SHAPING SOUTHSEA SEAFRONT

SUMMER OF FREE EVENTS, FREE SWIMMING & SEAFRONT IMPROVEMENTS

THE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND saw tens of thousands of visitors and residents descend on Southsea seafront for a weekend of free music and entertainment. Events over the weekend included the 18th Portsmouth International Kite Festival, a dog show on Castle Field and free live music concerts held at the bandstand, all supported by your local Lib Dem-run City Council. Over the weekend your local Lib Dem team surveyed over 2,000 local residents and visitors to get their views on the seafront as well as giving away many free balloons and stickers to the kids! This follows on from the ‘Sea Change’ consultation organised by local Liberal Democrat MP Mike Hancock and students from Portsmouth University.

BETTER PAY FOR OUR TROOPS! FOLLOWING THE SHOCKING NEWS that our troops could be better off stacking shelves in supermarkets than fighting for their country, local Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock has backed a campaign launched today by Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg for better pay for our armed forces. This increase would cost only 1% of the defence budget.

Mike Hancock said: “Our soldiers and service personnel do a difficult, demanding and dangerous job. And it is clear that there is widespread dissatisfaction over pay. I can’t understand why the Government values so poorly the difficult work that our armed forces do – especially as that may include putting their lives on the line for our country.”

RENTS GO DOWN Because we are sensitive to the economic difficulties of some residents, the Liberal Democrat cabinet member for housing on Portsmouth City Council has decided to reduce the amount council tenants in council houses and on council owned mobile home parks pay in rent.
