Thank you... …for expressing an interest in the sixth form provision here at Poole High Senior School. Whether you will be taking BTEC Firsts or Diplomas, Applied A-level or regular A-level, or you are studying for your English or Maths GCSE, we welcome you to study with us. We are an extremely friendly and successful Senior School that serves its pupils well. We are highly ambitious for all of our learners, and we expect you to be too. This whole next episode of your life is important academically and develop mentally for you as a person. Our aim is to do this in partnership with you successfully.

Using this prospectus This booklet contains general information about how we operate, and what you can expect from Poole High. As information about courses is being updated every year, and new courses are coming on line, there is a CD-ROM in the back pocket, which you can insert into your computer to find out more about the subjects you are interested in.

What is life like here? Senior School life is very different from anything you have experienced before. You must realise from the start that even though you are studying less subjects than you did at GCSE, there is more work involved and at an even more challenging level. Some of you will be clear about where they are going; others will not have any set idea of where they are heading. We think that we are the right sixth form for you, whether you want a head start in employment or you are off to further training or education.

Choosing a programme of study...1 Each file on the accompanying CDROM, or the files downloadable from our website gives you details of the subject, its level, and details of how it is assessed. You may only choose a maximum of one subject from each block. The letters in the top right corner indicate the option block it belongs to; for example, A level Business Studies can either be studied in option block B or E. A “+” sign indicates that it occupies more than one block on the timetable. A subject with e.g. B+C+D next to it indicates that by choosing this option, you cannot make another choice in any of B, C or D, as there will be a clash.

Each student will have different requirements. The best questions to ask yourself at this important time are: • What am I good at? • What do I enjoy? • What level should I be studying at? • Where do I want to be after sixth form? Level of subject I t is important to know the terminology. LEVEL 1 – foundation level – this is equivalent to GCSE grades D and below LEVEL 2 – intermediate level – this is equivalent to GCSE grades C and above LEVEL 3 – advanced level – A level courses and equivalent

Choosing a programme of study...2 What is important and what should I be equipped with? You should be studying at the next level up from that which you have already achieved. For example, if you have an average GCSE grade of a C or above (across all or most of your subjects) you have achieved at Level 2, and most probably need to be studying an Advanced Level course (Level 3). You will need high graded Level 3 qualifications and Maths and English at Level 2 to move on to a Degree at University.
What levels of course does Poole High provide?

The courses we offer at level 2 are GCSE’s and BTEC 1st Diplomas. At level 3 we offer mainly A-levels and some BTEC National Diplomas, Certificates and Awards. A BTEC First Diploma is worth 4 GCSE’s grade A*-C (Level 2) A BTEC National Award, Certificate and Diploma is worth 1, 2 and 3 A levels respectively.
Poole High School is committed to offering an open and inclusive sixth form provision. Whatever you are interested in, we are sure there is a course for you. We will never force you to opt for anything that you do not wish to take, but we will advise you if we consider your choices to be unwise. At the beginning of the academic year, we run a Course Information Evening so that you and your parents are well aware of the expectations of the course, and when all of the important deadlines and dates are.

Some examples of choices...1 Josh wants to work in the Police Force. He managed to achieve 1 grade B and 3 grade C’s at GCSE, with a D in Maths, but a C in English. He is also keen to continue studying fitness, after achieving the grade B at GCSE PE. Josh’s programme of study is BTEC First Diploma in Public Services (Level 2), retake of Maths GCSE and AS level PE. His course will last one year and he is hoping to continue either to Level 3 Public Services or apply for the police force at the end of the year.
Glen achieved 7 B grades and 2 C grades at GCSE, with a BTEC First Certificate in ICT. He is interested in following the Business Studies route. Glen came from another school as he had heard that Poole High was a Specialist Business and Enterprise College. He secured a B in English and a B in Maths. Glen wants to study a Business Studies degree near London and then move into a job in the city. Glen’s programme of study is Business Studies, BTEC National Award in Finance (complete with 6 week internship in the summer of year 12), Economics and ICT, all at A level (Level 3). Glen is undecided whether he wants to study ICT or Economics to AS only, but he will make that decision after his AS results come through. He does not know which University he might want to study at, but he has sat down with the sixth form team at Poole High and knows before his course starts that most of his preferred Universities are seeking B and A grades at A level.
Sarah has always wanted to work with children at a level where she can run her own child care and well-being centre. She wants to study for a degree in Child Psychology, and is leaving her options open so that she can change her mind. She achieved 2 A*, 3 A, 3 B and 4 C grades at GCSE, including English and Maths. Her A* grades were in RE, Psychology with an A in Child Development and Sociology. She needs B in Psychology at A level, as part of the 200 UCAS points she must get to go to the University of her choice. Sarah’s programme of study is an Applied A level in Health and Social Care (worth 2 A levels, Level 3) with a placement, Psychology and Sociology. She intends to follow Sociology to AS in Year 12, and then concentrate on H&SC and Psychology in Year 13.

Some examples of choices...2 Louise was the top achiever in her year group with 5 A* and 7 A grades at GCSE. She would like to try for Oxbridge entry. It is her ambition to be a doctor. Louise’s programme of study consists of A level Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Ethics/Philosophy (all level 3). It is possible at Poole High to study 5 AS levels in subjects you have chosen to take. Louise was put off by some institutions insisting on ‘General Studies’ or ‘Critical Thinking’ when she really did not want to study for them. She will be continuing 4 of these to A2 in year 13. Louise is fond of doing her own independent study, and finds the Science Department’s resources on the Virtual Learning Environment invaluable.
The Extended Project allows young people to pursue an area of special interest and take their studies to a deeper level. This prepares them for the kind of independent learning expected in higher education. The project can be individual or group work and can be an artefact, a dissertation, an investigation or a performance. The Extended Project is offered as a stand alone option for anyone continuing into Year 13 at Poole High School. The Extended Project supports progression to higher education. It is worth half an A-level and carries UCAS points.

Outside the classroom As well as the social and emotional development you will undergo whilst at Poole High Senior School, we appreciate that “multi dimensional” young people will be sought after for further education and training. To this end, we offer a colourful and exciting enrichment programme to all students who study with us. Depending on availability during a particular year, we offer First Aid, Self Defence, Chinese (Mandarin), Ceramics, Printing, RE and Ethical discussion, Debating, Football, Rugby, Young Enterprise, Japanese Studies, Lifesaving, E-journalism and Aerobics. We are building upon this enrichment programme every year.
Do I have a say? Certainly. We pride ourselves on including all students in many of the decisions made in the development of the Senior School. We operate a vibrant and forward-looking committee, run by our student leaders, who decide on social events, charity days, the organisation and running of certain aspects of the sixth form and help make things happen. The enrichment programme is an example of students constructively criticising how something was done, and the Senior School team changing things to cater for the students.

Our Pledge To You The ten entitlements
(1) A course outline or specification. This shares exactly what you will be studying and what an examiner or verifier will be looking for in your work. (2) A calendar or timeline. This shows you when coursework, exams, or major events are happening in your course, so that you are able to plan ahead and so that there will be “no surprises”. (3) A clear expectation of when homework will be set and how much. Deadlines for homework should be clear with guidelines for late submission. (4) Your work will be checked on a regular basis (at least once per half term) and that you are made aware of “heading in the right direction”. (5) Constructive feedback on how you can improve your work. This does not always have to be written, although you are urged to make a record of advice in your file or book. (6) Guidelines about what you must do to catch up on missed work if you are absent. (7) Resources (either physical or virtual) to aid your independent learning of the subject. All of your courses will have a VLE course associated with them, containing appropriate resources (revision materials, past exam papers, examiner’s report etc.) and websites. (8) An open constructive dialogue about your needs as a learner. Your teacher is not a miracle worker or mind reader, and your success depends heavily on your working relationship. This is vital. (9) Your welfare is considered at all times. Your safety and personal welfare is of utmost importance to us. Your whereabouts during the school day is essential to your safety. We aim to foster an ethos of mutual respect. (10) The highest levels of quality of learning experiences and support (in or out of the classroom) we can offer.
