WELCOME

Photography is my passion. It is my exhale. This magazine is a collection of exhales.

Editor's Notes Hello! Welcome to the Start Up Issue of POPPN Magazine. My career path has not always been peaches and cream. I have been through the proverbial trenches and back many times and have since arrived here. This journey has created my storybook. The way that I see it, is that other people like me have a story to tell too. A raw, unobstructed, beautiful story. A lot of this emotion is often reflected through the work of a photographer. Although it can be reflected in their work, the story behind the lens fades away.

businesses, and the inspiration are all part of the big picture. We have drawn photographers and creatives from all over the world looking to have their work seen. It is incredible to know that although we may be on different continents of the world, we all simply want the same thing...acknowledgement. We want an opportunity to express ourselves creatively and connect with others with similar passions. We are a community and it's time that the world sees us for not only our talents, but the person we have become because of it.

POPPN is the opportunity to showcase the work of photographers while also sharing their stories. Who is this person behind the camera? What is their story? How did they end up here? Although a photographer may be seasoned, the burnt ends and beginnings of the story remain untold. Until now.

This is one beautiful step forward. Hope you like it. Cheers

Not only are we sharing stories of the photographer, but the industry behind it as well. The MUAHs, the models, the studios, the

"When I started this, I didn't think it would be possible. I have had so many failures and so many defeats that I thought this too would be another to add to the list. But when we started putting it all together something magical happened. I found my calling. And I knew I couldn't lose. Not this time. I want people to know that following your dream is not so crazy after all." Sarah Sharp Editor-in-Chief, POPPN MAG @SHARPLANDIA

We enlisted the help of fashion maven Courtney Leonard of Midge x Courtney Leonard to complete the look. Courtney made several custom fashion & jewelry pieces that fit like a glove! Courtney's fashion designs are not only beautiful, but they are also repurposed and good for the environment. She puts an extraordinary amount of care and energy into each design which makes her work exceptional. Each piece is one of a kind, hand stiched, dyed, and designed with love.

WHY 80S?

POPPN Magazine tends to subscribe to an retro inspired aesthetic. Our biggest event of the year is The POP Awards and this year's theme was 1984 purple. We decided to embrace the theme and do a wild, fun, girly, 80s photo shoot for content to promote the awards and also produce content for this start-up issue of POPPN. Like what you see? Let us know what you want us to do next.

AWARENESS YOU CAN WEAR NE W L A BA SED FA SHI O N L ABEL IS GIVING BACK HELPING IMMIGRANTS THROUGH THEIR DOPE S T R E E T W E A R L I N E , N O B O DY. IS.ILLEGAL INTERVIEW BY SAR AH SHARP

P: What City are you based in? N: South Central Los Angeles P: Before starting this business, what did you do? N: I'm (def.sound) in a constant state of becoming and unraveling but my main mediums are poetry and music. Hossien Salamy, who is the co founder does film production and artist managment P: Why did you choose fashion as a medium to make a statement and create change? N: I (def.sound) wanted to meet people where they are. So I started putting my lyrics on my clothing. It just so happens my lyrics are politically charged. No.Body.Is.illegal. is a chant I would have people say at my shows. I started to wear it and realized there was a demand for clothing with meaningful messages on them. I'm just glad it resonates. P : Where does your style/fashion inspiration come from? (ie: old school hip-hop, streetwear, vintage?)

18

N: We are inspired by Streetwear and whats comfortable. The statement "No.Body.Is.Illegal." isn't a comfortable one for some people so I think the materials should be. We want whatever you put on your body to feel and I S Slook U E # 1 good, W W W.as S T Uwell D IO - S TA O asN DA beR Da. Cconversation.

P: You make a bold statement in your brand, why is this statement so important and why do you stand firmly behind it? N: We (Hossien and I )are both 1st generation children of immigrants, so this message is an important one that hits very close to home. The body itself is a politic. I think if we start to unpack the fact that all borders are man-made and inhumane we will start to decolonize the conversation about who and what is illegal and why. It's not just about Spanish immigrants who we are as world citizens, it's about questioning the structures that oppress and divide us all. P: Beside purchasing from your brand, what else can people do to fight for change? N: Besides decolonizing your wardrobe and supporting us on NOBODYISILLEGAL.shop, we ask that all of our supporters also donate directly to our partner organization CARECEN who we donate 10% of every sale to (carecen-la.org). They are a central American immigrant advocacy organization who have been doing that good grassroots work since 1983. Tap in w/ them for sure.

t r o pp u S

N: It's not what you do it's the intention you put behind it. NO . BODY . IS . ILLEGAL . synthesizes mantra, fashion, and activism in a timely way that meets people where they are. Designed by Def Sound & visual artist Zoe Zoe Shine these hoodies are an act of decolonization, amplifying the undeniable truth that all boundaries are artificial, none of them are natural, and the separation of families is an inhuman act. Your body is a politic, you don't need to be political stand up for and with oppressed people. This is the first garment created for the COLORED album. Not only is it merchandise with meaning, but Def is making sure that 10% of each sale goes to an immigration advocacy organization (CARECEN) doing great and generational grassroots work. The most powerful things we can create are conversations. NO.BODY.ISILLEGAL is awareness you can wear.

Moisture, moisture, MOISTURE. Moisturizer is always really important before you start applying foundation, because it will make everything apply evently and seamlessly to the face.

If you are playing with colorful eyeshadow, be sure to have a tacky base. Aka don't set your eue primer (it won't stick) and your eyeshadow will gradually lose it's color throughout the day.

AFTER-HOURS

SUMMER CAMP INSPO Many of us have fond memories of summer vacation. The smell of campfire coals, the yellow haze of a summer sunset, the feeling of freezing cold lake water touching your skin... Ahhhhh summer camp. What would it be like to step back in time and experience the glory days of camp all over again? We don't know either. But we sure had fun reenacting it at our first ever CAMP shoot. Inspired by the feeling, textures, sounds, and experiences of summer camp, we gathererd the Portland community of creatives and made magic happen. Photographers, models, dancers, make-up artists, all came together with no plan and simply collaborating our talents. It is always a treat when we can simply create, rather than "do business." And... IT.... WAS... A SUMMER HIT.

What does this have to do with photography and art?

AFTER-HOURS

EVERYTHING POP Media Group, the brains behind POPPN Magazine did something sort of... weird. We partnered up with Armor Bearer Protective Services and Tom Sollitt Marketing to create an invitation only, photography competition for local photographers. How does that work? We didn't know either until we actually did it. Terry Brown, Founder and President of Armor Bearer Protective Services (ABPS), along with his Vice President, Will Goldsborough, were looking to rebrand the company. To carry out this mission, they needed a new “look. To that end, Terry and Will in coordination with Tom Sollitt their Brand Consultant turned to (POPPN Magazine). We thought it would be great to have multiple photographers shoot all at once, with ABPS deciding on the vibe they were looking for. We invited some of our photographer friends out for an invitation only photography contest where they could win cash prizes. Although the money was nice, we all had a great time collab ing, eating VooDoo Donuts and being creative. The winner of the contest was Jide Dada. His images will be used on Armor Bearer's marketing materials. Armor Bearer is a Portland and Sacramento based protection agency and consulting firm. You can visit them at armorbps.com You can see Jide Dada's work @jdadaphotography on instagram.

Tips for

Branding Clients

O N E — Listen to your Client At the end of the day, as photographers we work for the client. They should have a general idea for what they are a looking for. Make sure the images you take represent their image well.

T W O — Get Creative Depending on the client's needs, you need to make sure that these branding images stand out! Think about things that you can do to get people talking, generate consumer trust, and give you the credibility you want and need to land more clients in the future.

T H R E E — Give the Client Variety Chances are the client will be using these images on their social media channels. Try to take some behind the scenes images, flat-lays, and unique backdrops to give the client some images they can use to please their followers! More followers = happy client. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRISTINA STROUD WRIT TEN BY SARAH SHARP FA SHIONS BY MID GE X COUR T NE Y LEONAR D HAIR & MAKE-UP BY ANGELA FOSTER

What is it like to interview an award winning photographer? Let me share the dirt. Normally on a Saturday morning, I would be watching cartoons with my young kids or cooking a full breakfast. But this particular Saturday was anything but ordinary. There was a certain energy in the air that was just… different. At 9:30am I walk into ETC Eatery in SW Portland for a special breakfast meeting. I came in armed in a leather jacket, red plaid shirt and tall heels to give me that edge that I hoped would project as businessy but still cool vibe. With absolutely no plan, I head into my interview with the first ever best overall POP Award winner, Mandy Tillitson. At 10am I hear a simple, “SARAH?!” And just like that a new friendship was made. Mandy, the tall, beautiful, and sweet photographer that won it all shared her story as I stuffed my face with french toast, and she had a savory breakfast sammie. It was an easy connection as we already had so much in common. Just 2 moms and 2 business owners, who share a love of photography. Since we were so comfortable with one another, it was easy to peel back the layers of her story beyond the lens.

California born and bred, Mandy, comes from an artistic background. At a young age, she started her career hanging onto her grandfather’s coattails following him around at weddings as his default second shooter. It seems like destiny that she would follow her photography path into adulthood. As one of 8 children, Mandy has been caring for newborn babies her entire life. This knowledge and level of comfort with newborns is evident in her work. Mandy started her professional photography business 11 years ago and her business is booming! Newborn photography is one of the fastest growing industries due to the increase in social media platforms like Instagram. It is now more important than ever for new parents to get the perfect shot of their newborn baby. However, one cannot just use any newborn photographer to get this shot. Clients should select photographers with knowledge and expertise like that of Mandy Tillitson. The entire newborn shoot is an experience from the second you book her. You can see the quality in not only her work but also in her customer service and relationships she builds with her clients.

"I p ro m i s e d t o d o t h i n g s I l o v e d . Wi t h t h a t , m y b u s i n e ss fl o u ri s h e d ." Although we have a ways to go, we are living in a time in a culture where authenticity and positivity are more prevalent than ever before. Mandy mentioned early on that she was “a big girl” and that she loves her body and how it looks but that she’s hard to dress. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. When preparing for this shoot, I contacted a friend and collegue, Courtney Leonard of MIDGE to see if we could collaborate on clothing for this shoot. Courtney is a master at dressing any body type and can repurpose just about any

piece of fashion you can think of. We quickly agreed that an 80s theme would be PERFECT for this shoot. I was thrilled with the idea. Mandy said that she was open to whatever we thought was best so we rolled with it and it was a smashing hit! As someone who deems herself “unfashionable” we would beg to differ. She was MADE to slay these pieces.

BEST OVERALL WINNING IMAGE P O P AWA R D S 2018

2018 B E S T O V E R A L L W I N N I N G I M AG E

Feeling Sexier than Ever P: You mentioned that people often perceive you as conservative, however, you actually love your sexy side. Explain what makes you feel sexy and makes you the badass photographer and business woman that you are. M: Yes! People say I am so calm and conservative, haha! I guess that's my professional side. And I love that side of me. But... the rest of me is loud, funny, sexy, and a lot of fun! I have a very open mind, so this helps in my career and woring with women. I often am told I make people feel comfortable. I feel sexiest when I can show off my curves. Also I am with my husband, he makes me feel amazing. And although there are little things I would like to change for health, I love my body and who I am.

P: How and why should other women tap into their sexy sides? Be around people that make you feel good. Or when you're with yourself just enjoy all you got! Get dressed up, get in front of a camera, and shine!

P: You have such a beautiful marriage. What keeps your relationship going despite the ups and downs of life? M: We love each other's imperfections. We forgive each other. We keep each other on a pedastool. The second you feel like you are better than you're spouse is when things fall a part. P: You mentioned previously that you had suffered the loss of a child. How has this impacted you and your photography career? M: Losing my daughter was the most painful experience I have ever had. But I promised to live the life she would never get to, in honor of her. I promised to do things I loved. With that, my business flourished.

P: Your business is BOOMING! Give your best advice to a new photographer starting out. Dont compare your beginning to someone else's middle! Nothing happens over night. Let it build.

P: Tell us a silly fact about you that would surprise someone. M: I wanted to be a playboy photographer!

P: How has this experience being in front of the lens for a magazine cover impacted you? M: Having this amazing opportunity has put a pep in my step. POP Awards came right at my 10 years in business, and validated all the work I had been doing over that time. Being pampered, photographed and loved has been one of the most wonderful experiences for me. I want to pay it forward. I want to see more women artists shine, especially in the photography industry and if I can be an example for that, I am happy.

P: Describe your winning image that earned you the cover! (Where was it taken, camera used, camera settings, etc.) M: My winning image was taken in West Linn Oregon on a client's property. The sun came through so beautifully and created a halo of light around her. I used my Canon 5D Mark iii, and my 200mm lens (which I saved 8 years for). I was most likely on 1000/100 F2.0 Iso 800. (Very common manual settings for me) kelvin was prob around 6200.

AFTER HOURS

The Greatest ofAll Time There is a difference between good and great, and great is Fernanda Montenegro. She is a critically acclaimed brazillian actress and is often regarded as the greatest Brazilian actress of all time. She is the only brazillian nominated for an academy award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1998 film Central Station. Brazillian based photographer, Isadora Tracerri had the privilege to photograph her at one of her events. She took a grayscale approach to capture her essense without the fluff of color. Her brilliance speaks for itself. Find Isadora on Instagram @isadoratricerri Link to Central Station trailer on poppnmag.com

S AN DS : MO M ENTS OF T I ME OR O F O N E ' S LIFE When you go to dictionary.com there are various definitions for sand. The one that stood out the most was the one above.

Even more striking was their example of how to use 'sands' in a sentence. It says, " At this stage of his career the sands have run out." It seemed like a fitting statement, as many artists feel that the last grains of sand have fallen in their careers. The thing is, we are not the sand... we are the hourglass. Let's create art that can withstand the test of time. Model: Lily Hennings @thatsolilay Styling: Boneyard PDX creator, Chloe Kramer @boneyardpdx Assisted By: Vanessa Pearson @vanessa.pearson
