Nature Day Camp Volunteer - Jr. Naturalist

Age 13-17 Responsible, patient teens who have experience working with children and enjoy nature are encouraged to apply to be a volunteer Jr. Naturalist with Nature Day Camp (ages 13-17) or the Rockin' Robins Preschool Camp (ages 15-17 preferred).

ENV ED

The Jr. Naturalist program requires two days of training at Mt. Tabor Park (June 26 and 28 or June 27 and 29). Teens will be trained in child development, communication skills, role-modeling, and instruction techniques. Jr. Naturalists work directly with the children – supervised by paid staff – and are given opportunities to develop teaching, leadership, and group facilitation skills. Teens accepted into the program must volunteer for at least two (but not more than four) weeks. Hours of volunteering each week of camp: Nature Day Camp—8:45am-3:45pm; Rockin Robins Preschool 8:45am-1:45pm. All teens who apply must possess enthusiasm about nature, patience with children, and the openness to learn new skills. The $25 per week fee helps cover the cost of the training days and weekly supervision. TEENS WILL NOT BE TURNED AWAY BECAUSE OF INABILITY TO PAY. If the fee is a barrier, please let us know, and it will be waived. M-F • 8:45am-3:45pm Mt. Tabor Meet at the covered shelter at Mt Tabor Park—across from the playground. *No class on 7/4 Date

Cynthia Castro was named the Charles Jordan Community Center (CJCC) Recreation Supervisor this February, replacing Amourie Downing who now oversees Matt Dishman Community Center. Prior to joining CJCC, Cynthia was a member of Portland Parks & Recreation’s (PP&R) TeenForce Program, helping to lead the newly established $2 million Mayor’s Community Center Initiative to engage under-served youth. She was primarily responsible for managing community partnerships and serving as a liaison to former Portland Mayor Charlie Hales’ Office, who championed the initiative. PP&R initially hired Cynthia in 2014 to provide administrative support to former Deputy Director Warren Jimenez, oversee the bureau’s strategic plan, and lead special projects focused on reducing barriers faced by historically underrepresented communities to accessing PP&R facilities and services. Cynthia brings an extensive background in sports as a former Division I cross country and track and field student-athlete, collegiate coach and athletics administrator. She received her B.A. in Anthropology from Arizona State University and Masters in Public Health from Oregon State University. “I am very excited to support CJCC staff in providing quality recreation programming to bolster the overall health and wellness of our community. PERSONAL TRAINERS

Diallo Chambers Growing up in the Northwest, fitness has always been an essential part of my life. Developing a skill and passion for exercise that became a quick lifestyle. A wise person once said do something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life. It is my goal to spend my life through service. Providing a service to help others reach their physical and nutritional goals. Jutta Reichardt Philosophy: Each day is an opportunity for change and improvement. We make choices that affect our mental and physical well being that define who we are. Making health a priority, creating time for fitness, lets us achieve our goals, step by step. Time spent on self-improvement reflects in our relationships, grounds us and sustains our spirit. I enjoy working with a variety of people at any age or fitness level. Whether you want to be at the gym on a regular basis, or you need a program you can do at home, I’ll be dedicated to helping you achieve a healthy, fit lifestyle and become your personal best. Sara Brittan Fitness has always been a part of my life. It began with my mom taking me every day to our local YMCA to watch her participate in fitness classes. It later evolved to me participating myself to becoming a fitness instructor. At a young age I began to teach step-aerobics, cardio-kickboxing, and spinning. I later took fitness to another level and became a certified personal trainer through ISSA as well as a certification in exercise therapy. Fitness is my passion and my way of life. I enjoy working with people of all levels and helping others feel and look their best.

Elephant Garlic Festival

Join Senior Recreation as we head to the annual Elephant Garlic Festival in North Plains, Oregon, where the motto is: "Fun Stinks!". The oversized elephant garlic is more of a leek than true garlic, but that doesn't stop the town from pulling out all the stops to honor the pungent bulb, filling the grounds with live music, attractions and food vendors that will go heavy on the garlic. Bring money for lunch at the festival and for extra purchases. Mobility Rating: This trip is accessible to walkers, wheelchairs and motorized scooters. Continuous standing and walking. URBAN FORESTRY 1900 SW 4th Avenue 1st Floor | 503-823-8733 portlandoregon.gov/parks/trees Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry's mission is to manage and ensure Portland's urban forest infrastructure for current and future generations. Portland’s urban forest consists of 236,000 street trees, 1.2 million park trees, and innumerable private property trees. Urban Forestry is involved in managing or regulating all of these trees to differing degrees. Urban Forestry staff issue permits for planting, pruning, and removal of all public and some private trees and are on call 24/7 to respond to tree emergencies.

Portland Parks & Recreation offers a variety of fun and rewarding volunteer opportunities at sites across the city! Annually, Portlanders volunteer over 450,000 hours with us to help make our parks great! Volunteer coaches, teacher aides, and mentors are always needed in our youth programs- and the parks, gardens, and natural areas welcome extra hands. Ongoing and one-day projects are available and no experience is necessary! Contact Steve Pixley at steve.pixley@portlandoregon.gov for more information.
