E N GAGI NG   TODD KUCKKAHN EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR                                     While it is the wedding expo season, when we talk about engagement it is of a different variety. In the Portage County Business Council’s (PCBC) mission, vision and values, we list engagement as one of the six key values of how we operate. Hopefully, we express our engagement by listening to the important priorities from members and engaging change. Listening harkens back to leadership, the value I shared some insight into last month. Now in our third year of our value based membership model, we have sharpened our focus on listening and bringing you those benefits that fit what you need as a growing business in Portage County.

One member benefit for aspire and engage members is our bi-annual executive roundtables. The leadership of those businesses gather for lunch with NO agenda and NO PCBC staff present. It gives them the chance to discuss community challenges and opportunities in a safe setting. Out of a recent roundtable came an important topic for our community, housing. If we are to retain and attract the talent necessary to keep our

businesses, organizations, schools and government prospering, we will need the housing to meet their needs. Those last three words are important: “meet their needs”. Our inventory of housing options to meet the needs of young professionals, mature families and everyone in between, is critical. As a leader of economic development in our community, PCBC decided to get the right people at the table to have a conversation around the topic. Besides those businesses at the roundtable, we also brought together representatives from government, realtors and property management. The lively conversation proved valuable to those in attendance.

The conversation included the need for temporary housing for those new to the community, expected outcomes from the city’s housing study (Study HERE), expanding Mid-State’s reach with the possibility of student housing, housing for internships, government regulation related to rental property and the housing inventory. Maybe most importantly, it was important for each of the representatives in attendance to hear the challenges and opportunities that existed from

other people’s perspective. Since then, there have been several conversations on how to meet these challenges. Engagement will be a cornerstone at the upcoming New ERA Workshop 2.0.(Event HERE) We will learn what has been accomplished since the last workshop and develop priorities that need to be addressed related to quality of life in our community. Among others, Alec Mancheski, iame clothing, will share his perspective from a young entrepreneur in our community. Successful entrepreneurs must be engaged and willing to listen, sometimes to the hard facts. PCBC has developed a series of focus groups to listen to the business community and learn what needs to be changed for their growth. The first business retention expansion initiative focused on agriculture. On April 4, manufacturing (Event HERE) will be the focus with other sectors in line throughout the summer. As we learn of challenges during these engagements, we will share them appropriately with those who need to know in the community. We would welcome the opportunity to engage and listen to you about how we can become a better change agent in Portage County. This is your County and we value what you have to say.

Business Council Honors Businesses & Industry Leaders

T h e A c t i v e Vo i c e |

Two Portage County businesses and two industry leaders were singled out for honors on Wednesday, January 31st at the Portage County Business Council’s Annual Dinner. The event was held at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center, Stevens Point with a crowd of nearly 400 people! Each year Business Council members, guests and dignitaries gather to celebrate the best of the best in volunteers, businesses, education, government, and non-profit organizations. The Annual Dinner is a celebration of past accomplishments and it is an opportunity to recognize the achievements of the past year. We thank all those that attended the event, to our sponsors and to our silent auction contributors. Your support is greatly appreciated! Ambassador of the Year Pete Theisen Pete has been active in the Ambassador Club since December of 2016. His enthusiasm and dedication towards volunteering for the Portage County Business Council is outstanding! He was one of five Ambassadors that accumulated the most points during the year by attending business events such as ribbon cuttings, grand openings, ground breaking ceremonies, Business After Hours and many other events, visits to new and existing businesses and monthly meetings. Pete has definitely exceeded the membership requirements of the Ambassador Club and was voted on by his Ambassador Friends as our Ambassador of the Year! Members of this enthusiastic group generally lend a hand whenever they see something that needs doing. Last year alone, Pete and the entire Club gave back over 1,700 hours of volunteer time just for the Portage County Business Council. Pete is the Vice President of Commercial Lending at the Portage County Bank. Besides his involvement with the Business Council, Pete gives back to the community in many ways. He is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Stevens Point Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Treasurer of the Stevens Point Noon Optimist Club Member of the Izaak Walton Conservation Club, a Wisconsin DNR Hunter Education Instructor, Learn to Hunt Mentor, Blackhawks Archery member, Wisconsin Bow Hunters member and Past Director of the Plover Area Business Association. Small Business of the Year – Community First Bank Community First Bank, 5525 US 10 East, Stevens Point received the Small Business of the Year Award.Community First Bank has experienced $100 million dollars of assets as of December 31, 2017, which can be attributed to community support, an

2018

ongoing goal to provide exceptional levels of customer service, a full range of products and services, and retention of quality staff! The bank has serviced the Stevens Point community since 1985. It was founded in 1904 as the State Bank of Rosholt, founded by John Gilbert Rosholt and three of his sons. During the depression, the bank purchased the Elderon State Bank due to their financial troubles. After the bank expanded its footprint to Stevens Point, it changed its name as to not limit their business opportunities throughout the county, along with the inspiration of its philosophy of putting the Community First. Their dedicated staff demonstrates their commitment to the community daily and it is evident through donations, involvement and support to many organizations including, but not limited to the Portage County Business Council and the Ambassadors Club, Partners in Education, Leadership Portage County, Plover Area Business Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, YMCA, Salvation Army, Rotary, Optimist, Kiwanis & Lions Clubs, Boys & Girls Club of Portage County, The Humane Society of Portage County, Golden Sands Home Builders Association, CAP Services and many others. In addition, in 2001 the bank committed to give scholarships to Rosholt and Stevens Point seniors. Their commitment to our youth is $1 million dollars and though they have not reached that goal yet, they will by 2031. Their hope is that one day those recipients will lead Portage County to being an even better place than it is today. Congratulations to the team of Community First Bank! Decree of Excellence Award – Aspirus Stevens Point Campus Aspirus’ commitment to improving health care choices for patients in this market is supported by more than doubling the size of the Stevens Point campus with a new 40,000 sq. ft. addition that was completed November, 2017. The addition includes a new and expanded walk-in care unit, enhanced imaging capabilities and a hospitalgrade surgery center to accommodate more extensive and involved surgical procedures. The second phase of the project includes an expansion of the current clinic space to accommodate a full service reference Lab, expanded imaging services, including mammography, bone density and additional ultra-sound capabilities, an improved primary care suite, as well as tripling the space for specialty care. The most exciting portion of this phase of the project is the addition of a free-standing Emergency Department. The new Emergency Department will bring an additional 30 professional 7 positions into the community.

T h e A c t i v e Vo i c e | 2 0 1 8 All of these improvements and additions will allow Aspirus to offer comprehensive healthcare to their patients. People seeking health care in the Stevens Point, Plover and surrounding communities will have access to high quality, compassionate care. All of these enhancements will be in place by July, 2018. Ongoing commitment to the community through the business and staff is evident through donations, involvement and support to many organizations including, but not limited to the Portage County Business Council, City of Stevens Point and Department of Parks & Recreation, Stevens Point Youth Baseball, Softball and Hockey Associations, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Boys and Girls Club of Portage County, Plover Kiwanis Club, YMCA, and Stevens Point Public Schools just to name a few. With their expansions Aspirus Stevens Point Campus will serve as a solid anchor of this community for years to come. We look forward to seeing what is next! The President’s Award - Keith Pilger, Attorney and Partner of the law firm Anderson O’Brien. He has made his mark as one of our communities most respected and influential leaders. Keith is a pillar of our community. He has been involved in many charitable endeavors and spent countless hours volunteering his time to better Portage County. Keith has been a trusted Portage County Business Council Board of Director, Past President and has been an integral part of the Council’s Executive Committee and Economic Development Committee. With over 12 years of experience at Anderson O’Brien, Keith has been dedicated to providing the best service possible

practicing in the areas of business, real estate and estate planning. He is known for his professionalism and is respectful of others without fail. Keith assists many of the firm’s business clients addressing a wide range of services including business succession planning, business formation, commercial real estate transactions, corporate and partnership law, buy-sell agreements, lease agreements, contracts, sale and purchase agreements, registration of trademarks, and assist individuals preparing their Wills, Trusts and other estate planning documents. Keith’s community involvement has included dedication to the Portage County Business Council, Boys and Girls Club of Portage County, YMCA Foundation Past Board member and Past Chair, Plover Area Business Association and member of Community Development Committee, as well as board member of Saint Michael’s Hospital Foundation. Keith was presented the Gerald M. O’Brien Leadership Award in 2016 to recognize him as providing exceptional leadership and service to the Stevens Point Area YMCA. Keith joined the YMCA Foundation Board in 2006 and served on the Executive Committee first as Treasurer, then Chair-Elect, Chair and Past Chair. He also served as Chair of their golf outing event, raising over $20,000 and as key advisor in negotiations to purchase Y Camp Glacier Hollow. Keith Pilger has been a true partner in growing Portage County. We are pleased to have him choose Portage County as the place to ‘make a difference’….because indeed, he has!!! He is loved as a friend, son, husband and father, respected as an executive and we are all proud of his accomplishments!
