator in the pond and I thought it had caught

like the VIC,VIP, MVP or others, and we feel satisfaction when told how much money we saved using their loyalty program.

But do not be misled. Some data server somewhere is cataloguing everything you buy and these retailers know more about your shopping habits than you can imagine. Every month my grocer sends us coupons of the items we frequently purchase, trying to lure us back to their store.

We can now go online and purchase most anything, choosing between having items delivered to our door or, in some instances, driving to the store where our purchases are brought to the car. One vendor allows you to purchase a car without having to go to a dealership and go through the hassle of negotiating. Delivery

can be taken from what looks like a giant vending machine or by having the vehicle delivered to you.

Amazon is testing a concept in which there are no check-out lines. You take your time perusing merchandise, putting those items you want into a cart.

When you have finished shopping just take your goods out of the store and within minutes a message on your smart phone itemizes your purchases and how much your credit card has been charged.

Brick and mortar retailing isn’t dead, but the rapid pace of change is impacting personnel, space and inventory requirements. Where will it all end? No one is predicting that all shopping centers will be shuttered, however many big box retailers will close and repurposed to smaller special boutiques,

for those who enjoy the experience of shopping, or for offices or apartments.

Local merchants might enjoy some advantages if they mix the technology and personal relationships.

Are we forcing these changes or just trying to adapt to them? There are moments when I wistfully want to return to simpler times, but we cannot stand in the path of change. We must adapt.

Pender FEMA office relocates in Burgaw The disaster recovery center in Pender County is moving to a new location at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 16. The new location is Pender County Agricultural Building Auditorium, 801 S. Walker St. Burgaw. The center will be open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. until further notice North Carolina Emergency Management and FEMA will open additional centers in affected counties in the coming days.

The centers offer in-person support to individuals

and businesses in counties included in the North Carolina federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Florence.

Representatives from the state, FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and other organizations are at the centers to explain available assistance programs and help connect survivors with resources that best match their recovery needs.

Disaster survivors can visit any of the centers for assistance. Use the FEMA app, ReadyNC app, or visit

FEMA.gov/DRC to view other locations.

Homeowners, renters and businesses should register for disaster assistance before visiting a recovery center. Topsail gets first ever win over Laney on last play field goal

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer There were 2.9 seconds remaining on the game clock when Topsail’s firstyear junior placekicker Jose Orellano lined up to attempt a 40-yard field goal – by far the longest attempt in his young career, especially with the game on the line – and there was a lot of nervous people at Laney’s Holiday Stadium Friday night.

Laney led Topsail 20-19 so everything both teams had worked for over the course of the first 47minues, 57.1-seconds of the game was riding on Orellano’s right leg. On the Topsail sideline, thoughts varied.

Pirate linebacker Noah Schiefelbein said he honestly didn’t think Orellano could make it, Noah LaValle (20 carries, 130 yards) told his teammates to cross their arms and pray, and even Orellano said he was scared. But Topsail Coach Wayne Inman summed it better than anyone.

“He’s never done that in a game before and I think that was a blessing,” Inman said. “He didn’t know how to put pressure on himself in that type of situation. It was a good snap and a good hold, and that gave him a chance to put it through.”

And put it through Orellano did from 40-yards out, right down the middle, and just over the crossbar to move the Pirates to 6-0 to start the season for the first time in school history in a dramatic 22-20 MidEastern 3A/4A Conference football game. It was the first time in school history Topsail has beaten Laney.

“I don’t think Topsail has ever opened 6-0, at least not in the modern day and not playing the competition we are seeing,” Inman said. “I don’t know how the rest of the season will turn out but I think, now, when you play Topsail you have to show up and beat them. I don’t think you can show up and just beat Topsail anymore, and that was our

In My Opinion When I sit down to write a story on a football game or a column or even an athlete spotlight I try and do the very best that I can. It’s my job. I get paid for it. When a school teacher shows up to work and enters the classroom, they are determined to make a difference in each and every Childs life through their job. They get paid for it.

It’s their job. They have prepared for it and they try and do the best job that they can. They take their job seriously. I take my job seriously. I work hard at my trade.

I witnessed what I believe to be the worst officiated high school football game of my 20year career of covering high school sports last Wednesday night at Dixon High School. I am not saying that the officials were favoring either team. They were just plain bad. Incompetent is the word that comes to mind.

I saw many calls that were not made. I saw holds that were committed right in front of an official overlooked. I am not talking about marginal calls either. I am talking about blatant penalties.

The call that took the proverbial cake occurred when a Dixon Bulldog was flagged for roughing the passer. Patriot quarterback Bryson Stewart got rid of the ball. The

Then you tack the 15 yards onto the end of the play. When asked, the official said he was trying to put his whistle in his mouth when he accidentally blew it. The official had the whistle in his mouth before the play.

He made the mistake and did not own it.

I understand that officials make mistakes.

They miss calls. However, misinterpretations of calls is just not being prepared. No, it is just not being qualified. I had a parent tell me that it seemed as if the more it rained the worse they got.

I won’t touch that with a 10-foot pole. I believe it is time that these officials are held responsible for their incompetent ways.

One bad call can be the difference between a team making the playoffs or sitting home. Let’s get it right. The kids deserve it.

“We came out a little flat in the first half,” said Trask Head Coach Johnathan Taylor. “We had a few penalties where we just lost our focus. It was the same thing there at

I tell you though, sometimes you need a game like this to see what your made of. I think we’ve really begun to turn the corner. We didn’t’ panic and we found a way to win. I’m proud of the way our guys fought.

The area high school soccer teams are slowly but surely getting back on the pitch. Last week the Pender Patriots and Heide Trask Titans each got one game in while Topsail was in action as well.

My buddy Lee Wagner covered the Pirate kickers last week and wrote,” Amidst the switching of games due to the threat of Hurricane Michael, Topsail managed to get in two games last week, but the results were not favorable ones.

Tuesday the Pirates (3-4-0, 1-2) fell 2-1 on the road at Ashley (5-5-1, 2-1).

Senior Greg Stirrat, in his fourth year on the varsity scored his first career goal in the 75th minute to make it a close game after the Pirates fell behind 2-0. Senior Justin Lashin assisted on the goal, while junior Alex Hornthal recorded six saves in goal.

Wednesday (moved up a day due to Michael) brought a trip to Laney and a 1-0 loss to the Buccaneers (8-4-0, 2-1). Hornthal had four saves for Topsail.

The schedule has been revised due to the storms with five games remaining

on the regular season schedule, starting with a home match this past Tuesday (Oct. 16) against Hoggard (6-2-0, 3-0), followed by a Thursday (Oct. 18) match at home against West Brunswick (7-4-0, 0-2).

The Pender Patriot kickers played one match last week and came away with a 6-3 win at East Carteret. Eduardo Rivera scored three goals to pace the Patriots while senior Jose Morales found the back of the net twice.

Dennis Bautista also scored for the Patriots.

Pender is now 6-4 overall and 1-1 in Coastal 8 play. They were at Croatan on Monday and were scheduled to play at Trask on Wednesday.

The schedule is subject to change due to several postponements.

The Heide Trask Titan soccer team played a Dixon team that is currently tied for first in the Coastal 8 Conference and came away with a 7-1 loss. Rodrigo Perez scored the Titans only goal with an assist from Justin Eaves.

Trask (2-7-1/1-1), was at Southwest Onslow on Monday and at home verse Pender on Wednesday.

Lady Pirates take big step to securing conference top 3A spot

By Lee Wagner Post & Voice Sports Writer “It’s said the big-time players make big plays in the big games,” was first cited in print March 14, 1988 in the Blytheville (Ar.) Courier News, indicating that the saying had been established by that time.

The saying means that

sports superstar players prove their greatness by making great players in important games. The line usually said after as “big-time player” has just proved is or her worth in that “big game.”

The volleyball game between Topsail and New Hanover last Thursday showed that both teams

have some “big-time players,” with the Lady Pirates showcasing a plethora of that type of athlete.

Junior Gia Marinelli knocked down 15 kills to spearhead a 50-kill effort that saw six girls top the five kill mark, senior Ashley Hardee (21) and junior Julia Sullivan (20) combined for 41 assists,

and senior Rena Marrotta (25), junior Madison Lofton (18), Sullivan (14), and senior Abby Miner (11) all contributed to a remarkable total of 81 digs as Topsail defeated New Hanover 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 21-25, 25-15) in a key 3A matchup in the Mid-Eastern 3A/4A Conference in Hampstead.

Hanover (7-5) are tied for third place overall in the conference with 5-3 marks.

But the Lady Pirates are now 4-0 in the race for the top 3A seed out of the conference in the upcoming NCHSAAA 3A state playoffs, while the Lady Wildcats are 3-1.

“I told the girls that this was probably the most

important game for us by far,” Topsail Coach Hill Pearsall said. “It was 3A competition and it was a home game and you want to win the home games whenever possible.

Pender County Pigskin Preview

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer This week will be a challenging one for the Pender County schools. All three will play two games in one week. All of these games will be conference affairs.

With the first game of the week being on Tuesday, it will be impossible for the Post-Voice to preview these games as the paper will be printed on Tuesday.

Therefore, we will preview Friday nights games.

4OPSAIL HOSTS 7EST Brunswick The Pirates made the rest of the Mideastern Conference take notice last week when they beat Laney for the first time in school history. After that win, the Pirates were 6-0

overall and 2-0 in the conference standings. They played Hoggard on Tuesday Night. Those results were not available.

The Trojans have struggled this year with their only win being over Socastee South Carolina.

That being said, this is a conference game with major implications. Both of these schools are 3A in the split conference. This is a must win.

Every team that Topsail faces must prepare for the vaunted Pirate running attack led by junior Noah Lavalle. However, this is no one trick pony. Junior quarterback Cody Wallis is on fire. He has thrown nine touchdown passes without an interception.

Last week he threw for 159 yards and a touchdown.

The Pirate defense might be the most improved unit on the team.

They will bend but not break.

Even with the success throwing the ball, Topsail is a run first team. Look

for Lavalle to get his 150 yards with Bam Bam Barris and Hayden Walsh also making their mark. Just when the Trojans decide to load the box and stop the run Wallis will air it out. West Brunswick has trouble scoring points, scoring over 10 points just once in five games. Make it just once in six games.

The Pirates earn the very important win. The score: Topsail 31 – West Brunswick 7

Trask hosts Dixon The Titans will be coming off of the most important game of the season, a Tuesday night affair with Richlands. If memory serves me right, the Wildcats beat Trask at home

last year. That loss very well may have knocked the Titans out of the playoffs. One note of interest, Trask was without their number one and number two quarterbacks before the game started and ended up with a junior varsity quarterback under center.

Richlands got the healthy version on Tuesday night.

The result was not available at print time.

Dixon ran away from an undermanned Pender squad last week. They will have trouble doing that to the Titans. this defensive unit has the best set of linebackers in the conference along with a vastly improving defensive front.

The achilles heel for the unit is its pass defense.

The Titan offense is averaging over 400 yards rushing over the last four games. Johnson and senior Zion Cruse along with a trio of juniors run behind a small but effective line.

Johnson has become very efficient at making the right read as is evident

in the reduction of carries per game. This makes the Titan offense very hard to stop let alone slow down.

Johnson gets his and Cruse runs for miles. The defense will hold the Bulldogs in check for most of the night. Dixon was riding high following their performance against Pender. It’s time to be brought down a notch or three.

Trask wins it. The score: Trask 41 – Dixon 12.

Pender hosts East Carteret The Patriots played Lejeune early in the week.

That game should have been a win for the thin Patriots. However, playing two games in a week means that the Patriots will come into the Friday night contest fatigued.

East Carteret gave Trask a run for their money late in the contest. Until then the Titan defense played them well. Meanwhile the Patriot defense could not stop or even slow down Dixon.

East has one of the biggest backs in the conference in 6-4 230-pound Jashawn Embry. Trask coach Johnathan Taylor said he was a handful.

Pender is beginning to throw the ball more. Junior quarterback Bryson Stewart can throw the ball if given time. Wide out Mihkel Henry is his favorite target.

Lavell Henry runs the ball hard and can make defenders miss. It all comes down to the Patriot o-line.

The middle of the Patriot defense is the weak point. East will give the ball to Embry and he will run roughshod over the Patriot defense. This is another tough matchup for the Pats. The score: East Carteret 47 – Pender 14.

As the area slowly makes progress in recovering from Hurricane Florence, the sports action recovers as well. However, with so many of our neighbors still hurting and without a home, many teams are shorthanded.

The Pender soccer team beat East Carteret last week behind three goals from Eduardo Rivera. *OSE -ORALES scored two goals as well.

Topsail had three girls qualify for the 3A regional tennis tournament last Tuesday at the conference’s tournament at Smithfield Park in Southport.

Lady Wildcat, and defending champion, Mary Davis Thompson cruised to the singles’ crown by

The Pender Patriot football team fell to Dixon last week. Lavell Henry rushed for 93 yards and scored twice in the loss while twin brother -IHKEL (ENry ran the opening kickoff back 85 yards for a score.

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer In the game of volleyball, it is said that you can’t teach size. The usual volleyball player is 5-11 or taller with long arms and the ability to jump.

However, every once in a while, a student-athlete shows up that proves that prototypical does not mean everything. For Heide Trask, that athlete is junior Brayden Smith.

Miss Smith stand around 5-3 inches tall. However, she makes up for her lack of size with her tenacious play.

Brayden seems to be in fast motion on each and every play. She has good service skills and does not mind hitting the floor in an attempt to dig a hot shot up. She is also very good at the net despite her lack of height.

Brayden has another year left at Trask.

She will be a great asset on the courts and off

Miner makes the most of her senior year

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer In a program like the Topsail Pirate volleyball program, there are very few spots open. If you are not an exceptional player with superb skills then there is little chance that you will make it. Often times it takes a couple of years before a player makes their presence known. That seems to be the case with Abby Miner.

Miss Miner has improved this year under the tutelage of Head Coach Hill Pearsall. She can often times be found on the floor diving after loose balls and is also very good at the net.

Abby is second on the team in digs and is one of the reasons that the Pirate volleyball team is in the mix for the top 3A spot in the Mideastern Conference.

It is evident that Abby Miner has made the most of her senior year at Topsail High School.

Dupalevich sets teammates up with skills

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer As a sophomore on the Pender volleyball team, Ashley Dupalevich played sparingly. She had a couple of setters ahead of her. The patient young lady waited her turn. By the time she was a junior she had earned more playing time. In fact, she was becoming a very good setter for Coach Matt Davis and the Lady Pats.

During the summer months Ashley worked hard and came into the season with a firm hold on the setters position. She has not disappointed as she has led the team in assists in every match this year.

Miss Dupalevich is no one trick pony. She serves the ball well and is a very good defensive player. She plays the back row as well as the front row with the same intensity and skill.

Ashley hopes the Pats make a deep run into the playoffs. That would give her a great send off.

Dixon Bulldogs run past Pender 54-26 in scoring shootout

By Bobby Norris Post & Voice Sports Writer Everything seemed different on Wednesday night when the winless Pender Patriot football team traveled to Dixon.

The game was being played two days early because of the threat that Hurricane Michael may visit the area.

In fact, the rain clouds were hanging heavy in the skies and inter mittent showers filled the air.

Pender opened the game with an 85-yard kickoff return by senior Mikhel Henry and the Pats were in the unfamiliar position of having the lead. The 6-0 lead was short lived However as Dixon answered with a 95-yard drive by the Bulldogs that ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and Dixon was up 7-6.

Dixon scored on their next possession and owned a 14-6 advantage. From there it was status quo with the Bulldogs cruising to a 5426 win.

Pender again answered the Bulldogs. This time it took eight plays to go 80 yards with Lavell Henry scoring his second touchdown of the game. Pender was again within one touchdown of the Onslow County Bulldogs.

The Patriots lack of depth began to show in the late stages of the game.

Dixon scored with 24.3 seconds to go in the third quarter.

They scored about two minutes later to increase their lead to 49-20. Stewart scored from eight yards out with just under seven minutes to play to end the Patriots scoring.

Lavell Henry led the Patriot offense with 93 yards rushing. He scored twice on the night. Stewart was 12 for 26 through the air for 157 yards with one inter-

ception. He had a rushing touchdown as well. The Patriot defense gave up 432 yards rushing and 517 yards of total offense on the night.

Pender is now 0-6 overall and 0-2 in Coastal 8 Conference play. They played at Lejeune on Tuesday night and was at home against East Carteret on Friday night.

“Our “D” line made some good stops and we had them well covered on passing downs,” Schiefelbein said.

“They (Laney) were pulling their guards and getting blocks up close, sometimes too much for us to handle, but we got over it. We had that big stop near the end

to give the offense a chance but, honestly, when we Jose lined up and I realized how long it was, I didn’t think he was going to make it.

Key in the win was an outstanding effort as a receiver by running back Cameron Barras, who had four catches for 86 yards, and one run for 25 yards.

The second game was tied 17 times –most of them when the Lady Pirates staged mini-comebacks from two- and three-point deficits. Things looked dire when the Lady Wildcats took a 24-23 lead late but a kill by senior Mallory George (eight kills, three digs) gave Topsail a spark.

A kill by Miner (nine kills, two aces, 11 digs, block), a n d a n u n fo rc e d N ew Hanover error put Topsail up 2-0.

New Hanover would not go home quietly, however, A 10-8 lead mushroomed into

a 19-12 advantage behind sophomores McKenzie Botbal (10 kills) and Megan Tamisca (eight kills), junior Caroline Weitheimer (21 assists), and sophomore Baykey Eavey (17 assists).

An Aliza McLathey (eight kills) gave the visitors life at 2-1.

But Topsail tightened the reins and were never really threatened in game four. An opening salvo led

by Sullivan (five kills, two aces, five points, block, 14 digs, 20 assists) – who played a marvelous allaround match – and Lofton (eight kills, ace, block, 18 digs) put the Lady Pirates up 6-2 and they never looked back. Marinelli (15 kills, four aces, four digs) had five kills in the closeout game.

“Coach said they were

our biggest competition for 3A and I think that got us motivated to play our best g ame and do well,”Marinelli said. “That was my best game in my career. I tried to find the open spots on the floor instead of just powering it, and that resulted in a lot of kills, as well. And I got a lot of really good sets from Ashlee and Julia, and that made a big difference as well.”

Also performing well was sophomore Bella Sorace (four kills, three bocks), “Coach told us that the game was very important to achieving the No., 1 seed in the conference, and we responded,” George said. “We found their weak spots and we hit them good, and everyone just

played together.

“As for me, I just knew we had to win the match and I tried to find their weak spots, and I just kept hitting them and they never caught on. Last year we lost to them three times and it feels really good to show them how we can really play.”

After Hurricane Florence scrambled the schedule a month ago, Michael stepped in last week and erased games at West and

N o r t h B r u n sw i ck l a s t week. As the playoffs approach, two games – versus Hoggard and versus Laney – were cancelled as they were against 4A teams.

The remaining regularseason schedule had Topsail at South Brunswick Tuesday (Oct. 16), at home versus North Brunswick Wednesday (Oct. 17) on Senior Night, at West Brunswick Thursday (Oct. 18), and the big rematch at New Hanover Friday (Oct. 19).

Other strong ef forts came from Aiden McGuire (seven points, three aces, kill, 13 digs), Catherine Sugden (ace, five points, eight digs), Kirsten McFadden (two kills, assist, one service point), and Addison Clark (four kills, four digs).

The Lady Pirates started a busy week Tuesday at South Brunswick. The return home Wednesday for to celebrate Senior Night against North Brunswick before hitting the road Thursday at West Brunswick and Friday at New Hanover.

Muddle school to engage Dixon High’s Lady Bulldogs and came away with a 3-0 loss. The scores were 25-19,25-7 and 25-10. The Lady Titans were without Lanie Barnhill, thought to be their best player. No other infor mation was available.

The Lady Titans are 3-6 overall and 1-4 in Coastal 8 play. The conference schedule has been modified and is still in progress. As of now the Titans were scheduled to play Lejeune at Penderlea Middle school on Monday, Pender on Tuesday and Pender again on Thursday at the same gym.

What to do about hurricane-related mold

Children, those with compromised immune systems, and anyone with asthma or lung conditions may be more seriously affected by the presence of mold. Those at a higher risk should avoid personally cleaning areas where mold is present. It is strongly advised that children not stay in buildings that are being repaired due to flood damage.

What is mold?

Mold is a natural substance found in nature that generally breaks down organic material. It also produces spores that float through the air. They are invisible to the naked eye and grow when they land on wet surfaces.

How do I know if my home has mold?

Generally, a home with mold will have a “musty�

Whether your home was filled with water or you just had a small leak in your ceiling, any lingering moisture can allow mold to grow. Exposure to mold can be a serious health issue after a major rain event like Hurricane Florence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that you should assume mold is present if an indoor area was flooded or wet for more than 24-48 hours.

Before re-occupying a home, you should ensure that any leaks or other moisture problems have been repaired, everything is completely dry, and any mold has been cleaned properly. The health risks associated with mold exposure vary by person, but mold can cause serious

odor. Mold growth may also occur in areas behind wallpaper, within pillows, inside toys, behind cupboards, within books, or other more hidden areas.

If you are concerned about mold growing in areas you cannot see, have your home tested for mold by a professional.

Why is mold a serious health hazard?

Molds produce allergens, irritants, and in some cases potentially toxic substances. When these allergens, irritants, or toxins are inhaled or touched, a reaction can occur. Some people are more sensitive to the substances mold produces.

T hose with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or other lung diseases may struggle to breathe in the presence of mold.

“I can believe it,” Jimmy said. “How big was that one Sam winged?”

“Likely 200,” Earl said.

“Down past the river bridge? Kinda big head, striped legs?” Billy asked.

The other men nodded.

“Yep. We saw it, too. We were trying to kill some of the smaller ones out before they do too much damage.

She sneaked up on us.”

The bell dinged again, and the three men turned.

The man and woman standing in the doorway obviously weren’t locals.

They wore big sunglasses, matching pink shirts, and strange looking chunky sandals. The man had long hair pulled into a bun on the back of his head. Wires ran from earbuds to the iPhones strapped to their arms. The woman wore tights, and the man wore pants that made Billy cringe.

“They ain’t from around here,” Carl said to himself.

“Hi,” the man said, trying not to look uncomfortable. “We’re lost. Our GPS said the highway was near here?”

The storekeeper smiled sadly.

“The hurricane took the highway out. You folks have to go back about a mile, then cross the big swamp.

There are detour signs.”

“Thank you.”

The couple looked around the room, and the man gulped. The woman whispered in his ear. The rain came down harder outside. Billy decided to be polite.

“You folks may as well set a spell,” he said. “We don’t get many strangers around here, but we don’t bite.”

Carl wiped the counter. It was a busy day, even for a Saturday during hunting season.

“How’d it go, Billy?” Carl the storekeeper asked. Billy shook his head.

“Not good. I had a cripple.”

“Told you to go with the high brass OO buck,” Carl said. He slid a box of the heavier shells across the counter. Billy counted out several bills. “Better give me two. And I’m going to get me a sausage dog and a drink while I’m here.”

Billy slid the boxes into his jacket pocket, pulled a cold drink from the icebox, and made his way to the hot dog and sausage dog machine. Jimmy and Earl sat at their usual places at the table. Billy nodded.

“How big?” Billy asked.

Earl stretched, sipped his coffee.

“Not g reat,” Earl said. “Around a hundred pounds.”

Billy snorted.

“Mine was 200 if it was

The couple looked at each other, and the man shrugged. They poured their coffee, and the woman wrinkled her nose, then dumped cream and sugar into the black liquid. They came over to where the hunters were sitting.

“I’m Jason, and this is Tara.” “We’re not from around here,” Tara said.

“We figured,” Jimmy said. There was an awkward moment, and Jason nodded at Billy.

“So, ah, you guys are hunters? Hunting?”

“Most everybody around here hunts nowadays,” Carl said.

“We’re really just not into guns,” Tara said. “No offense meant.”

“None taken,” Jimmy said, sipping his Coke and crunching a peanut, “but that would change if you stayed around here very long.”

“Well, I don’t know,” Jason said. “I just can’t understand sport hunting.”

The men laughed.

“This ain’t no sport,” Jimmy said. “This is survival.” Tara bristled.

“What do you mean, survival?” She pointed at the deer, boar and bear heads on the wall. “Those animals can’t hurt you. They’re gentle creatures. We need to co-exist.”

“Miss, that ain’t what we hunt,” Carl said, staring down at the blood on his fingernails. Tara followed his gaze, and her eyes widened.

“You—you murdered something today, didn’t you? How could you? Jason, we have to go!” A bolt of lightning flashed outside as

the storm freshened.

“I wouldn’t recommend it right now, Miss,” the storekeeper said. Tara fumed, but Jason tried to calm things down.

“So, ah, what do you hunt?” Carl looked at Jimmy, who nodded.

“Skeeters.”

“What?”

“Skeeters. Mosquitoes.

Bugs. Ever since the hurricane, they’ve gotten kinda big.”

“We have some big ones in the city, too,” Jason said, eying the men. He thought he was being played for a fool.

“I doubt you have them this big,” Carl said. “We killed six this morning, all 50-75 pounds.” Jason laughed.

“You guys are kidding, right?” He looked around, as the hunters shook their heads no.

Billy pulled out his phone, and thumbed through pictures of bucks, cows, hogs and bears, then found the photo he wanted.

A mosquito taller than the men around it hung from a skinning rack.

“We couldn’t figure a better way to take a picture,” he apologized. “We don’t skin and eat them. That would be weird. We have a taxidermist trying to figure how to mount them.”

“That’s fake,” Tara declared. Billy shrugged, and thumbed to another photo.

This time, he stopped at a photo where Jimmy’s son knelt beside a nine-foot mosquito with a bullet hole in the thorax. Jimmy Junior wore a big smile, and held the bug’s proboscis up off the ground.

“My boy got that one on a leading shot, about 200 yards, 20 feet in the air,” Jimmy said. “I was so proud of him.”

You have spent the late summer and early fall planting food plots, setting trail cameras and scouting. You have honed your shooting skills to the point a military sniper would admire your technique and control.

Up in the stand you see a creature that is so majestic you pause momentarily to admire its beauty before you lay the sights on the beast and gently squeeze the trigger. Yep, he is a wall hanger.

This one will be a center piece in your man cave.

Heck, your wife will likely be so impressed she will let it hang over the fireplace (as long as you let her go shopping for shoes or dresses or something girly like that, of course).

You call several hunting buddies and have them come take a gander before you field dress him. Then, you bring out the skinning knife and start your cuts.

This is where a problem could come in. You plan on putting the head on the wall, deciding to do a shoulder mount. You make a cut around the neckline. Many do not realize just how far back to make that cut. You have to be behind the front legs and shoulder for a proper shoulder mount.

I spoke with Pat Nicholson of Nicholson’s Taxidermy (Elm City) a while back about proper care with your game you intend to display. People, especially new hunters, are unaware of the care needed to take

care of the hides. Three factors spoil meat and destroy hides; heat, dirt, and moisture. Cool the animal down quickly using ice and field dressing the animal by removing the insides such as the intestines. Dry the hide by patting it down and add salt to soak up the moisture and preserve it.

Use game bags or plastic trash bags to keep dirt from the making contact with the meat and hide.

One thing I do is contact the taxidermist prior to making the cuts. Let them know what you intend on doing with the animal.

They will help you on what to do and where to do it.

If I had not spoken to both, I may have had a problem with the gator since reptiles are handled slightly different than mammals.

The North Carolina Wildlife website (ncwildlife.org) has much information on game care for the different game animals as well as a simple search with the keywords game care for field care on the internet.

“You let them get too close, there’s no time for a followup,” Jimmy said.

“I tried shooting one with a .22 the other night,” Jimmy said. “All I did was make him mad. Nancy had to bust him with her .357.”

“This is some kind of joke,” Tara insisted.

“Using that .22 rifle was the joke,” Billy said. “I won’t use anything smaller than a .30-30 myself. You gotta use enough gun.”

“So you people really shoot mosquitoes?” Jason asked, incredulous.

“We tried just leaving them alone, but after they began carrying off cows, it became a war,” Jimmy said. “I’m all about being one with nature, but when you steal a man’s stock, that’s different.”

“They’ll snatch a dog in a heartbeat, too, if they’re hungry,” Billy offered.

“I heard they cancelled recess at a school up the river the other day,” Carl said. “There were skeeters watching the kids behind the gym.”

“This is the silliest thing I have ever heard,” Tara insisted, although there was a hint of fear in her voice.

“You won’t think it silly if one finds you, Miss,” Carl said, gently.

The rain stopped, and a shaft of sunlight steamed the water in the parking lot.

“Come on. These people are playing with us.”

“Thanks for the coffee and the directions, gentlemen,” Jason said. “We need to be going. Carl cursed, and hauled a .44 Magnum from under his jacket. The other men drew pistols as well, and didn’t stop firing until the mosquito gave out a final buzz and lay still.

Carl reloaded the big revolver.

“Second time this month I’ve had to replace that window,” he grumbled.

“Where’s my mop? Billy, you got that taxidermist’s number? This one might go 250.”

Rocky Point resident turns concern into action

Like many others in the days following Hurricane Florence, Rocky Point resident Sarah Prevatte had no power or Internet access. Every once and a while, she would catch glimpses of what was happening with her friends on Facebook; but the lack of cell service kept her from being able to post comments or interact with the outside world. That’s when she began making a list of people to check on once she could connect, many who had to evacuate and whose homes had flooded. She had no idea that her three-page list would grow into something much larger than she had ever imagined.

When she finally got power, and Internet several days later, Prevatte began reaching out to people by sending them messages.

“I would look at my timeline to see how many people I knew who had to be evacuated or flooded,” began Prevatte. “I started making a list of everybody I needed to check on when I got a signal again. We went seven days without power, and then Spectrum couldn’t get out here because of the road closures.

After 10 days without being able to reach out to people, I started messaging my friends and asking what I could do to help them.

They needed clothes, so I asked around for their sizes of clothing.

First, churches started bringing me clothes, and now my shed is full of toys, and I have cribs in my kitchen. We had three but now I have one left. It blossomed very quickly.”

Since she started, Prevatte has collected clothing, tarps, blankets, pillows, masks, gloves and more. She has opened up her home for people in need to come in and shop for free. They have been coming from all over, and she has organized relief efforts that included taking two trucks to Canetuck and two trips to Whitestocking Road with supplies. Prevatte also went door to door in Currie to find out what people needed and to distribute supplies.

“Every time we have gone to these places, I have let people know that I have sorted clothes at my house if they needed them. I kind of opened the house up like a store so people can come in and get the clothes that they need. Once people found out I was doing this, they started bringing supplies here. I am able to give everything that these people need, almost like one stop shopping,” said Prevatte.

Harrelson Center in Wilmington donated cleaning supplies to the cause, and Northside Baptist brought food boxes and cases of water. Scotts Hill resident Charlie Baker has also been involved in the relief efforts by collecting and delivering items to the affected areas. He even helped arrange for portable restrooms in the Sandhills and Whitestocking Road communities that have been without running water. One thousand bars of soap were donated, as well.

Prevatte said that wakes up at 8 a.m. and goes to bed around 2 a.m., and spends the entire day collecting, organizing and distributing donations. When the quantity of items coming in became overwhelming, she asked for help from the high school. A group immediately came out to help her sort items and bag them up. She said she hasn’t kept track of how many people have come to her home in the last few weeks, but she estimates that it’s in the hundreds.

Prevatte has also been providing new underwear to those in need. She said that is one item people have consistently asked for. She laughed that by the time this is over, she’s going to know everybody in Pender County’s underwear size because she asks perfect strangers every day what size they wear.

“When people come in, I call it organized chaos. Everyone is given trash bags to use as shopping bags. They can shop and get clothes, underwear, towels, washcloths, pillows, blankets and sheet sets. It’s amazing that we have been able to help so many families. I am just thankful that we are able to do this,” said Prevatte.

Read a good psalm lately?

if we had it now, it would probably be quite different from our music today; but we have the words These great words of worship which can enrich our prayer life in church and out. The psalms are model prayers.

In the 150 psalms of the Bible, one finds every human emotion expressed from the highest exhilaration to the cruelest of thoughts (refer to Psalm 137:9). They express joy, sorrow, confession, contrition, undying faith, hope, the height of love, the breadth of grace. They praise God, creation, the king, the land, blessings and most of all the power presence and the providence of God. They are a literature rich in theology and literally filled to the brim with faith.

It was a common thing in the Jewish tradition for the people to memorized the psalms from their youth. The Old Testament is shot through with references to the psalms. Jewish quoted psalms as well as Old testament scripture.

Perhaps the highest example is his words on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.� It is not, as so many think, a cry of despair; it is Jesus referring to Psalm 22. The psalm begins with a sense of God’s absence and moves to a song of

Psalm 150:6 I was sitting in a group of people some years ago, 25 to be exact, planning a special Educational Event for the Presbyterian churches in our region.

I was suggesting that we bring in, as a keynote speaker, a friend of mine who had built a significant following by advocating the singing and preaching of the psalms in the church.

One of the people on the planning team, a professor at a nearby seminary, said with some dismay and a bit of bravado, “nobody preaches the psalms anymore, they are just devotional material.�

nbook of 1955 was the last Presbyterian hymnbook to include psalms as responsive readings though some of the psalm paraphrases persisted in later books.

The last two Presbyterian books have made an effort to bring back psalms but it has not made much of a stir.

The psalms seem lost on the contemporary church and its worship by and large. The Anglican church still uses psalms here and there, but by in large the psalms are ignored. Which makes what Deitrich Bonhoeffer said of the psalms in the 1940â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all the more interesting. In his small book The Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible he wrote, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whenever the Psalter is abandoned, an incom-

praise. The psalm became Jesus renewal of faith in Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goodness even on the cross.

Psalms have been at the heart of many religious movements down through the ages. The Monastic movement set psalms at the heart of their life.

Even today, you can go to a monastery and their worship is filled with sung and recited psalms.

John Calvin, one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century said that the church should only sing scripture and psalms were among Calvinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite texts. The reformation churches sang psalms.

Later as the Reformation made it way to Scotland, the Scottish church sang metrical psalms, psalm text set to metrical tunes.

An example would be The Lord of Love My Shepherd is, Psalm 23. Years later, Isaac Watts developed the psalm paraphrase, a hymn based on a psalm text. The most famous of these is perhaps, Joy to the World.

Contrary to popular belief, Joy to the World is not a Christmas song, it is a paraphrase of Psalm 98 by Watts.

Contributing Writer Candied roasted tomatoes 2 pounds ripe, mediumsized tomatoes (plum or Roma tomatoes will not have as much taste as regular tomatoes) 1 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 2-3 teaspoons Kosher salt or coarse salt Ground black pepper Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Cut tomatoes in half crosswise and lay them out on a baking sheet with the cut side facing up. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re using large tomatoes cut them into 4-8 wedges depending on their size.

Drizzle a good amount of olive oil over them. Sprinkle the coarse salt and some ground black pepper over the tops. Then sprinkle the sugar on top. Roast in oven for 4-5 hours until they are shriveling up but are still oily and juicy. Remove and

He was born Nov. 1, 1928 in Kershaw County, S.C., son of the late Charlie and Estelle Hopkins Hinson.

He is survived by two sons, Charles Hinson and wife Beth of Wilmington, Daniel Hinson and wife Carol of Burgaw; grandchildren, Nicholas Hinson, Patrick and Dalyn Smith and Kevin and Rebecca Smith, Leanna Clark, Meredith and Ashley Dupalevich; great grandchildren, Reagan, Brantley, Ryanne and Hallie Smith; a brother, Homer Hinson of Camden, S.C. and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Carolyn Rhodes Hinson; brothers, C. L. Hinson and William Hinson; and sisters, Mary Alice McCaskill and Mildred Maness.

Boots retired from Sumter Builders after working 49 years. He worked his way through the ranks and became superintendent over eastern North Carolina. He was a member of Stag Park and Burgaw Hunting Club for many years. He loved to deer hunt, fox hunt, fish and be outside. Boots was a charter member of Westview United Methodist Church.

The family received friends Friday Oct.12, 2018 at Harrellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Funeral Home from 6-7:30 p.m.

Funeral services were held Saturday Oct. 13, 2018 at Westview UMC at 1 p.m.

Pastor Fred Roberts officiated. Burial followed at Riverview Memorial Park.

let them cool. Transfer to a glass dish and pour the oil from the pan over them.

Let them stay at room temperature uncovered for 3-4 hours to have the flavors mellow. Leave the oil on the tomatoes when storing. To serve, drain the oil off and eat them at room temperature Chocolate cake with chocolate icing and walnuts with raspberry filling Make three layers in eight-inch round cake pans or a round tube pan (cut into three layers) 2Âź cups unbleached allpurpose flour 1ž cups granulated sugar 2/3 cup butter, softened 2 large eggs, room temperture ž cup buttermilk (or one cup milk with one tablespoon white vinegar) ½ cup water 1 teaspoon baking powder ž teaspoon baking soda Pinch of salt 1 teaspoon almond flavoring 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled Pre-spray three eightinch round cake pans and dust with flour (If you use some cocoa for dusting you wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get the white surfaces on the baked cake.) Set aside. Heat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl with an electric mixer beat togeth-

er eggs, butter, and sugar.

Add milk, and water. Beat in melted and cooled unsweetened chocolate. Stir in vanilla extract.

In another bowl whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until evenly distributed.

Gradually beat flour mixture into chocolate mixture, beating until completely mixed. Then beat on medium to high for 3 minutes. Pour into prepared cake pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool on wire racks for 10 minutes; remove from pans. Cool completely on wire racks.

Then frost.

Chocolate frosting 2/3 cup cocoa (I like Hersheyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s) ½ cup butter (one stick), softened 2½to 3 cups confectionersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sugar 1/3 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract In a saucepan melt butter and stir in cocoa. Add vanilla, stir in. Alternately add powdered sugar and milk, whisking to make frosting into a spreading consistency, Add small amounts of additional milk if needed. Makes about two cups of frosting.

Raspberry filling For quick preparation use a jar of prepared rasp-

berry jam. For an added treat thinly frost between the layers with chocolate frosting before using the raspberry filling then add over the top of frosting for each layer..

2 10-ounce bags of frozen raspberries, thawed ½ cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch Puree raspberries in a food processor or blender.

Press the puree through a hand strainer to remove the seeds. Heat the puree in a small saucepan adding sugar and cornstarch, stirring continuously until mixture boils. It should thicken quickly, remove and set aside to cool.

Spread raspberry filling, reserve a 1/3 cup for top garnish, between cake layers. Assemble layers and frost outside of cake, sides first. Do not frost the top yet. Hold the filled layers between your hands and carefully roll frosted side, the outer edge of the cake, into the chopped walnuts which are on a large piece of waxed paper.

Place right side up on a cake plate.

Frost top of cake with chocolate icing. Place whole walnut halves in a circle around the top outside edge of the cake for garnish. In the center in a four-inch circle add raspberry filling (optional) for a tasty decoration.

Bernice Herring Rowe Our long good bye is now over. Bernice Herring Rowe, age 78, was called home Oct. 10, 2018 after an extended battle with Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Disease. Bernice was born at home in Sampson County April 23, 1940, the daughter of the late Eudie â&#x20AC;&#x153;Teddyâ&#x20AC;? and Bettie Emeline Herring of Wilmington.

Ber nice graduated from New Hanover High School in 1958 and worked at France Neckwear in Wilmington. Growing up she spent summers helping relatives on family farms in Sampson County and always said she would never marry a farmer.

In 1961 she mar ried Leslie C. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sonnyâ&#x20AC;? Rowe and they moved to Currie shortly after and began farming, much to her surprise. They spent the next 50 years farming and raising five children (two sets of twins) in Pender County. Bernice could often be found working at the familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s roadside produce stand on U.S. Hwy. 421 and later in Rocky Point.

After semi-retirement, she enjoyed time spent with family, reading, shopping with her keen fashion sense and eye for a bargain and lunches with her Red Hat ladies.

Our mother was a beautiful woman on the outside, but for those lucky enough to truly know her you discovered she was even more beautiful on the inside.

She was a kind and loving wife, mother and sister. She had a strong faith and was truly devoted to her family. She was a master baby whisperer and phenomenal

She was born Nov. 22, 1949 in Easton, Penn. and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Leah Kauffman Bickert.

Gary Alvin Stevens BURGAW -- Gary Alvin Stevens, age 73 of Burgaw, passed away Wednesday Oct. 10, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Dec. 22, 1944

in Troy Ohio, son of the late Russell and Marie Shook Stevens He is survived by his wife Phyllis Charles Stevens and two sons.

Gary was a veteran of THE 6IETNAM 7AR SERVING his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps.

A memorial service is planned at a later date in Ohio.

Constitutional Amendment protecting the right of the people to hunt, fish, and harvest wildlife.

Constitutional amendment to strengthen protections for victims of crime; to establish certain absolute basic rights for victims; and to ensure the enforcement of these rights.

Constitutional amendment to reduce the income tax rate in North Carolina to a maximum allowable rate of seven percent (7%).

Constitutional amendment to require voters to provide photo identification before voting in person.

Constitutional amendment to change the process for filling judicial vacancies that occur between judicial elections from a process in which the Governor has sole appointment power to a process in which the people of the State nominate individuals to fill vacancies by way of a commission comprised of appointees made by the judicial, executive, and legislative branches charged with making recommendations to the legislature as to which nominees are deemed qualified; then the legislature will recommend at least two nominees to the Governor via legislative action not subject to gubernatorial veto; and the Governor will appoint judges from among these nominees.
