STEP 1: Choose a neutral and a color that feels fresh. I am painting on the Aquabord again—my favorite surface. I created the wash of aqua ink on the right by applying a lot of water and then balanced it out by painting with a gray matte acrylic on the left. You can work in a horizontal or vertical fashion. Add one more color and lay it down. When the background layers are mostly dry, add a bright color that will pop—like I did here with fluorescent pink. Neutral colors really help bright colors to shine or stand out. Add some loose and freehand marks to your piece. Allow yourself to begin to play. Here I am working directly with the bright orange dropper.
