The Visitor Experience The definition of a ‘world-class’ golf facility The World’s Premier Golf Destinations

To meet the strict entry criteria of, prospective member clubs must demonstrate uncompromising standards across four key areas of their golf operation, while demonstrating it delivers a visitor experience which is truly ‘world-class’. Course Presentation The starter should provide tees, pin positions, yardage books and pace-of-play information on the first tee, while the condition of the course should be pristine, with tees, greens, surrounds and fairways maintained to a high standard. Whenever possible, the starter should recommend preferred tee boxes based on ability, allowing guests of all standards the opportunity to play well and enjoy their round. Practice Facilities Practice facilities need to be of the highest standard, and must include a range, short-game area with putting green, and the ability – climate permitting – of hitting range balls from grass as opposed to mats, or artificial tee lines. Range balls should ideally be stacked in pyramids, and only quality practice balls used. If a ball dispenser is in operation, all tokens must be included as part of the green fee. Clubhouse & Locker Rooms The clubhouse needs to be warm and welcoming, while at the same time functional, with guests greeted with sincerity before being invited to make use of the changing facilities. The locker room should include the use of premium-grade lockers, with complimentary toiletries and light-refreshments on offer, while the pro shop would be expected to be stocked with quality apparel brands from the world of golf. Food & Beverage Superb cuisine paired with fine wines should be on the menu for any dining experience after a round of golf, coupled with a selection of local beers and low-alcohol alternatives, all served in a relaxed and stylish atmosphere. On-course, and at the halfway house, a range of snacks and hot and cold beverages should be available, with a refreshment cart on-course in hotter climates.

Sustainable Golf On Course for a Sustainable Future The World’s Premier Golf Destinations

It is important that the term ‘world-class’ also takes into consideration the social and environmental responsibility of a product and experience, and is proud to highlight golf courses in its portfolio which have achieved the most respected and internationally-acclaimed accolade of sustainability in golf – GEO Certified®. GEO Certified® is awarded to golf facilities which credibly demonstrate their commitment to fostering nature and conserving resources – and who support their local communities – and who continually improve on an ongoing basis. The GEO Certified® distinction is assured and managed by the GEO Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and recognising sustainability in, and throughout, golf. The GEO Certified® mark is awarded in accordance with the highest credibility standard set out by ISEAL, an alliance of other trusted certification marks including Fairtrade and the Rainforest Alliance. As a sport with the deepest connections to the natural environment, golf has clear reasons to step out ahead, visibly and confidently as a sustainability leader. By doing so in a proactive manner, golf will be able to enhance its image, improve opportunities for further growth and development, and protect itself from real risks such as availability of resources, regulation and climate. As many world-class golf courses showcase, sustainability is directly connected to playing quality and the quality of the golfing experience, so it is also highly relevant to golfers, and especially the next generation, as it could be a tremendous opportunity – and potentially even a game changer for the way in which the sport is perceived, supported and enjoyed in the future. With more existing facilities, tournaments and new developments around the world becoming involved in golf’s sustainability movement, we are seeking to give credible leaders the profile they deserve, and to encourage others to join the sustainable golf community.

Castle Stuart Inverness, Scotland This stunning championship course at Castle Stuart opened in 2009, and already has a remarkable history hosting some of the world’s leading golfers in the European Tour’s Scottish Open on four occasions. The spectacular setting overlooking the Moray Firth offers visitors a memorable seascape punctuated with local landmarks such as the Kessock Bridge, Chanonry Lighthouse, Fort George and Ben Wyvis. Designed by Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse, the Links Course at Castle Stuart is regarded as a model for modern golf course architecture, being fun, engaging and playable for golfers of all abilities, whilst challenging for the very best. At Castle Stuart, nature bequeathed an opportunity for a links golf course to enjoy a rich landscape texture of whins, gorse and broom, heather and marram – a landscape mosaic of rugged beauty. It is a true links experience with rumpled fairways, offering changes in lie and stance; partially revetted, natural bunkers and infinity edge greens that allow the scenery and key landmarks to be put on display. The course has won plaudits from some of golf’s leading players and writers, including Phil Mickelson – winner of the 2013 Scottish Open at Castle Stuart and one week later the The Open championship – who said: “It should almost be a prerequisite to play Castle Stuart before you are allowed to design golf courses.” Three years later, when the Scottish Open returned to Castle Stuart, Mickleson added: “I love coming back here. I love Castle Stuart. I’ve loved the golf course even before I played well in 2013.”

Erinvale Somerset West, South Africa Erinvale is widely considered to be one of the finest golf residential estates in South Africa, with the development process starting in 1990 and completed five years later in 1995. The golf course was designed by Gary Player who said: “When I first laid eyes on Erinvale, I was struck by the incredible beauty of the farm and the potential for a golf course of world-class standards!” One of the jewels of Cape Winelands golf, Erinvale Golf Club is without doubt one of the best golf courses in South Africa. La Reserva Sotogrande, Spain Opened in 2003, the Cabell B. Robinson-designed championship course has quickly built its reputation as one of the premium golf and leisure resorts in Europe. The opening hole is as picturesque as any in Europe, with an elevated tee overlooking a wide fairway that doglegs sharply to the left, with a stream short of the green awaiting any poorly struck approaches. Dubai Creek Dubai, United Arab Emirates Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is a golfer’s paradise in the heart of Dubai. The resort incorporates an 18-hole championship golf course, 9-hole par3 course, golf academy, seven restaurants and bars, the 225-bedroom Park Hyatt Dubai, 92 residential executive villas and a 121-berth marina. Undulating alongside the Dubai Creek and capped by its iconic and stylish clubhouse, the course at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is a refreshingly different golfing experience. The par-71 course measures 6,370 metres off the back tees, and is a memorable journey from the first tee to the 18th green. The manicured fairways are pristine, undulating, and demarcated by mounds, date and palm trees, but also by water. Apart from the Creek, which comes into play on four holes, several lakes add to the beauty and difficulty of the course. Multiple tees ensure that golfers of all calibre enjoy their day out on the course. While length off the tee is certainly advantageous, emphasis should always be on accuracy – especially on approach shots – with many greens multi-tiered with subtle borrows. Dubai Creek sets up for a thrilling finale to a round with two closing par fours, with both holes guarded by the Creek which runs the entire length of the left side of both fairways. While the 17th can be conquered with some smart play, the 18th requires two well struck shots to find the putting surface in regulation. There is water on the left and a long bunker on the right, beyond which is water again. A good drive will still leave you with a long iron into the multi-tiered and sloping green, which is guarded at the front and right by a body of water.

Emirates Dubai, United Arab Emirates Emirates Golf Club boasts two of Dubai’s finest must-play golf courses; The Majlis and The Faldo Course, which both combine the natural rolling desert terrain for a serious test of golf. The club also offers a 9-hole par 3 course, golf academy and a choice of three restaurants. The par-72, 6,676 metre Majlis championship course plays host to the annual PGA European Tour sanctioned Omega Dubai Desert Classic and Omega Dubai Ladies Masters. Sculptured around the desert dunes by architect Karl Litten, The Majlis was the first grass course to be built in the Middle East. One of the most challenging holes on the course is the par-4, dogleg 8th. Stroke index three and playing a full 397 metres, it has the unusual distinction of playing uphill and requires a long, well-directed drive to leave a reasonable second shot to its small, undulating green where the dreaded three-putt is always a threat. The Majlis has developed a worthy reputation worldwide as a testing layout for even the best golfers. This ‘desert miracle’ features hundreds of indigenous species of flora and fauna, beautifully complemented by meandering fairways and seven fresh and saltwater lakes. Emirates Golf Club’s second championship golf course was opened in 1996 and was christened The Wadi, taken from the Arabic word for valley. Redesigned in 2005 by golf legend and six-time major winner Nick Faldo, the course now combines a stunning visual design with the nuances and challenges of any championship course in just the right measure, providing visitors with an exceptionally enjoyable world-class golfing experience.

Celtic Manor Newport, Wales Set in 2,000 acres of parkland at the gateway to Wales, the Celtic Manor Resort boasts three championship golf courses including the Twenty Ten, the stage for Europe’s dramatic Ryder Cup victory in that year. No golf fan will ever forget Graeme McDowell with his arms aloft after holing his crucial birdie putt on the 16th hole, or the rapturous scenes of celebration on the next green when he sealed the win that reclaimed the trophy by a single point. The spectacular Twenty Ten Course was purpose-built for the drama of team matchplay with water featuring on nine of the 18 holes and risk and reward challenges lurking around every corner. From lacing up your shoes at the same lockers which still carry the name plaques of the Ryder Cup players, to a post-round drink on the clubhouse balcony where Team Europe celebrated victory by spraying champagne over their supporters, there is a special atmosphere to every moment on the Twenty Ten Course. Like the Twenty Ten, holes on the Roman Road and Montgomerie courses have also seen action during the 15 years that the Wales Open was staged at Celtic Manor, and both are well-manicured championship layouts in their own right. The Roman Road is also the stage for the annual Celebrity Cup event but don’t let the wonderful views over the Severn Estuary distract you from the job at hand on some tricky, and sloping greens. The apres-golf is every bit as appealing with golfers able to choose from four hotels in the Celtic Manor Collection plus ten luxury Hunter Lodges which all sleep eight people and have outdoor hot tubs with superb views over the lakes of the Twenty Ten Course.
