bstract Cu rrent research in im m igrant com m u nities in Europe reveals that in m any cases they are characterized by rapid langu age shift (e.g. Broed er & Extra 1998, Extra & Gorter 2001). The d om inant society s assimilationist pressu res, the salience of the d om inant langu age for ed u cational achievem ent and social integration, a loose connection betw een ethnic language and id entity or a stigmatized id entity are som e of the factors that lead imm igrant parents and / or their child ren to aband on the use of the ethnic language. The paper reports on a stu d y of lingu istic com petence, practices and attitu d es of Albanian parents w ho have emigrated to Greece in the last ten years and w hose child ren attend Greek prim ary schools. This qu estionnaire stu d y w as cond u cted in the city of Thessaloniki and the prefectu re of Rethym no, Crete in the spring of 2003. It aim ed at id entifying not only the im m igrants practices and attitu d es connected to im m igrant child ren s bilingualism bu t also how these variables interact w ith each other and w ith other factors su ch as the parents d egree of Greek language competence and use, their wish to stay in Greece for more than five years, etc.) ,
