Topsail Beach residents will be facing a two-cent increase in property taxes for the upcoming fiscal year. The Board of Commissioners in a 4-1 vote with Commissioner Julian Bone casting the single no vote, adopted a two-cent hike, increasing the property tax rate from 29 cents per $100 of property valuation to 31 cents per $100 valuation. The 2016- 2017 budget maintains the current 12 cents per $100 valuation for the town’s Beach, Inlet and Sound (BIS) Maintenance fund. The remaining 19 cents per $100 of assessed value will be funneled into the general fund for ongoing town expenses. There was discussion about the increase with Commissioner Linda Stipe reminding property owners in attendance that the board voted down a recommended two-cent tax increase in 2015.
The Annual Currie Community Parade will be held June 25 at the corner of Hwy. 210 and Bell-Williams Rd. in Currie. “With projects and ongoing expenses I think its absolute necessity that we have to have this tax increase.” Stipe said. Commissioner Steve Smith said the tax increase pertains to services the town provides to property owners. He highlighted several ongoing town services, including streetlights along Anderson Boulevard. “Do we want streetlights on along Anderson Boulevard? If we don’t want streetlights then maybe we can save some money. There is no fat in this budget, the increase is necessary for quality of life, what we are used to and it’s tough to find it,” he said. Mayor Howard Braxton explained the tax increase. “Even though it was an imminent necessity, our town has not raised the tax rate in the past several years. This is the bare minimum, it is time we do something, we can’t continue at the lower rate,” said Braxton The newly adopted budget will go into effect July 1.

ers law suit leveled against the Town of Emerald Isle regarding beach and access rights nearly 15 years ago, may have permanent impact for all beach towns in North Carolina including Topsail Island. Emerald Isle homeowners Greg and Diane Nies have petitioned the North Carolina Supreme Court to hear
their argument that ongoing beach nourishment projects have devalued their and other homeowner’s property values from 2005 to the present. Emerald Isle has contacted Pender County beach town governments including the Town of Topsail Beach, asking them to co-sign with Emerald Isle on the ongoing lawsuit.
