Variety When combinations of the elements of art create complexity and intricacy, it is said to have variety, which increases visual interest in a work. Wash A wash is the fluid, semitransparent application of color to a painting. A wash uses water to dilute acrylics, inks or watercolor paints. With oil paints, a solvent like mineral spirits or turpentine is used.
