NOVEMBER 2017

November 2017 Existing in a state of change. It is hard to imagine the future effects of being an island with a small population with the governance of this island fractured into state, federal and councils. When I read the global headlines I do wonder how long we can remain in our state of frustrating leadership and identity. The confluence of change is something we have to straddle and plan for the disruption it will bring. What headlines? Both UK & France will stop selling both petrol and diesel fuelled cars by 2040; Toyota can turn their car fleet into entirely Battery charged by 2020; China are leaping into chip creation which will make them world leaders in the supply of microchips. Amazon share price has risen 39% this year and for a moment Jeff Bezos was the richest person in the world. The profit engine for Amazon is its Cloud computer services. Amazon grab more headlines than baseball in the US – this month they have a campaign to employ 50,000 new workers for their US facilities. It is cited that of any online search Amazon is bigger than Google in US. Due to the Trump created slow down on migrant / illegal entrants there is actually a labour shortage in California, and further some businesses are looking at the re employment of ex criminals to bolster the work force. Foreign ownership - I have not researched this but I do not see the US selling off its utility infrastructure in a way we do in Australia. I still cringe at the sale / leasing of both the Ports of Darwin and Melbourne. Conclusion is that I don't believe we have the forward thinking brain power in our leaders to meet the emerging confluences of change. If you want to see the high point of tax minimalisation you have a look at a Foreign owned company. Where does that leave the book industry / book trade in Australia? As long as the overseas owners desire local investment there will be a trail of works. Hopefully the local management of the large foreign owned businesses fight hard to retain local lists. I see Pearson are to cut 3,000 jobs - on top of the 3,000 - 4,000 last year. The disruption caused by change has been prevalent for years and yet our party goes on despite what must be a diminishing consumer base in the years to come - that consumer base that seems unique is one that still roams shopping malls, still prefers the reading from a hard copy and if they shop online to go to a locally owned online business. To come to the point of these words. I can’t see how a reliance on Government funding into the future can be assumed as stable. That the funnel of grants for the life blood of University Presses, Writers Prizes, etc as being a long living event. With so much change I really don’t see taxes as rising in keeping with the hand out for funding. It hardly seems probable that direct tax collection and GST

The Disruptive Paradigm collection will rise to quench the need of our book community for the years to come. What other industries have Government supported businesses competing with private enterprise? I read with interest the CAL $1.3m grants to local magazines, University Presses, Not for Profit publishers and then the following 'Australian Publishers Association (NSW) $40,000.00 for a Future Book Australia 2018; Where next for Australia’s book industry. Bring together in a oneday event, leading Australian and international thinkers and practitioners in publishing, retail, editorial, writing, marketing and tech along with speakers from other industries, focusing on how publishers can define and take advantage of current trends' If you have any ideas here is the link to apply https://www.copyright.com.au/2017/07/australiancreators-receive-1-3-million-cultural-funding/ https://www.copyright.com.au/culturalfund/guidelines/ I might have a dip myself. Could also get some criticism – however it is a sign of the times that an Amazon company has been a sponsor of the APA for some time. https://www.publishers.asn.au/ Speaking of Amazon I wonder how many booksellers, publishers and authors will put their wares on Market Place; if all consumer eyes are going to be on Amazon.com.au why would you avoid “consumer junction”? Happy reading, selling and fingers crossed for the subsidies from the Government to roll on. I better start my submission to CAL along with everyone else. Humbly DJ BTW At a Booksellers Conference some time back the acronym FANG was mentioned – Facebook / Amazon / Netflix / Google. The acronym has now grown to FAANG as it includes Apple. Also Google is now owned by Alphabet. DJ

Work worth doing always has a hard part. In any results driven activity there are defining moments. A period of time between getting started and getting  finished, when things become hard and aspirations for achievement get seriously challenged. When things become  hard, people can feel stuck, and performance can stagnate. People who advance performance rarely stay stuck. They accept the stretch associated with achievement and put their skills to work. The results we seek only get  realised when we pursue what we care about and commit ourselves to the moments that matter. Easier said than  done when difficulties arise and work to derail effort. If you are a savvy leader who is feeling stuck, or simply looking to advance existing levels of success, this book will  prove invaluable. Offering practical insights on how to accelerate performance Definable Moments is one of those  rare books that will change how you work.

Author Information Andrew Horsfield is a performance consultant who advises leaders in business, sports and social enterprise. He works exclusively with forward thinking leaders who have work to get done. Work that shifts the balance, moves things forward, makes a difference and makes results happen. This work has included turning around disengaged teams and helping people champion organisational change. He has helped professional athletes find another level and worked with leaders under pressure to find clarity amidst complexity. People of influence have also been known to seek out his counsel and considered insight. With deep expertise in people and performance, Andrew avoids the fist pumping rah-rah that sounds good, but rarely does much good, preferring instead to deliver cutting edge capability development that delivers real world results.

Sid Harta Publishers Pty Ltd

In 1961 and one month following the disappearance of Michael C. Rockefeller off the southern coast of what was then known as Dutch Western New Guinea, Indonesia invaded, annexed and commenced the systematic slaughter of indigenous Papuans, to pave the way for a massive wave of transmigrated Javanese. With the meteoric rise of the new powerhouses China and India, Indonesian-occupied West Papua's wealth of oil, gas and minerals precipitates an international power-play for control over the vast, untapped natural resources. Decades have passed since the twenty-three-year-old Rockefeller disappeared - long presumed dead, when sightings of the heir are widely reported. Demands for West Papuan independence gains momentum and Australia is again drawn into military conflict with the Indonesian Motherland, "Ibu Pertiwi". In Europe, there is growing support for the international community to revisit the flawed 1969 West New Guinea plebiscite. Some member nations of the European Community, including The Netherlands, have suggested that the United Nations might consider reviewing the implementation of the referendum with the purpose of determining whether the process was, in fact, democratic. And, more recently, driven by anti-Australian sentiment the groundswell has become evident amongst Western Pacific island states which, in concert with their African counterparts such as Zimbabwe, have become increasingly vociferous in their calls for such a U.N. resolution. And, surprisingly, the lead has now been taken up by Ireland. However, the situation is more than problematic for Australians. Should the United Nations support a call for a new plebiscite to be held in West Papua, such action would undoubtedly become the genesis of any future confrontation between Australia and Indonesia - fertile ground, indeed, for the growing number of militant religious groups (both Christian and Moslem) that fester throughout the great archipelago that is Indonesia, referred to lovingly as "Ibu Pertiwi".

Redrawing the boundaries of Tasmania into five whisky districts and then journeying across each one, over four years Tasmanian whisky historian and well-respected writer Bernard Lloyd visited every Tasmanian whisky distillery, including Australia's first, to discover their distinctive and innovative ways of Tasmanian whisky making. His pioneering journey shows how Tasmania's native peats and barley strains, its climate and its water, together with its people - farmers, scientists, maltsters, brewers, distillers, coppersmiths, coopers, lawmakers, excise officers and brand ambassadors - combine to make the island's world-renowned whisky spirits. The book also features > Tasmania's Whisky Districts: maps and guide > The inner workings of all Tasmania's whisky distilleries explained by each distiller > Tasmania's whisky ingredients > Whisky Tasting Notes from expert taster Yuri Chlebnikowski > Images of rare Tasmanian whisky bottles and their labels > Archival records and never-seen-before images of colonial whisky distilleries and their departed spirits > Emerging Tasmanian distilleries > Colourful stories of colonial and contemporary whisky devils, rapscallions, moonshiners and scoffers > An Australia-wide Where To Try and Buy Tasmanian Whisky guide After many delays arriving in our warehouse mid - November

Conflict over the control and sharing of the waters of the River Murray was one of the most contentious issues at the  time of Federation. After four failed attempts, the River Murray Waters Agreement was signed in 1914 resolving the  conflict. Fifteen iterations later, it is now the Murray‐Darling Basin Agreement, and possibly Australia's longest  standing inter‐governmental compact.  This book covers the making of the first River Murray Waters Agreement, in the early 1900s, the formation of the  River Murray Commission in 1917, through to Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory joining the Agreement  in the 1990s, the Water Act in 2007 and the Basin Plan becoming law in 2012. The book has been written by Chris Guest who, as a career public servant and economist, has had a long interest in  water policy and politics, an interest that grew as governments sought to tackle the problems of over‐allocation of  water. The book was launched on 14 February 2017, one hundred years to the day that the commissioners of the newly  formed River Murray Commission met for the first time.

Author Information An economist, Chris Guest has been a career public servant, working for the New South Wales and Commonwealth  governments. His interest in water policy and politics started in 1998 with an involvement in the 'Sydney Water  contamination incident' and grew as governments sought to tackle the problems of over‐allocation of water and  environmental stress. He lives on a small property in regional New South Wales, and along with an abiding interest in  Australian politics, he is involved with heritage conservation, and enjoys films and classic cars.

Michael Rubbo

295

I've spent my life as a filmmaker. But through my 40 years making both documentaries and features, I've had to get out of the dark, out of the cutting room and be in nature. My family has a history of doing this via painting. Both my grandfather, Antonio Dattilo Rubbo, and my mother, Ellen Rubbo, painted plein air. So It was natural that my way of getting outside, has been to set up an easel, let the wind buffet my canvas, let the bugs land in the sticky oils, and people stop to be curious and comment. Be an impressionist. This book is about the results of all that painting in Canada, in Finland, and in Australia. In some cases, it's been so intense that as well as making the movies, I've become the village painter, the teller of the local story. I argue in the book that, taking ownership of a scene by painting it, is a wonderful way to soak up the restless energy we all have, energy which can see us carving up the countryside before we know it . I tell that by painting, you leave your mark but make no mark, and that's a very good strategy. It's also a story to cherish and art I think, is 50% story. Because selling was never the object, I have virtually all the oils I've ever done. Those I don't have I've recently repainted for the book . That being so, it's been quite easy to put them all together into this book to record a lifetime of art on the side. I have also more recently started art which is activist. I've been using my art to draw attention to beautiful places and buildings which are under threat from development. I've done this in our village of Avoca Beach, north of Sydney, opposing the redevelopment of the charming single screen, Avoca Theatre. Most recently, I've also become through drawing, linocuts and solar prints, a passionate advocate for the sort of stately cycling that they do in Europe. That way of riding a bike, sitting up straight not head down and hell-bent, not helmeted and blazoned and vis gear, practising a lovely way to ride that we've mostly missed out on in Australia. Travels with my art thus ends with my bicycle art and the general thought, what does this all add up to? What value does it have? As a painter I'm an impressionist. The original Impressionists had to fight the Paris art establishment and a bitter fight it was, both depressing and energising. Energising because they knew they were seeing the world in a way that was new and important. But now, there's nothing new about being an impressionist, so nobody has much cared about what I've done except family and fellow villagers, and so I've enjoyed a sort of lonely happiness, rounded by this book . Mike Rubbo, August 2017 Author Information Michael Rubbo was born in Melbourne, Australia and has spent his life making movies, winning many prizes. Filmmaking has taken him  to Canada, the US and many other countries. It also kept him in darkened editing rooms for long periods of time. His escape has been  to paint outside in lovely places as an impressionist. “The process is the product” he likes to say as each painting tells its own story.  Mike came back to Australia in 1996 to be head of ABC documentaries and later, a village painter at Avoca Beach. He is married to  Katerina Korolkevich‐Rubbo and they have a daughter, Ellen. From a previous marriage, he has a son, Nicolas.

In Forensics and Police through Time, forensic advances, developments in policing and major related events are  presented side by side in Australian history. When in their historic and geographic contexts, past investigative  methods, outcomes and the many contributors themselves may be better understood. In this volume, the chronology  spans from the initial European settlement of Australia to the close of the nineteenth century. It follows the  emergence of various forensic specialties, the development of techniques, and their application in early criminal  investigations.

Author Information Associate Professor Louise Steding (PhD) teaches forensic science, forensic psychology and criminology at Swinburne Online (SOL) a part of Swinburne University of Technology. She combines forensic archaeology and profiling when delivering practical sessions in search and recovery methods for Swinburne. Combining criminology and archaeology, her doctorate examines perspectives of crime, punishment and prison design, along with access to resources and interior spatial relationships within historic institutions. Much of her mainstream archaeology also has to do with our convict past, gaols, and human burials. An osteo and historical archaeologist, the author has excavated human remains from Colonial Australia to the burial grounds of Renaissance, Bronze Age and Neolithic Europe. Today she identifies unmarked graves using ground penetrating radar and landscape characteristics, writes exhumation protocols, and focuses on historic cold case investigations applying archaeological and profiling techniques to early homicide sites. Louise has served on the National Membership Committee of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. (AACAI) and as Chair of the AACAI Branch for New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. In addition to the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc., she is a full professional member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites and the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society.

At a time of desperate brutality, when law and order were tainted by the convict stain, its enforcement took many  tragic turns. In the case of Joseph Looker, involving theft, murder, trials and execution, did the court serve justice or  merely presented as such. This book follows the evidence seeking clarity on a case that has remained unsolved for 213  years ‐ the murder of Constable Joseph Looker. They were the Constables of the young Colony of New South Wales.  Joseph Looker, Isaac Simmons, William Bladders and John Russell were among the more trusted of convict  transportees. Tragically the murder of Constable Looker marked the first death of a police officer on duty. Could it also  have been one of the first cases of organised crime and corruption? Indeed, the circumstances of Looker's death led to  the hanging of a thief ‐ no less than three times. Was his survival a miracle, divine intervention, coincidence, or luck?  Perhaps this was one of the most daring and risky escapes in Australian history.

The sixth edition was a major upgrade from earlier editons - the guide has 224 pages (fourth edition had 192) and has 141 colour photographs (previous edition had 75 black and white photos). New additions are colour topographic maps for all major tracks and routes and gradient profiles for all major tracks and routes. New areas included are the Picton Range and also an expansion of brief notes of harder or lesser known walking routes. Overall the new guide describes almost 200 days of walking (the previous edition described 125 days). Previously published in 1976 (note form on A4 paper), 1978, 1983, 1990, 1998 and 2008. Covers all the main tracks and routes in South West and Wild Rivers National Parks in Tasmania. This covers the southern half of the Western Tasmania World Heritage Area. Track notes for the northern half are in another guide, Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park. Contains comprehensive track notes, brief background notes on history, botany and geology, comprehensive planning and preparation notes and access details. Walks described are South Coast Track, South West Cape, Port Davey Track, Huon & McKays Tracks, Precipitious Bluff (Southern Ranges), Picton Range, Federation Peak and approaches (Eastern Arthurs and Farmhouse Creek), Western Arthur Range, Mt Anne, and Frenchmans Cap. Included as brief planning notes are the West Coast (Strahan to Port Davey), the Frankland Range, the Denison, Spires and King William Ranges and also a new section of Other Routes which includes Mt Hopetoun, Old River to Federation Peak, White Monolith Range, Vanishing Falls, Mt Norold and the Prince of Wales Range. If you are intending to walk here then I recommend you read the literature provided by National Parks. Travel has changed and Tassielink no longer run scheduled buses - the only regular provider to Scottos Peak, Cockle Creek, the Huon Track etc is Evans Coaches.. For first time visitors to the region, be careful how you use the suggested walking times. The times given are the normal range for fit experienced walkers who are used to the conditions (experience elsewhere often means little in Tasmania as you will find out). The times are only walking times and most groups should add an extra 1 to 2 hours to each section to account for rest and photographic stops. Walkers not used to Tasmanian mud and scrambling with packs often find they take much longer than the suggested times and this is normal. Some writers have stated the times in the guide are fanciful but they are not, as I have beaten every time in the book, but also have taken longer myself at the start of a trip when I am less fit and am loaded with 14 days food. Once you have done 1 or 2 days, you will know how your times compare to the given times and will be able to adjust your estimates accordingly. To suggest a time range of 2 to 7 hours would be not very helpful so I hope readers understand why I have given the average range (example - 2.5 to 4 hours) for fit experienced walkers. Contains comprehensive track notes for walking the South Coast Track in Tasmania. The guide has 9 ‐1:50,000 colour  topographic maps of the entire track, 50 colour photographs plus gradient profiles of the track. This is an all colour  production with full track notes for both directions along the trail. The colour topographic maps and notes have been  colour coded for each direction to reduce confusion about which notes are currently being followed. This is one of the  world's great wilderness walks and takes 6 to 8 days to walk. Most plan for 7 days and it is suggested to carry one  spare days food in case of river floods causing delays. For those wishing to explore further than the South Coast Track, then the larger guide book South West Tasmania  which also includes the South Coast Track should be considered. This book is actually a subset of that larger guide and  we would expect walkers to use one or the other but not both. Note that the maps in South West Tasmania for the  South Coast Track are a smaller scale (1:100,000) and there is less detail in the track notes as that book is designed for  more experienced walkers.

Describes 41 walking areas around Melbourne with a total of 94 walk variations. For each walking area, one walk is described in detail and a series of variations based on the main walk are also given if appropriate. Areas covered range from Torquay, Barwon Heads, Geelong, You Yangs, Brisbane Ranges, Creswick, Daylesford, Lerderderg Gorge, Altona, Westerfolds Park, Jells Park, Braeside Park, Mordialloc, Birds Land, Sherbrooke Forest, Olinda Forest, Kinglake, Maroondah Dam, Black Spur, Cathedral Range, Lake Eildon, Gembrook, Powelltown, Cape Woolamai and Fort Nepean. The February 2009 fires have burnt a number of the walks - the update page lists the fire effected walks. Walks range from 4 to 23.5km in length. Grades range from Easy to Hard and the grading is similar to that used by most walking clubs in Victoria hence there is something for everybody. The guide includes walks of all standards, while many of the Easy walks are suitable for families, some of the Hard walks require some scrambling and are intended for experienced walkers. The book is a full colour production with colour topographic maps. Map sizes range from half page to 2 pages for each walk and standard metric scales of 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 are used . The guide also includes a 2 page key map of the Melbourne area and a 6 page Walk Index designed to assist with selecting a walk. An innovation over some books are the inclusion of gradient profiles showing climbs and descents, all at identical scales enabling easy comparison between different walks.

This epic and sweeping 200-year saga of an ancient island and its violent transformation from Eden-like paradise to the tourist-destination Tasmania of today, is told through the lives of four families. Aboriginal child Tom, stolen in 1812 and forced into early adulthood with no family, no identity, and no love; the hard working Scottish Fairfield family who leave all that is familiar to establish themselves in an alien place; the convict George Turner whose gentleness and conscience are finally destroyed by hard fate; and later the Dijkstras - displaced from Java and then from the Netherlands by WWII - come seeking a new home in the fabled isle that their own Abel Tasman had discovered in 1642. In the wake of invasion and genocide, the remnant Aborigines struggle for bare subsistence and recognition on the remote Bass Strait Islands while the pastoral settlers build their empires on someone else's land; the convict's sons try to create a new identity, and the Dutch search for peace but bring memories of other wars. All of them are in an alien environment full of ghosts and strange presences. As their descendants - ordinary people whom you might meet on the streets of Hobart today - interact around the troubled boy Ty, a threatening environmental mystery, and a fiery climax on the slopes of the grand Western Tiers, this is raw history as well as the heart-warming story of ordinary people, loving, hating and battling along in a difficult setting, indelibly marked by their past, yet striving to rise above it and seek redemption. This rich and absorbing story's other ending is still out there, waiting in the wind to be heard... - Dr Alison Bleaney A big saga tracing its people through two centuries of Island life... fascinating, and well-informed by in-depth historical research - Henry Reynolds

Chaconne is the story of an apprenticeship ‐ in life, love and early music ‐ in which not the least of the obstacles  standing in the way of Eleanor's becoming who she might be is Eleanor Weston herself. Against the Cold War craziness  of the early 1980s, the novel traces, with wit as well as lyricism, a young Australian woman's failed pursuit of love with  a bourgeois communist in Paris and her subsequent shift to the periphery of a US airbase in the Rhineland, where she  stumbles into marriage with a seemingly harmless American. When Thomas, a successful harpsichordist and self‐ hating German, comes to the village to recuperate after a nervous collapse, he and Eleanor form a deep musical  connection that not only sets her voice free but allows her to find, in the crisis that ensues, more nerve and resolve  than she ever knew she had.

Author Information Diana Brown has been a teacher, editor of subtitles, narrator of documentaries, and academic editor. She has had  several short stories published. This is her first novel.

'Moon Over the Mediterranean' is the fascinating story of Alexander, a conscientious objector in 1960s Holland. He  embarks on a lifetime adventure, travelling the hippie trail through Greece, India, Nepal, Kashmir, Afghanistan, Iran,  Israel and beyond. He keeps his sketch pad at hand , always has a good book to enjoy and engages in deep  philosophical discussions with fellow travellers, as well as falling in and out of love along the way.  As he matures, Alexander becomes more involved with the world around him, helping displaced persons, building  clinics, schools and rehabilitation centres, assisting children who have been abducted as child soldiers and abused in  horrifying ways. Finally, he embarks on several monumental projects where he attempts to change the way people  think towards bigotry and asylum seekers. 'Moon over the Mediterranean' is a feel‐good book despite the difficult issues it confronts. It tells the story of one  man's struggle to make the world a better place and live a compassionate life.

Author Information Geoffrey Maher has travelled extensively through Asia and Africa and has worked as a SCUBA instructor, freelance  journalist and aerial photographer. Geoffrey has returned to Africa on numerous occasions to assist in water  improvement and the construction of schools. He has written for magazines both in Australia and abroad and these  days spends the majority of his time on the NSW far south coast with his partner.

Historical fiction about the controversial Saint Jerome is given a  contemporary twist.

152

Black Quill Press

When the Pontiff commissions Jerome to translate the Bible  into Latin, it is a political masterstroke set to establish  Christianity as a world religion. Yet Jerome is his own worst  enemy, and his famously sarcastic wit quickly alienates the  ruling elite. As rumours circulate about his relations with the  beautiful widow Paula, as devoted to him as she is to his cause,  his enemies see their opportunity to dispose of Jerome once  and for all... Includes a Foreword by Richard Johnson, Emeritus Professor of  Classics, Australian National University. Joan O'Hagan is a crime writer and author of A Roman Death  (Macmillan 1988). Thanks to meticulous research, a wicked  imagination, and over thirty years of living in Rome, she  breathes new life into an ancient saint and his world, drawing  us irresistibly into a highly‐charged world of danger and  intrigue while reminding us to question our own values.

GARSINGTON REVISITED, a new book updating the legend of the flamboyant benefactor of the arts, Lady Ottoline Morrell. This book by SANDRA JOBSON DARROCH is a revised edition of her original biography of Ottoline first published in 1976 by Chatto & Windus and later in paperback. As well as being updated, the book contains hitherto unpublished information about Ottoline's "skeletons in her cupboard" as David Garnett called them. The book also includes a selection of vignettes or Interludes about the extraordinary people Sandra met and places she went to in the course of her years of research. After reading a preview copy of Garsington Revisited, the eminent biographer, Sir Michael Holroyd, wrote: "It's a book of real originality. All I can say is that it deserves both hands with their "Thumbs up!". With many congratulations, Michael." Sandra was fortunate to meet and interview the last living members of the Bloomsbury Group, enjoying lunch at Charleston with Duncan Grant, and offered a ship's tumbler of sherry by that other great Bloomsburyan, David Garnett. Sandra was stalked by the 7th Duke of Portland in the grounds of Welbeck Abbey, and journeyed to Texas to read more than 8,000 letters to Ottoline written by a "Who's Who" of Britain's literary and artistic elite (including 2,500 letters from her most persistent lover, Bertrand Russell, who was besotted with Ottoline). The book casts a new light on Ottoline's friendship with D.H. Lawrence and their falling-out after he portrayed her in Women in Love. Four decades on from her original book, which she wrote when still in her twenties, Sandra is as impressed as ever by Ottoline's courage and determination to forgo the comfortable life of an aristocrat to mix with - and champion - some of the 20th century's leading artists and writers.

Author Information Born in England, David Crawford migrated to Australia at the age of seventeen. Early employment included five years on a sheep station. Later, he became a field assistant on the rice research station at Humpty Doo outside Darwin. While there, David restarted his school studies, battling with childhood dyslexia. In time, he gained a place in university and later added a Master of Science degree to his Bachelor of Science. In the meantime, he got married, started a family, and worked as a technical officer in agriculture research. Moving on, David gained a teacher's qualification and taught high school science. His first teaching position was in the town of Hay, not far from where he mustered sheep all those years earlier. Available now for the start of the 2017/18 cricket season Welcome to the world of The Grade Cricketer. Described as the most original voice in cricket, The Grade Cricketer  represents the fading hopes and dreams of every ageing amateur sportsman.  In this tell‐all 'autobiography', The Grade Cricketer describes his cricketing career with unflinching honesty and plenty  of humour, in turn providing insights into the hyper‐masculine cricket 'dressing room'.  This one‐time junior prodigy is now experiencing the lean, increasingly existential years of adult cricket. Here, he  learns quickly that one will need more than just runs and wickets to make it in the alpha‐dominated grade cricket  jungle, where blokes like Nuggsy, Bruiser, Deeks and Robbo reign supreme.  Through it all, The Grade Cricketer lays bare his deepest insecurities ‐ his relationship with Dad, his fleeting romances  outside the cricket club ‐ and, in turn, we witness a gentle maturation; a slow realisation that perhaps, just maybe,  there is more to life than hitting 50 not out in third grade and enjoying a few celebratory beers afterwards.  Or is there?  The Grade Cricketer book is based upon the popular Twitter account, @gradecricketer, which has received critical  acclaim for its frighteningly honest portrayal of amateur cricket.  Now, the time has finally come for this middling amateur sportsman to tell his story in full.

Midnight Oil are one of the most 'Australian' rock bands this country has produced. Born from the Australian pub rock  scene that gave us AC/DC, Cold Chisel and INXS, the Oils were able to break out of that scene without compromising  themselves in any way.  Indeed, their breakthrough overseas record was the most Australian album they made. But it wasn't just the subject matter  that made them fiercely Australian; it was their stubborn independence, and their refusal to play the rock'n'roll game and  respect its rules and masters. But more than any of this is the adrenalin rush of an Oils show. Performances so intense that  witnesses swore they had seen the greatest Oils gig ever! Such was the belief that something so powerful could surely not  take place regularly.  When they took this overseas, audiences could often not understand a word they were saying, but musically they  recognised a common language: powerful, unadulterated live performances.  There is no band whose live shows are spoken of with the same awe as the Oils.

It's been a long and at times difficult journey for the man born Jeffrey Leo Newton. His seemingly normal world was turned on its head when at an early age he was diagnosed with Spina Bifida - many challenging and at times life threatening illnesses and long periods of hospitalisation followed. Despite this, his extra-ordinary singing talent soon surfaced. A child prodigy, he made his first professional appearance aged 5 singing at his Aunty Betty and Uncle Thomas' wedding. As a teenager, he did what many of us dream about and ran away from home, until a friendly policeman put him back on the straight and narrow. By age 15 he had secured a guest spot on Channel Nine's TV teen talent showcase, Opportunity Knocks, hosted by Desmond Tester, and appeared regularly on the show between 1961 and 1963. From an early age, he refused to see Spina Bifida as a disability or use it as an excuse to prevent him achieving his goals. Many things were beyond his control and with his mobility deteriorating in early 1965; he had no option but to exchange his leg calipers for crutches. This setback did little to deter him and he soon joined his first band. On record, Jeff St John is best remembered for scorching, brass-laden smash singles like "Big Time Operator" and "Teach Me How To Fly". At the peak of his popularity, Jeff underwent a series of complicated operations that resulted in loss of mobility and him becoming wheelchair-bound. Undeterred, Jeff soon returned to live performance and transformed what many saw as a 'liability' into his own trademark, executing 'wheelies' and 'pirouettes' across the stage as he sang. But beneath his successful public persona was a struggling soul striving to find love and overcome personal demons. Finally, unable to cope with the roller coaster of one broken relationship after another, he succumbed to self-doubt and attempted the ultimate act of self-criticism - suicide. His is a story of inspiration, passion, rocknroll, hit singles, fame, drugs, seances, broken marriages, self doubt, attempted suicide, triumph and finally true love...

The term 'Asian herbs and vegetables' describes a wide array of plants that are grown by Asian people and used by them in varying ways in what is loosely known as 'Asian cuisine'. The demand for Asian ingredients, including herbs and vegetables, has grown in the last ten years for several reasons. Ethnic diversity has increased. There has also been a greater emphasis on healthy foods, and the desire for added variety or something 'new' now drives many consumer choices. The purpose of this book is to introduce people from Western backgrounds to some of these 'new' herbs and vegetables and their associated panoply of new flavours, textures, shapes and scents. This book makes it possible to identify and grow these herbs and vegetables and suggests some of the ways they can be used.

The Melbourne Cup goes to the outback The race that stops the nation embodies everything that makes Australia great: Every underdog has a chance, and every Australian wants to support them. Melbourne author, Doug Bray has encapsulated the very spirit of this great race in his children’s story book: The Race That Stops The Outback. A small kangaroo, Rusty and the hero of the book, wants to run at The Outback Track which is our equivalent of The Flemington Race Course. However, the large kangaroo characters think that he’s too small to compete. Rusty doesn’t give up, he needs to learn how to walk before he can run. In fact he teaches himself to run! After training with the emus, Sammy the stork and The Frill neck lizard Rusty returns to the Outback Track – a colosseum of gum trees. “I love the celebration that surrounds The Melbourne Cup and how it does stop the nation. Everyone watches and listens or now I suppose streams it from where ever they are.” Doug says. “I think that emotion and even the festive atmosphere, plus the day off shows off our unique culture in Australia.” But the story is bigger than that. It’s about never giving up, life can be tough and that small can defeat big. As a teacher, Doug has jam-packed many life lessons into such a small book. The Race That Stops The Outback’s illustrations have the colour scheme that take its readers directly to our red centre with its contrasting clear blue sky. Look out for it in a book store this Spring carnival!

Gender equality in sport is a hot issue of our time, with the women's league in AFL being pushed this year and the prominence of issues surrounding gender equality in sport maintaining a bright spotlight in the media. Sport of Queens reveals the history of women in Australian horse racing from Wilhelmina 'Bill' Smith who secretly rode as a man at race meetings across North Queensland in the 1940's and 50's to the exploits and struggles of jockeys such as Linda Jones, Pam O'Neil and Beverley Buckingham in the 70's and 80's and the successes of women such as Clare Lindop, Gai Waterhouse, and Michelle Payne in more recent times. As well as an historic analysis, Sport of Queens contains eleven chapters each dedicated to a female racing legend in which she discusses the successes and challenges of her career and the issues she believes the racing industry currently faces. Jockeys, trainers, breeders, judges, syndicators, promoters, race-callers and photographers are all included. From a history of exclusion and a struggle for recognition to a slow acceptance in a maledominated industry, the race for women to be taken seriously may have turned for home but there's a long straight ahead. Also included is a section titled 'He Said, She Said' with quotes from men and woman that show the entrenched prejudices that still exist in racing alongside the progress being made. Through extensive research, interviews and with his own long history as a racing reporter to draw on, Shane McNally presents an in-depth look at what goes on behind the scenes in the industry in Australia compared to the rest of the world.

Melbourne during the depression. A seedy, corrupt city. Someone has struck at the heart of Australia's soul: they have killed the horse that would have won the Melbourne Cup. For what motive? Profit, blackmail, a betting scam? Only Tom Pink, the rider of the murdered horse can find out. Tom, born into the underworld he now tries to defeat, exposes graft and blackmail that reaches to the upper echelons of Melbourne society. His life and the lives of those he holds close will never be the same again. The Great Melbourne Cup Mystery, written in 1933, a year after the mysterious death of Phar Lap (winner of the 1930 Melbourne Cup) is a previously lost classic of Australian crime fiction.

24 horses lined up for the running of the 155th Melbourne Cup. At 100-1 Prince Of Penzance was the equal outsider, backed mainly by those hoping for a fairytale. A popular female jockey aboard when no woman had ever won the race before. A country bloke who had risen through the ranks from humble beginnings as a farrier in Stawell to become one of Australia's most successful and prolific trainers. 24 enthusiastic owners who had been following their horse all around Victoria from Stawell to Donald to Flemington. A New Zealand bred horse with a bargain price tag... Up against expensively bred stayers from Japan and Europe, horses owned by Sheikhs and millionaires. 100-1 shots are usually greeted back to scale with muted applause but there was a mighty roar for Prince Of Penzance... An extraordinary Melbourne Cup winner. A book about the background to the memorable 2015 Melbourne Cup... from the perspective of those behind the triumph and how they experienced the race that stopped two nations!

There is a touch of irony in the fact that Moonee Valley Racing Club's W.S. Cox Plate, billed as 'Australasia's weight-for-age championship', honours a man whose biggest race success was in a Handicap. Farmer cum racing entrepreneur, William Samuel Cox, won the 1875 Sydney Cup with Imperial, but it is because of his acumen as a racing administrator - and his role in developing the proprietary Moonee Valley racetrack on a former farm - that the race carries his name. First run in 1922, and worth ÂŁ1,000, the W.S. Cox Plate played second fiddle - in value and status - to the Moonee Valley Cup for more than 30 years, despite its honour roll of early winners including outstanding horses such as Nightmarch, Phar Lap, Chatham, Ajax, Tranquil Star, Flight and Hydrogen. It was not until 1956 that the Cox Plate Stake was elevated above that of the Moonee Valley Cup. Since then, the race has grown enormously in value (it was worth $3 million in 2002) and reputation. However, despite the massive shift in value and status of the race, there is one constant. Just as in its infancy, the tradition of only the best horses winning the Cox Plate continues. Champion winners such as Tobin Bronze, Surround, Dulcify, Kingston Town, Bonecrusher, Strawberry Road, Saintly, Might And Power, Sunline, So You Think and Adelaide not only enhanced their reputations by winning the race, they also added to the intrinsic merit of the Cox Plate as a championship event.

This is a book that all Victorian race-goers and punters of all sports will find an entertaining and absorbing read. Bookmaking has always been the most colourful and vibrant part of racing in Victoria. Betting on Victorian racecourses established the unique atmosphere that existed until the advent of Sky Channel, and the more recent rapid changes in technology, that has seen racecourses stripped of the big crowds that attended meetings throughout the state. This book tells the stories of Victoria's doyen bookies as well as the eccentric bookmakers who plied their trade against many of the great characters of the tracks. There are many colourful tales of bookies and punters, particularly in the good times where big rings existed, and spirited betting occurred on Victoria's racecourses. It tells the stories of the huge betting battles that took place on greyhound tracks, and the difficulty bookies had of winning at the "red hots," the changing landscape of sports betting, and the difficulty Victorian bookmakers had as they saw their clients slip through their fingers to the Darwin bookmakers, due to legislative inaction by successive State Governments.

Watching More Racehorses is the long-awaited sequel to Dr Geoffrey Hutson's original and ground-breaking book, Watching Racehorses. In this book Geoffrey takes his quest for the Holy Grail of punting, picking winners based on looks in the mounting yard to a new and higher level. Observations on over 50 new variables and a database of over 50,000 horses show that horsewatchers attending at the track and betting on behaviour enjoy a considerable and profitable advantage. Geoffrey also explores some of the issues confronting an ageing and serious fun punter, including coping with the unlikely contingency of monetary loss, the intelligence of horses, the lessons learnt from laying losers on Betfair, and the taxation of gambling winnings. Written in Geoffrey's inimitable style, Watching More Racehorses is a clear and highly entertaining guide to the art of behavioural handicapping. And his conclusion? Bet on bad behaviour. Bet on horses to lose!

Harness racing is a romantic quest by owners and trainers to find that elusive top horse. But it is also a successful industry where there are various other professions involved contributing to the overall picture of it being the most exciting horse sport of them all. You may believe you know each of these five greats, but it will become apparent there is so much more to them than you realised. The story of Jim Walsh takes you behind the scenes when he was taken on by the system in two countries, at one stage leading to death threats and violence involving prominent names. The leading administrators of the day banned his latest sulky, only to later see America claim it to be one of the major breakthroughs of the 20th century. Vin Knight was destined to be a handful for all who tried to compete with him. Despite his many remarkable triumphs, we later discovered there had been times when he had only been an impulse away from disaster. West Australian Mick Lombardo became a 24 carat phenomenon in owning and breeding. Yet, his previous life is a wonderfully warm and fascinating story about him when a young sea captain, and his part in the discovery of Australia's largest-ever gas and oil fields. This is the first ever detailed look behind the curtains of Rob Merola, a man who took SEW Eurodrive to the top in its field of expertise, and why he made the decision to sponsor harness racing in several States like no other commercial company ever has. He is a man who loves sharing winners with friends and newcomers to the sport. No one has ever previously written about the sheer genius of Bede Ireland, who used his remarkable talents to design some of the best harness racing tracks in the world, only to fall from grace in the eyes of our leading administrators. This talent has left behind a great legacy. But at what cost to the man himself?

No Australian sport has had a more interesting or colourful history than jumping racing. John Adams' Over the Hurdles tells the remarkable story of jumping in Australia, from the first Sydney steeplechase in 1832 to the sport's controversial battle for survival in recent years. In this first-ever history of jumping racing in Australia, Adams leads us on a beguiling tour of the horses, jockeys, racecourses, characters, and controversies of the past 180 years. The book recounts how professional jockeys came to replace amateur 'gentlemen' riders; how the sport boomed in its heyday, when Melbourne alone held 120 races a year; how the infamous criminal Squizzy Taylor tried to poison the 1924 Grand National favourite; how famed poet, Adam Lindsay Gordon rode a record three winners over the hurdles in one day; how a desperate crowd once killed a dishonest bookmaker at Flemington; how the sport strengthened ties between Australia and Ireland, the spiritual home of jumping; and how the falls, injuries, and deaths threatened its survival. The book captures the thrilling, courageous spirit of jumps racing. Riders, whether successful or not, universally state that there is no feeling like competing in a jumping race, whether they win or run last. But at the heart of Adams' history lie the deeds of magnificent horses that carried their jockeys to victory time and time again despite being burdened by large weights.. Redleap, Mosstrooper, Mountain God, Winterset, and Crisp earned mythical status in their eras, and Over the Hurdles ensures their achievements will never be forgotten. The Australian horses, jockeys and trainers have international reputations, but deserve wider appreciation in Australia.

When wildlife warrior Mr Crikey bursts into the classroom of Grade 6B wrestling a python, the students think the saviour of the local Swimming Hole has arrived. Mr Crikey sets about helping the students raise money to purchase the Swimming Hole, and the surrounding bushland, and save it from the hands of developers. However, their plans are thrown into disarray when suave businessman Benjamin Griffith rents out the class storeroom and subsequently purchases shares in the students. Griffith forces the students to work for him and turns the classroom into a money earning regime with initiatives such as 'walk-thru learning'. Will the students of Grade 6B be able to regain power of their classroom and save the Swimming Hole?

And they're off! A boy and a tortoise become fast friends as they prepare for the biggest event in town ‐ the monthly  tortoise race. It's not winning that counts, but that won't stop this tortoise from being the fastest tortoise on the block!

Author Information Michael has worked in the building industry for over 30 years, running his own business for the last 20 of those years. He had an interest in writing as a teenager but had not taken that interest any further until his then 9 year old son Rex became a keen reader, and encouraged him to re-visit a poem he had written many years before. With some reworking, The Fastest Tortoise poem became a children’s story. Illustartors Information Naya and Kostya Lazarev are a duo of illustrators. Their skills round each other out, creating picture books full of love and magic. As a child, Naya decided to become an illustrator of children’s books. Since then she has been mastering her watercolor technique, hoping to shape people’s perception of the world from a very young age. As a professional art conservator, Kostya always has some tips and tricks to improve his wife’s technique. Reviewing the results of their collaboration on ‘Cody the Pony’, they decided to work together. In her spare time, Naya teaches children to use their imagination while creating their first pictures, and Kostya masters his skills as an art conservator-restorer. Together they are Bookwook Illustrators, a couple that dedicate their life to art and creativity.

Nina loves to visit her aunts, because they have a very magical friend. The Magic Mail Fairy! When Nina goes to stay  with her aunts for an especially long visit, she discovers the joys of receiving and writing letters with the help of her  aunts and her new magical pen pal.

Author Information Sonia is a truly pure soul. She lives by her principles and tries to inspire them in others, by being a passionate mum, teacher, journalist, writer and architect, too. Of course, she cannot do all this alone, so she has a group of fairies and elves to give her support. With this book, Sonia shows that there is magic all around us. We just have to start looking at the world through our children’s eyes. We are the ones who put limits to our own imagination. Sonia helps us set our creativity free with magic and joy. Sonia is from Italy, and after world-wandering, she now lives in Australia. Illustrator Information Francesca has been illustrating for fifteen years and is passionate about hearing and telling stories. Not only stories that end up in books, but also personal stories about everyday people. It is from these stories that her ‘customised illustrations’ project was born. Francesca lives in a small city in southern Italy and her designs can be found all over the world. She works to promote reading in adults and children alike.

Illustrator Information Katherine Appleby is an illustrator, artist and designer inspired by nature and intrigued by the endless possibilities of human imagination. She works across multiple artistic disciplines, including watercolour, acrylic and digital mediums, to create work that is meticulous, whimsical and colourful in nature … with a just a touch of quirkiness. Katherine has a Bachelor of Creative Arts with Distinction from the University of Southern Queensland, with a double major in Visual Arts and in Marketing. With an interest in design, she also completed a Certificate IV in Graphic Design and is currently working through the Diploma. In 2014, she was awarded the Golden Key International Honour Society award for Visual and Performing Arts (Painting). Katherine’s work has been published in various magazines, including the Australian Artist’s Palette (issue no. 137), and she is thrilled to have illustrated the work for children’s book 'Little Sower Samuel'.

'Mrs Mavis Marshmallow likes the colour yellow ‐ a lot!' Join Mrs Mavis and friends in this sunny rhyming book about a very colourful character... so long as that colour is  yellow!

Author Information Cheryl Ann Knights sold her optometry practices in 2014 to pursue her passion for writing books. She is the author of 'The Cooper Chronicles' and is currently enjoying writing the sequel 'The Cooper Chronicles 2: The Inhabitors'. 'Mrs Mavis Marshmallow and the Colour Yellow' is the first book in a series of books Cheryl has written aimed at teaching young children about colours in a manner they would enjoy. Her two grown up children and four grandchildren also live nearby. She adores animals and has become an animal activist. Cheryl always loves to hear from her readers. You can reach her on her website cherylannknights.com.au. She is active on Goodreads and her twitter account is @cheryl_knights
