MEET OUR TEACHERS | HILLSIDE COMMUNITY CENTER DANA CHRISTY Hi, my name is Dana Christy. I grew up here in Portland and went to OSU where I got my Bachelor of Science in Individual and Family Development. I've always loved children and have had the opportunity to work in many elementary schools in the Portland area, Lake Oswego and three years here at Hillside! I feel that music and movement can set the tone for a special environment and make learning that much more fun for children! I'm looking forward to another great year of teaching at Hillside where we can all laugh, learn and grow together. I enjoy spending time with my son and husband. Some of our favorite activities as a family are playing tennis, ping pong, camping, swimming and most of all laughing at ourselves being silly. My favorite personal hobby is dancing. I grew up learning tap, jazz and ballet and later taught at the Multnomah Athletic Club. I had a lot of fun last year volunteering in my son's class teaching tap. CHRISTA BAKER Hello! My name is Christa Baker and I am excited to be teaching your children this year! I have a degree in early childhood education and have worked with kids of all ages for more than 25 years. Teaching and being around children is a passion of mine. I am a mother of six children ranging from 22 to 4 years of age. Needless to say, I love children. My family moved from Springfield, Illinois to Oregon three years ago. We love it here and Hillside has become an important part of my life here in Portland! As a preschool teacher, my goal is to foster independence in children. This allows them to become more confident in themselves and creates a sense of self-worth and achievement. I will work with each of my students so they learn selfcontrol, strong coping skills and good social interaction as they learn about the world around them. I want my kiddos to feel safe, loved and valued. I am looking forward to an amazing year!

Global Adventures NICOLE SENDERS Hello, my name is Nicole Senders and I’m really looking forward to this coming Preschool year. I have a BA in Anthropology and Sociology and a Minor in Education from the University of Portland. I am a licensed teacher. I taught Preschool in Gambia while in the Peace Corps. I worked with the teachers there on lesson planning, interactive teaching and classroom management. I taught summer School at Kateri Park and currently have been at Hillside in a Preschool classroom and leading summer camps since March. I enjoy giving back and some of my volunteer work includes the World Affairs Council where I created curriculum and constructed culture boxes that bring the world to the classroom to give students hands-on lesson plans, reading materials and more to spark a fascination and curiosity of the world. I lived in Costa Rica and work with the children there in day camps with AMIGOS de las Americas. I speak three languages—English, Spanish and Mandinka. My goal is to return for my masters in Bilingualism and Multiculturalism. I feel Hillside, with the Global Studies Preschool, is a wonderful fit for me. KIM BIRCH My name is Kim Birch. Currently, I am the Recreation Coordinator for the center and I oversee the preschool program. However, I was the preschool specialist for eight years at Hillside and I plan to be a familiar face in the classrooms, assisting in the classrooms and sometimes just popping in to greet the children and join in the fun! My background in education comes from the University of Portland where I received my B.A. in Elementary Education specializing in Early Childhood Education in 1992. In 2010, I received my Master’s Degree in Special Education. My philosophy of preschool education is that all children are unique and all children can learn. I feel children learn best at this stage through play and through hands-on experiences where the goal is the process and not the product. I also believe that appropriate behaviors need to be taught and not punished. Therefore, we do not place children in timeout, but work on correcting the behavior in various ways. It is my goal that every child feels successful in our preschool program!

Spring Break Explorations at Leach Botanical Garden Volcanic Bombs and Erratic Cobbles:

Leach Garden Geology Camp Cobbles carried in the Missoula Floods rest on Leach Garden’s creek bank, and a volcanic bomb from the Boring Lava Fields turned up in the meadow. Learn to read the geological landscape with Dr. Michael L. Cummings. He’ll teach you how to use topographical maps, levels, soil probes, compasses and LIDAR to collect and record information, while also sharpening your observation skills. Using your data, you’ll create a map of Leach Garden’s geology. When camp is over, you’ll see geological stories everywhere!

Dr. Cummings is an Emeritus Professor at Portland State University. He enjoys working with kids, using a hands-on, accessible approach to science that creates interest and enthusiasm.
