SW IN Chamber honors 2015 Business, Teacher, Young Professional of the Year By Pam Robinson The Southwest Indiana Chamber’s annual Report to the Posey County Business Community Dinner was held on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Each year the Posey County Alliance presents three awards, Posey County Business of the Year, Teacher/Administrator of the Year, and Young Professional of the Year. The Posey County community nominates deserving individuals for each, and the winners are selected by an award committee. The 2015 Posey County Business of the Year was presented to SABIC. This award honors
a business that is involved in the Posey County Community, has made a noticeable impact in terms of job creation and leadership, among other qualities. SABIC is highly involved in the Posey County Community with more than 1,000 hours of volunteer work donated each year by their employees. SABIC encourages their employees to make a difference in their community. SABIC is to be commended for the role they play in the local economy and their desire to make a significant contribution to the Posey County community. The Posey County Teacher/Administrator of the Year was presented to Dana Taylor, director of Vocal Music at Mount Vernon Senior High School. This award honors a licensed teacher or administrator who inspires students and demonstrates leadership in educational activities. Taylor has been the Director of Vocal Music for twenty-six years and holds a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master of Music Degree in Choral Conducting from Indiana University. Taylor conveys passion and enthusiasm for his students, not only in his instruction during the day but also in the endless hours he contributes to education in the evenings and on weekends. The Posey County Young Professional of the Year is Matthew Nix, owner of Carl A. Nix Welding. This award honors a young professional who is among the area’s future leaders and has been in the professional environment for at least two years. Matthew is a fifth-generation owner of Nix Welding and has taken this business from a three-person family company to a corporation with over twenty-five local employees. He purchased Tri-County Equipment in Poseyville after learning of its closure, saving several employees from unemployment. Matthew Nix always thinks of himself last after his team, company, and family.

Airman Estes graduates from basic training Air Force Airman Corey S. Estes graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn
four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Estes is the son of Barbara J. Estes and Paul A. Goodman, grandson of Dorothy Estes, and nephew of Judith and Jim Estes, all of Mount Vernon, Ind. He is a 2011 graduate of Mount Vernon Senior High School, Mount Vernon, Ind.

Indiana DCS to host Child Abuse Presention event April 28 April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and in Posey County a special event will take place at Brittlebank Park on April 28, 2015 from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. to bring child advocates together to highlight prevention techniques. Statewide, the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is working with local Prevent Child Abuse Indiana councils, court-appointed special advocates (CASAs) as well as other child advocacy groups and local officials, to unite families, neighbors, professionals and policy-makers in the concerted effort to identify and address the issues that lead to abuse or neglect. Statewide, there are currently over 17,000 children being served by DCS, which includes 91 children in Posey County. Governor Mike Pence proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Indiana, and Lieutenant Governor, Sue Ellspermann kicked off the month with a special ceremony and the planting of a pinwheels garden on the south lawn of the Indiana Statehouse. At 3 p.m. on April 28, an event will take place at Brittlebank Park in Mount Vernon to spread community awareness of helpful resources and ways to prevent abuse and neglect of children. There will also be activities for children and treats for the family. Several community agencies will be present to provide information on family resources. Poseyville Kiwanis Club Egg Hunt On April 4, 2015 the Kiwanis Club of Poseyville held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. Everyone had a good time and went home with a lot of eggs and prizes. There were four age groups. The Kiwanis Club sponsors two prize eggs in each group. Zero to three were awarded two stuffed bunnies, four and five also awarded two stuffed bunnies, six and seven were awarded one $3 egg and one $5 egg, and eight to 10 also awarded one $3 egg and one $5 egg.
