Mr Smith was nominated in the ‘Secondary Impact’ category for pioneering the use of new technologies, incorporating Twitter, blogging, app invention and even QR codes into his everyday teaching. ‘Go Green Week’ Pool Academy Geography Leaders have been raising awareness of our environment through ‘Go Green Week.’ In the UK, 60% of our rubbish could be recycled and 30% of the energy wasted. Our Geography Leaders, through presenting assemblies, producing posters around school, and constructing new recycling boxes, have promoted the need to recycle and save energy, both at school and at home. Each day is themed: 

Meat free Monday: one meal meat free!

Travel light Tuesday: walk/cycle to school. Waste not Wednesday: spend 1 minute less in the shower. Switch off Thursday: turn off unnecessary power.

 

We hope ‘Go Green Week’ encourages everyone to take part in caring for our Earth both at home and at school.

Passport to the World Year 7 students in Geography have researched countries of their choice to learn more about them. They worked in groups and as part of the task they researched the food and cuisine of their country. Each group presented their information and menus to the rest their peers who then voted for their favourite menu and presentation.

The winning countries were: Iceland, Japan, Italy, Fiji, Madagascar and China. The school canteen is now preparing a global culinary odyssey beginning with Iceland on the 12 th February when the lunch hall will be serving Icelandic themed food. The geography department will be updating the themed days via our homepage, the Pool Post and posters in school. Congratulations to Emily Bowles, Eden Oxborough and Matt Patrick from 7 RND who were the winning Icelandic group. We hope to see you in the canteen next Tuesday!

Counting our Blessings Who gives up anything for Lent? Chocolate, sweets and treats are the usual items that many decide to give up for 40 days up to Easter Sunday. Here is an idea that students and their families may like to try. Why not join some of the staff and students by counting our blessings and raising money to help people who do not have the same opportunities and facilities in parts of the world over the period of Lent starting on 12th February. You can do this by clicking on the Christian Aid 2013 website and onto Lent. Here there are three ways that we can be aware of the greater need in our world and doing something positive to help. The resources can be downloaded and the guide to raising money is designed for 3 age groups so everyone can take part. For more information see Mrs Smith (Humanities Department)
