mud pies are easy to recall. I can’t say the same when it comes to childhood memories and rocks. Whether lack of experience or personality are to blame, choosing which rocks to stack on my small cairn in Sedona proved challenging. As is my wish for everything, I had hoped for it to be strong and enduring. As a destination, Sedona is full of fortitude and much more enchantment than expected. A panoramic of box canyons produces an appreciation for patience while layers of rock stand as both a testament and a visible reminder that with enough time, awe-inspiring results are possible given a good foundation. Longtime Atlanta Hawks fans might say the same about this year’s team as it heads into the playoffs as the favorite for the first time in decades. This month, we talk with Hawks play-by-play radio broadcaster Steve Holman, who hasn’t missed a single game in 26-plus years and has become as much of an icon for the team as the players. While we wait in wonder as

the remainder of the season unfolds for the Hawks, the call of the great outdoors gets progressively louder. When you can no longer resist the urge to play in Mother Nature’s playground, flip to page 14 for places to unleash your inner Indiana Jones. Whether it’s rafting, skeet shooting or glamping, fun in the sun awaits for all ages. If those activities don’t keep you forever young, we’re prepared to share some suggestions on how to turn creaky hips and erratic backs into healthy sidekicks ready to make you feel like a spring chicken again. Speaking of stalwart essentials, Points North Atlanta will have published consecutive issues for 15 years as of next month. While we can’t give away how we’re planning to celebrate, a rock-solid surprise is a decent hint.

OPEN HISTORY

In 1915, The Coca-Cola Company sent out a call for a new bottle that “a person could recognize even if they felt it in the dark.” A century later, the now iconic contoured shape created by the Root Glass Company not only achieved global recognition, but also continues to inspire many moments of happiness in film, social history, design and the fine arts. To celebrate the centennial and its legacy, the High Museum of Art Atlanta presents an exhibit of more than 100 objects, including original design illustrations, historical artifacts, early works of pop art by Andy Warhol and a photography collection documenting the bottle’s universal presence in 20th-century America. On display until Oct. 4, there’s plenty of time to get a taste of “The Coca-Cola Bottle: An American Icon at 100” for yourself. Just be prepared – you may leave thirsty for the refreshing fizz of Atlanta’s favorite soda. high.org

WIGWAM WELLNESS

The legendary performance that garnered the nickname “longest-running musical” for nearly 20 years on Broadway and winner of nine Tony Awards is now coming to a stage near you. BK Productions, owned by Bob and Kathy Russell – the same husband and wife team behind Georgia Senior Follies – are happy to present “A Chorus Line” to The Cumming Playhouse April 24 through May 17. The story of struggling dancers who push their limits to make dreams of becoming a professional dancer a reality, the show is rarely done in metro Atlanta because Kathy said it’s difficult for a community theater to tackle. “It requires ‘guts’ and a talented staff,” she said. Luckily for us, that talent includes choreographer Buddy Stotts, who appeared in the Broadway production, as well as what Kathy calls a “triple threat” of actors, singers and dancers. Recommended for mature audiences, grab your tickets before they dance away by calling 770-781-9178 or online at playhousecumming.com. – Nicole McLaughlin

pril showers bring

May flowers across the country, but in Georgia, daffodils have already blossomed and so has the sun. Mother Nature conjures springtime afternoons so deliciously warm that staying inside seems like a cardinal sin for a Southerner. Well, set your soul free. Step into the fresh air and breathe deeply. Points North Atlanta has uncovered a shortlist of getup-and-go outings sure to please the whole family.

Cast and Blast Less than two hours north of Atlanta, the town of Blue Ridge is hands-down adorable. Its lake of the same name plays no second fiddle – it’s righteously beautiful. Then there’s the nearby Toccoa River with robust waters that have helped earn Fannin County the bona fide title of Trout Capital of Georgia. Perhaps you already know that.

What may be news is the area’s offthe-beaten-path Noontootla Creek Farms. Tucked into the southern pocket of Fannin County, this 1,500-acre property offers thrills byway of three main activities: guided fly fishing, a sporting-clay course and a 3-D archery course packed with plenty of life-size targets to challenge your skills. Plan ahead, as there’s no such thing as walk-ins.

All three species of Georgia trout — rainbow, brown and brook — can be caught in challenging Noontootla Creek, where guests sans equipment worry not. Guides will outfit each member of your party with waders, boots, rods, reels and fl ies. Save your cash for a tip instead of shelling out a small fortune at the sporting goods store. “This is no trout pond,” Rob Kaser, marketing manager of Noontootla Creek Farms said. “We’re one of the best small stream fly-fishing experiences in the country.” “What about Montana?” I asked. “They’re pretty good.” “When I say one of the best,” Kaser answered quietly, “I’m being humble. Many guides have said we’re the best. Period.” Well, then – I want to go. So do you. Visitors may stay on property in a

four-bedroom farmhouse sleeping eight. The accommodations can serve as your family’s home base for any and all Blue Ridge area activities. If the farmhouse is booked on your desired dates, don’t fret. Rent one of the many beautiful cabins Blue Ridge has to offer, then make plans to “cast and blast” back at the farm. In other words, fish in the morning and shoot your way through the afternoon. Kaser referred to the 12-station sporting-clay course as golfing with a shotgun, cart included. Unlike golf, highest score wins. Even if rods and rifles aren’t your life’s burning passion, it’s fun to learn. Kaser reported girls’ get-away weekends have become amazingly popular. Sleepy mountain views across the valley are worth the trip alone, but the folks at Noontootla Creek Farms work hard to create unique experiences guests never forget.

Thrills for All Venture north across the Georgia border and discover white water rafting on the Ocoee River. At Raft One, brothers Brent and Dusty Rogers have taken their passion for the great outdoors and turned it into a thriving business. Looking for rafting, zip lining and mountain biking excursions? Look no more. Raft One is aptly named. In the beginning, the outfit would happily take a single passenger down the river if that’s who showed up. It’s a marked contrast from most rafting companies that wouldn’t dream of spending an afternoon with a lone paying customer. That is rarely the case these days. “Our biggest group to date [numbered] 600 people,” Brent reported proudly.

18

Points North | April 2015 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

Families make up a hearty percentage of their client base, but oversized groups plow through regularly. Everyone from youth groups to bachelorette parties have wielded themselves down the class I to IV rapids under Raft One’s careful guidance. Safety comes first, but clients are expected to help float the boat. Everyone becomes part of the crew, paddling for all his or her worth and getting wet. On-property lodging includes a log cabin style bunkhouse holding up to 44 people in single-person bunk beds. Pack a sleeping bag, pillow, towels and, most importantly, your inner Indiana Jones. Wildlife Oasis If you can get your crew to Athens, do yourself a favor and drift a little farther east. Nestled in the rolling countryside is Eagle Rock Plantation — a place low on

cotton, but high in praise from avid hunters across the nation who return annually to this highly sought-after 1,400-acre hunting preserve. Owned and operated by the Slay family for 11 years, they’ve diligently overseen careful land management and exhilarating private hunts. “This is my art piece,” patriarch and owner Mitch Slay said of the property. “I’m the painter.” This spring consider one of their combo wild boar and turkey hunts. Never seen a wild boar, let alone shoot one? That’s okay. The Slay family works with both experienced hunters and newbies. “Little Buddy Hunts” are specifically geared for parents with children. Thrashing around the preserve, boars can reach a whopping 500 pounds. Hunting them is done from elevated stands, with

children never left alone. Parent accompaniment is a must. Whether you’re shooting or gawking at one, an oversized wild hairy hog crashing through brush is something you don’t see every day. Guests stay on property in the stately plantation home (pictured on previous page), but don’t expect to nab an online reservation – it can’t be done. Slay runs the operation old school, so you’ll have to pick up the phone and talk to a human. When you do, the Southern hospitality oozing from the other end will only encourage you to book at trip without further adieu. Eagle Rock Plantation is also a working cattle ranch of more than 100 Angus. “Kids need to see where their hamburger comes from,” instructed Slay with a chuckle. The sheer number of visible wildlife

20

tucked into the landscape will impress all in your party. Children delight in spotting white tail deer, turkey, geese, ducks, hogs, songbirds and perhaps an occasional bald eagle. So, skip the petting zoo and come see the real thing. “It’s an oasis of wildlife,” Slay guaranteed. Shutterbugs, have a field day. Many come to hone their photography skills among the acres of pine forests, gurgling creeks and low golden afternoons. Eagle

Rock Plantation serves up more than custom-crafted hunts; it’s Georgian countryside at its best. Not Your Granny’s Cabin Years ago, my family visited Fort Mountain State Park northwest of Ellijay. The hiking, lake fun, historic stonewall tower and long-range views into Tennessee were stunning. The dated onsite cabin we stayed in? Meh. Well, that’s all changed and many

Georgia State Park cabins now have bragging rights beyond their beautiful backdrops. Renovated interiors feature any variety of fresh bead board walls, polished hardwood floors, handsome ceiling beams, flat screen TVs and industrial-chic light fixtures. Martha Stewart would approve. If you’ve lugged your crew to a state park cabin in seasons past and left unimpressed, come on back. These remodeled spaces and handsome rooms inspired by their gorgeous settings will put your spring adventure over the top. “People are amazed by the remodeling,” said Carol Chadwick, office clerk at Fort Mountain State Park. “They’re surprised to fi nd modernized cabins tucked back in the woods.”

Fort Mountain State Park boasts 10 renovated cabins with five more slated for redesign soon. Currently, camper cabins in four other Georgia State Parks – Fort Yargo, Vogel, Don Carter and Fort McAllister – have also been revamped, with F.D. Roosevelt up next. If you find yourself on the reservation hotline and all the cool-kid cabins are taken, remember you have other lodging options. Don’t forget about yurts. What’s a yurt? We’re glad you asked. Made of wood and canvas, a yurt is a circular cabin several notches sturdier (and much less trouble) than a traditional nylon tent. They boast everything from real furniture, wood floors, ceiling fans and heat in the winter. Laying your pretty little head down in a yurt is like glamour camping. Book one this spring and text all your friends that you’re out “glamping.” Five state parks across Georgia feature yurt possibilities, with Cloudland Canyon ringing in the clear winner with a total of 10. Interiors feature electrical outlets for your cook stove, electric blankets, curling iron – however you roll. Locking doors and large windows will make your crew feel safe and homey. And snap! You won’t be

SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS { W R I T T E N BY C A R L DA N B U RY, J R . }

TIP-OFF TIME WITH THE HAWKS

STEVE HOLMAN

Iconic

NBA play-by-pl ay announcers normally are a big swatch in a team’s quilt! The Lakers had their Hearn. The Cavaliers had their Tait. The Celtics had their Most. What they lacked in physical attributes like the players they waxed about, they offset with their eyes, ears and mostly throat for the fans that set their radio dials to the stations that broadcast their team’s 82 games a year. For the Atlanta Hawks, whose stream of success since moving to Atlanta from St. Louis for the start of the 1968-69 NBA season has been akin to a dripping faucet in the Sahara, play-by-play man Steve Holman hasn’t missed a call since taking over those duties from John Ster-

ling, March 1, 1989. When the NBA playoffs begin this month, Holman’s consecutive game streak will have reached 2,222 games (barring an unlikely setback), and unfathomably his beloved Hawks have a bona fide chance of soaring to heights where none of the previous 46 editions ascended. Grabbing the Mic Holman chose his career path more than 53 years ago. While listening to legendary broadcaster Johnny Most call a Celtics game on WHDH, Holman decided that career was for him. Nine years later, Holman’s dream came true when as a high school senior, he began working full time at Curt Gowdy’s WCGY radio station in his hometown of Lawrence, Mass., for $110 a week and “all the records [you]

can steal.” While Gowdy meant musical records at the time, Holman has indeed stolen an incredible record of consecutive games broadcast for the Hawks. Before leaving the Boston area in 1980, Holman, who used his connection at WCGY to score media passes to Celtics games, worked up the nerve to introduce himself to Most, and eventually became Most’s statistician. In 1976, Most literally lost his voice for a few weeks, and Holman stepped in for his mentor. His first taste of play-by-play enabled him to score several gigs in the Atlanta area, including sports talk shows on WGST, WSB, and for bits with the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Chiefs of the North American Soccer League. Within five years, Holman won a job with the Hawks, serving as an analyst and occasional play-by-play man. When Sterling, still a good friend of Holman’s, left to become a New York Yankees broadcaster, Holman grabbed the mic and hasn’t relinquished it since, for both regular season contests and playoff games. Fittingly, his first game in his new role for the Hawks was at Boston Garden against the Celtics.

Enthusiasm over Outcome Before this season, the Hawks had captured division titles just four times, and have never exceeded the second round in any of their previous playoff appearances. Holman and the Hawks shrinking fan base endured seven straight years of missing the

playoffs from 1999-2000 to 2006-07, and that included the 2004-05 debacle when the team went a miserable 13-69. But Holman has always managed to maintain his zeal for the team and for the audience, despite witnessing fewer wins than losses during the past 30 years. “Even during those days, I enjoyed what I do. I try to call every game like it’s my first one. I can maintain my enthusiasm that way and I just look forward to it every game,” said the 61-year-old Holman, who was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in 2011 and was named the 2014 Georgia Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA). This season, Holman has to contain that emotion, as the Hawks are fighting with the Golden State Warriors as the top team in the league, despite having no iconic star on the team and lukewarm coverage 26

Points North | April 2015 | pointsnorthatlanta.com

from the national media. Head coach, Mike Budenholzer, has instilled a teamfirst attitude with a fervid commitment to defense, and his players have executed his plan magnificently. The Hawks are rather parliamentary, relying upon each team member for contributions rather than relying upon a more autocratic system. While the NBA media and fans seem to revel in the part being greater than the whole, the Hawks balance makes them a dangerous foe leading into the NBA playoffs. “[The Hawks players] really seem to embrace the team concept. It doesn’t seem to fit the mold of what ESPN or some of the national commentators are looking for. It’s kind of the round peg in the square hole,” Holman offered. “Here we are leading the East and they still leave us out of the conversation of which team is going to win the conference, or which team is going to be in the Finals. It’s Cleveland, or Chicago, Toronto or Washington, but they never seem to buy into what we’re doing. It probably upsets me more than it does the players. They don’t really seem to pay attention to all of that.”

All-Star Attention Forward Paul Millsap, point guard Jeff Teague, center Al Horford, shooting star Kyle Korver and forward DeMarre Carroll led the Hawks to 17 straight wins in the month of January, became the first team in NBA history to go undefeated in a calendar month with at least 10 victories, and have all five starters average in double-digit points, but not one to average more than 20-plus points. Key reserves off the bench include Dennis Schroeder, Mike Scott (a fractured toe suffered on March 11 in Denver will force him to miss up to six weeks), Pero Antic, Kent Bazemore and Thabo Sefolosha. “We’ve got five guys in our starting lineup that can make the fi nal shot in a game. I’m not a mathematician by any means, but it seems to be easier to shut down a couple of guys than it is to shut down five guys. I think we have that advantage and I don’t think anything is going to change for us when the playoffs come,” Holman said. “[Horford] has been in three All-Star Games, [Millsap] has been in two now, and [Teague] and [Korver] were All-Stars this season. So, we’ve got good solid players, a good solid bench, which I think is going to be very important when the playoffs come. I just think everything is pointing in the right direction.” And at long last, ticket sales at Philips Arena are ascending too. Last season, the Hawks finished 28th of 30 teams in atten-

Although, with the lack of past playoff success, fans may still be operating upon a wait-and-see approach, which in Holman’s mind is counterproductive. “All of us here in Atlanta have to get beyond the old Atlanta-sports mindset. This team is not any of the previous Hawks teams, or any of the Braves teams or Falcons teams. This is a team that can do something very special,” Holman offered. And rather than distance the present

from the past, Holman believes management is doing a better job of shining the spotlight on those players and coaches that have been a meaningful part of the team’s history. “Whether you have won championships or not as a franchise, I think history of a franchise is so important, and I think we need to embrace that. Rather than move past it, we need to salute the past players who have been here. I think they

On and Off the Court Holman travels on the team plane for road games, and often sits in the last row with Wilkins, with whom he has a special, enduring relationship. While it is said not to get too close to the players, Holman has forged many relationships over the years and enjoys the camaraderie. “Back in the old days, we were all closer to the same age. Doc Rivers, Jon Koncak and [Wilkins], we all kind of grew up together and it was a tight-knit thing for us. We all saw each others’ families. I still have a very good relationship with Doc and with ‘Nique. He sits with me in the back of the plane on every trip, so we’ve been pals for all these years,” Holman offered.

“One of the more recent guys that I have a good relationship with is Zaza Pachulia. I spent some time in Milwaukee with him when we played there. He is such a good guy. As time goes on, though, there is more of an age gap now between the players and me, so they’re like my kids now. It was easier to be pals back in the ‘80s when no one had cell phones and game systems to occupy your time.” While his broadcasting duties have become almost a full-time job throughout the year, Holman does enjoy his time off particularly during the summer with his wife Mary Jane at their home in Newnan. The Holmans lived in Alpharetta/Johns Creek for 16 years, but opted for a location nearer the Atlanta airport, which of course, he uses often. Holman enjoys grilling outdoors, watching baseball and football when he can, but focuses much of his attention on his 3-year-old grandson Connor, who along with Holman’s son Scott and daughter-in-law Amy, lives in Jackson, Miss. Another son, Steve Jr. resides in the Atlanta area. Before he gets more time to relax during the off-season, Holman knows there is real opportunity to increase his earnings in 2015. This team set the Hawks franchise record for road wins in a season with 23 on March 16 in Sacramento, Calif. And, barring a complete collapse down the stretch, they will surpass the all-time franchise record for regular season wins too, eclipsing the previous record of 57. While regular season success doesn’t guarantee a solid performance in the playoffs, as Holman said recently, “The jersey still says Hawks, and still says Atlanta, but this is a whole different team, a whole different feeling!” Just like the players, the farther the team advances in the playoffs, Holman is rewarded. “Yes, I get a little extra [money if they win],” Holman laughed. “I do get a playoff share. I root for them to win. If they win, I win!” PN

When Bob Dylan wrote, “May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift,” I doubt he was referring to six-pack abs and toned glutes. But living out the acts of courage, standing upright and being strong for the years ahead, as described in his feel-good tune “Forever Young,” are a lot easier when our bodies aren’t physically suffering from common culprits like weak hips and backs. Think back to a younger you that ran around playgrounds at recess, didn’t hesitate to hang from the monkey bars and could cartwheel on a whim. We consulted two of Milton’s fitness experts to get the skinny on why we lose these abilities over time, how to get your swift feet back and keep your inner tune grooving, rather than crying out in pain.

Get Om It As familiar as a 1970s Dylan song, you’ve also likely heard how yoga can be an easy fix from ailments that aren’t necessarily a medical condition. Paired with proven results, that old adage is catching on considering the millions of American practicing today and the number of studios popping up across the Northside. In her corner of the universe, certified professional yoga therapist and educator Kim Saunders teaches her fair share

of aspiring yogis. After two years as the director of the yoga program for the City of Milton, she is now aglow as proud coowner of Lift Yoga, Alpharetta’s first yoga and barre studio. In her classes, Saunders combines a unique blend of styles with both mind and body aspects to help students achieve more than just flexibility — regulars see improvement in strength, balance and overall well being. She also hears students complain about tight muscles, particularly glutes,

hips, hamstrings as well as instability in the sacroiliac (SI) joint. So, what leads to the inner gripes and grumbling? “It can happen to anyone, whether sedentary or an athlete,” Saunders said. As far as causes, it may be structural in the way a body is shaped — like scoliosis or formation of the SI joint — or muscular. Seemingly simple daily movements, from picking up a case of water bottles or unloading the dishwasher, to spending extended periods of time behind a desk or

the wheel of a car cumulatively affect your health. “Hamstring muscles and the iliopsoas muscles are shortened from too much sitting and this causes strain on the lower back,” she added. Even the most athletic among us aren’t exempt from tightness, despite how rigorous the cardio routine or how many steps the Fitbit counted. “Any weight-bearing sport or exercise that involves running, jumping or rapid, dynamic movements

produces tension on the lower back,” Saunders explained. “Repetitive patterns without proper stretching [of] these tight muscles can result in injury.” Preventing the Pain Yikes. So how can we alleviate the hurting? Or, better yet, prevent it all together? The simple answer: creating a strong core. “It’s about teaching people to use their legs and glutes along with [their] core, especially when bending and picking things up,” Saunders schooled. “Many people come to standing using their low back muscles rather than creating effort in legs and core.” Ultimately, Saunders advises treatment depending on where the problem occurs. “Twists can be effective if done very slowly and using core engagement,” she said, adding, “Simple backbends such as sphinx or cobra will help to strengthen 34

back muscles if lack of tone is [the] problem or complaint.” Pigeon is another option for a deeper stretch into glutes and hips, as well as for relief from SI issues, although it can be challenging for newbies. Speaking of beginners, all the talk of snakes and birds may sound like a zoo. In reality, the studio is a very calm and welcoming place to those at all levels of their practice. For those particularly seeking respite from nagging pain, consider one of Lift Yoga’s gentle and restorative classes (also called yin yoga) that move very slowly and generally hold each pose 3 to 5 minutes. Long holds allow muscles and connective tissue to unwind and release tension.

Regardless of which class you try, remember to communicate any concerns to the instructor so they can help offer modifications. For more serious issues, Saunders suggests a private session with a yoga therapist to meet individual needs and practice a sequence of poses created just for you. You’ll leave feeling uplifted, just as the studio’s name suggests. The Core Comeback Maybe the sheer fabrics flowing from the ceiling and a workout done barefoot is not your style. If exercise to you equals running shoes, then lace them up and race to Core Physique, a sweat lover’s haven tucked off Atlanta Highway in Alpharetta. Among the marked track lines on the ground, suspension training bands and memo boards with scribbled “Thanks” and “You Rock!” from clients, owner Kolleen Riddick and her team of five certified trainers offer a unique approach to fitness. One of only 20 Trigger Point Therapy master trainers in the country, Riddick works with NFL athletes to Milton High School’s football team and everyone in

Yoga isn’t just for women anymore. Many men, including professional athletes like Kevin Love and Eddie George, have turned to yoga as the perfect complement to a rigorous sports training regimen, as seen in Gaiam’s new “Athletic Yoga Series” DVDs. healthy hips & backs sequence Saunders shared a 15-to-20 minute sequence you can do from home. “The key is to take time daily to work on both the flexibility and strength,” Saunders said, adding, “With all poses, really focus on full, deep breaths in and long breaths out. The focused breathing will help to release the tension.”

R E C LI N I N G H A M S T R I N G S T R E TC H Lying on your back, bend your right knee into your chest and place a strap or rolled-up towel around the ball of your foot. Straighten your leg toward the ceiling. Press out through both heels. If the lower back feels strained, bend the left knee and place the foot on the ground. Hold for 3 to 5 minutes and then switch to the left for the same amount of time.

R E C LI N I N G T W I S T Lying on your back, bend your knees into your chest and bring your arms out at a “T.” As you exhale, lower knees to ground on the right. Keep both shoulders pressing down firmly. If the left shoulder lifts, lower knees further away from the right arm. Hold for 1 to 2 minutes on each side.

SPHINX Lying on your stomach, prop yourself up on your forearms. Align your elbows directly under your shoulders. Press firmly through your palms and the tops of your feet. Press your pubic bone forward. You can place a block under your forehead to relax neck and shoulders. Hold for 1 to 3 minutes.

T H R E A D T H E N E E D LE , R E C LI N I N G P I G E O N O R F I G U R E 4 (some poses have a variety of names) Lying on your back, bend both knees with feet flat on the ground. Bend the right knee like a figure four, with the outer left ankle to the right thigh. Lift the left foot into the air, bringing left calf parallel to the ground. Thread your right hand between the opening of the legs and interlace your hands behind your left thigh. Hold 2 to 3 minutes and then repeat on the other side.

SUPPORTED BRIDGE Reclining with knees bent, lift hips and place a yoga block under the SI/tailbone. Add a yoga strap just above the knees so that thighs and feet stay parallel and this creates stability in SI joint. Work on lifting hips off the block as you extend and reach tailbone toward knees. Lower back onto block. Repeat.

LE G S U P TH E WA LL Scoot your buttocks all the way into the wall and swing your feet up the wall. This pose is excellent for relaxing the muscles of the lower back and drains stagnant fluid from the feet and ankles. This pose feels really wonderful after a challenging class or challenging day. Hold for 5 to 10 minutes.

between to restore range of motion and maximize performance while decreasing risk for injury. “I love to move and I love to teach people how to move,” Riddick said. “I don’t care what size, what shape or what your background is, I just want you to enjoy moving.” At Core Physique, Riddick offers a Saturday morning group fitness class open to the community and reiterated Saunders’ sentiments on the importance of a strong core. “What you really need to understand is that as we sit more, our body and our muscles start to lay tissue and we lose mobility and flexibility,” Riddick explained. “When we go to work out, [our bodies] find the path of least resistance.” In other words, if you try to squat, your body is going to do a squat — but it isn’t necessarily able to do it properly. Over time, repeating the improper formation causes the body to break down because the muscles are being used differently than how they were designed to move. “[For] a lot of people, their biomechanics are just off. Their hips are locked up, their glutes are weak, their quads are too strong and we have to make that shift,” she added. To get started on a correct path, Riddick recommends a Functional Movement Screening (FMS) to determine one’s baseline. Then Core Physique’s trainers can customize workouts — perhaps retrain the body to properly squat with use of suspension bands, then gradually intensify the movement to add kettle bells.

f inding peace AMONG THE PULL OF SEDONA’S RED ROCKS

Some come for the views or the adventure.

Others come for the healing and spiritual guidance for which the area is known. I had come to the Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Ariz. for all of the above. Why not venture in the vicinity of vortexes? Eager to feel “magnetic forces,” I assessed the dusty trail I’d chosen to hike in the Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness and debated my options: I could peer over the precipice in front of me (not likely), attempt to scale the crimson monolith beside me (even less likely) or head back to the resort. Flanked by a canvas of canyons and paralyzed with possibilities, I stared into the horizon in search of an answer … or at least an invisible push. It didn’t happen. I did, however, sense something was definitely different in Sedona, as if the rocks knew something I didn’t. I would have to wait to find out. Moving Forward Said to possess a captivating past, Boynton Canyon is home to Enchantment Resort, an all-inclusive, boutique spa resort perched approximately 114 miles south of the Grand Canyon. Blending into its iconic Southwest backdrop, the 70-acre resort coordinates culture commensurate with its rugged splendor. A similar description is apt for the resort’s casitas, which guests call home while visiting. As fate would have it, my casita sat a mere 3-minute walk from the world-renowned Mii amo spa. one of the first destination spas within a resort, it is an achievement in architecture as much as a luxurious experience. The spa, situated in the slope of a canyon wall, is decorated in Native American colors and design elements that nod respectfully to its indigenous roots. Mii amo is a Yuman word meaning “to continue one’s path, moving forward, or journey,” so it’s no surprise that much like its natural surroundings, the spa embraces a holistic approach to rejuvenation. The level of expertise for therapists in Sedona, revered as it is for therapeutic qualities,

is just as sublime as the resort’s five-star amenities. Utilizing the anti-aging properties of the prickly pear and pomegranate seed extracts, my 60-minute Prickly Pear Butter experience also included a refreshing sea salt and jojoba body polish followed by a wrap in warm massage sheets. While the spa has its fair share of treatments typically available, Mii amo offers speciality options as well such as the Aura-Soma color reading (a color system said to reveal who we really are, our talents, our gifts and life lessons) and Inner Quest, which uses the four directions of the Medicine Wheel representing the four stages of life. Tucked into the folds of its 24,000-square foot, bi-level building is also a fitness facility, juice bar, fabulous restaurant and an open kitchen, where I would return later for a cooking demonstration. Ahh … the food. Essentially the only competition the view has comes from the culinary creations found at each of Enchantment’s dining options — from cocktails and appetizers at View 180, to dinner at Chi-Ah-Chi, the resort’s signature restaurant and desert around the fire pit at Tii Gavo. Appeasing my appetite came second to the tugging on my curiosity. Inside the spa awaited the Crystal Grotto — a

place of ceremony and transformation based on a Native American kiva — and the Mii amo cairn garden in the central atrium of the spa. Setting an Intention Sitting still is not one of my strengths, so walking into the meditation grotto was an exercise far outside my comfort zone. Thankfully, a sign stands sentry at the entrance reminding regulars and educating the inexperienced like myself on how to properly participate. I was to enter to the left and walk clockwise around the circle to the last available seat. Next, it read: Stand on the earth, feel the power of mother earth supporting you. Take three deep breaths into your abdomen. Relax your shoulders and let your worries fall like water off of a duck’s back. Take a seat. Take a moment to focus on the crystal and set your

intention for the day. Your intention may be to relax, to breathe deeply, be joyful, or whatever your heart desires. What it didn’t explain was how to silence the noises in my head. Any intention of being relaxed had already been accomplished by the massage … which enabled me to breathe deeply … and that made me joyful. So far, I was on a good path and it had little to do with the crystals or the burning sage wafting throughout the grotto. Eventually, I tuned into the guided meditation in hopes that it might work. My visit to Enchantment Resort came

EEEEEE shortly after Father’s Day weekend during which we always also celebrated my dad’s birthday. I had stumbled my way through the first round of dad-day holidays without him and was looking forward to a healthy escape away from everyday life. Turns out, you can’t always dodge life’s punches and fi nding a way to “continue on one’s path” becomes key. Perhaps this explains why the spa also has a labyrinth and a cairn garden. The ritual of stacking stones into a pile, called a cairn, is a centuries-old practice used to memorialize people, locations and events. Ranging in size and shape, the stones are usually indigenous and while Native Americans assembled cairns for ceremonial purposes, the process is also associated with prayer or meditation as the task of selecting each stone has proven restorative. I found where I wanted to place my cairn and took my sweet time deciding which rocks worked best. I topped it with a wishing stone, said to infuse a sense of peacefulness, and let out a long sigh. Whether I was acknowledging the end or the beginning of something bigger would have to be settled later — after the pull of Enchantment’s adventurous activities had been answered. Getting into a Groove Rising before Sedona’s wildlife the next morning, my friend and I donned our mountain bike gear and headed to meet our guide. Having never been on a mountain bike, my friend was rightfully nervous and despite any invincibility I had in my 20s, I too was concerned. Created for daring dames eager to tackle the toughest trails as well as for those of us simply looking for a fun day on the bike, the Diamonds in the Rough program has become a popular outing for female guests. Though the resort offers plenty of opportunity for adults, families and youngsters to receive instruction with a guide

both privately and in a group, the need still existed for a women’s only option — taught by women, to women. Our instructor spent two hours leading us along the area’s best single track, stopping at important places to demonstrate the best technique for that particular part of the terrain. It was the perfect start to a day that was bookended with exercise. The same afternoon, I moseyed down to the tennis court for a much-needed lesson. Enchantment has been a hub for avid tennis players since 1987, when John Gardiner’s Tennis Ranch first opened. As tennis enthusiasts came to understand and appreciate the allure of the locale, “Enchantment Resort” seemed a more appropriate moniker. A bit of enchanting was required by my tennis instructor Claudette Laliberte, the USPTA certified Elite Professional voted USTA Northern Arizona Teaching Pro of the Year in 2014. Besides being “slightly” rusty, I also happened to forget that while the altitude hadn’t affected my breathing, it certainly was a factor when hitting the ball. A few of my fi rst shots “might” have sailed over the court and into the bocce ball area before the ever-patient Laliberte managed to settle my swing. Friendly reminder: the lower density of the air means the ball will travel farther so power is not as essential as control. Being able to rally and having a professional fix my bad habits left me eager to play again, but Enchantment Resort offers more than 100 activities each week — from yoga classes, mountain bike/hiking excursions, vortex walks and tennis lessons to rituals in the Crystal Grotto, cooking demonstrations, Native American Flute, wine tastings and stargazing — all of which are free to registered guests. Once the sun had set and twilight had settled in, I returned to the tennis court for stargazing in Sedona’s night sky. I imagined everyone on their backs staring toward the heavens; instead, local experts

had strategically arranged high-powered telescopes around the court for optimal viewing. When it was my turn, I peered through the lens, paused, lifted my head above the telescope and then dove back for another peek. There were Saturn’s rings as close and clear as if someone was holding a picture on the other side.

Finding an Answer Maybe I’d realized it already, but that night, it finally hit me. Destinations can be beautiful, but the memorable ones become experiences we don’t forget. Yes, Sedona’s rocks, lined in lighter whites and tans at the top with burnt orange and canyon reds between layers, are breathtaking. Yes, Enchantment Resort encourages guests to nourish body, mind and soul with the incredible amenities available. Ultimately though, like the crevices and indentations in the rocks, where promise and character reveal a sense of survival, the magnetic forces are found within. On the walk back to my casita, I thought about the trail I’d hiked only days earlier. I couldn’t see it in the dark, but I no longer needed to — I knew it was out there. That it would always be there. Clearly, I had come to remember. PN F O R M O R E I N F O R M AT I O N enchantmentresort.com

As the story goes, hundreds of years ago, YavapaiApache prophets foretold the coming of a great flood that would destroy their tribe. A wise man of the tribe created a boat out of a hollow Cottonwood log and placed his young daughter in it with provisions to sustain her and keep her safe during the flood. The daughter survived and came to rest in what is now known as Boynton Canyon. As the only living person left from her tribe, she performed the necessary ceremonies and with the help of the sun and rain gods, she conceived and the tribe was begun anew. Later, a medicine man built a shrine in the canyon in the “Mother’s” honor and it is believed that her spirit remains to this day.

looking for an THE MISUNDERSTOOD WORLD OF LIPEDEMA AND THE ROSWELL DOCTOR DEDICATED TO A SOLUTION { WRITTEN BY A MBER LA N I E R N AG L E }

For years, Leigh Elke sensed

something was wrong with her body. No matter how little she ate or how much she exercised, her weight continued to climb. Her body had a strange, disproportionate appearance with most of her weight concentrated in her lower body — legs, hips and thighs. At one point, Elke wore a size 8 shirt and size 18 pants. “I had no idea what was happening to me,” Elke recalled. “My mom and grandmother were obese, so I assumed I was [gaining weight] like them. Even doctors believed I was overeating. They put me on diet and exercise programs, but no matter how hard I tried, I could never achieve significant weight loss.” After giving birth to the second of her three children, Elke elected to have gastric bypass surgery. Despite losing 200 pounds, the fat deposits in her legs, hips, thighs and arms didn’t melt away. In her early 30s, her gait was distorted and she was on the verge of having to use a walker. Even driving was a challenge because it was difficult to buckle her seat belt. "[The] worst part was the gradual loss of mobility and the pain,” she said. “I couldn’t chase my kids around, and I felt like I was failing as a mom.” But then she saw a photo of a woman on the Internet — a woman whose unusual body profile was similar to her own. “It said that the woman had lipedema,” Elke said. “I didn’t know what that was.”

Searching for Solutions That all changed in June 2014 when Dr. Karen L. Herbst, an endocrinologist specializing in fat disorders at the University of Arizona, confirmed that Elke, too, suffered from lipedema. Though few have ever heard of it, this condition can affect up to 11 percent of all women. Simply put, it is a disorder of adipose (fatty) tissue that causes abnormal, bilateral and symmetrical swelling of the legs and hips. The accumulations of fat and fluid in the tissues under the skin extend down the leg where the fat forms a ring just above the ankle, while feet remain unaffected. Armed with a correct diagnosis, Elke, a Virginia resident, sought help for her condition. Her search led to Dr. Marcia Byrd, who successfully treats women with lipedema using a gentle, lymphatic-sparing water-jet-assisted liposuction (WAL) procedure. Byrd holds a medical degree from the University of South Alabama Medical College and has trained in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Alabama Medical Center, as well as in liposuction with doctors in Europe. She moved to Atlanta in 1981 to open an immediate care center. Through the years, several of Byrd’s patients complained to her about leg pain. One day, a patient showed her photos and an article that introduced her to Dr. Josef Stutz. “I had never heard of lipedema until that day,” she said.

“I continued to research the condition and eventually decided to travel to Germany to train with Dr. Stutz. He’s a worldrenowned lipedema surgeon and a pioneer of WAL.” Leading the Way Today, Byrd is the medical director of Byrd Aesthetic & AntiAging Center and the Lipedema Liposuction Center in Roswell. As one of approximately 10 doctors in the country treating this painful disorder and one of only five using WAL to stop its progression, Byrd has become an authority on lipedema. “Being able to help these women has been a tremendously rewarding experience for me,” she said. “And I look forward to helping other women regain their mobility, reduce their pain, heal psychologically and get their lives back on track.” She reiterated how patients are poorly understood and commonly misdiagnosed. “Far too often, it is confused with obesity and the patient is placed on a diet and exercise

regimen,” Byrd said. “But lipedema fat cannot be reduced by exercise or dieting, and so the patient gets discouraged.” The disorder can be distinguished by several characteristics: it occurs almost exclusively in females; some cases have a genetic component, with approximately 60 percent of women noting another woman in the family had a similar condition; affected skin tends to bruise more easily; and it causes pain and discomfort in women of all sizes — from the seriously underweight to the morbidly obese. “We don’t know what causes lipedema yet, but we believe it is triggered by hormonal changes,” Byrd said. “The first signs usually occur at puberty, during or after pregnancy and at perimenopause.” She also noted that the condition progresses through four stages. In the first stage, the lower body begins to appear a bit disproportionate to other areas. The skin surface is smooth with palpable small nodules under the skin. In the second stage, the woman’s skin is uneven and the nodules under the skin grow larger. The affected areas look like cellulite. “In stage three, we see globular deformities, fat folds over the knees and an overall increase in fatty tissue,” Byrd said. “Women in stage three usually have an abnormal gait, struggle with [mobility], have pain in the knees, and some develop osteoarthritis in their knees and hips. In fact, knee replacement is very common in women with advanced lipedema.” In the last stage, the condition is referred to as lipolymphedema, because the patient develops lymphedema, a more serious medical condition where the lymph vessels are irreversibly damaged and unable to adequately drain lymph fluid. The swelling of the affected tissue can no longer be relieved by elevation and other treatments. “Early diagnosis is vital to stop the symptoms from progressing,” Byrd said. “It is a painful medical condition that gets worse over time, and there is an immense psychological component as well. These women are often unfairly stigmatized for years.” Byrd said she feels honored to be able to help women who have been wrongly judged, blamed and ridiculed for their size, shape and weight. “For patients who have suffered in silence, it’s simply a relief to hear the diagnosis,” she said. “It’s more than just fat, and there is a solution.” Lasting Hope Traditional treatments include compression stockings, rare adipose diet, leg pumps, physical therapy, deep-water exercise and manual lymphatic drainage massage, however these pointsnorthatlanta.com | April 2015 | Points North

treatments don’t permanently reverse the condition. “WAL is showing great promise,” Byrd said. “In Germany, Dr. Stutz has been performing WAL on his patients for two decades, and so far, he has not had to repeat the procedure on any of his patients. It seems to be a long-term, if not permanent, solution for women [who are] suffering.” Byrd, who has performed WAL for several years, explained it is different from the more common tumescent liposuction for the ability to preserve the integrity of the lymphatic system while removing lipedematous adipose tissue. She began using the treatment on lipedema patients just over a year ago with very positive results. Elke is one of these patients. “I had the first of several procedures in August of last year,” Elke said. “There is a limit to how much fat a doctor can remove at one time. So far, I’ve had three leg surgeries and one session on my arms. I have three more to go.” After each session, Elke experiences bruising, soreness and dizziness. She wears compression wraps to control the postoperative swelling. She invests a lot of time in planning, travel and recovery, and although her insurance company agreed to pay a portion, she has incurred a significant amount of out-of-pocket expenses in her pursuit. “But it’s working and the results have been worth it all,” Elke said. “Dr. Byrd gave me my life back. I can chase my kids around again and the transformation goes far beyond my physical appearance. Mentally, I’m in a much better place now, too. My whole outlook on life has changed for the better.” PN
