An important item to note when building a business online, or any website for that matter, are backlinks. Backlinks are links to your site on other sites, forums, directories, etc. Backlinks help push your website to the top of search engines. But the key is that the links have to be coming from quality sources. Getting a backlink on a cat food website for your personal training videos online store won't do you any good. However, getting a backlink on a personal trainer's website or on a Gym's website to that same store, will fare much better in the eyes of search engine spiders. So how do you get backlinks to your website? There are a number of ways, all of which require you to be proactive. I have outlined some key focus items to get your website on track to having many great high quality backlinks. Article Marketing Post an article on article directory sites such as EzineArticles, ArticlesBase, and GoArticles. To be effective, this should be done daily, or at least a few times a week. Each of these sites allow you to add your bio with a link back to your website or blog. So with every article you write and publish, that's another backlink to your site coming from a highly ranked article directory. Social Bookmarking Some of the top social bookmarking websites are Digg, Delicious and StumbleUpon amongst many others. Add your website to as many social bookmarking sites as you can. Pretty soon you will run out of social bookmarking sites to add your website to, so start to bookmark your articles with these sites! This will push your articles to the top, thus allowing for more eyes to read the article and increase the possibility of them clicking on your website link at the bottom of your article. Be sure to have your link on your Twitter and Facebook page as well. Website Directories Adding your website to website directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo are a must for any website. These are sites with high page ranks and credibility with most search engines. Website directories are basically the yellow pages of websites on the World Wide Web. Forums Join forums in your industry/niche. Post frequently, and reply often! You are allowed a "signature" where you can include your website and blog address. Blog Commenting Find blogs in your niche and post comments often. Your link is usually displayed with your comment depending on the blog platform. Press Releases You would use this less often, but occasionally run a press release about your website.
Link Exchanges Offer to exchange links with websites similar to yours. Make sure it is not a link farm type website, but a quality website compatible with yours. RSS Feeds Encourage your visitors or blog readers to subscribe to your RSS feed. The RSS feeds contain a link back to your site as it syndicates your content. These are by far the most widely used techniques to help get backlinks to your website. Of course links are not everything, but they do play a major role in the search engine optimization of your website and your website's authority online. If you have a great website or blog, people will just naturally start linking to it. With time, your site can be a top listed site on many search engines.
