Easter Day He is risen. Alleluia! He calls us to new life in Him!!!

April, 2010

Getting ready to be ready There is always a lot to do to get ready for Holy Week — preparing programs, rehearsing music, ordering palms. And the list goes on. All of these activities point toward the very moving liturgies that take place from Palm Sunday to Easter. Of course, in another sense, the six-week season of Lent is also meant to be a time of getting ready for Holy Week. We are instructed to pray, study scripture, fast, and attend worship as a way to focus ourselves on Jesus’ acceptance of his suffering and death in order to ransom us from sin. But what are we really getting ready for? We are preparing ourselves to be receptive to the many ways God can speak to our hearts during Holy Week. We are opening our minds to the words of scripture which remind us that the story of those who betrayed Jesus—disciples, officials, the crowd—is not so different from the ways we betray him. We are getting our senses attuned to the nonverbal parts of the worship — the motions, the colors, the music. At a fundamental level we are getting ready, so that we will recognize the presence of God in the worship and in new and renewed ways in our lives. The preparations for Holy Week, as well as the liturgies of Holy Week themselves, help us to be attentive to God’s activity in the world every day. Then we can be open to receiving God into our lives on Easter and throughout the year. Blessings and Peace And the new life of Easter Each day of the year,

Can you watch with me one hour? In remembrance of Jesus’ anguish in facing his death, we maintain a prayer vigil from 9 p.m. Maundy Thursday until the beginning of the Good Friday liturgy at noon. We pray in one-hour shifts. The sign-up sheet will be posted on the bulletin board in the narthex.

Good Friday Offering Supports The Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East Every year on Good Friday, pilgrims from all over the world gather to walk along the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. Some carry a cross, to understand better the nature of the burden that Jesus bore. Others accompany them, as witnesses, as penitents, as believers. St. John’s supports the ministries of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East through the Good Friday Offering. Place your donation in your Good Friday envelope or drop a check in the plate marked “Good Friday Offering” and help support this important ministry.
