Watchdog boss puts sights on car-park sale

“I was concerned, particularly when shown some of the correspondence, that there may be breaches of process,” Mr Brown said.

This correspondence included two letters written on the same date by a NSW Trade and Investment employee, Mayor Besseling said.

“One letter asks council for its support of the sale of the Plaza car park to Woolworths, and the other states Council’s strong support for the Woolworths proposal,” he said.

A PARLIAMENTARY inquiry will be the next step in the fight against the sale of land that has been a community asset for 60 years, if information and transparency do not transpire, an upper house politician says.

Shooters and Fishers Party NSW Legislative Council member Robert Brown is also the Chair of General Purpose Standing Committee Number 5 which oversees the compliance of NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSWDPI) with its guiding legislation.

By NIKALA SIM A ONE in fifty year flood followed by heavy rain has left a perilous walkway along the Hastings River at Wauchope.

Neighbours Yelka Mudford, Michael Connolly and Greg Elliott have united in an effort to see remediation work completed to once again make safe the walking path that follows the river along which they live.

“There was a huge flood in February 2013 – a once in 50 year occurrence,” Mr Elliott said.

“Then earlier this year there was eight inches of rain and that was it – the bank just washed away.”

The Port Macquarie-Hastings Council had spent time and money protecting the bank at Rocks Ferry and improving amenities, but the area in question was a small patch that was not protected.

“The section here where the pathway is now closed had nothing done to it and it has continued to wash away under the path,” Mr Connolly said.

A storm water pipe now sticks out some three metres over the river and the pathway has lost at least 50cm of earth beneath it, he said.

“The path has been closed since the day after the rain on April 3, 2015,” Mr Elliott said.

Join the Green Army The problem with the closure was that while it protected the community from falling into the river, it also put them in peril because people needed to walk on the road to access the next part of the reserve and walkway, Mrs Mudford said.

The trio would like to work constructively with council to fix the issue of river erosion and were seeking to establish beneficial partnerships to move the idea forward, she said.

“We will follow whatever channels we need to, to fix this problem.”

A proposal exists for the building of a boardwalk along Rocks Ferry Road at a cost of around $100,000. But this proposal had problems

of its own, Mr Elliott said, and would not solve the problem of erosion of the bank.

“I am sure if we work together we can find a solution which doesn’t necessitate the building of a new path,” he said.

Mr Connolly invited all Port MacqurarieHastings councillors to go out to Rocks Ferry to have a look at the problem and discuss potential paths to a positive solution.

“I hope people start seeing how bad is it is,” he said.

There was too much confusion and too much secrecy surrounding the expression of interest and sale processes, Port Macquarie’s Mr Tingle said.

“There is too much obfuscation and I think it is time it stopped.

“Unless we start hearing the facts and uncovering some of the processes gone on to date then I believe we must have a parliamentary inquiry into the whole process of Woolworths being the preferred candidate from the expression of interest process.”

“People of the community are entitled to know what is being done with their land,” Mr Tingle said.

MLC Robert Brown said ministers, particularly new ministers like Niall Blair, were quite often led around by the nose by department heads.

“I have every confidence that Minister Blair and local MP Leslie Williams have the interests of Port Macquarie and due process at heart,” Mr Brown said.

“I have had some preliminary discussions with Mr Blair and he has assured me he would get the facts.

“Based on the level of community concern, highlighted by 12,650 petition signatures which will be presented to parliament, I believe there needs to be a pause in the process until such time as we sit down and discuss the issues.

“This will give all parties breathing space and time to determine the next step.”

Land too valuable to be a freebie READING inside Council by Mike Cusato, he states that the sale of the Food for Less area has not been completed as yet.

The stumbling block in respect of this area is just who is the rightful owner. To my knowledge the Lands Department own the land as Crown.

The Council has had administration of the land for many years that they believe that they have a common right ownership.

Why doesn’t the Council come out and really say what they want as far as this valuable land. I believe that the Council wants the Lands Department to gift this area to the Council as a grant.

I thought I’d write one myself to reply to an anonymous letter I have received. As a journalist it is not my role to write my opinion.

It is my role though, to portray the comments and opinions of individuals in our community as clearly as I can.

I appreciate feedback because I believe when it is positive it makes

When it is less than encouraging it is an opportunity for us to consider comments and rise to the challenge presented.

I received a letter last week, which from the writing I deduce, was written by a young person.

It was in relation to a story I wrote about a young woman who did powerful things in her short time on this earth.

I did not discuss the sad story of her passing as it was not the point.

The point was she did do great things.

She did advocate for those with no power to do so for themselves.

This young woman did not just give her beliefs lip service – she walked her talk and took action to change the world for the better.

She began a charity for poor children in Africa which still provides free education, fresh water and good food.

I acknowledge the feelings of the letter writer in relation to this young woman and whoever you are I want you to know I respect what you had to say.

I suppose I wanted to write back but I couldn’t because I don’t know who you are.

So to anyone out there in the community – please never be afraid to talk to us – we are here for you and we are not afraid to learn.

Call to support Legacy

IT is a sobering fact that the suffering of war can reach far beyond battlelines and into the homes of families and loved ones of our servicemen and women.

Legacy is one of Australia’s best known charities, and was formed in the 1920s by war veterans who returned home and pledged to care for the dependants of their deceased comrades.

The Port Macquarie Hastings Legacy Club is getting ready for its annual Legacy Badge Week, to be run from August 31 to September 5 this year.

Mr Peter Bruce is the President of the Port Macquarie Hastings Legacy Club, and is eager to encourage the local community to get behind the charity’s primary fundraiser.

“Volunteers for Legacy will be selling badges, pens, and bears in major centres in the Port Macquarie Hastings area,” Mr Bruce said.

Inducted Legacy volunteers, known as ‘Legatees’ will be visiting shops and businesses throughout the region, as well as many local widows from the Legacy Laurel Club, Torchbearers for Legacy, friends of Legacy, and the Junior Legacy Group.

Local school children and the navy, army, and air force cadets will also be walking the streets during the week to sell badges and receive donations.

Local residents are encouraged to drop into the Wauchope Legacy Op Shop in Cameron Street, where donations will be accepted and Legacy purchases can be made to back the efforts of the charity in the local community.

Mr Bruce commented, “In previous years, we have received very generous support from both businesses and the public at large.

“This year we have an additional fundraiser in the form of Keith Robinson, an Army Reserve solider who has volunteered to run for Legacy in a kilt,” Mr Bruce said.

‘Kilted Keith’ as he has become known, is aiming to raise in excess of $700.00 for Legacy during its Badge Week. Mr Bruce is calling for local residents to back Keith during his various outings in the community.

Four local businesses have generously kickstarted support for Keith already, including Donovan Oates & Hannaford, Morgans Financial, Oxley Insurance Brokers, and Pivotal Business Systems. Donations can be made by contributing to a donation bucket that will travel with Keith,

as well as through the many volunteers who will be out and about during the week.

“His aim is to spend a day in Wauchope, a day in the Camden Haven area and three days in Port Macquarie during Badge Week,” Mr Bruce explained.

All funds raised will remain in the local area to assist Legacy in caring for over 600 widows and the families of Veterans who have given their health for their country.

“We at Legacy are constantly amazed by the generosity of the people of the Port MacquarieHastings area, and we do appreciate their continued support,” Mr Bruce said.

AN amazing 12-year-old has lopped her locks to raise money for children with cancer.

About three weeks ago Grace Robinson was looking through Instagram posts when she came across one from a girl her age who was being treated for cancer.

Immediately she became inspired to do something to help and decided to join Do it For Cancer.

“I was the first person to tell her I was raising money for her and she cried,” Gracie said.

“I love hearing about people’s stories and stuff like that but nobody should have to live with cancer, it is a horrible thing.

“So that is why I am going to shave my head.”

The year seven student began high school this year but is not like other girls at her school, she says, because she is definitely not popular and is on the autism spectrum.

The Mackillop College Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) student has a massive heart,

“Gracie is always reading stories about people who have suffered illnesses and making comments,” she said.

“I am so proud of her, she registered by herself and laminated posters and put them up around town – she has made a fantastic effort.”

Support from family and friends was so great that Gracie reached her fundraiser goal of $500 in

the first 24 hours, Mrs Robinson said.

The target was then raised to $1000 but Gracie secretly hopes she will be able to donate closer to $2000 for the worthy cause of cancer research.

Last Saturday night, at Finnian’s Irish Tavern, Gracie was supported by friends, family and keen onlookers when she shaved her head in solidarity with the young woman from Instagram.

Friend from St Joseph’s Regional College Bec Moss, 13, said she thought Gracie was doing something really good to help people fight cancer.

St Joseph’s Primary Rockpool student Andrew Hepburn, 11, agreed but said it was funny to see his friend with no hair.

Youngster pedals to help others

IT seems our young people are teaching us a lesson in giving.

Port Macquarie’s Kenny Holland is only 15, yet the young man has a head on him like a much older person, and a heart bigger than the town in which he lives.

School was not for him, Kenny said, and so he works at Maquarie Seafoods on Clarence Street.

“One of my support teachers dug deep for me and helped me get a job,” Kenny said.

“I am really happy and am learning lots of skills including cleaning fish, using the cash register and customer service.”

In keeping with his individual style Kenny has chosen to raise funds for cancer as he rides his bike to work, back home and about the town as he pleases.

The Great Cycle Challenge Australia is a great way for young people with a keen interest in cycling to raise money for children diagnosed with cancer, while doing what they love most.

Kenny has an app on his phone so he can log each ride and each one will add up to his goal of 100km from October 1 to 30.

Currently in training, the young man has set a modest goal of raising $250 and it would be great to see the community get behind him and raise so much more.

“I can start fundraising now while I train, but I can only log my 100km during October.”

Over 600 children in Australia are diagnosed with cancer every year, and on average three die every week.

Sadly cancer is the disease which kills the highest number of our children.

The money which Kenny raises during his Great Cycle Challenge will support the development of treatment and efforts to find a cure.

September is Save the Koala Month

‘CAN you imagine an Australia without Koalas?’

That is the image Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) is warning 128 Federal politicians about in a letter, outlining the dire state of our koala populations.

AKF Chief Executive Officer Deborah Tabart OAM, is calling on our Federal politicians to declare their support for a Koala Protection Act (KPA) by September 1, Save the Koala Month, as AKF members want to know where their representatives stand.

Ms Tabart insists a KPA specifically designed to protect vital koala habitat, is the

only way to ensure the Australian icon’s future in the wild.

“With this letter, I have also sent a number of written briefs supporting why I think the system is broken and incapable of protecting the koala – now and into the future – and why it is time for something new,” said Ms Tabart.

“The briefs are sobering to read and they pull together nearly 30 years of information into readable form,” added Ms Tabart.

Ms Tabart said the KPA is based on the American Bald Eagle Act and has been drafted by brilliant national and international legal minds.

Dig deep and support children with cancer by sponsoring 15-year-old Kenny Holland to ride 100km during October

THE achievements and contributions of the men in our community will be honoured at a special event on November 19.

The International Men’s Day evening will put the spotlight on the inspirational stories of every day men, organiser Kate Hutten said.

The idea for the event came from local group fashioned4freedom who act to raise awareness of and funds to free women from slavery.

Nineteen men have been invited to tell their stories on International Men’s Day and each week Your Local Independent will introduce them to you.

This week we tell Mal Murray’s story.

Mal (pictured) is one of 12 children and grew up in Sydney. His father was a maths teacher.

Mal graduated from Wollongong Teacher’s College in 1971 and started his career as sports master at East Hill High School.

He has since worked in high schools across NSW with his career culminating in nine years teaching within the Kariong Juvenile Correctional Centre.

His commitment to youth, sports, health, physical education and special needs is reflected in his attainment of master degrees in these fields.

Mal has also been actively involved in volunteering and fundraising for many community causes.

Mal married later in life and has no children of his own, however this has been well compensated for by his large extended family and the young people he has helped throughout his life.

How long have you lived in or around Port Macquarie?

I am blessed to be able to lay claim to being a local, having been born and raised in Port Macquarie. I have lived here most of my life, but did spend a year living in Norway as an exchange student on Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program.

What do you love the most about the Hastings?

Our local area is so rich and diverse in natural beauty. I love the fact that you can access beaches, waterways, subtropical rainforests, mountains, bushwalks, and the hinterland - all in the one day.

Where do you work and what do you love about your work?

My background and training is in the areas of social welfare and secondary teaching, and I currently work as a Student Support Officer at Hastings Secondary College – Westport Campus. Part of my role is to work with students, families, and staff to support student wellbeing in the school environment. I am able to use the skills that I have gained in both fields to have a positive impact.

What do you like least about your work?

Not a lot! It can be a bittersweet experience to work alongside some students and then have to say goodbye and good luck at the end of their journey through secondary school.

How do you start your day?

With a glorious cup of coffee! I have been dedicating some time to learning the fine art of coffee-making.

What do you do in your spare time?

I have a few interests that I like to pursue in my spare time. Apart from spending time with the family, I have a passion for writing and a keen interest in landscape and astrophotography.

What is the achievement you are most proud of?

My faith is an essential part of my life, so I would say that I am most proud of the relationship I share with Jesus. In addition, I would say that marrying my wonderful wife, Michelle, 3 years ago is a highlight for me.

clear on ‘sale’ IT’S fantastic to see that 10,000 signatures have been collected on the petition to stop the sale of the Plaza car-park to Woolworths.

It is very clear to everyone that the community does not want a big box supermarket on what is a gateway site for our CBD and foreshore.

Everyone, that is, except the Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, and her National Party colleague, Lands Minister, Niall Blair.

I suppose the huge number of signatures makes it difficult for Leslie Williams to continue to suggest that the opposition to the sale is a ‘noisy minority’.

This is surely her helicopter moment.

We should not forget that Woolworths too are far from innocent bystanders in all of this.

They are relentlessly driving ahead with their intention to buy the site and build a big box supermarket on it – in direct contradiction to the community’s wishes.

They know that their proposal does not comply with the Foreshore Plan of Management or with Council’s Development Control Plan, yet they continue to push ahead with their proposal to purchase the land and build their big concrete box.

They know that once they own the site, they can go ahead and ignore Council’s planning guidelines.

Interestingly, the Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie, stated in this newspaper in February,

2015, that the National Party has placed a high priority on ‘the implementation of measures to protect small business from the unfair practices of the major supermarket chains’.

This clearly acknowledges two things: Firstly that the major supermarket chains engage in unfair practices; and secondly, that something needs to be done about it. Clearly, Leslie Williams and her colleagues haven’t read that particular memo.

Cr Mike Cusato and I have previously called for a full Parliamentary Inquiry into this matter so these secret dealings can be made public and transparent. The need for an official Inquiry is getting stronger by the day.

The politicians who are meant to represent us seem to be representing their party instead.

The community is being left without a voice and seems powerless to stop its own land being sold off in a secret deal.

Aussie live longer, better educated AS Australians we are, on the whole, better educated and living longer than a decade ago according to the latest two-yearly national welfare report card from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

But while most Australians at all ages are doing relatively well, some members of some groups are faring less well. Some Indigenous Australians, some older Australians, and some of those who are homeless, have disability, a mental illness, or experience domestic violence, are among those who may need to draw on welfare services and payments.

The Institute’s report was released in Canberra recently by federal Social Services Minister Scott Morrison.

Acting AIHW Director Ms Kerry Flanagan said: “Our report shows that most children are doing well and that most young people are studying or working.

“Adult participation in the labour force is higher than 20 years ago, and while some people are staying at work longer, after retirement, the majority of older Australians are not using aged care services. On the other hand, we see that 1 in 37 children are receiving child protection services, around 2 million Australians, mostly women, have experienced partner violence since the age of 15, youth unemployment exceeds 13%, and there’s been little improvement in the proportion of young people who are not fully engaged in employment, education or training.”

Chit was a receipt from another era

WE bought a meal at Changi Airport, Singapore.

We paid cash, but in return we received a chit.

I hadn’t heard of chit for years, but there it was. Everybody who paid received piece of paper headed as a chit.

The word was accepted as another word for a receipt. It was in most dictionaries and I read it in A Town Like Alice, which I happened to be reading on my holidays. Okay, I’m a bit behind in my reading, but I’ll catch up one day.

I had always thought a chit was a reminder of an amount owing, and many of the dictionaries I consulted seemed to bear this out.

The Urban Dictionary described it as ‘a sum owed’.

Collins said it was: “A voucher for a sum of money owed.”

Oxford said it was ‘a short, official note recording a sum owed’.

Macquarie said the word represented ‘a voucher showing money owed for food, drink, etc’.

Merriam-Webster said a chit represented ‘a signed voucher of a small debt’, but then it added the meaningless ‘a small slip of paper with writing on it’.

The Free Dictionary said it represented ‘a sum of money owed’, but it added ‘any receipt of an

informal nature’. That was the only dictionary that used the word ‘receipt’.

Most dictionaries, in different words, said a chit was a short, official note, typically recording a sum owed.

In India, it was a memorandum of a debt not yet paid.

But in Singapore we paid in advance and so did other people. They all received a chit.

There are many words spelt as chit, mostly referring to a child, or a baby, a person ‘no better than a child’ or a small ‘insignificant’ person. I’m not sure what sort of a person would be regarded as insignificant.

The 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue defined chit as ‘an infant or baby’.

The word chit that harks back to that note I received in Singapore seems to come from Hindi, but developed in the United States and United Kingdom as a hand-written note as a reminder, or even as a scrip, but mostly as a reminder of

a debt.

The first use I could find for chit, ‘short for chitty’, came in 1785 in a comment that ‘they may know his terms by sending a chit’.

In 1879 ES Bridges in Round World said he signed the chit for drinks.

A good definition came in 1892 when the Daily News of London described the chit system: “The chit system is the very general practice of putting the name on a piece of paper for every article that is purchased instead of paying cash down.”

A person who collected the accounts was described in Peking Picnic (1932) as a chitcoolie.

The word has other meanings.

Macquarie said ‘a young person, especially an imprudent girl’. Oxford said ‘applied, contemptuously to a child, a very young child, now mostly of a girl or young woman’.

A chit fund is a kind of savings scheme practised in India.

The dictionaries I consulted said nothing about Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the 1968 film starring Dick Van Dyke.

But I’ll go with the Free Dictionary definition of chit. I know I paid the bill and the chit I received was a receipt.

Innovator a star of local Expo “ We were looking at how things could be done better

“

A REVOLUTIONARY machine driving innovation, efficiency and better outcomes for road rehabilitation will feature at the inaugural Manufacturing and Engineering Expo.

The ShoulderMaster is the result of a passionate partnership between Stabilcorp Managing Director Peta Pinson, the company’s Business Manager and engineer Mark Pilgrim, and boiler maker Peter Monahan.

The Wauchope business is contracted by local and state governments and multi-national corporations to rehabilitate roads.

“We have been in this industry for 28 years and were looking at how things could be done better,” Mrs Pinson said.

Efficiency, cost saving and safety were three areas where her super enthusiastic team put their focus, she said.

“The genesis of the idea was in February, 2014, when we scrapped a piece of machinery and turned it into what we wanted.

“We re-used some components and built the rest.”

The result was a prototype that exceeded expectations and when presented at the Civil Engineering Expo in Sydney, in May this year, generated so much interest it could have been sold thirty times over, she said.

Kempsey Shire Council was the first local government in Australia to utilise the innovative machine.

Manager Engineering Works Tony Green said the ShoulderMaster was a great advancement and provided a far more efficient method for widening road pavements than conventional means.

Wauchope business Stabilcorp is driving innovation and efficiency within its industry of road rehabilitation. It allowed very fast completion with little disruption to traffic and very little mess, he said.

The machine has won the Wauchope company a high profile innovation award for ‘taking a tank and turning it into a sports car’, Mrs Pinson said.

THIS week there is a focus on cancer research as we all dig deep to support Daffodil Day on Friday.

In recognition of this worthy cause the Hastings Cancer Trust is calling for submissions from organisations and individuals within the community for funding to do things better for cancer.

Government funding, even with the best intentions, often didn’t go far enough, trustee Dr Stephen Begby said.

The Hastings Cancer Trust helped bridge a gap, he said, by funding projects that were of benefit to cancer patients and their families here in the Hastings.

One such project had been the provision of Paxman equipment which reduced hair loss of chemotherapy patients by cooling the scalp, Dr Begby said.

Each year the trust raised funds and each September the call was put out to find projects which would put that money to the best use for local cancer patients, he said.

“The Hastings Cancer Trust has seen the generosity of the community translated into much needed funding for a range of projects, which have supported cancer patients and clinicians within our local area,” Dr Begby said.

Anyone involved in the management of cancer, or indeed community organisations that support cancer patients, cancer survivors and carers in the Hastings/Macleay region were eligible to apply, he said.

Projects might include the development of facilities, support of local research efforts, funding for the education and training of both clinicians and the community, purchase of aids

and equipment, and even provision for the specific needs of community groups.

The Hastings Cancer Trust is a tax-deductible not-for-profit charity and funds donated are administered by its trustees, who are local people.

The aim is to fund local cancer projects on the basis of their value to the community.

Applications should include a detailed explanation of the funding project with particular attention paid to how it will benefit the maximum number of people with cancer.

Partnership projects with matching funding sources will be considered favourably.

Beware phone scammers FAIR Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is warning NSW residents about scam calls purporting to be from the Australian Tax Office.

Mr Stowe said scammers are telling consumers they have a tax debt and in some cases threatening them with arrest warrants.

“Seniors are a target,” Mr Stowe said.

“Yesterday they phoned an 80-year-old resident in Tamworth and a retirement village resident in Moonbi near Tamworth.”

The call back technique is common and lures people into believing they are dealing with a legitimate government agency.

Scammers are out to harvest bank details.

School rapt in early Christmas ON Wednesday, August 19, St Columba Anglican School secondary students packed gifts and clothing into 150 Christmas Child Boxes, using funds raised during the school’s recent Columba Day Carnival.

These 150 gift-filled boxes, along with almost 100 filled boxes donated by school families, were loaded onto a trailer and delivered to the collection centre ready to be sent off overseas.

Operation Christmas Child, run by Samaritan’s Purse Charity, is the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind.

Individuals, families, churches and other groups fill empty shoeboxes with gifts of toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement. Since 1993 Samaritan’s Purse has collected and delivered more than 113 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in over 150 countries on six continents.

Shoebox gifts are collected in the United States, Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Often it is hard for children, who usually have so much, to imagine how life is for other children their own age, living in conditions vastly removed from those enjoyed in Port Macquarie.

IN August 2003, the Port Macquarie/Hastings launched possibly its most effective and controversial tourist campaign, promoting the concept that - GOD LIVES HERE. With Pastor, Paul McCarthy from McCarthy Advertising Kerry Medway created the campaign.

Paul who is a Catholic, was sitting at the beach and he was pondering the next tourism The 30-second TV commercial featured Our Central Road with shop opening campaign.

He was inspired the is concept of quotes from Genesis chapter 1, leading up to “… th promoting the Macquarie/Hastings onPort September 8 .area as and on the seventh day God rested”, with pictures a ‘Slice of Heaven’.

The slogan was launched at Panthers and of Port Macquarie and the Hastings and Camden included TV advertising, a tourism booklet and Haven appearing on the screen.

A song by Peggy Lee was played “I’m in a huge billboard at Telegraph Point.

Heaven” and the advertisement climaxed with It worked, Port Macquarie was splashed the caption … Greater Port Macquarie, Camden over the media.

Soon Port Macquarie was being talked about on National TV, the ABC News, radio and newspapers.

Of course the cynical journalists were quick to attack and ask, ”Does God only live in Port Macquarie?”

We who were being challenged were quick to respond: “Well why not, after all, we live in such a beautiful place, a slice of heaven or paradise, so why wouldn’t God live here?”

Yes, God lives here, in the beautiful creation around us and in the hearts of hundreds of God’s people.

This weekend, why not step outside and take a few moments to THANK GOD for His beautiful creation and His love for mankind.

A SHORT while ago I had a young person say to me, “GOD IS AWESOME. Is there anything God cannot do?”

My initial thought in response to this question was: “NO, there is nothing God cannot do”.

I immediately thought of a song taught to us in St Thomas Anglican Church years ago by Judy Blaxland, an Australian missionary then working in South America. The song was called, Nothing is Impossible for God. Yes, God is Awesome, He is unchanging, eternal, unlimited in power, in majesty, in knowledge, in wisdom, in love, in mercy and in holiness.

The only thing He cannot do is act contrary to His own character and nature.

For example in the Bible Titus 1:2 states that He does not lie. Because He is Holy (Isaiah 6:3 & 1 Peter 1:16) He cannot sin. Because He is just, He cannot merely overlook sin.

Because Christ paid the penalty for sin, He is now able to forgive those who will turn to Christ (Ephesians 4:32; 1 John 1:9) In an article in Christianity Today there is a list of 10 things God cannot do, taken from a book by Maise Sparks “101 Things God Can’t Do.” (Published in 1996).

Some of these things God can’t do have been listed already, but a couple that captured my attention were: God can’t get tired (Isaiah 40:28); God can’t abandon you (Deuteronomy 31:6) For me the most encouraging - God can’t stop loving you. (Jeremiah 31:3 & John 3:16).

What an awesome God we believe in. Turn to Him today through Jesus Christ.

MAKE-A-WISH Australia is calling on the Port Macquarie community to join a brand new local volunteer branch the charity plans to set up in the area.

Make-A-Wish grants the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses, giving them hope for the future, strength to face the challenges of their illness, and joy from their incredible wish experience.

Since 1985, Make-A-Wish has granted over 8000 wishes to seriously ill children, and receives new requests every day.

The organisation has the ambitious goal of granting 2000 wishes every year by 2023, and the support of volunteers will be crucial to making this happen.

Until now, volunteers from the Coffs Harbour branch looked after wishes in the Port Macquarie region, however due to an increase in wish applications in the area, Make-A-Wish would like to open a local branch in the coming months.

Make-A-Wish volunteers support the charity’s work in various ways, including meeting with very sick kids to capture their wish, hosting fundraising events and activities in the community, and also work closely with head office staff to make wishes of local kids come true.

On average, volunteers commit to a couple of hours per week to volunteering.

Make-A-Wish volunteers come in all ages and backgrounds, and include retirees, young people, full time workers, mums and dads, professionals and tradies. Anyone is welcome to apply to join the new Port Macquarie branch.

As providers of aged care services, we are acutely aware of the growing needs of those living with dementia both in our communities and in our facilities

ONE of Australia’s largest parishes, St Agnes’ Parish, has committed to becoming a dementiafriendly organisation.

Operating across service areas including aged care services, and with approximately 1000 staff and 300 volunteers, St Agnes’ Parish is the largest organisation in Port Macquarie-Hastings to have their dementia- friendly action plan given the green light by the Dementia-Friendly Action Alliance.

St Agnes’ Parish’s dementia-friendly action plan includes a commitment to fostering a partnership with Alzheimer’s Australia NSW to participate in the Dementia Mates program, which matches volunteers with people who are living with dementia to help them remain socially connected, providing a DVD educational resource with information about dementia to managers and staff across the Parish’s various entities, and using the dementia-friendly audit tool to review the physical environment of each facility starting with St Agnes’ Hostel.

St Agnes’ Parish CEO Adam Spencer said with diverse operations which include Catholic Care of the Aged facilities and retirement living, St Joseph’s Family Services, Centacare, Parish Education and Pastoral Offices, the Parish was well placed to lead dementia-friendly initiatives.

“As providers of aged care services, we are acutely aware of the growing needs of those living with dementia both in our communities and in our facilities,” Mr Spencer said. “We welcome the opportunity to do what we can across our organisation to ensure the Parish is

THE Salvation Army has launched a campaign to respond to youth homelessness and raise vital funds for centres across Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra.

The Couch Project aims to raise awareness of couch surfing, a form of hidden homelessness, by encouraging people to sleep on their couches on Saturday, 13th September 2014 and fundraise to support The Salvation Army’s youth homelessness services.

“Couch surfing is often the first unseen step in the cycle of youth homelessness,” says the Salvos’ Jason Poutawa.

“Just because a young person has a roof over their head does not mean they have stability, safety or a secure place to live.”

The Salvation Army’s youth homelessness services across Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra provide young people with the help they need to overcome adversity and build independence by offering transitional accommodation, living skills programs, education and support.

“All of our centres see the effects of couch surfing first-hand with the young people they support.”

THE Sydney Comedy Festival has hand-picked the funniest comedians from the 2015 festival and are hitting the road to bring an all-star comedy showcase right to your doorstep.

Tight comp a tipping horror NRL WRAP CASEY O’CONNOR ROUND 24 caught many tipsters off guard and after a weekend of upsets there are three sides level pegging on 36 points at the top of the table in one of the closest runs for the minor premiership in years.

The Roosters have snatched the top of the table spot on differential points ahead of Brisbane and Townsville. Souths despite their loss to Canterbury round out the top four narrowly edging out Cronulla who are on equal points with the Bunnies.

As the battles at the top of the leader board become strategic in terms of the finals there is cause for concern among some teams after a weekend of attrition. Injuries to key players are destined to have an impact in the final two games of the season and for some teams the finals.

The Broncos and defending premiers get the penultimate round underway on Thursday night at Allianz.

The Bunnies had the wood on Brisbane at their last meeting but injury will keep Greg Inglis out of this game after minor surgery on his knee earlier this week. It is a big blow for the defending premiers.

Despite their loss to the Roosters the Broncos came through last weekend’s game with no major injuries and in better shape than most clubs. The young Broncos players had a good taste of what lies ahead of them in coming weeks and fought back in the second half of the game to almost snatch a win.

Brisbane are favourites to win here and should get the prize.

The Sea Eagles were simply awful against

Parramatta and have drawn the wrath of their coach and fans alike. Toovey who has nothing to lose has openly said Manly do not deserve a spot in the eight and after their performance in round 24 not many would disagree. Adding to their woes hooker Matt Balin looks to have played his final game for Manly after suffering a knee injury.

The Roosters have now won 10 on the trot and despite the loss of power house Jared WaereaHargreaves and Mitchell Pearce, showed why they are the form team of the competition. They have further concerns with Michael Jennings set to sit this week out after being charged for a high shot on Darius Boyd. Hard to see Manly bouncing back here – should be no 11 for the Roosters.

The Eels and Cronulla go head to head at Pirtek on Saturday and after round 24 you cannot discount the Eels. True, Manly made their win look better than it should have but they have been the spoilers this season and at home they are capable of wounding the Sharks.

After five straight losses Parra were playing for no more than pride and made not only Manly look silly but also a raft of tipsters.

The Sharks notched up another win to hold on to fifth spot but were unconvincing despite the 40-18 score line. The Sharks will probably grab a win here but the Eels could leave them red faced if they do not improve on their sloppy play.

The Knights are another team playing for pride and they showed plenty of ticker when they dealt a lack lustre Melbourne a blow to any premiership aspirations. With the worst defensive record in the competition Newcastle were given little hope against the normally clinical Storm. The Knights rose to the occasion and looked far from cellar dwellers. This week however they will be tested against the Bulldogs who are rolling nicely towards

the final series. Josh Reynolds is a week away from returning for the Dogs but their performance against the Bunnies sent an ominous warning to premiership hopefuls. The Dogs should edge closer to a top four finish with a win here.

Melbourne were out of sorts against the Knights.

They have now lost to three of the bottom placed sides this season. The Cowboys had a decisive win over the Warriors but it came at a cost with injuries to James Tamou and Michael Morgan. Despite the injuries they can win against Melbourne but must overcome their slow starts.

The Tigers and Warriors do battle in the first of the Sunday matches and the result is a raffle. The Warriors were given a masterclass in attack by JT and the Cowboys last weekend and the Tigers again had no answers against a less-than-convincing Cronulla attack. Perhaps the Tigers. Not a game likely to break any attendance records.

The Titans host the Dragons on Sunday afternoon after their win over Canberra pulled them off the bottom of the table. They lost Captain Greg Bird in the opening play of the game but still managed to wound the Raiders. Kane Elgey was instrumental in the win and the Titans will be looking for another big game from him this week. The Dragons are clinging to their spot in the eight after a win over the Panthers.

A must win here for the Dragons but it is a real danger game and if the Titans can repeat their performance against the Raiders might just spoil the party.

Round 24 wraps up at GIO stadium with the Raiders hosting the Panthers. Both teams are out of finals contention and playing for pride. The Panthers were a little more convincing in their loss to the Dragons last week and in a game that will fail to inspire many, I think the visitors might steal the points.

BOWLS ROUND UP NORTH HAVEN WANDERERS

NEARLY 100 bowlers took to the greens at North Haven to compete for the annual Friendly competition for the Riversplate Shield, last Sunday.

It was very gratifying for the organisers to see the function so well attended.

The bowlers played triples until 12pm and then adjourned for drinks and a lovely baked lunch.

After this it was announced that the winners for 2015 were Harrington.

This was greeted with much cheering and talk of getting it back next year.

Our next event will be the three day visit to the Newcastle area on September 19, 20 and 21.

We are looking for a few more numbers for the bus.

THURSDAY bowls were well attended, Cathy Pater a visitor from Victoria was welcomed by ourPresident Diane Parry.

The rink winners on the day were Hilary Smith, Heather Tindall, Janice Fleming and Jenny Crisp. Runner-up were Florence Hungerford, Joy Elford and Pauline Hanneybell.

Tuesday Mixed Bowls was played in good weather and everyone enjoyed their game.

Rink winners were Diane Parry, Peter Pater, Des Kranz and Margaret Coombes.

Sunday afternoon mixed bowls saw an increase in numbers and was played in windy conditions, but still enjoyed by the bowlers who participated, rink winners were Bettina Danius, Yvonne Hansell and Neville Burley.

LAST Tuesday in the semifinal of the Minor Pairs Ann Butlin (skip) and Roz Hancox defeated Anna Innes (skip) and Judy Dewson.

Ann and Roz led all the way and though Anna and Judy narrowed the gap, they left their run a little too late.

In the other semifinal game played on Saturday Lyn Watson and Coral Miller (skip) defeated Anne Todd and Mary Simmonds in a close game where the lead seesawed over the course of the match. Well played to all the players.

Tuesday’s rink winners were Barbara Roberson, Bev McIntosh and Wendy Byers, whilst the consolation prize went to Trudy Aafjes, Lorraine Burtenshaw and Judi Blackler.

Mary Simmonds won Consistency Skins this month with a wonderful bowl finishing just inches short of the jack.

The Quarterly Meeting on Tuesday, September 1 is going to be a big one with a revision of the House Rules, including dress policy and Life Membership and as this is the first Tuesday of the month, it is also Golden Girls Morning Tea and Trade Table Day. Wednesday, September 2 is the monthly Classic Pairs, entry is $15 per person for three games of 14 ends, open to anyone.

The Draw has been done for the major/minor pairs and the first round is on or before Saturday, September 5.

We say good bye to a very special lady this week, Elva Thornton our ‘Bowl for Others’ representative for the last ten years, is leaving us to live near her family at Erina.

Elva has brightened up our lives at the club for many years – on stage in the Xmas Concerts, her hilarious annual reports on BFO and witty stories and jokes.

She joined our club 23 years ago, when she retired up here with Barry, her husband.

In Sydney she and Barry practically ran their club and so when they moved to Lake Cathie they opted out of holding positions but were always at hand to help when needed.

Elva played and skipped for many years and made numerous finals but, though her name is on the board a couple of times, she was often the bridesmaid rather than the bride.

One of her claims to fame is many years ago beating Daphne Shaw in a Westport Triples Carnival. On the second day of the carnival it rained and the games were called off after five ends.

However Daphne killed two of those five ends and so over the three remaining ends Elva’s team won by one shot and ended up getting 2nd Place in the Carnival!

So good bye, good luck and thanks for all the happy memories.

IN the semi-finals of the Triples Championships on Saturday the team of George Ganic, Gary Russell and Geoff Worley looked good early on but Steve Grimshaw, Glenn ‘Two NNs’ Tiley and Des Hancox fought back to win comfortably.

In the other semi-final game it was a close finish but Stewart ‘Magpie’ Hodges, Dave Pateman and Frank Ryan triumphed over Ross Fuller, Brian Sloggett and David Brims.

The finals will be played this week and it will be a good game to watch.

Ivan Bozanic, Brian Scorgie (Vis) and Ron Morris managed to run off with the money for the winning rink on Monday while on Thursday it was John Jarvis, George Ganic and Gary Russell with Ross Stephens, John Murton and Des Hancox taking the runner-up prize.

PORT MACQUARIE PANTHERS MEN’S

IN the two semi-finals in the Minor Singles played on Saturday afternoon, Tony Mallia 31 defeated Brian King 24 with Kevin Lowther 31 defeating Jim Cradock 18.

In the 1 game played in the minor pairs Paul Crosariol 29 defeated Phil Ross 6.

The final in the minor singles and next round games in the minor pairs will be carded for the weekend of September 5 and 6 - check the board for details and members are advised that nominations are now open for our 2015 Triples championships.

Paul Sloan and Ken Whittaker were the winners in the Tuesday afternoon social bowls.

The runner-up were Dave Carr and Wally Rooke with the consolation prize going to Steve Grimshaw and Des Hancox.

Alan “Digit” Dick, Bill Moodie and Phil Ross were the winners in the Thursday afternoon social bowls. The runner-up were Don Tynan, Keith Uptin and William Wheeler with the consolation prize going to Phil Travers, Stan Farmer and Pat Farrell.

PORT MACQUARIE WOMEN’S

CONDITIONS were perfect for the first round of the Foursome Stroke Championships, which was played on Wednesday.

There were 96 players and the day was sponsored by Curves Women’s Health and Fitness.

The A Grade winners were Anne-Maree Roach and Adri Fouche scoring 73.5 ahead of Pamela Jones and Michelle Lloyd with 76 while Faye Meade and Kathleen Felstead came in third on 77.

In B Grade Lyn Sentance and Elizabeth Fraser had a great win with 72.

The runners-up were Catherine Atkinson and Nancy Whitely who scored 73.5 and in third place with 78 were Yvone Heslin and Jessise Seago.

On Friday the semi-final of the Singles Knockout match play was contested.

Betty Dunn played Robyn Linn and Zoe McWhirter played Belinda Richardson.

Both matches went the full 18 holes with all the players very focussed and playing great golf but Betty and Zoe won through to the final next Friday.

There was a Single Stableford event sponsored by Laing and Simmonds Real Estate and 76 players participated.

The results were as follows: A Grade winner Geraldine Lavender 34 runner-up Di Collocott, B Grade winner Irena MacDonald 36 runner-up Colleen Gates 35 c/b, C Grade winner Maureen Walch 34 runner-up June Williams 33 c/b.

Also scoring well and being awarded balls were Margaret Perkins 35; Susan Warner 33; Glenys Cummings, Pat McKeown, Pat McNeill, Judy Toogood and Jan Campbell 32; Kay Sallaway, Anthea Oates, Frances Smith, Anne James and Josie Mockford 31; Jennifer Dulhunty, Marie Horan, Annette Jackson, Giang Duong and Helen Smith 30c/b.

The winners of the nearest the pin on 5th were Helen Smith, Margie Hanlan and Frances Smith (2nd shot).

Geraldine Lavender won the all-in on 16th.

WAUCHOPE LADIES

CONDITIONS were a little chilly for the first round of the Foursome Championships held on Wednesday, August 19 with fifty two players competing.

Leading the field is the formidable pairing of Ann Maree Campbell and Jo Horton, who came in with a gross score of 87, closely followed by Lyn Kelly and Lyn Hobson with 88.

Division Two is led by Phyl Barnaby and Narelle Quinn with 95.

Nett winners in Div 1 were Inez Gavin and Jenny Taylor with 73, runner-up Barb Varcoe and Sue Thompson 74-1/2.

Div 2 nett went to Dot Lynch and Pam Wilis with 7 Tisdell in Div 1, and on the 18th S Thompson and B Varcoe in Div 1, R Maloney and I Turner for Div 2.

The ball comp went to teams of 79 or better.

This Friday we host Port Macquarie Ladies for the return visit to battle for the Timbertown Bowl, the event kindly sponsored by Viper Packaging - there will also be a raffle.

Jacob’s a City2Surf star

Wendy’s work reaps reward

A FABULOUS, but stressful learning experience has not only led to a win for one dedicated volunteer, but also for her community.

Wendy Hudson is the President of the Kendall Tennis Club.

She is also the driving force behind the installation of three full-size international standard courts at the small town on the Camden Haven River.

Sports NSW acknowledged Mrs Hudson’s outstanding achievement and contribution with a Sports NSW 2015 Community Sports Volunteer Award as community sport administrator, last Friday.

“Running a tennis club comes naturally to me because I have played tennis from an early age,” Mrs Hudson said.

“My parents ran the club prior to me so I learnt from the best.”

It has taken 10 years, hundreds of volunteer hours from many within the Kendall community and bucket loads of tenacity, she said, to see the dream of international standard courts come to fruition.

A police officer when wearing her other hat, Mrs Hudson said she previously had no experience with project management.

With the guidance of those around her she learnt an enormous amount.

The hardest challenge had been in finding funding for the courts, she said.

“The advice I would give to volunteer groups out there is don’t give up.

“Don’t let those that knock you get to you, stay professional at all times, build a support network around you, identify strengths of those in your committee and delegate accordingly and give them ownership of their area.”

THE Young Sport Star of the Week is runner and Year 10 student Jacob Barlow.

Jacob recently represented the Port Campus of Hastings Secondary College at the City2Surf, clocking an impressive personal best time of 71 minutes and 44 seconds.

Jacob’s time was the fastest recorded on the Hastings Secondary College team, which sent a contingent of 4 teachers and 12 students to Sydney to compete on August 9.

This was not Jacob’s first City2Surf outing, having achieved a respectable result last year in his debut run.

“Anything under 90 minutes is generally very good. Last year I did it in 81 minutes, but I was joking around a bit,” Jacob explained.

This year, a healthy rivalry with Head Teacher PD/H/PE, Geoffrey Duck, provided adequate incentive for Jacob to push himself to a new level, and claim a few bragging rights along the way.

“Last year I went in it and the Head PE teacher beat me by 10 minutes, which was a lot,” Jacob said.

“I basically trained to beat him this time ... I ended up beating him by a couple of minutes,” he joked.

The Executive Principal of the College, Dr. Wayne Ible also took part in the run this year, coming in ahead of most of the team’s students and obtaining a very competitive time of 81 minutes and 13 seconds.

“The run is 14 kilometres, with Heartbreak Hill in the middle of it, which is 1 kilometre itself,” Jacob explained.

Jacob said that his passion for running goes hand-in-hand with his involvement in other sports, with much of the training being interchangeable. The local sportsman represents the College in Futsal, is captain of the Port Macquarie FC U16s, and plays in defence in the Reserve Grade.

Jacob Barlow performed outstandingly at the recent City2Surf Jacob commented: “I had lots of football training in the lead-up to the City2Surf. We had fitness instructors come in, so that helped a lot.”

“I love running … in the City2Surf, you get a mindset where you think, ‘I’ve got to beat everyone else’, even if you’ve got no chance of actually doing that,” he added.

The sense of accomplishment was one aspect of the experience that Jacob noted as memorable.

“I thought ‘I can’t believe I have done this’,” he said.

Jacob noted that one of the particularly special elements of the run was the Sydney cityscape, which was on display throughout the circuit.
