THE NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has been protecting the region for decades and will soon see its operational centre in Kempsey transformed, thanks to funding from the NSW Government and Kempsey Shire Council.

When completed, the $840,000 facility, on the corner of River and North streets, will include an expanded operations/communications room, three new staff offices and upgrades to its information and communication technology training facilities.

The current building, located on Kempsey Shire Council’s original workshop site, is well over 60 years old and is in desperate need of a makeover. Zone Manager, Superintendent Lachlann Ison, said the planned renovations would bring the operations centre up to date with the latest requirements for incident management and would provide better services to the RFS volunteers on the Lower North Coast.

“One of the major drivers for the identified changes is the need to work better with the community during wildfire events, as evidenced by the Black Saturday fires in 2009,” he added.

The operations centre is also used in conjunction with other emergency services in the Kempsey and Nambucca shires during natural disasters such as flood. “We have an extremely FRONT PAGE AD good working relationship with the other emergency agencies, which is important for the local community,” Superintendent Ison said.

Rural fire Business owners angry at CBD neglect volunteers: Knowing that a history “squatters are using the building of service containing a known asbestos hazard makes it all the more important to find a solution

By CHRISTINA PARKIN LOCAL business owners in the precinct of the former Food for Less supermarket have become increasingly concerned about the vandalism and squatting taking place in the derelict building.

“It’s become an eyesore and a disgrace for tourists to see this degree of neglect of an essential gateway into our CBD,” said Chris Geddes, owner of the Plaza newsagency, who fields a constant stream of negative comments from their customers.

The supermarket itself was closed on April 5, 2012, yet the Plaza newsagency owned by Chris Genders, was forced to move out to Palm Court in 2008. Mr Geddes has been a longterm critic of the neglect and appearance of the building.

“Council really need to be proactive in coming up with a solution with Woolworths,” says Mr Geddes.

“Level it or redevelop the building without extra access to the carpark, but get it done quickly.

“Knowing that squatters are using the building containing a known asbestos hazard makes it all the more important to find a solution.”

Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said: “It is unfortunate that the former Food for Less building has deteriorated to a point where it is now an eyesore.

“I would encourage Port MacquarieHastings Council to liaise with Woolworths to ascertain their intentions for the remediation of the building and plans for the future use of the site.”

Woolworths’ management pulled out of an EOI process to develop the car park from the boat ramp to the Fisherman’s Co-op, which is

Crown Land, but the trust is managed by the Port Macquarie-Hastings Council.

A Woolworths spokesperson has said that they will be working closely with Council and the local police authorities to ensure the premises is thoroughly inspected and safe and secure for the local community.

“We remain committed to Port Macquarie and are exploring options to bring a local Woolworths supermarket to the area in the medium to long term,” said the spokesman.

According to Superintendent Ison, the Lower North Coast Zone traditionally has an earlier fire season than the southern areas of NSW and Victoria due to the low winter rainfall, followed by strong, westerly winds in early spring.

When the first fire brigades begun in the Macleay Valley close to a century ago, the volunteers were local land owners who came together wanting to protect their properties in times of need.

“They hitched a tanker to a trailer in those days or just used leather beaters,” Superintendent Ison explained.

The role these brave fire fighters performed for their community was formalised under the Bushfire Act in 1948.

Yet, the RFS in its current form wasn’t established until 2001 following the introduction of the Rural Fires Act in 1997.

In just the Lower North Coast Zone there are 30 brigades, 15 in the Macleay Valley and 15 in the Nambucca Shire.

This year sees the 50th anniversary of the Mooneba/Turners Flat brigade.

In 2015 the South West Rocks brigade turned 60 and in 2014 Stuarts Point/Yarrahapinni also turned 60.

In December 2017 the Dondingalong/ Sherwood brigade will celebrate its 75th anniversary, and Captain, Steve Sproule, wants to track down any memorabilia from the brigade’s inception in 1942 until the present day.

OH my goodness! If the last three weeks are anything to go by, we are going to be staring down the barrel of Christmas and New Year within the blink of an eye!

I know that sounds a tad crazy, but really! We have hit the ground running here and haven’t stopped, Australia Day is here, Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and before we know it Easter will be here with the second term of school holidays … and school hasn’t even gone back yet!

So it brings to mind the old adage that my mum always used to say; ‘don’t wish your life away’.

And then I think, I’m not wishing it away, I’m struggling to keep up with it. Sort of similar to the hamster on the never ending wheel.

Just to make sure I’m not completely crazy, which means not ready to be taken away in a strait jacket and placed in a padded cell, yet, I have checked with friends and family and they are all suffering from the same feeling. My son has mentioned a few times recently that just a couple of years ago a week to him took forever, now he’s constantly telling me how his life has sped up and is literally flashing before his eyes. Wow! It really makes me wonder. Is it just the older you get, the quicker the time goes by? Is it because everything is instant in today’s world. Or is it something in the water? Whatever, 2016 looks to being scarily exciting!

Focus on council amalgamations AS a long term resident of the Macleay, with a continuing interest in matters of community concern, I am satisfied that Kempsey Council, while not recognised as ‘Fit for the Future’, has not been identified for amalgamation.

The opportunities Port Macquarie/Hastings, Nambucca and

Armidale/Dumaresq are not inviting.

I am a supporter of resource sharing, however to date, I have not been able to determine from council the actual financial benefits to our community.

I contend that if resource sharing was widespread throughout it would have financial savings which could

be diverted towards much-needed infrastructure while improving sustainability management.

In other words maybe a reduction in overheads and duplication of equipment would provide for more acceptable outcomes to meet the needs of the community.

Maybe councils could review the

effort of Coffs Harbour City Council in the reduction in management positions plus 30 redundancies.

PREMIER Baird’s announcement just before Christmas about forcibly merging local councils was totally without any basis or merit.

The Government keeps talking about ‘four years of consultation’, but they have now overturned the recommendations from all these earlier reports.

Professor Graham Sansom, who was the government’s expert adviser on council reform, has said these latest forced merger proposals ‘fail the test’ of good reform.

The last four years was just a pseudo-consultation, just like the legalistic ‘tick the box’ paperwork currently underway with their socalled ‘delegates’.

Premier Baird will obviously get the answers he expects from this pseudo­consultation.

Local communities should make their views known, and put in submissions.

But the Government is not really interested in what local communities have to say. The Premier must release the secret KPMG report that is the basis for their current merger announcements, and was completed with no community input at all.

We are taken aback by the comments from some Government MPs that they could ‘no longer lobby the minister directly on behalf of councils’ as the Boundaries Commission was now involved.

This is nonsense. Local MPs are elected by their community to represent them. There is absolutely

no reason that they should not be lobbying on behalf of their community as strongly as they can.

No-one in NSW believes that Premier Baird would have announced these forced mergers without the agreement of his local Coalition MPs. Maybe that’s the real reason they have decided to go quiet? In the end, it will be the local Government MPs - Liberals and Nationals - who will decide whether they are prepared to stand up for their communities, and demand that Premier Baird lets their local councils stay local.

Unhealthy increase EARLY in 2015 I advised Dr Gillespie that the Government had approved health insurance premium increases of an average approximating 14% but many thousands had increased by 22% during the term of this government.

The member for Lyne responded that he understood my concerns and would pursue it with Health Minister Ley. Six months later I received a dismissive letter from Ms Ley who incredibly missed the whole point.

On this entire planet any government which allowed the above excess without investigation would be ridiculed.

FANCY the sound of ‘orange-infused olive oil’?

It is only one of a number of new ‘Bago Bluff’ products developed by The Other Chef Fine Foods entrepreneur, Eric Robinson, in partnership with the Hastings Co-op and launched with a delicious morning tea for customers at the Port Macquarie ‘Growers’ store last week.

Present at the launch was local MP, Mrs Leslie Williams, Hastings Co-op CEO, Allan Gordon, The Other Chef Fine Foods Eric Robinson and Hastings Co-op Board Member, David Johnson.

“The Bago Bluff range has been created utilising locally grown produce and raw ingredients,” said Mr Robinson.

“It utilises local manufacturing which benefits the local economy and employment.

The majority of the range is bottled in Australian-made glass.

“The Other Chef Fine Foods are extremely proud to supply this range of products for the Bago Bluff brand, which showcases the quality of produce grown and made in our region.”

The products include a zesty corn relish – a special request by CEO, Allan Gordon, which was well received by those attending the launch. Scones with generous lashings of marmalade or strawberry jam and cream, yellowbox honey from Kempsey, and a spreadable quince paste join the ‘Bago Bluff’ line, along with the more savoury tomato relish, caramelised balsamic and lemon and orange infused olive oils for drizzling over cooked or salad greens.

AS everyone gears up for a fantastic 2016 (hopefully), there is plenty already happening in the world of local government with proposed mergers, boundary changes and planning for the years ahead.

Just prior to Christmas last year, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s General Manager and I took part in a telephone hook-up with Premier Mike Baird and Local Government Minister Paul Toole, who outlined the changes planned for Local Government in NSW. This included reducing the state’s 152 councils down to 112. Port Macquarie-Hastings Council had been previously identified as having the scale, capacity and financial viability to remain as a stand-alone council, without the need for amalgamation with another council area.

Nonetheless, the announcement by the Premier that we would remain as such, was a relief to our local community. Councils that have been marked for amalgamation will be attending workshops across the state, one of which will be held in Port Macquarie on February 1, in order to prepare themselves for the steps ahead.

There has also been talk of a delay in holding the 2016 Local Government Elections, which were confirmed by the Premier who indicated that the elections may be postponed six months to early 2017.

Along with providing the NSW Government more time to transition merging councils, this will also provide some clear air for the federal

elections due to be held at some stage this year.

The federal election will be contested based on new boundaries, following a recent electoral redistribution.

The redistribution will see Port Macquarie split from both Wauchope and Camden Haven, to be included in the seat of Cowper alongside Coffs Harbour.

Council formally objected to this move and addressed the Australian Electoral Commission Committee directly with our concerns, alongside many other local groups and individuals.

I have had many express their disbelief at this result, which will see Port Macquarie compete directly with Coffs Harbour for the same electorate funding and will divide our local community of interest. The timing of the local government and federal electorate boundary changes has also created some confusion which hopefully, has been clarified in this column.

It has been an interesting start to the New Year already.

By LIZZIE McLEOD THE Sublime Chimes certainly strike a unique chord in Port Macquarie and beyond.

The bellringing group is also ringing the changes as it opens its door for more members to join their melodic ensemble.

The team of thirteen ladies has played at numerous local events including the Legacy Concert, We Remember concert, carol concerts at the Beechwood Uniting Church and the Carol Concert for the Salvation Army.

The Sublime Chimes Ensemble Coordinator, Gail Perkins says bellringing has been around for a very long time and remains popular today.

“Hand bells were originally developed to give the opportunity for the bellringers on the tower bells to be able to practice without disturbing the whole neighbourhood,” she explains.

“Now they’re very popular, particularly in the UK, United States, Australia, NZ, and places like Japan and Korea.”

The local group has been around for just over two years.

“It was after I had been to the UK and met some friends who are now tower bell ringers and go around the countryside reviving the art of ringing the church tower bells.

“That just sort of sparked a bit of an idea in my head that maybe we could do that not using church bells, but handbells instead. I mentioned it to our musical director, Ruth Bergin, and she thought it would be a brilliant idea to start a group.

“So we called up some people to join us,

Bellringing is especially attractive to people who have had little or no musical experience.

“About half of the initial group had knowledge of reading music notation and the other half couldn’t as they had never learnt,” said Gail.

“I was one of those people who had never learnt to read music. Bellringing is one of the very few instruments that you can learn to play without having to read conventional music notation. It was a great way for me personally to learn how to play an instrument.”

National and international handbell ringing competitions are held regularly. A great group to look up for inspiration is Japan’s Kiriku Handbell Choir, who have a video ‘plink plank plonk’ on

“Although we are only small we are a very friendly group and have a great rapport with one another,” says Gail.

“We just love making music and if we can bring that joy of music to other people that’s wonderful for us and for them we hope.”

The Sublime Chimes play a variety of music from traditional Beethoven to more contemporary numbers. Children will also stay amused with numbers such as ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’.

“Each bell is a different note. We have three octaves, so that’s 37 different notes, 37 different bells. Each person that is playing would normally play two bells. Handbells are the only instrument we know of that takes a whole team of players. It’s created as a team and we are all involved in playing the instrument.

“We meet on a Friday afternoon from 2-4pm and we would like some new numbers, preferably if they can read music as it will help them to slot in seamlessly into the group.

“We need a few new members because it enables us to make a greater range of music and take on more gigs. It’s always good to have a greater amount of people so that we can put these performances together.”

Many people may be surprised that bellringing is referred to often in our everyday language – ‘ringing the changes’, ‘rings a bell’, ‘dead ringer’, ‘with bells on’.

New Underquoting Laws: Consumers now have greater certainty about property prices with stronger underquoting laws now in effect.

The new laws protect consumers and fulfil an election commitment.

Buying a property is one of the most important and expensive purchases an individual or couple will ever make. Underquoting is illegal and misleads potential buyers looking for their dream home.

There had been no successful prosecutions related to underquoting made under the previous Act in 13 years, so these new laws are long overdue.

Some of the amendments to the Property Stock and Business Agents Act 2002 include: • An agent cannot state or publish a price for a property that is less than their reasonable estimate of the property’s likely selling price contained in the agency agreement with the seller; • Estimated selling price can be a single figure or a price range. If a price range is used, the highest price must not be more than 10 per cent higher than the lowest price; • Advertisements and representations that say ‘offers over’ or ‘offers above’ or any similar statement are prohibited.

In addition to the existing penalty of $22,000, agents found guilty of underquoting will now be liable to forfeiture of any commission or fees from the sale.

The new laws are supported by the Real Estate Institute of New South Wales, the Estate Agents Co-operative and the Australian Livestock and Property Agents Association.

Led by long time regional manager and presenter, Cameron Marshall, as Chief of Staff, ABC Regional will be a new division within the ABC Corporation which brings regional presenters, producers and reporters together as one team.

Cameron has managed the ABC Mid North Coast and Coffs Coast local radio teams since 1998. He also had experience as a statewide evenings presenter in Adelaide and mornings presenter in Broken Hill following time spent in commercial radio.

Cameron says his highlights at the ABC so far have included planning for disaster recovery following Cyclone Yasi in Northern Queensland and broadcasting during the Mid North Coast floods in 2011 and again in 2013.

“In these days of great change in the media landscape, the ABC is more important than ever in being a unique voice reflecting the stories from our region,” Mr Marshall explained.

“I am excited by the new role and the opportunity to lead a great local team developing innovative content for a wider ABC audience

The local programs and presenters are now back with their loyal audiences, from midJanuary, with only some minor changes in timing.

For ABC Mid North Coast, the Rural Report with Kim Honan starts the line-up earlier at 6.15am followed by Michael Spooner until 10am; Cameron Marshall until 11am then Michael Condon from 12noon-1pm with the Country Hour. The afternoon’s schedule remains unchanged with Statewide Drive from 3pm-6pm with Fiona Wyllie.

Bargains at Camden Haven THE Camden Haven Community Health Centre’s UHA volunteers will hold a monster garage sale on Saturday (January 23) in a bid to provide local community groups with a place to meet.

The garage sale will be held at the Community Health Centre in Laurie Street, Laurieton, from 9am to 3pm, and will feature household furniture, Christmas decorations and outdoor displays, as well as homewares – many of them new and still in their packaging.

Camden Haven UHA President Stephanie Wright said all proceeds from the sale would go towards the refurbishment of a meeting room at the Laurie Street centre.

“This will be a place for local community groups to meet, free of charge,” Mrs Wright said.

“And it will be thanks to those in our community who have donated items for the sale and to those who turn up on the day to find themselves a bargain or two.

“We really want to thank everyone who supports our fundraisers because they make it possible for us to then support our community.”

The new-look meeting room will also have an outside area, which is also being refurbished thanks to the January 23 fundraiser.

Police congratulated MEMBER for Oxley Melinda Pavey has congratulated the coordinated efforts of the Coffs Clarence and Mid North Coast Local Area Commands after the recent capture of an escaped prisoner from Glen Innes Correctional Facility.

About 1.40pm on yesterday January 14 Strike Force officers, with the assistance officers from the Newcastle Local Area Command, arrested the man in Steele Street, Newcastle.

The arrest comes after a recent spike in the number of crimes across the North Coast.

I moved to Port Macquarie for work in 2008, one of the best decisions of my life!

What do you love most about the area?

Coming from Queanbeyan near Canberra, I’d have to say the weather! But I also love the community spirit. I have joined several organisations since arriving and everyone has been most welcoming. And how can you go past the coastal walks?

Where do you work and what do you love about your work?

I am lucky to work with an amazing team at North Coast TAFE! As the Manager of Library Services, I not only get to see how education transforms lives and produces the professionals of tomorrow, I get to work with a great team of educators up and down the coast from the Queensland border to Forster in the south.

What do you like least about your work?

Driving up and down the Pacific Highway!

Although now much of our business is done electronically, there is a certain part where face to face really helps ensure best customer service.

How do you start your day?

I’m awake every morning at 4.45am for either bootcamp at Town and Flynn’s beaches, personal training at YourLife or Dragon Boat training on the majestic Hastings River. On the occasional Thursday morning, I might sleep in until 5.45am!

What do you do in your spare time?

Most of my away-from-work time is spent as the president, coach and paddler for the Flamin’ Dragons Dragon Boat Club.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I have had great support from family and friends over the years which has allowed me to graduate with a Masters Degree but last year I was named Dragon Boat NSW Individual Member of the Year, and I am most proud of representing NSW at the National Dragon Boat Titles and bringing home a Gold medal!

Services funding assured

A NEW app focused on encouraging an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is on its way for preschoolers on the Mid-North Coast.

Following the positive feedback from a trial using apps to teach pre-schoolers another language, the Federal Liberal-Nationals Government will look to replicate that success with an app to inspire young Australians’ interest in science and technology as part of its Innovation and Science Agenda.

The languages app has had great feedback in its initial trial and I look forward to the expansion of the trial in more locations like the Mid-North Coast.

The Federal Liberal-Nationals Government is spending $2.5 million to expand the trial of the Polygots languages app for pre-schools, with the almost 1000 schools that applied to be part of the trial, but were unsuccessful, now having the opportunity to apply in 2016.

LOCAL services for children, young people, families and communities in the Port Macquarie electorate will continue to help those vulnerable people to overcome complex challenges, acoording to Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams.

“Services in our area will receive an extension of $2.199 million funding until mid-2017 for targeted earlier intervention and intensive programs,” Mrs Williams said.

“This funding is part of the NSW Government’s $233 million commitment to intervening early to address issues in families which put children at risk of harm and likelihood of entering the child protection system.

“Local services providers include Mission Australia, Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Centre, Uniting (NSW), Hastings Family Links, Port MacquarieHastings Council and Manning Valley Neighbourhood Services.

“Extending funding to mid-2017 will provide certainty for our community partners that provide important services like case management, parenting programs and domestic violence support.”

Between now and 2017 the NSW Government through the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) will work closely with local service providers to co-design an improved targeted earlier intervention service system in NSW. “It is important that the reach and impact of earlier intervention programs is maximised so families and communities have better outcomes,” Mrs Williams said.

Ned Kelly - a saint by any other name

A HAGIOGRAPHY is the biography of a saint.

I want to tell you about a young man who received an award for bravery.

This young man saved a child, seven-year-old Richard Shelton, from Hughes Creek in Victoria, from drowning in a flooded creek.

The boy’s parents, Essua and Elizabeth Shelton, had been proprietors of Avenel’s Royal Mail Hotel, near Seymour.

The rescuer had been near the creek when he came across Richard Shelton, in the creek and near death.

Without hesitation, this young man jumped into the swollen creek and saved young Richard.

“He was a champion bloke, an absolute bloody champion,” said Richard Shelton’s grandson years later.

Richard’s parents presented the boy with a green silk sash for his bravery. The sash was 221 centimetre long and 14 centimetres wide, made of green silk complete with gold bullion fringes at each end. The colour chosen was symbolic of Irish heritage. The rescuer’s name? Ned Kelly.

Ned thought so much of the sash, and his effort in being awarded it, that he was wearing the sash beneath his armour at the 1889 Glenrowan siege.

in 1973. Things could have been different for Ned Kelly and he could have slipped into the obscurity that involves all of us, if only things had been different.

Then I come to the word hagiography.

Lawyer and television presenter Geoffrey Robinson said several years ago that the Kelly family grievances were no excuse for the Kelly hagiography. Here is a word that has caused several people to consult their dictionaries.

Hagiography is a branch of literature or legend relating to the lives of saints.

Surprisingly, several documents have used the expression ‘saint or sinner’ when discussing Ned Kelly.

Ned Kelly dictated to Joe Byrne what has become known as the Jerilderie Letter. He wanted to hand it to a local newspaper editor but that plan failed so he gave it to a bank teller instead. Kelly said about one incident: “I was not

there or I would have scattered their blood and brains like rain; I would manure the Eleven Mile with their bloated carcasses and yet remember there is not one drop of murderous blood in my veins.” Just as well he wasn’t there!

The Greeks had a word hagio or hagi that related to the rule of saints. Hagiocracy referred to the government of persons ‘esteemed holy’ – obviously not referring to any government in Australia. Hagiolatry was the worship of saints.

In 1656 a hagiographer was described as ‘he that writes holy things’.

Throughout the world, Ned Kelly is associated with Australia. I was in Singapore standing to one side, embarrassed, while an Australian friend bartered with a shop assistant for more than half an hour. Eventually, the shop assistant muttered to himself ‘Ned Kelly’.

Kelly died in 1880. Australians associate the expression ‘Such is Life’ with Kelly, but Charles Dickens used that expression in Our Mutual Friend in 1865.

Art prize three-peat for Vanessa 10th Showcase a success for Hastings group

LOCAL Laurieton artist, Vanessa Newell, has won the Mid North Coast Open Art Prize of $1000 for a record third consecutive year with ‘The Fitting’.

Ms Newell also won the first prize in the oil/acrylic section with ‘The Café’ and a commendation for ‘Early Riser’.

The Hastings Valley Fine Art Association has just completed a very successful, 10th Annual Summer Showcase Art Exhibition at the Laurieton United Services Club.

The judge, nationally and internationally renowned artist Ken Strong, said while it was difficult to award more than one prize to any one artist, he had to go with his initial feelings and thoughts about the artworks presented.

Overall 222 works of art were exhibited while 97 people attended the Opening evening and 513 votes were cast in the People’s Choice Award.

Highly Commended for the Mid North Coast Open Art Prize was ‘Symphony of Australia’

by Jill Cairns and Judy Jelsma received a commendation for ‘Distant Memories’.

Jan Wilson’s ‘Lake Cathie’ was awarded a highly commended and Brian Barker earned a commended for ‘Carnarvon Gorge’ in the oil/ acrylic section.

In the watercolour category, Brian Barker’s ‘Menindee Lakes’ was the winner with a highly commended awarded to Roger Speaight’s ‘A Day to Remember’ and Harold Le Jeune’s ‘Towards St Peter’s Rome’ receiving a commendation.

The chosen charity for this year, Hastings Women and Children’s Refuge, will receive a generous donation when finances are finalised.

MANY people search for the Fountain of Youth but for two residents of Kempsey’s Vincent Court, the secret to a long and happy life is simple.

And for both women that secret seems to be swimming in the sea, good friends, family, home-grown food, dogs and Sunlight Soap.

Photographs of her four children, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren surround Joy Rich, as she sits beside an open sliding door to her private leafy verandah.

Joy, who turns 91 on January 29, moved from Narrabri to Crescent Head about 12 years ago because she loved the beach.

“It’s so peaceful at Crescent Head,” she said.

“But when I turned 80 I started to go downhill and couldn’t go swimming much anymore.”

On the 4th of this month she would have been married 70 years, but sadly her husband, Richard, passed away 20 years ago.

Her secret to a long and happy marriage is a bit of give and take.

To keep her mind sharp Joy reads a lot and she has had three dogs.

“Dogs are great company,” she added.

Her beauty routine was to wash her face with Sunlight Soap.

“I used little make-up,” Joy said.

“Dad didn’t like lipstick.”

Chicken was a luxury when she was growing up while corned beef was a stable, served with spinach, pumpkin and potatoes grown in the backyard veggie plot.

Like Joy, Heather Jennings, has family photographs of her stepdaughter, two sons, daughter and seven grandchildren smiling down on her in her large room with the same leafy outlook.

Heather’s walls are also adorned with her original artworks.

“I only started painting when I moved into Vincent Court, and reading too,” said the

Vincent Court residents, Joy Finch and Heather Jennings, share their secrets to living a long and happy life 82-year-old.

A creative soul, Heather has always kept a diary and still does.

“Everyone rings up and asks me where they were on a certain day,” she said, smiling.

Heather also writes letters and loves to knit and crochet, evident in the beautiful quilt and pillow cases in her room.

She has been married twice, first to Les and then Sid. Her secret to a good marriage is to keep working at it.

“Don’t make the same mistakes, just make different ones,” she added, chuckling.

And the same as Joy, Heather washed her face with Sunlight Soap.

OVER $4-million in local bridge upgrades will get underway throughout the Lyne electorate after Local Federal MP Dr David Gillespie announced a further $2-million in funding for five local projects throughout the Hastings and Manning.

“And we always had to sit at the table with our glass of milk and couldn’t leave until it was gone,” she added.

Heather was born in Gympie and came to Kempsey in about 2003 to be near her younger sister, who has now passed away, along with her two brothers.

“Kempsey grew on me because it’s a friendly place,” Heather said.

Once Heather played hockey but she always went swimming, even though she never officially learned how.

Like Joy, she just loved the beach and has always owned a dog.

And Heather’s secret to a long life is to just keep talking.

Council to get tough on beach ‘squatters’

Aldavilla school gets top marks for waste work ALDAVILLA Primary School has celebrated becoming the first school to complete the ReSourceful Schools Program and were presented with an accreditation certificate

The ReSourceful Schools Program is delivered

by Cascade Environmental Education and supported by Midwaste Regional Waste Forum to provide local schools with hands-on innovative Waste Education.

In 2015 teachers from Cascade

Environmental Education Centre gave lessons to the students at Aldavilla Primary School on the importance of keeping rubbish out of our bushland, rivers and oceans minimising our landfill waste. They also assisted the school Environment Team in conducting an audit of all the waste produced by the school in one day. Subsequently, the Student Environment Team introduced a recycling program into the school, which in just 6 weeks, has resulted in the swapping of two kerbside red Landfill bins for 2 yellow Recycling bins saving the

school over $500. In addition, the school’s 20 chickens are happily munching through over 10kg of food scraps produced by students and staff each day providing free fertiliser and eggs to eat.

$2000 hospital boost THE Lodge Star of Wauchope has started 2016 the same way it has started every one of its past 99 years – supporting its local community.

Recently the Freemasons, with the help of their official charity in NSW/ACT – Masonicare – donated $2000 to the Physiotherapy Unit at Wauchope District Memorial Hospital.

The funds have been used to purchase a scanner/printer/facsimile machine for the recently refurbished unit.

Physiotherapist Hannah Dyer said she was ‘absolutely delighted’ with the generous donation.

“The hospital recently refurbished part of the Community Health Centre so we have a new office and more staff, which is fantastic,” Miss Dyer said.

“The Freemasons discovered we were in need of a printer/scanner/fax machine and offered to buy it for us.

“It means we no longer have to use equipment elsewhere in the hospital, which is better for staff, better for patients and great news for the growing number of physiotherapy students we mentor from the University of Newcastle.

“We can easily print education information for our students, or exercise programs for patients, which makes life much easier for everyone,” Miss Dyer said.

“The Freemasons are wonderful supporters of Wauchope hospital and its patients, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

The Hastings Macleay District Representative for Masonicare, Robert Drysdale, who is also the Worshipful Master of the Lodge Star of Wauchope, said the joint donation epitomised the Freemasons’ commitment to the people of Wauchope.

“Our members are a part of Wauchope,” he said.

“They raise funds from the people of Wauchope so it is fitting that we could assist the hospital, which helps Wauchope residents, with its refurbishment of the Physiotherapy Unit’s office,” Mr Drysdale said.

MORE than 100 Crescent Head residents who attended the recent Kempsey Shire Council organised Community Workshop to discuss the issue of unauthorised camping at the popular Crescent Head Foreshore Carpark have given their support to Council to progress plans to change current parking arrangements prior to Easter.

The new arrangements will be aimed at strengthening the enforcement of unauthorised camping and improving vehicle access to the carpark, especially during peak holiday times.

Prominent new signage will also be erected throughout the carpark stating camping is not permitted and pointing campers to sources of local tourism information.

Speaking at the meeting, Council’s Director, Infrastructure Services, Robert Scott said Council was committed to listening to, and working with, local residents to address the issue.

“We have been made very aware of the concern the Crescent Head community has had over this issue since Christmas and Council shares that concern as the behaviour we have been seeing is disrespectful of our environment and our community,” Mr Scott said.

“We believe that Crescent Head is feeling this issue more acutely than other beach locations along the East Coast of Australia due to its iconic surfing location and limited space.”

A new parking plan for the Crescent Head Reserve will be submitted to a special meeting of the Local Traffic Committee for endorsement before being reported to the February 16 meeting of Council for consideration.

Copies of the plan will be placed on public exhibition and circulated to the Crescent Head community for comment.

Proposed new parking arrangements include a 4-hour time limit in prime parking positions, the implementation of a ‘No Stopping’ zone, improved line marking and signage, temporary parking arrangements during peak times, alternative overflow parking in Willow Street, and better access control for the land behind the properties in Willow Street.

Healthy goals for cancer survivors WITH the New Year under way, Cancer Council NSW is encouraging cancer survivors from Northern NSW to join its free Healthy Living after Cancer program to get active, eat well and feel better after cancer.

Getting back to a healthy lifestyle after cancer is one of the most important things survivors can do for their health, reducing the chance of the disease recurring, and boosting their overall well-being.

Healthy Living after Cancer is a free telephone health coaching program for any adults who have been treated for cancer, either recently or in the past.

The program is easy to follow and will equip

participants with their own health coach, who will call them over a six-month period to set, and help them reach, their physical activity and healthy eating goals.

Local Cancer Council staff member Sarah Royall said that there is a need for programs like Healthy Living after Cancer to help people stay cancer free.

“For those who have survived cancer, adopting healthy habits is really important,” she said.

“These habits can help reduce the risk of cancer coming back, and also prevent development of other health problems – such as heart disease or diabetes.”

A LARGE dynamic and colourful art work by progressive street artist Simon Chamberlain (street tag SMC3) has been completed in Savages Lane, Kempsey.

The mural has brightened up the corner of Savages Lane and Clyde Street Mall adjacent to Richard Coade’s chiropractic centre.

A regular visitor with family in the Macleay Valley, Simon has abstracted the plant, animal, mountain, coast and sky of the area into a bright patterned, large scale art piece which plays with scale and cross sections.

“In keeping with the greening of Clyde Street Mall the mural has been based around plant life, it’s a fun and colourful work for this iconic laneway that links Smith Street to Clyde Street Mall. The businesses in the area have been hugely supportive and open to this idea and to the possibility of more artworks in the future so it becomes a vibrant passage for pedestrians between Smith Street and the Mall,” said Annabel Lines, Community Arts Project Officer.

This mural is the latest in a growing number of public artworks located around the Macleay Valley.

Council’s Director Community Relations, Kathy Oliver, said: “Public art helps to create an environment that develops a strong sense of community pride, and displays the Macleay Valley’s unique identity and history to residents and visitors.”

Stay cool this summer THE current summer weather appears to be an inconsistent mix of extremely hot and cooler days at present, but NSW Health has advised people they should take simple precautions to ensure they stay healthy in the heat.

These include staying well hydrated, avoiding alcohol and hot or sugary drinks, limiting your physical activity and trying to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day.

If you can, it’s a good idea to spend some time in an air-conditioned building.

Everyone needs to take care in hot weather but some people are at higher risk of heat illness, especially if they are older, live alone or are socially-isolated.

Signs of heat-related illness include confusion, dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, weakness, headaches and loss of sweating.

It is important to look after those at higher risk, including contacting them to make sure they are coping and have taken appropriate

precautions.

People showing any of these signs should seek urgent medical attention through their GP or local emergency department.

The New South Wales Department of Primary also advise owners of all pets and livestock to ensure adequate clean water is always available and that shading is provided where possible.

No animals should be left in confined, unventilated areas such as locked cars. Avoid walking dogs in hot conditions as the hot pavement can burn their paws.

Intensive large animal holdings, including poultry and piggeries should ensure cooling and watering systems are functioning and backup plans are in place in case of system failures.

THE StEPS program is an initiative of NSW Health and offers all four-year-old children free vision screening before they start school.

Why do children need their vision screened?

• Children rarely complain of eye problems • Children may not realise they can’t see well • Some children can see well with one eye but have very poor vision in the other eye • Children’s eyes may look OK and parents/ carers might think that their child can see well but some children might still have a vision problem • The only way to tell if a child has a vision problem is to have the child’s vision tested one eye at a time.

The MNCLHD is targeting preschools and child care centres to offer all four-year-old children a free vision screening.

For those children starting school in 2016, who did not attend a Preschool or who may have missed StEPS at their Preschool or childcare centre, it is recommended to make an appointment to attend an eye screening in January at one of the following eye screening clinics: • Port Macquarie Community Health Centre Thursday January 28 • Kempsey District Hospital Friday January 29 • Macksville Community Health Centre Thursday January 28 • Coffs Harbour Child & Family Health Centre Friday January 29 For an appointment, please contact Wendy Mutton, StEPS Coordinator, on 6656 7061.

The StEPS program has now been successfully conducted by the MNCLHD for the past six years with Registered Nurses visiting preschools and childcare centres to conduct eyesight screening on four and five year olds.

Any children returning to Preschool/Childcare centre in 2016 will have an opportunity to have their eyes checked when StEPS comes to their centre.

Consent forms are sent to the Preschool centres in advance. So parents once you see a StEPS poster displayed at your preschool with

the screening dates, please complete the consent to have your child screened, and return it to your child’s preschool/childcare centre. Following the screening, parents will receive notification of the results and if needed, options for further investigation with our StEPS 2 program or your Optometrist.

Centrelink have made mandatory the four-year-old vision screen with StEPS or an Optometrist for the payment of Family Tax Benefit A. Early detection and treatment of any eye issues at age four can correct some eye disorders preventing the life- long need for glasses and is of huge benefit for your child’s education.

Plenty to do on Aust Day Bring the JOIN the mid-north coast in celebrating Australia Day on Tuesday, January 26 - in true blue Aussie style.

Australia Day commemorates the establishment of the first European settlement and is also an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate their culture and their country.

There is plenty happening across the region as the community puts on free and fun activities.

The Macleay kicks off their Australia Day celebrations at 5.30pm on Australia Day Eve, Monday January 25. For the first time the Australia Day Awards ceremony will be held at the Slim Dusty Centre at South Kempsey.

The three categories for the awards are Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year.

The Camden Haven are off to an early Australia Day breakfast from 7am at the McClelland Street Reserve at Laurieton with entertainment including music from the Camden Haven Community Band and the Hastings Pipe Band. Their Australia Day Ceremony will commence at 7.30am.

Wauchope will kick off with an Aussie Day Breakfast from 8am and lots of entertainment at the Wauchope Showground prior to the Australia Day Ceremony commencing at 10.30am.

The South West Rocks community celebrates Australia Day with a free sausage sizzle provided by the local Lions Club at Horseshoe Bay Shelter Shed from 7am to 11am, with the Lion’s Club’s Citizen of the Year presentations made at about 9am.

Later in the morning, a free Australian-themed morning tea will be held at the South West Rocks CWA Hall.

Meanwhile at Crescent Head, the local Lions Club will also host an Aussie Day breakfast and announce local citizenship awards from 8am at the Crescent Head Rotunda in Baker Drive.

There’s no better way to celebrate Australia Day than a game of beach cricket In Port Macquarie join in and see ships sail past and smaller boats race together, fun for the kids and Hastings’ own talent competition.

BBQs will be in full swing and the beaches will be packed, but remember to head down to the Town Green for exciting activities and celebrations.

From 8am onwards there will be markets full of handcrafts and foods, jumping castles, face painting and egg and spoon races for the kids. The Sing Australia choir are making an appearance as well as the Hastings Municipal band.

A very Aussie whip cracking demonstration will amuse the audiences and the annual flag raising at 12 noon is a must.

The water will also have its own celebrations with a full program of aquatic events starting with vessels sailing past Lady Nelson Wharf and along the Hastings River from 10.30am.

See who wins when a surf boat, dragon boat and outrigger canoe race each other from 12.30 along the Hastings River amidst a program of surf boat races, nippers with their paddle board event and a jetski rescue. Yacht races will finish the program.

Meanwhile Sailability demonstrations will be held from 10.30 am till noon at McInherney Park.

The Port Macquarie Australia Day Ceremony will commence at 3pm at Town Green (or the Glasshouse if wet). Australia Day Awards and citizenship ceremony will be conducted.

Later on in the evening join the excitement while watching the Hastings Got Talent competition from 5-7pm.

Make this Australia Day a memorable one with friends, family, and fellow Aussies and other visitors and celebrate what is great about Australia.

FANCY watching a movie under the stars?

Grab your picnic blanket or fold-up chairs, refreshments and rubbish bag and head to either Laurieton tonight or Wauchope tomorrow night to catch a Hastings Moonlight Movie organised by the Port Macquarie Hastings Council.

‘Minions’ is screening at Vince Inmon Oval, Laurieton on Thursday, January 21, and ‘Big Hero 6’ can be caught at Bain Park, Wauchope on Friday January 22.

Movie goers are encouraged to arrive from 5pm to select a position close to the screen for rugs and beach chairs, or if you prefer a larger chair, then there is designated space behind the low-lying section.

The movies screen once the sun goes down and you are welcome to bring your own food and drinks or buy from adjacent cafes or restaurants. However, please do not bring your animals.

If the movie is cancelled due to extreme winds or heavy rain notification through council’s website and council’s Facebook page will occur as soon as practicable.

If cancelling the movie screening is decided close to the screening time, event staff will be available on site to advise patrons of the cancellation.

IN the Under Three Year Singles Vicky Bayliss has won on a forfeit from Jill Howard and will play Marion Kelly in the Final on Tuesday January 19.

The lucky rink winners on Tuesday were Bev McIntosh, Margaret Waite and Effie Blueming with Maralyn Poulter, Susan Malzard, Robyn Downes and Nola Scott the runners up. On Saturday the winners were Helene White and Pat Monaghan while the consolation prize went to Anna Innes, Robyn Downes and Maree Kitcher.

The selectors have organised Pennant Practice for the next three Fridays at 9am. So, all Pennant Players, please add your name to the list on the notice board in the ladies locker room. The last session on 5 February takes us right up to the start of Pennant.

North Haven Women’s

WE are experiencing extremes of weather at the moment which makes it difficult to play bowls. Most teams came off the green early last Thursday but the semifinals and final of the District Fours continued.

Spectators witnessed wonderful bowls with the final coming down to a nail biting finish with Port City defeating North Haven by one shot.

Congratulations to Barbara Waddington, Janet Ross, Joyce Marandez and Joyce Mitchell from North Haven.

Lucky winners on the day were Jan Kelk, June Kirkland, Robyn Wadling and Nancye Bull.

The committee has decided that there will be no entry fee for club championships for 2016.

The travelling bowlers are holding their annual Terry Kelly Memorial Day on Sunday January 24. This is a mixed event, with breakfast at 8.30am, followed by bowls and lunch.

Australia Day will be mixed triples starting at 10am. This year we are incorporating the next round of Australia V Rest of the World, so wear your national outfit or footy jumper or whatever.

An in-house pennant trial is scheduled for Saturday January 30. Grades 1-4 will start at 8.45 am and grades 1-4 at 12.45 pm.

Out of the hat pairs will be held the first Thursday of the month starting February. This is a new format. Phil will select the skips from the entries, and the skips will pick their leads “out the hat”.

Free coaching is available on Saturday and Sunday mornings (bowls provided), so just turn up at 10 am.

A HOT sticky day confronted 138 players for the first event for 2016. The game was a 4BBBStableford enabling the teams to move along quickly and get out of the heat. The winning team for the day was Daryl Morrow and Ian Bain with 48pts, followed by Neil Hilder and Bernie Quain with 46pts on a c/b.

In third place was Glen Regan and Jim Thompson, also with 46 pts and following in fourth place was David Flinter and Derek Foster also with 46pts on a c/b.

Nearest the pin comp was conducted on holes 4 and 18 with the addition this year of an overall nearest the pin on the 7th hole.

This Saturday January 23, we have a pennant trial organised with Lake Cathie. There will be two sides playing at home and one side playing at Lake Cathie.

On Sunday January 24, Port City are holding a memorial day for Terry Kelly. It will be a mixed day with a game of bowls in the morning followed by lunch.

An in-house pennant trial will be held on Saturday, January 30 followed by a further trial with Westport on Saturday, February 13.

Bill Elvy and his “Saints n Sinners” will visit us in February and bowl with us on Friday February 5 at 1pm and again on Sunday February 7 at 9.30am.

Thursday is Men’s Triples - casual dress with a 1pm start; Saturday is Mixed Triples – casual dress with a 1pm start and Tuesday is Men’s Pairs – casual dress with a 1pm start.

On the 4th, A grade was won by Gary Duncan with 20cm, B grade went to David Crees with 19cm and C grade went to Garry Smith with 2.86m. On the 18th, A grade was won by Alan Lynch with 3.10m, B grade went to Ian Hackney with 2.85m and C grade was won by Graham White with 2.18m. On the 7th, for the first time the overall winner was John Hill with 2.2m.

In the ball competition, balls went down to 42pts on a c/b giving 40 players a bonus ball each.

Our next week’s game is the Bi Monthly Medal Stroke which includes a putting comp and the second round of the Eclectic competition.

There is lots of interclub golfing activity over the next couple of weeks such as the first round for 2016 of the Bill Smedley Shield and the first round of the Harry Hope Shield.

Simone rapt with NRL call

Dragons ready to fire THE end of the month can’t come quick enough for the Port Macquarie Flamin’ Dragons.

They are off to compete at the State Dragon Boating titles at the Sydney International Regatta Centre at Penrith on Saturday, January 31, and it’s been a hard slog clocking up the training hours.

Club Captain, Lyn Elliott, says the team has been working very hard training for the event.

In addition to three sessions on the water a week, the state team paddlers have been doing off-the-water fitness and aerobic training.

“We are very confident we will do well at the State titles,” Mrs Elliott said.

“Twelve of our paddlers have also been selected as part of the Northern Region

representative team which has additional training.

“The win by our women’s team at the Great Lakes Regatta for the third year in a row has motivated us to set our sights on the State titles.”

Long-term member, Pam Jackson is looking at her eighth campaign for the State titles with the Flamin’ Dragons.

“It’s the ultimate team sport – 20 paddlers with a sweep and a drummer, all in unison giving it everything they’ve got for 500m or during the exciting 2km ‘turn race’,” said Mrs Jackson, who is also the sweep (steerer) for the women’s team.

New members are always welcome, and undoubtedly, they get bitten by the racing bug.

18-year-old Sarah Harrison, who joined three years ago as part of the ‘juniors’ team. Sarah is loving the aspect of keeping fit while enjoying the camaraderie that paddling with others can provide.

“I find the training very intense but competing is the biggest adrenalin rush – I love it,” says Sarah.

“Dragon boating is also a great family sport that you can do together. Mum and I train together, but at State I’ll be the drummer for the women’s team.”

SIMONE Smith’s representative touch football honours continue to accumulate, but it’s the National Rugby League call-up that has taken Simone’s sporting career to new heights.

Simone, pictured, a Mid North Coast Local Health District employee, will head to Brisbane next month to take her place in the Indigenous Women’s All Stars National Rugby League team.

The Aboriginal Health Education Officer with the Drug and Alcohol team at Port Macquarie is one of five debutantes for the Indigenous team, which is coached by former Eels, South Sydney and Sydney Roosters player, Dean Widders.

The squad will join a Women’s All Stars team as well as the Men’s All Stars and Touch Football All Stars at a camp as part of the build-up in Brisbane ahead of the Rugby League All Stars fixture at Suncorp Stadium on February 13.

Simone is a former member of the Australian Touch Football Under 18s side, was a member of the Australian Indigenous Touch Football team in 2010 and the Youth Trans- Tasman squad in 2011.

“I’m very excited and cannot wait,” Simone said.

“It’s fantastic being selected into any representative squad, but being called up into a National Rugby League team with some of the best women players is such an honour.

“It’s always an honour to play for your mob and to put on any Indigenous jersey to represent your culture.”

Kempsey Stock & Land 27th Annual Grown Steer & Bullock Sale Massive Yarding - Massive Prices!

Records tumbled in more way than one at our 27th Annual Steer and Bullock Sale, with the team from Kempsey Stock & Land penning an unprecedented 1643 head, making this the largest yarding since the sale’s inception.

The grandstand and gallery around the selling ring was full to overflowing with buyers, vendors and onlookers, and from the opening pen, competition was red hot right across the board. Feeder steers were keenly sought after, and lightweight weaner steers broke the magical 400c/kg mark, as bullock fatteners, Queensland feedlot buyers, processors and Tableland backgrounders all bid strongly to secure their share of the good quality line-up.

In the breakdown, an excellent run of fresh bullocks over 600kg sold to a top of 288.2c/kg, to average 280.3c/kg. Heavy steers over 400kg were in great demand, making up to 338.2c/kg and averaging 292.2c/ kg. Lighter steers up to 400kg made up almost 40% of the total yarding, topping at 368.2c/kg to average 313c/kg.

The younger cattle were also very keenly sought after. Weaners up to 330kg made to a top of 356.2c/kg while those between 201-280kg sold to 378.2c/kg, averaging 332.8c/kg. Around 100 lighter steers up to 200kg were penned, and this category saw phenomenal results, with the top priced calf making 414.2c/kg, and another line making 406.2c/kg, while the average was a very healthy 353.6c/kg.

A competition for the best pen of each category on offer was also conducted, with very generous sponsorship and support from Mavin Hino, Commonwealth Bank, Redpoint Batteries and Vetmec.
