St. Cloud Approves New Speed Detection Systems in School Zones: Alarming Data Reveals 3,701 Violations in Just Three Days
On Thursday night, the St. Cloud City Council approved a new ordinance allowing the installation of speed detection systems in school zones. According to Police Chief Doug Goerke, these systems aim to “increase public awareness of school zone safety, reduce speeding, and ultimately improve overall safety.”
Chief Goerke presented data to the Council showing that speed measurements were taken in seven school zones across the city over three consecutive school days, from January 30 to February 1. During school zone hours, with the flashing beacons active, 3,701 speeding violations were recorded. An additional 1,125 violations occurred outside of school zone hours when the beacons were not flashing. Some of the findings were particularly surprising, such as the 1,262 potential violations near St. Cloud Elementary School on Budinger during active school zone hours.
“The data is unbelievable,” said Council Member Shawn Fletcher. “This solution is almost guaranteed to save a life.”
Council Member Kolby Urban agreed. “Some of those numbers were staggering to see,” Urban said. “The safety of the students and the crossing guards is a top priority.”

AAA Issues Safety Alert for Florida Drivers as Students Return to School
AAA is advising Florida drivers to be extra cautious as students head back to school on Monday in and around Osceola County. Expect heavier traffic, particularly in school zones and near bus stops. Drivers should allow for extra time in their commutes and avoid speeding or using handheld devices in school zones, where such activities are illegal.
Recent AAA survey data highlights that many Floridians typically drive through school zones or pass bus stops. Increased awareness and safety measures are crucial to protect both drivers and pedestrians, especially children who are at a higher risk of traffic accidents.
“Get ready for heavier traffic than normal, especially at first, since a lot of parents like to drive their kids to campus during the first few days back,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “It would be a good idea to budget an extra half hour for your morning commute. This is important, because drivers who are running late are more likely to speed and take unnecessary risks while behind the wheel. That endangers everyone on the roadway.”

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.
Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.
