TRANSGENDER AND QUEER STUDENTS OF MERIT.

Point and Partners Launch educate2impact day – May 21 On May 21, Point and our community partners are thrilled to inaugurate “educate2impact day,” an opportunity to encourage students to finish school, whether high school or college, and get their degree. Education helps empower the LGBTQ community and reduces the social stigma and prejudice that LGBTQ individuals often experience. A highlight of educate2mpact day will be a Twitter chat with guests discussing ways to help students discover the many types

of financial assistance available to assist them in funding their higher education pursuits. To mark the day, supporters are encouraged to add the educate2impact day logo to their profile photo on social media sites such as Facebook via the easy to use toolkit available at www.educate2impact.org. There are also “selfie diplomas” you can print and post online to share words of encouragement to students. Follow our Twitter hashtag #educate2impact.

Dear Friends, I often speak of the “Point family” —our scholars, alumni, mentors, members of our boards, trustees, staff, as well as our Cornerstone Society and Valedictorian Society members. It is a growing, robust family of people who care about Point’s mission and do what they can to help each other. Beyond our Point family are the partnerships and coalitions Point is involved with. Earlier this year we partnered with Campus Pride to launch an LGBT Scholarship Database to help make it easier for students to find LGBTQ scholarships and other financial assistance (see p3). In March, Point joined a coalition of LGBTQ and allied groups, brought together by People for the American Way, to advocate and advance two important pieces of federal legislation: the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA, H.R. 1199 & S. 403) and the Student NonDiscrimination Act (SNDA, H.R. 1652 & S. 1088). On May 21 we will inaugurate “educate2impact day” (article, p1),

focusing attention on the importance of students finishing school and receiving their degrees. Point is inviting many of our LGBTQ and allied peer organizations to join us for educate2impact day and share resources and messages of support to empower LGBTQ young people. Our Point family is stronger because we actively participate in the larger LGBTQ and allied community. It is what we ask of our scholars with their community service projects, and it brings us great pride when we see Point Alumni go on to become leaders in their professions, get elected to public office and become involved in issues such as advancing the number of states with samesex marriage rights. Thank you to everyone who supports our Point family through your gifts and volunteer efforts. Together we are improving not just LGBTQ students’ lives, but society. Jorge Valencia

2014 Scholarship Applications Update

Point Chief of Staff Nanci Glogauer and Academic & Project Manager Jonathan Rosales

Point’s 2014 application period opened November 1, 2013, with a deadline to submit Part I of the application by January 21, 2014. The scholar selection process began with 83 Point directors, trustees, alumni, volunteers and staff reviewing more than 2,000 submitted scholarship applications. Each application is read and scored a minimum of two times. In March, the scholar selection process continued with a meeting in Chicago to further review semifinalist candidates. In late April, finalists will travel to San Francisco for in-person interviews with Point board members and staff. The 2014 Point Scholar Class will be announced in June of 2014.

Regional Leadership Forums Spring is Regional Leadership Forum (RLF) season for the Point family across the country. RLF cities include Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Scholars, alumni, mentors, board members, trustees and staff share a meal and enjoy presentations, discussions and catching up with all the exciting things going on in the lives of their fellow Point family members.

Scholarship Database Launches in Partnership with Campus Pride Point Foundation has partnered with Campus Pride to launch the National LGBT Scholarship Database. The new online dynamic database is free and provides LGBTQ and ally students with the largest, most comprehensive source of LGBTQ scholarship and funding resources in the nation. Individuals can search for scholarships available at certain campuses, state by state, regionally or nationally. New scholarships may be listed by a campus or any funding organization by simply logging into the database. There are no charges to view scholarships or to list scholarships at the web site: www.campuspride.org/Scholarships.

Alumna Erika Turner

The annual January kickoff reception in advance of April’s Point Honors New York (honoring Dr. Neal Baer and Lena Dunham) was held at the astonishing studio of artist Hunt Slonem. Nearly 100 guests enjoyed appetizers and cocktails at the kickoff, as well as hearing Alumna Erika Turner (photo left) share how Point Foundation has helped her even after graduating from college. Thank you to Mr. Slonem, Richard Ziegelasch, the Point Honors Honorary Co-Chairs and Host Committee, and liquor sponsor Grey Goose for making the kickoff a success.
