FREE / GRATIS N2 IN DONKER GEHUL

‘n Gedeelte van die N2 pad wat verby woonhuise in Pongola strek is snags in donker gehul. Die straatligte werk nie meer nie en skep ‘n baie swak indruk vir verbygangers. Die gedeelte van die pad waar die N2 afdraai na Vryheid is skaars sigbaar in die nag en dat daar nog nie ‘n ongeluk plaasgevind het nie is ‘n wonder. Navrae het aan die lig gebring dat SANRAL (wat verantwoordelik was vir die herstel van die N2) nie die ligte gaan herstel nie maar beweer dat dit die verantwoordelikheid is van uPhongolo Munisipaliteit. Verskeie persone asook die Pongola Belastingbetalersvereniging het reeds klagtes gelê by die plaaslike munisipaliteit maar sonder enige sukses. Daar was wel begroot vir die herstel van sodanige ligte — al wat ons nou wonder is wanneer dit herstel gaan word of is sodanige begroting dalk vir iets anders aangewend ?

uit die kantoor van die redakteur Die goue reël wanneer dinge verskriklik besig gaan is : As jy nie in beheer is nie, lyk ten minste net in beheer. Hierdie jaar het beslis weggespring met die versnelling van ’n jet enjin! Die realiteit is dat ons in ’n wêreld woon waar tyd nie stil staan nie, mense raak ongeduldig wanneer hulle moet wag, en die tempo hiervan raak net dood eenvoudig nie rustiger nie. Ons ontvang e-posse op ons fone en wat is nou lekkerder as om ’n boodskap te stuur op jou BlackBerry Messenger. Dit is nou totdat jou BlackBerry die gees gee en nie meer wil saamspeel nie. Groot was my frustrasie dus toe my getroue “vriend” die gees gee. Ek was letterlik verlore. Geen nommers en geen “BBM contacts” nie ! My kantoor en ’n deel van my wese het tot stilstand gekom ... Met die spoed van wind het ek gejaag na Maria’s waar ek my lot gaan bekla het. As ‘n Autopage kliënt het Haroun en Amina tot my redding gekom. Drie dae later was my nuwe BlackBerry hier ! Dankie julle vir sulke wonderlike diens. Dit word waardeer en ek is seker daar is baie van ons daar buite wat dieselfde voel ! Wat het hierdie ondervinding my geleer ? Sorg dat jy gereeld die nommers op jou foon stoor en die ander ding is … daar is werklik nog mense wat in hierdie besige tye tyd maak om na ander se klagtes en probleme te luister en te help waar hulle kan. So - ek is weer terug op die lug : BlackBerry en al !

Huldeblyk aan ADÉLE VAN RENSBURG (LOURENS) 3 Junie 2012 Adéle was ‘n leerling van Pongola Akademie van gr 1 tot gr 12 en was van kleins af geliefd onder haar skoolmaats en personeel. Alles wat sy aangepak het, het sy met volle oorgawe gedoen.

Hiermee wil ons graag vir ‘n ieder en elk wat ons hierdie afgelope jaar gedra het, dankie sê. Dankie is nie genoeg nie !! Jul het gereageer elke keer as ons Heer ons op julle harte geplaas het. Hy het ons waarlik gedra elke oomblik en nogsteeds. Alle eer aan Hom vir Sy onverdiende genade. Pongola julle is GREAT ! Baie liefde Albie, Myrna, Albert, Zonica, Jacques, Marlize, Johan, Estelle & JG

Adéle het haar onderskei as leier en was dus hoofprefek en veelsydigste leerling van die laerskool. In die hoërskool was sy ook hoofprefek. Ons liewe Here het haar ook geseën met verskeie talente en sy het dan ook aan verskeie sportsoorte deelgeneem waarin sy Provinsiale kleure verwerf het asook S.A 0/19 ringtennis. Sy was ook sportster in die hoërskool. Akademies het Adéle altyd presteer en ons skool was so trots op haar wat as mediese dokter gekwalifiseer het. In haar stil wêreld was sy ‘n wenner en iemand op wie ons voorwaar trots was, ‘n voorbeeld vir baie van ons! Ons salueer jou en gaan jou baie mis. Ons innige simpatie aan al jou familie – Jy was ‘n ster wat geskitter het, al moes jy op so ‘n jong ouderdom verhuis. Hoof, personeel en leerders van Pongola Akademie Berig : S Senekal

Ter nagedagtenis aan Terence (TK) Kok Terence Kok, geliefde seun van Chris en Beverly Kok van Pongola is dood in ‘n motorfietsongeluk op die Inyama pad op die 6de Junie 2012. Terence laat sy vrou Miranda en dogter Bailey agter. Hy sal gemis word deur sy ouers, suster, broers, swaer en talle vriende. Terence was werksaam in die Kongo by Partners Drilling en was in Pongola by sy ouers vir ‘n ruskans van drie weke. Die ongeluk het gebeur op die vooraand van sy vertrek terug na die Kongo. Die familie wil net baie dankie sê aan die Here vir ‘n wonderlike seun maar dit was tyd om huistoe te gaan. Baie dankie ook aan Dr van Aardt, Pongola Hospitaal, SAPS, Pastoor Schalk van der Merwe, Antonie & Kleintjie, Roléne van der Merwe en Matthys Ellis. Dankie ook aan almal wat bygedra het en ons bygestaan het met etes, oproepe, boodskappe en drukkies. In die besonder wil ons ook die volgende mense bedank : Steff, Gerda en kinders, Eddie Alberts, Christo Potgieter en Jozi.

… ons onthou Saterdag, 16 Junie 2012, is dit presies ‘n jaar sedert Lindri Potgieter (van Rooyen) noodlottig gewond is in ‘n skietongeluk. .

Die hofsaak duur nog voort en daar word verwag dat uitspraak gelewer sal word gedurende Julie 2012.

Gevreesde siekte-dekking Baie mense maak die fout om te dink dat ’n mediese fonds genoeg voorsiening maak vir siekte en hospitalisasie. Wat hulle nie besef nie, sê Piet, is dat ’n ernstige siekte of trauma moontlik nie deur hul mediese fonds gedek word nie. En selfs al word dit gedek, kan die koste op die lang duur baie groter wees as die voordele wat hul mediese fonds verskaf. Die meeste mediese skemas maak nie voorsiening vir nasorg by die huis of by ’n geskikte inrigting nie. Om sake te vererger, sal jy miskien ’n geruime tyd ook nie in staat wees om ’n inkomste te verdien nadat jy deur so iets getref is nie, of jou siekteverlof kan uitgeput raak. “Met gevreesde siekte-dekking kry jy gemoedsrus dat indien ’n gevreesde siekte by jou gediagnoseer word, jy die nodige fondse sal hê om jou inkomste te beskerm en voortspruitende mediese of ander koste te dek. “ ’n Tragiese lewensgebeurtenis soos sterfte of ongeskikraking is een van die mees traumatiese ervarings wat mense in hul leeftyd moet hanteer. Silwerjare Nuus Ons klomp gryskoppe het vandag, Donderdag 7 Junie 2012, weer ‘n heerlike kuier by Dweba Lapa geniet. Sommer met die intrapslag is ons bederf met ‘n glasie sjerrie en ook ‘n sjokoladetjie by elkeen se plek aan die tafel. Die vasvra was ‘n gawe ysbreker wat ons musiekkennis (en ons geheue!) getoets het, met soete gevolge: vir elkeen wat al die vrae korrek beantwoord het, was daar nog ‘n sjokolade! Nicky, jou spinasiesop was ‘n wenner en so ook die ander kos en die nagereg. Ons het heerlik gesmul en toe rustig verder sit en kuier oor ‘n lekker koppie koffie. Ons is baie dankbaar vir mense soos Laurie en Nicky Brecher wat soveel moeite doen om die lewe vir ons senior burgers so aangenaam te maak. Baie dankie ook aan die Silwerjare bestuur wat geen moeite ontsien om al hierdie heerlike uitstappies vir ons te reël nie. Susan du Preez


VADERSDAG

W

aar kom Vadersdag vandaan? Is dit sommer net 'n moderne gier van ons tyd? Nee, daar is nogal 'n hele storie daaraan verbonde. Ek sou graag meer breedvoerig inligting wou gee, maar volstaan by hierdie opsomming. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, 'n geliefde dogter van Spokane staan bekend as die stigter van Vadersdag en die viering soos ons dit vandag ken. Dit was haar onophoudelike stryd en velle deursettingsvermoë dat Vadersdag oral die respek kry wat dit verdien. Die dag word in meer as dertig lande oor die wêreld gevier. Sonora is gebore in Jenny Lind, Arkansas in 1882. Haar ouers was William en Ellen Smart. Op vyf jarige ouderdom het die gesin getrek na die Weste om 'n beter lewe te probeer bewerkstellig en in Spokane, Washington beland. Op 16jarige ouderdom sterf haar ma tydens die geboorte van haar sesde kind. As oudste kind in die gesin het sy besef watter groot uitdaging daar op haar pa wag om hulle ses kinders groot te maak. Sy het gesien hoe hy verskeie opofferings moes maak om aan sy gesin se behoeftes te voldoen om 'n goeie lewenswyse te handhaaf. As volwassene, op die ouderdom van 27 het Sonora een Sondag in 1909,geluister na 'n diens op Moedersdag. As 'n geliefde dogter van 'n baie toegewyde pa het sy begin wonder waarom daar nie ook 'n soortgelyke dag is vir Vaders nie. Dit is net daar waar haar stryd begin het om amptelike erkenning van Vadersdag te kry. Getroud en ma van 'n seun het sy die Spokane Ministeriële Vereniging en Young Men’s Christian Association – YMCA – genader om hulle ondersteuning te kry om die dag amptelik te vier. Ten spyte dus van menigeen wat vir haar gelag het met haar idee het sy nooit opgehou glo daaraan nie en word sy bekroon met sukses met die viering van die eerste Vadersdag op 19 Junie 1910 toe Vadersdag amptelike gevier is in Spokane. Sy wou graag hê dat die dag op 5 Junie, haar pa se verjaardsdag gevier word maar by gebrek aan tyd vir die voorbereidings is die dag op 19 Junie, die derde Sondag van daardie jaar gevier. Daar is wye aandag aan die feesvieringe gegee en dit het tot gevolg gehad dat die groter massas daardeur geraak is. Die politieke leier, William Jennings Bryan nwas een van die vroegste ondersteuners van Mev. Dodd met haar veldtog. Daar was aanvanklik 'n mate van twyfel by mense, maar die oorgrote meerderheid het vinning tot die besef gekom van watter belangrike rol 'n vader speel by die grootmaak van 'n kind. Sodoende het ondersteuning vir die viering van diè dag gou uitgekring na ander stede in die VSA. Nadat President Woodrow Wilson agtergekom het hoe populêr diè dag is het hy toestemming gegee tot die viering van die dag in 1916, en toe Sonora se pa dood is in 1919 was Vadersdag 'n gewilde geleentheid regoor die VSA. In 1924 het President Calvin Coolidge ook die idee ondersteun, maar dit was eers nà 'n vier dekade lange stryd dat die dag amptelik aanvaar is. President Lyndon Johnson teken 'n Presidensiële Proklamasie in 1966 dat die derde Sondag van Junie as Vadersdag erken sal word. In 1972 het President Richard Nixon meer permanente bevestiging daaraan verleen. Mev. Dodds se ywer is waardeer en sy word amptelik erken as die ‘Moeder van Vadersdag’. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd sterf in 1978 op die rype ouderdom van 96 jaar. So word Vadersdag wêreldwyd dan meestal op die derde Sondag in Junie gevier. Australië en Nieu-Seeland vier Vadersdag die eerste Sondag in September, maar oor die algemeen, sover ek kon navors, is dit die derde Sondag van Junie in meeste wêrelddele, selfs in Indië. Oral oor word dit op dieselfde wyse gevier met kaartjies aan pappa, dikwels self gemaak so ook geskenkies wat dan afgerond met 'n tuisgekookte maaltyd of uiteet by 'n restaurant. Daar is baie mense wat daarteen skop dat diè dag gekommersialiseer word soos byvoorbeeld Kersfees, maar aan die ander kant is daar baie mense wat glo dit wakker die gevoel van die viering van diè dag as 'n spesiale dag vir pappas aan, by mense wat moontlik nog apaties gestaan het teenoor die erkenning van diè dag as SPESIAAL. Dit is so dat elke dag vir beide ouers spesiaal moet wees, maar veral in ons moderne gejaagde lewe is dit tog lekker om te weet èèn dag in 'n jaar word spesiaal vir JOU afgesonder en word daar dikwels ekstra moeite gedoen om dit SPESIAAL vir jou te maak. Rabies Symptoms and Signs Signs and symptoms in animals 

Animals infected with rabies may appear sick, crazed, or vicious. This is the origin of the phrase "mad dog." However, animals infected with rabies may also appear overly friendly, docile, or confused. They may even appear completely normal. Seeing a normally nocturnal wild animal during the day (for example, a bat or a fox) or seeing a normally shy wild animal that appears strange or even friendly should raise suspicion that the animal may have rabies.

Signs and symptoms in humans      

The average incubation period (time from infection to time of development of symptoms) in humans is 30-60 days, but it may range from less than 10 days to several years. Most people first develop symptoms of pain, tingling, or itching shooting from the bite site (or site of virus entry). Nonspecific complaints of fevers, chills, fatigue, muscle aches, and irritability may accompany these complaints. These symptoms may appear similar to those of the flu. Early on, these complaints may seem like any virus, except for the shooting sensations from the bite site. Gradually, however, the affected individual becomes extremely ill, developing a variety of symptoms, including high fever, confusion, agitation, and eventually seizures and coma. Typically, people with rabies develop irregular contractions and spasms of the breathing muscles when exposed to water (this is termed hydrophobia). They may demonstrate the same response to a puff of air directed at them (termed aerophobia). By this point, they are obviously extremely ill. Eventually, the various organs of the body are affected, and the person dies despite support with medication and a respirator.

OVERTURNED TANKER On the morning of 3 June 2012, Spill Tech, a SASOL approved emergency spill response service provider, responded to a call for an overturned tanker at the turn-off to Basaki. The tanker was carrying a load of highly flammable ethanol. A fully equipped Hazmat Team was immediately dispatched to the site. A site assessment was carried out upon arrival at the scene. Since some parts of the tanker remained undamaged, product transfer was required to another storage unit. Spill Tech was onsite for the full duration of the clean-up to ensure that all necessary steps were taken to enable the full rehabilitation of the accident scene.


SAPS NEWS On 07-06-2012 at 12:30 W/O JD Bruwer, W/O JSM Sithole and Constable ZP Mthembu of Golela Port of Entry were doing a stop and search operation on the N2 at Golela T-Junction when they stopped a white minibus. During the search they found two bags of dagga with a total weight of 29.54kg. The person, Absalom Mkhalwelwa Ndawonde was arrested for dealing in dagga. Case 10/06/2012, Mr Sandile Malinga, 19 years old of Msuzwaneni area was murdered on the 1st of June 2012 in the early hours of the morning. Police arrived at the scene and found the deceased at Mphafeni kwaGabela. It is alleged that the deceased was murdered by community members after being accused of the theft of a wheelbarrow. Bruises were found all over his body. Case 49/06/2012—unknown murder victim at Belgrade area. The police arrived at the scene and found the unknown deceased lying on the ground with a stab wound to his head and bruises on his knees. The motive for the murder is still unknown. Case 53/06/2012—a man was shot dead by his relatives in Pongola Nctoshane A136 block no 332238. The police received a complaint of an African man shooting with a fire arm and upon their arrival at the scene found the deceased lying in the yard with a wound to his leg. The suspect fled the scene but left the fire arm on the scene. The corpse was taken to Zuntal Mortuary. Case 64/06/2012—the police received information about a murder that took place at Kwa Mlogo area next to the N2 on the 3rd of June 2012. When the police arrived at the scene of the crime they found the unknown deceased. The deceased was stabbed and had a wound to his throat. The deceased was taken to Zuntal Mortuary. Case 100/06/2012—rape. The complainant was raped by his father while visiting his father at his place of residence.

SENTRANS TROKKE IN ONGELUK Op 2 Junie 2012 om ongeveer 07h00 by die Umfolozi afrit op die N2 het ‘n aankomende trok van Sentrans teen ‘n stilstaande trok van dieselfde groep gebots. Die pad was vir ‘n geruime tyd gesluit en verkeer is by die Umfolozi afrit herlei na die N2.


ONGELUK BY GOLELA

Op 1 Junie 2012 omstreeks 10h30 het die bestuurder van ’n abnormale vrag van Rotran beheer verloor en gebots teen ’n vragmotor van Ndlovu Brick & Block wat langs die pad stilgestaan het sodat die abnormale vrag kon verby beweeg. Die eerste voorhaker van die abnormale vrag moes los gesny word en daar is ure lank gespook om die voertuie in ‘n reguit lyn te kry sodat die abnormale vrag kon aanbeweeg. Die verkeer het vir etlike kilometres opgehoop.

Ten tye van die neem van hierdie foto’s was die eerste voorhaker reeds losgesny en kan slegs die merke op die pad gesien word waar dit gegly het. Hou asseblief in berekening dat hierdie ‘n vrag van 600 ton was wat deur vyf voorhakers getrek was en agter die vrag was daar nog voorhakers wat die stootwerk gedoen het. Die bestuurder van die vragmotor van Ndlovu Brick & Block het gelukkig ongedeerd daarvan afgekom.

Die Beheerliggaam wil u graag in kennis stel van twee onlangse besoeke wat hulle van die Onderwys Departement gehad het. Die eerste besoek het gewentel rondom ‘n versoek van die Onderwys Departement dat die skool op ‘n parallel medium basis bedryf word. Dit beteken dat hulle versoek het dat daar klasse in Engels (addisioneel tot die Afrikaanse klasse) aangebied word. Die uiteindelike doel hiervan is om ‘n hoë kwaliteit Engelse skool beskikbaar te stel vir professionele mense wat na Pongola wil verhuis. Hulle het aangevoer dat ons kwaliteit onderrig die rede vir die versoek is. Die Beheerliggaam het voor die hand liggende uitdagings aan die Onderwys Departement uitgewys, en ondersoek hulle dit tans. Die Onderwys Departement het in beginsel ooreengekom dat: Afrikaans as onderrig medium by Pongola Akademie sal bly voortbestaan; Die hoë gehalte van onderrig ten alle tye gehandhaaf sal word; Die etos van die skool sal bly voortbestaan. Dit is interessant om daarop te let dat hierdie versoek van die Onderwys Departement aan ons skool juis te wyte is aan die hoë kwaliteit onderrig wat by ons skool aangebied word. Die tweede vergadering was ‘n opvolg vergadering rakende die aspek rondom parallel medium. Tydens hierdie vergadering is ons meegedeel dat die Minister van Onderwys in Kwazulu-Natal ‘n beleid uitgevaardig het in terme waarvan saamgestelde skole (laerskool en hoërskool gekombineer in een skool) nie meer vir die Onderwys Departement aanvaarbaar is nie. Volgens hulle gaan ons skool moet besluit of ons ‘n laerskool of hoërskool wil wees. Dit is aan ons duidelik gemaak dat hierdie beleidsrigting oor ‘n tydperk van ‘n paar jaar in Natal infaseer sal word, en dat hulle die beleid aanvanklik infaseer by skole waar dit makliker is om die beleid te implementeer. Daar is bevestig dat Pongola Akademie (aangesien dit die enigste Afrikaanse laer- en hoërskool in die omgewing is), ‘n baie moeilike skool is om hierdie beleid by te implementeer. Die aangeleentheid dien tans ook by FEDSAS, wie reeds vir die Onderwys Departement in kennis gestel het dat die nuwe beleid van die Minister teenstrydig is met verskeie statutêre voorskrifte en regulasies. Die Beheerliggaam hanteer op die oomblik hierdie versoeke, met die hulp van FEDSAS en Afriforum, en sal aan u terugvoering gee sodra daar verdere verwikkelinge is. Ons gesels met … Fatima Jardim Agtergrond : Tussen Johan Erlank en sy ma, Koekie, was daar deur die jare ’n baie nou band in die bestuur van hulle besighede. Met die oog op die toekoms soek Johan al die afgelope jare na n geskikte opvolger vir tannie Koekie. Vir hom is dit belangrik dat sy iemand kan oplei om hom by te staan as sy die dag nie meer daar is nie. Dit is met hierdie soeke dat Johan toevallig by Fatima se kantoor ingestap het by die uPhongolo Munisipaliteit. Soos Fatima dit aan my stel, kom hy op ‘n dag wat sy self nie meer geweet het of sy verseker is van haar werk as munisipale bestuurder nie. Na ‘n kort gesprek verander haar lewe in ‘n oomblik. Vandag is sy werksaam as oudit bestuurder by J J Erlank Maatskappy. Volgens Fatima het Johan dieselfde siening as die sakeman David Ogilvy: “If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs. But if each of us hires people who are bigger then we are, Our company will become a company of giants” Vir my was dit dus ‘n ongelooflike kompliment en voorreg om by die Erlanks aan te sluit. Onder die leiding en mentorskap van Koekie Erlank word ek geleer om Johan by te staan in die bestuur van sy besighede. Ek skakel direk met die bestuurders van die verskeie ondernemings in ‘n besturende hoedanigheid en sal geleidelik die leisels heeltemal oorneem by tannie Koekie. Fatima het vir 14 jaar gewerk by uPhongolo Munisipaliteit – 6 daarvan was as Munisipale bestuurder. Op my vraag of die skuif na die J J Erlank maatskappy, nie ‘n groot aanpassing vir haar was nie, antwoord sy dat dit eerder ‘n groot uitdaging was om sonder enige ondervinding haar voete te vind in die privaatsektor. Sy beskryf die skuif egter as die beste besluit van haar lewe en sê dat sy nog nie ‘n dag teruggekyk het nie. Wat is haar visie vir die toekoms? Fatima sê dat sy wil voortbou op die jarelange ideaal van die Erlanks: Elke kliënt is vir hulle belangrik en ‘n besoek aan enige van hul winkels moet vir ieder en elk ‘n aangename koopervaring wees. In die volgende uitgawe van die Pongola News kyk ons na ‘n dag agter die skerms van Junk en OK Grocer. Wie van ons weet werklik wat gebeur voor daardie deure soggens om 08h00 oopswaai? So, moet dus nie hierdie uitgawe van die volgende koerant misloop nie!

Magudu Farmer’s Association The Magudu Farmer’s Association held their Annual General Meeting at the Magudu Sale Yards on 31st May. Rob Stock, who has been the chairman for the past 7 years, thanked Ian Goss and Henry Malan, who combined, have offered dedicated and committed service to the committee, for over 50 years. Colin MacDonald, the district Kwanalu representative gave an update on all the projects that they are addressing. Cattle sales in the district are dwindling due to the upsurge of game farms. The Farmer’s Association needs additional membership to maintain healthy finances. It is important, therefore, to include game farmers in the association. Captain Majola from the Magudu Police Station addressed the meeting. This gave the members a platform for open debate on police performance. Silke Pfizer announced that the NGRA (Natal Game Ranchers Association) is to be re-awakened, under the guidance of Karel Landman. Silke will continue to head the Game Study Group for the area. Short presentations addressing roads (Jannie Bender), RPO (Johannes Steenkamp), grave yard maintenance (Jannie Bender), and alien plant species management (John Clayton) were given. Rob Stock announced his resignation as chairman, followed by the incumbent committee members. Newly elected committee members are: Bobby van Heerden (Chairman), Karen Venter (Administration), Kurt Stock, Rob Lundi, Johannes Coetzee, Kobus Badenhorst and Johannes Steenkamp. Op Sondag, 27 Mei 2012, het 10 pare met 7 voertuie vertrek vanaf Pongola na Ponta Do’ Oura. Vanaf die grenspos is ’n baie mooi roete geneem deur grasvlaktes, poele en oerwoud na die pragtige vakansie bestemming, Kamp Carlos te Santa Maria. By die aankoms daar, is daar lekker gesellig verkeer. Die volgende dag is daar met ‘n “dow” op die meer gevaar na ‘n restaurant, waar ‘n smaaklike ete bedien is. Die aand is daar weer lekker gesellig verkeer en op Dinsdag, 29 Mei 2012, het die voertuie weer die roete aangepak terug na Pongola. Almal wat dit meegemaak het, is dit eens dat dit ‘n baie suksesvolle naweek was en het almal dit baie geniet. Die Ondersteunersklub wil hulle dank uitspreek teenoor Mark en Telani Dedekind van Mark Dedekind Safaris en Kamp Carlos, wie die hoof borg was. Mark en Telani, baie dankie vir die beskikbaarstelling van julle pragtige geriewe te Kamp Carlos en vir die borg, dit word opreg waardeer!
