Stockton’s Very Own Gnome? By Kinsey Eaton When Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce, Doug Wilhoit was asked if we could make a garden gnome replica of him his jaw about dropped. He laughed and said, “Oh my gee! Really? What’s next?” However, when Doug found out he could promote three charities, there were no questions asked, he wanted to become a garden gnome. Doug’s favorite quote, which is written on the back of his one of a kind baseball card, is “If you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem.” Doug said, “I have to listen to my own quote on my baseball card. Yeah, it is making fun of me, but it is for the greater good, and that’s all that matters.” When Doug was asked if he thought it looked like him he responded, “Well I guess so, it is pretty ugly.” Mr. Wilhoit jokes, “If it scares animals and children, they got it right.” Doug Wilhoit, eloquently known as Mr. Stockton to many Stocktonians, has been a part of the local community his entire life. He works on business side of Stockton for the Chamber of Commerce but he is also passionate about making Stockton a better community. One of Doug’s favorite events is the Asparagus Festival. Doug says, “He is proud to say they now have 129 non-profit organizations that participate in the event.” He loves an event that sheds a positive light on the Stockton Community and that is why he is excited for his gnome night. The Ports have teamed up with three non-profit organizations that will be promoted at the ballpark the night of June 30th, The Child Abuse Prevention Council, Stockton Shelter for the Homeless, and the Women’s Center. Mr. Wilhoit says, “These three agencies are very dear to my heart.” He cannot wait for the Ports fans to learn about the organizations. The gnomes do represent Doug Wilhoit, but he does not seem to want all the attention on him. He strives for community involvement and hopes the gnome giveaway brings a large crowd to Banner Island Ballpark. He is looking forward to the fans getting something more out of the night than just a garden gnome. Mr. Wilhoit said, “I want people to learn it is important to step up to the plate.” He hopes they learn about these non-profit organizations and people realize that they can help them and the entire community. On June 30th Doug Wilhoit will become a part an exclusive club of people like Dallas Braden and Brian Wilson. Doug says, “I think I will put my gnome on my desk next to Braden (bobble-belly) and Wilson (garden gnome).” Many of Wilhoit’s friends however,

have gotten a kick out of the idea of their friend being turned into a gnome. Doug said, “Some of my friends have said they are going to keep the gnome in their front yard where their dog does its business. Where ever fans choose to keep it, the first 1,000 through the gate will go home with their very own garden gnome. Whether a Doug Wilhoit gnome motivates you or learning about ways you can contribute to the organizations, we hope Saturday is a great night for everyone at the Ballpark.
