Music Education Hub Update Welcome to the first Portsmouth Hub Newsletter! It is excellent to receive contributions and updates from so many of our Hub Partners and also to hear reports of how different organisations are already working so effectively and co-operatively together. As you are aware, the National Music Plan, The Importance of Music, was published on November 25th 2011. Following this publication, organisations are able to apply for funding for music education hubs. The funds for music education hubs will be awarded following an open application process run by Arts Council England (ACE) who will be responsible for monitoring and assessing the hubs and reporting to Ministers. The DfE expects the funding to ‘supplement and draw-in local and national funding for music - from local authorities, cultural organisations, businesses, trusts, foundations and philanthropists.’ Arts Council England states that: ‘We expect music education hubs to involve a range of partnerships including strategic, delivery and information sharing partnerships and many others, depending on local circumstances, need and the objectives of the music education hub.” The Hub funding must be used to deliver a range of core provision for every child and young person. Hubs must: Ensure that every child aged 5-18 has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument (other than voice) through whole-class ensemble teaching programmes for ideally a year (but for a minimum of a term) of weekly tuition on the same instrument Provide opportunities to play in ensembles and to perform from an early stage Ensure that clear progression routes are available and affordable to all young people Develop a singing strategy to ensure that every pupil sings regularly and that choirs and other vocal ensembles are available in the area. The DfE expects that most of the hubs will be able to take on the following ‘extension’ roles, with the additional funding which can include contributions in time, services or money from Hub partners, businesses, national funding organisations: Offer CPD to school staff, particularly in supporting schools to deliver music in the curriculum (see funding). Provide an instrument loan service, with discounts or free provision for those on low incomes Provide access to large scale and / or high quality music experiences for pupils, working with professional musicians and / or venues. This may include undertaking work to publicise the opportunities available to schools, parents/carers and students. Portsmouth Music Service is actively engaged in submitting an application to the Arts Council so that the work that is already being undertaken in schools and with young people across the city can continue to thrive.

Hampshire Area Guitar Orchestra

Hampshire Area Guitar Orchestra - Charity concert for The Rowans Hospice On Thursday March 15th, the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) are playing at St Nicholas, Wickham to raise funds for The Rowans Hospice. You probably haven't heard a guitar orchestra before, because there are under a dozen in the UK. It's not just an ensemble - HAGO plays four sizes of classical guitar, giving a really unusual sound, like massed harps, and performs repertoire not normally ever heard on classical guitar - from Renaissance to The Beatles via Classical, TV & Radio themes and much more. The concert mixes music of all styles, and is totally informal, lighthearted, and suitable for all ages. For tickets in advance send an SAE and cheque, payable to The Rowans Hospice, to Mrs Hemingway-Rice, Wilmots Bungalow, Mill Lane, Wickham, Hampshire, PO1 75AN. Mark your envelope “HAGO”. For directions to the venue, more about HAGO, video clips and more, visit www.hago.org.uk. Date: Venue: Tickets:

St John’s Chapel Choir St John’s Chapel Choir in Cambridge The award-winning St John’s Chapel Choir spent five days of the October half-term touring the university city of Cambridge. During the tour, which started on the 24 October, they sung the ancient service of Choral Evensong in Ely Cathedral and Peterborough Cathedral – two of England’s ‘hidden gems’. In addition they performed their acclaimed Angelic Voices concert (a mix of sacred and secular music) in St Edmundsbury Cathedral and also in Clare College Chapel, Cambridge (the home to one of England’s best choirs). The boys stayed in a school in Cambridge and were accompanied by the Choir Prefects and teaching staff. Some parents also made the trip to see their sons perform. St John’s pupil Adam Watts, aged 13, has been on nine tours and sang in 25 different cathedrals. Adam was recently selected as Head Chorister so led the choir for the first time in Cambridge. Adam comments, “Being Head Chorister is an absolutely amazing feeling. Having the responsibility to lead the choir in so many cathedrals will be a great honour.” Keith Ellison, Head of Music at St John’s College, comments. “As a Portsmouth School, we are very proud that these choristers are representing our City in so many places across the country. The choir receive so many wonderful comments about their discipline and their singing; they work very hard and deserve all the accolades that come their way.” Events Guildford Cathedral St Paul’s Cathedral, London: Romsey Abbey Chichester Cathedral Portchester Castle Salisbury Cathedral York Minster Choir tour to Italy
