The Sprout Academy is a school-year long educational preschool program at Southwest Community Center. Our teaching philosophy is children learn through play, infused with hands-on lessons of what it means to be green and how we can each do our part. By being role-models and leading by example, Sprout instructors teach students the importance of reducing, reusing, repurposing, and recycling as well as simple concepts of sustainability. Students cumulatively build on the lessons they have learned throughout the year and are well-prepared for their next adventure whether it be moving up into Pre-K, or heading off to Kindergarten! What is a Green Preschool? In spring 2010, the Sprout Academy became certified Eco-Healthy by the Oregon Environmental Council. In addition to our green-focused curriculum, the physical environment where our students learn is a healthy setting for their growing minds and bodies. Sprout teachers, the program manager, and SWCC’s building director worked together to bring the classroom setting up to the OEC’s standards for an Eco-Healthy Child Care. From the paint on the walls, to the cleaning products we use, to the educational materials on the shelves, Sprout Academy is a safe place for your child to learn and play.

PAC (Portland Aquatic Club) Mon-Fri: 4:00-5:30pm Lap Swim Etiquette “Circle Swimming” is necessary when more than two people are in a lane. Lane lines divide lap lanes. Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway, lap lanes may become crowded. At these times “circle swimming” is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmer’s speed: slow, medium, and fast. Look at the yellow markers at the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane.

Nature Day Camp Volunteer - Jr. Naturalist

Age 13-17 Responsible, patient teens who have experience working with children and enjoy nature are encouraged to apply to be a volunteer Jr. Naturalist with Nature Day Camp (ages 13-17) or the Rockin' Robins Preschool Camp (ages 15-17 preferred). The Jr. Naturalist program requires two days of training at Mt. Tabor Park (June 26 and 28 or June 27 and 29). Teens will be trained in child development, communication skills, role-modeling, and instruction techniques. Jr. Naturalists work directly with the children – supervised by paid staff – and are given opportunities to develop teaching, leadership, and group facilitation skills. Teens accepted into the program must volunteer for at least two (but not more than four) weeks. Hours of volunteering each week of camp: Nature Day Camp—8:45am-3:45pm; Rockin Robins Preschool 8:45am-1:45pm. All teens who apply must possess enthusiasm about nature, patience with children, and the openness to learn new skills. The $25 per week fee helps cover the cost of the training days and weekly supervision. TEENS WILL NOT BE TURNED AWAY BECAUSE OF INABILITY TO PAY. If the fee is a barrier, please let us know, and it will be waived. M-F • 8:45am-3:45pm Mt. Tabor Meet at the covered shelter at Mt Tabor Park—across from the playground. *No class on 7/4 Date

Parks for New Portlanders (PNP) is a program initiated by PP&R to provide recreation opportunities for immigrant and refugee communities. PNP works with partners and city leaders to design culturally relevant programs, making sure services are welcoming to communities of color, new immigrants and refugees. With one in five Portlanders being foreign-born, addressing the needs of this new and diverse population is crucial as they transition to Portland’s community.
