Welcome to Autumn/Winter 2019 – Volume 3 The World’s Premier Golf Destinations

As publisher of GMé – a business magazine focusing on all aspects of golf management – I have worked within the golf industry for the past 22 years, and, in that time, have been fortunate to have travelled the world visiting some spectacular golf courses. I have always held the belief that a great golf experience needs to extend beyond the 18 holes of golf, and, far too often, I have visited a ‘Top 100’ golf course, only to discover that, aside from the course itself, the experience really wasn’t anything special. No meet-and-greet, no customer service and no lasting memory to take away from the visit, except a distant memory of how well you did, or did not, play. Many golfers – irrespective of ability – aspire to play some of the greatest golf courses around the world, and has been created in order to guarantee that every destination featured within this portfolio delivers an exceptional customer experience, one truly warranting the term ‘world-class’. All 22 clubs featured within the AW’19 portfolio – including newcomers Adare Manor, Ireland; Château du Coudreceau, France, and Royal Bled, Slovenia – have been personally evaluated to ensure they offer a ‘world-class’ visitor experience, and on each page you will find an info panel detailing all of the elements that are included when you visit. Membership to is limited to premier destinations that meet the strict entry criteria, with invitations to join extended to only a handful of ‘world-class’ golf facilities each year.

The Visitor Experience The definition of a ‘world-class’ golf facility The World’s Premier Golf Destinations

To meet the strict entry criteria of, prospective member clubs must demonstrate uncompromising standards across four key areas of their golf operation, while demonstrating it delivers a visitor experience which is truly ‘world-class’. Course Presentation The starter should provide tees, pin positions, yardage books and pace-of-play information on the first tee, while the condition of the course should be pristine, with tees, greens, surrounds and fairways maintained to a high standard. Whenever possible, the starter should recommend preferred tee boxes based on ability, allowing guests of all standards the opportunity to play well and enjoy their round. Practice Facilities Practice facilities need to be of the highest standard, and must include a range, short-game area with putting green, and the ability – climate permitting – of hitting range balls from grass as opposed to mats, or artificial tee lines. Range balls should ideally be stacked in pyramids, and only quality practice balls used. If a ball dispenser is in operation, all tokens must be included as part of the green fee. Clubhouse & Locker Rooms The clubhouse needs to be warm and welcoming, while at the same time functional, with guests greeted with sincerity before being invited to make use of the changing facilities. The locker room should include the use of premium-grade lockers, with complimentary toiletries and light-refreshments on offer, while the pro shop would be expected to be stocked with quality apparel brands from the world of golf. Food & Beverage Superb cuisine paired with fine wines should be on the menu for any dining experience after a round of golf, coupled with a selection of local beers and low-alcohol alternatives, all served in a relaxed and stylish atmosphere. On-course, and at the halfway house, a range of snacks and hot and cold beverages should be available, with a refreshment cart on-course in hotter climates.

Le Golf National Paris, France Situated on the outskirts of Versailles near Paris, Le Golf National has been the host venue to the French Open for the past 28 years, and in September 2018 the Albatros course hosted the 42nd Ryder Cup which saw Europe triumph over the United States by 17½ to 10½. Furthermore, the Parisian Venue will also host the golf competition of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, becoming the first venue in the world to host both prestigious events. Designed by Hubert Chesneau with Robert Von Hagge as a consultant, the Albatros Course was imagined to one-day fulfil the ambition to host prestigious international tournaments, and allies the traditional feel of a links course with the expansive features of a modern stadium course. Slick greens, vast undulating fairways, water hazards and links-style bunkers define its outstanding layout, with the spectacular finishing four holes surrounded by water. The second course at Le Golf National is the Aigle, a links-style course which draws its inspiration from Scotland, and on-site facilities include two driving ranges including a large short-game area. Visitors wishing to enjoy the ‘Ryder Cup Experience’ at Le Golf National, have the option of staying on-site at the four-star Novotel overlooking the finishing holes of the Albatros Course, or the luxurious surroundings of the Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace in the heart of historic Versailles. Located just 10km from the famous Palace of Versailles and 25km away from the Eiffel Tower in the south west of Paris, Le Golf National is a fine destination to enjoy the French Art de Vivre, by combining a memorable golf experience with the fantastic sights of Paris – the most emblematic and romantic city in the world.

Adare Manor Co. Limerick, Ireland Masterfully designed, magnificently maintained, and perfectly set within the glorious estate of one of Europe’s most spectacular manor house hotels, The Golf Course at Adare Manor is ready to take its place among the best championship courses in the world, and will be the host venue for the 2026 Ryder Cup. The recent reconstruction, designed by Tom Fazio, has taken what was already an award-winning Robert Trent Jones-designed course and transformed it into a parkland paradise befitting a country in the top tier of global golfing destinations. The new course has been created in harmony with the outstanding natural beauty of its surroundings: lush, softly rolling terrain, mature treescaping, and the sweeping banks of the River Maigue flow through the landscape. Despite only opening for play following its reconstruction in April 2018, The Golf Course at Adare Manor has the quality and infrastructure in place to host the world’s largest golf tournaments. Off the course, a cherished heritage of Irish hospitality has been distilled into the spirit of welcome you feel within these walls. Adare Manor was a labour of love from the very start, created to delight, astonish and impress. That legacy is alive in the manor house itself: sumptuously restored, brimming with Gothic splendour, and perfectly appointed in every detail. As you roam the 840 acres of pristine parkland, play your way through the magnificent golf course, and sound the depths of relaxation in the spa, you will start to understand the soul of Adare Manor. It’s prestige without pretence and magic without nonsense.

Anahita Beau Champ, Mauritius Situated within a very large 530-acre property on the eastern coast of Mauritius, between the hilly interior and the sparkling Indian Ocean, the golf course at Anahita Golf & Spa Resort was constructed to USGA standard in 2008 by Ernie Els in association with Ciel Properties. The Ernie Els-designed course makes the most of its tropical setting, and is set out on generously proportioned fairways on a former sugar plantation with two distinct loops of nine, incorporating some old drystone walls and a links-like stream into the layout. Backed by the lush Bamboo mountains and fringed by the crystal-clear lagoon, it has six stunning ocean-front holes with the final three fairways hugging the rugged coastline back to the clubhouse culminating in a final shot that is among the most spectacular in the world. “One of the strengths of this golf course is we were able to maximise the visual impact of the surrounding scenery, but at the same time preserve the coastline’s natural beauty,” commented Ernie. “The hole routings move in and out of the trees, along the water, and back, giving players great variety and magnificent views of the ocean.” Anahita Golf Club first hosted the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open (ABMO) in 2016 and most recently in November 2018 as the golfing world’s first Tri-sanctioned tournament endorsed by the European Tour, Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour. Golf is complimentary (excluding golf cart) and unlimited for all Anahita Golf and Spa Resort and Four Seasons Hotel guests.

Castle Stuart Inverness, Scotland This stunning championship course at Castle Stuart opened in 2009, and already has a remarkable history hosting some of the world’s leading golfers in the European Tour’s Scottish Open on four occasions. The spectacular setting overlooking the Moray Firth offers visitors a memorable seascape punctuated with local landmarks such as the Kessock Bridge, Chanonry Lighthouse, Fort George and Ben Wyvis. Designed by Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse, the Links Course at Castle Stuart is regarded as a model for modern golf course architecture, being fun, engaging and playable for golfers of all abilities, whilst challenging for the very best. At Castle Stuart, nature bequeathed an opportunity for a links golf course to enjoy a rich landscape texture of whins, gorse and broom, heather and marram – a landscape mosaic of rugged beauty. It is a true links experience with rumpled fairways, offering changes in lie and stance; partially revetted, natural bunkers and infinity edge greens that allow the scenery and key landmarks to be put on display. The course has won plaudits from some of golf’s leading players and writers, including Phil Mickelson – winner of the 2013 Scottish Open at Castle Stuart and one week later the The Open championship – who said: “It should almost be a prerequisite to play Castle Stuart before you are allowed to design golf courses.” Three years later, when the Scottish Open returned to Castle Stuart, Mickleson added: “I love coming back here. I love Castle Stuart. I’ve loved the golf course even before I played well in 2013.”

La Reserva Sotogrande, Spain Opened in 2003, the Cabell B. Robinson-designed championship course has quickly built its reputation as one of the premium golf and leisure resorts in Europe. Carved into the Andalusian hillside with natural vistas in every direction, La Reserva hosted the European Tour’s NH Collection Open in 2014, and has become a firm favourite with golfers worldwide and is considered a must-play for any golfer visiting the area. Highlighted by generous, sweeping fairways and large, undulating greens, La Reserva Club is always in exceptional condition and will test every aspect of even the most accomplished golfer’s game. The opening hole is as picturesque as any in Europe, with an elevated tee overlooking a wide fairway that doglegs sharply to the left, with a stream short of the green awaiting any poorly struck approaches. Water features on no less than seven holes, most noticeably all the way along the left of the signature par-4, 8th hole, while elevation changes across the Costa del Sol valleys place a particular emphasis on club selection throughout the round. La Reserva features a set of iconic and varied par-3s which offer a distinctly different challenge depending on which tees you play from. The 18th winds its way up to the stunning clubhouse which offers spectacular views of both the Mediterranean Sea and mountains of La Gran Reserva, as well as contemporary Andalusian cuisine in L’Olive Restaurant. A remarkable selection of amenities including a tennis pavilion and breathtaking new leisure development, The Beach enhances the visitor experience, bringing the best of the vibrant Sotogrande lifestyle into a serene and elegant setting. The club also boasts outstanding practice facilities including former Ryder Cup star Manuel Piñero’s academy and a pristine grass driving range.

Valderrama Sotogrande, Spain Real Club Valderrama has been consistently ranked as the number 1 golf club in continental Europe since the late 80s, and has been described by top pros and leading golf writers as the best in Europe, if not the world. It is not an easy course – nor was it intended to be – and was designed so as to call forth thought and precision for every shot. The course was designed in 1974 by Robert Trent Jones – one of the great golf course architects of his era – and was originally known as Las Aves, or Sotogrande New. In 1984, Jaime Ortiz-Patiño acquired the golf course and committed to bringing the course to an extraordinary level, never before seen in Europe, with Trent Jones agreeing to redesign his original layout of ten years earlier. The pair shared a common aim to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike. The course was renamed Valderrama after the ancient estate on which the land is situated, and in 1988, began hosting the Volvo Masters, the flagship tournament of the PGA European Tour. In 1997 Valderrama famously hosted the 32nd Ryder Cup – won by Europe and captained by Severiano Ballesteros – and went on to host the first two editions of the World Golf Championships which were won by Tiger Woods and Mike Weir respectively. Since 2010, Valderrama has hosted the Andalucía Masters, one of the European Tour’s most prestigious tournaments. Located in Sotogrande, just a few miles north of Gibraltar, Valderrama is a private members’ club with a limited number of tee times offered for visitors.

Dubai Creek Dubai, United Arab Emirates Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is a golfer’s paradise in the heart of Dubai. The resort incorporates an 18-hole championship golf course, 9-hole par3 course, golf academy, seven restaurants and bars, the 225-bedroom Park Hyatt Dubai, 92 residential executive villas and a 121-berth marina. Undulating alongside the Dubai Creek and capped by its iconic and stylish clubhouse, the course at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is a refreshingly different golfing experience. The par-71 course measures 6,370 metres off the back tees, and is a memorable journey from the first tee to the 18th green. The manicured fairways are pristine, undulating, and demarcated by mounds, date and palm trees, but also by water. Apart from the Creek, which comes into play on four holes, several lakes add to the beauty and difficulty of the course. Multiple tees ensure that golfers of all calibre enjoy their day out on the course. While length off the tee is certainly advantageous, emphasis should always be on accuracy – especially on approach shots – with many greens multi-tiered with subtle borrows. Dubai Creek sets up for a thrilling finale to a round with two closing par fours, with both holes guarded by the Creek which runs the entire length of the left side of both fairways. While the 17th can be conquered with some smart play, the 18th requires two well struck shots to find the putting surface in regulation. There is water on the left and a long bunker on the right, beyond which is water again. A good drive will still leave you with a long iron into the multi-tiered and sloping green, which is guarded at the front and right by a body of water.

Emirates Dubai, United Arab Emirates Emirates Golf Club boasts two of Dubai’s finest must-play golf courses; The Majlis and The Faldo Course, which both combine the natural rolling desert terrain for a serious test of golf. The club also offers a 9-hole par 3 course, golf academy and a choice of three restaurants. The par-72, 6,676 metre Majlis championship course plays host to the annual PGA European Tour sanctioned Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. Sculptured around the desert dunes by architect Karl Litten, The Majlis was the first grass course to be built in the Middle East. One of the most challenging holes on the course is the par-4, dogleg 8th. Stroke index three and playing a full 397 metres, it has the unusual distinction of playing uphill and requires a long, well-directed drive to leave a reasonable second shot to its small, undulating green where the dreaded three-putt is always a threat. The Majlis has developed a worthy reputation worldwide as a testing layout for even the best golfers. This ‘desert miracle’ features hundreds of indigenous species of flora and fauna, beautifully complemented by meandering fairways and seven fresh and saltwater lakes. Emirates Golf Club’s second championship golf course was opened in 1996 and was christened The Wadi, taken from the Arabic word for valley. Redesigned in 2005 by golf legend and six-time major winner Nick Faldo, the course now combines a stunning visual design with the nuances and challenges of any championship course in just the right measure, providing visitors with an exceptionally enjoyable world-class golfing experience.

Celtic Manor Newport, Wales Set in 2,000 acres of parkland at the gateway to Wales, the Celtic Manor Resort boasts three championship golf courses including the Twenty Ten, the stage for Europe’s dramatic Ryder Cup victory in that year. No golf fan will ever forget Graeme McDowell with his arms aloft after holing his crucial birdie putt on the 16th hole, or the rapturous scenes of celebration on the next green when he sealed the win that reclaimed the trophy by a single point. The spectacular Twenty Ten Course was purpose-built for the drama of team matchplay with water featuring on nine of the 18 holes and risk and reward challenges lurking around every corner. From lacing up your shoes at the same lockers which still carry the name plaques of the Ryder Cup players, to a post-round drink on the clubhouse balcony where Team Europe celebrated victory by spraying champagne over their supporters, there is a special atmosphere to every moment on the Twenty Ten Course. Like the Twenty Ten, holes on the Roman Road and Montgomerie courses have also seen action during the 15 years that the Wales Open was staged at Celtic Manor, and both are well-manicured championship layouts in their own right. The Roman Road is also the stage for the annual Celebrity Cup event but don’t let the wonderful views over the Severn Estuary distract you from the job at hand on some tricky, and sloping greens. The apres-golf is every bit as appealing with golfers able to choose from four hotels in the Celtic Manor Collection plus ten luxury Hunter Lodges which all sleep eight people and have outdoor hot tubs with superb views over the lakes of the Twenty Ten Course.
