Surf City town board

Board hears comments on zoning change

From Staff Reports The Surf City Town Council met April 2 for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting, A public hearing was held on efforts to rezone property at 220 J.H. Batts Road. This .8 acre property, which currently sports a double wide home and two single wide homes, is owned by the Newsome family and is presently for sale. The property is currently zoned as Rural/Agricultural, and the Newsome family requested the planning board rezone the property to mixed use. The planning board, which is

tasked with determining whether or not the rezoning is consistent with the town’s land use plan, and whether or not there is a reasonable public policy basis for rezoning, recommended approval of the rezoning. While Newsome is no longer chair man of the planning board, the rezoning created a small mixed use zone sandwiched between a large rural/agricultural zone and an extended commercial zone The council voted to approve the rezoning. Louis Bourgault puts out more baskets of beautiful strawberries at Carol’s Farm on U.S. 17 in Hampstead Sunday. A young customer (left) carries her basket of berries. This may be the last year for Carol Sue Strawberries at their Hwy. 17 location. The new Hampstead Bypass will take the farm’s land and the company will be forced to move. The DOT is in the process of surveying and appraising the property.

The Surf City Soundside Park was awash in pink Saturday morning for the kickoff of the ninth annual Reel Housewives of Topsail Island (RHOTI) bike ride and fundraiser. Founder and Surf City local Annette Cox Emy had always admired the beauty of Topsail Island and riding her bike along the 26mile stretch of Topsail coastline had been sitting idly on her bucket list for too long. A s s h e a n d s eve r a l friends gathered for lunch one after noon, Annette asked if they would be interested in riding the island with her. Soon after, their conversation tur ned to assisting a friend recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Almost immediately, the two ideas merged and RHOTI was born. Founded in 2010, the Reel Housewives of Topsail

Annual bike ride benefits cancer survivors

Island is a non-profit organization, led by Annette and a five-member board of directors, which uses funds raised from the annual bicycle ride to support local breast cancer patients and survivors. The 26.2-mile ride takes place every April as local businesses host lunches and registration events throughout the month of March. These businesses, along with members of the community, loan bikes, provide water and fruit for participants along the ride, donate gifts for a silent auction and assist with monetary donations. This year’s event was

bittersweet with the passing of Annette’s father, Daniel Cox, a week before the opening ceremony. As she welcomed participants and thanked local businesses for their support, Annette wore her father’s RHOTI hat, a token of the pride he felt for her efforts to make the lives of others a bit easier. With g randdaughter Kana Cauthen by her side, Annette proudly leads the procession of riders each year as they make this incredible journey. In its infancy, the first RHOTI bike ride garnered 42 participants and raised $2,800, which provided financial support for a local breast cancer survivor and her family. Every year, these numbers continue to increase. Last year’s bike ride generated $81,000 as 550 riders made this trek. With funds directly benefitting local breast cancer patients and survivors, this orga-

nization has paid for rent, provided Christmas gifts

More than 50 years in Burgaw By Lori Kirkpatrick Post & Voice Staff Writer Walter “Ray Rivenbark, known also as Razor Ray of Ideal Barber Shop in Burgaw, recently renovated his storefront. In the process, he acquired a new barber pole and awning, so he decided to donate the old barber pole to the Pender County Museum. Along with the donation, he included a brief history of the shop and explained a little about the history of barbering. Rivenbark has been a barber for 56 years, 53 of which he has spent in

Burgaw at Ideal Barber Shop. He had originally planned to go to school to be a draftsman until he bumped into a friend of his from high school who was getting ready to attend barber school. He told Rivenbark if he would go with him, he would pay for gas in his car and for his travel expenses. Rivenbark applied, and about a week later he found out he was accepted into the class. “I started Feb. 18, 1963, began Rivenbark. “The school was nine months and I graduated Oct. 10, 1963. I had found a job in Henderson, and I was dating Edna Rae Carr from
