Poornima Bargotra Portfolio. Life is too short to focus on one thing. Design is infinite. It is almost impossible to master all, but it is possible to experience all. So why not learn and get inspired by every aspect of design? Why constrain? My name is Poornims Bargotra and I am a Landscape Architect living in Singapore.
When one enters the mist of Marina Bay, they encounter a strong strength of vibrancy. Everything around looks vivid making it easy for one to distinguish among each building. With hotels (Marina Bay Sands, Fullerton) Entertainment facilities (Esplanade, Singapore Fyler) Commercial spaces (CBD area) and eateries, this part of Singapore is more or less a ‘dramatic’ place.
1 Casuarina equisetifolia
2 Terminalia mantaly and Dillenia indica
THE IDEA I began to explore Marina Bay as a ‘circus of buildings’ and therefore my main intention became to contrast this with a ‘circus of plants’ creating ‘islands of ecosystems’ to contrast ‘buildings of programs’
ISLAND creating small ecosystems
TROPICS setting the ‘contrast’

Over the years the railway corridoe has acquired a rich patina of history as a transport WOODLANDS& link. It also highlights collective memory of people who have travelled to and from Singapore; either out of necessity or in search of adventure, romance and discovery.
Concept of movement and a mobile landscape
Units unite to form linear spaces

Different size units- Different functions
THE IDEA How can the linearity of this site, the bio diversity and the ‘feel’ merge with a design of an edible landscape, that wishes to wind through efortlessly? How can the original railway track be restored and used for the upbringing of edible landscape? How can we, nomads benefit from this through our daily recreational activities?
Moving the various units to create a different space
The different units serve different functions: 1. Outdoor market area for farmers, farming enthusiasts and the likes to sell their organic vegetables 2. Outdoor gallery/ educational areas with temporary exhibitions, and screenings
Singapore has been striving to be a place where one can express themselves in terms of culture, history and the arts. Arts itself is a broad range and has many forms. Music is one such form that is dear to all and everyone appreciates it. THE IDEA The main intent is to create a space where musicians can feel free to express themselves; to create a sense of one-ness among musicians and bridge the overpowering gap. Many a times we find an urge to express ourselves but we can’t due to circumstances. What if there was a place where one can do anything under the sun? Where one can ponder. Where one can live. “Colourful expressions” translates this factor into a space. THE IDEA The idea of ‘cracks’ from the ground is used as a metaphor for hidden talent. These cracks are manupulated in a way as to bring out various programs and activities.
