The Orchards Kier & Watford Borough Council, Watford

140 Family Houses

40 Flats

250 Sq.M Nursery

The Orchards is a forward thinking residential project with an innovative approach to family housing, which challenges the traditional design standards. Housing typologies were carefully designed to achieve maximum privacy levels with a minimum separation distances between buildings. Multi-layered outdoor open spaces within the buildings were introduced in order to reduce the plot

land-take. This unlocked an opportunity to bring the community closer together and propose secure semi-private courtyards for the residents to enjoy. The projects aims is not only to provide much needed homes but also reduce the environmental impact and implement sustainable standards from inception to completion.

Walton-on-Thames Zahawi & Zahawi Ltd, Surrey Located within the centre of Walton-onThames’ prominent High Street, this project realised the potential of the site by proposing four high-quality retail units at street level with 30 residential units above. The proposal implemented pioneering material and design technologies to minimise the impact of balconies placed along the High Street. The scheme acts as a modern transition for its

11

occupants, with the prominent High Street positioned along its principal facade and green amenity space located to the rear. The design responded directly to a number of strict site constraints, including Heritage, height and its location within an Air Quality Management Zone.

Anchor Springs BPIM Ropemaker, Littlehampton Located on an existing disused Waitrose site and car park in Littlehampton, this project of mixed use residential and retail spaces had to respond well to the vernacular architecture and local context. Littlehampton is going through a transitional period and this project aimed to enhance the town centre by designing a proposal that would engage the community and link the residential north of Littlehampton

15

to the more retail south. The constraints of the site required careful consideration of building height, overlooking distances and amenity space. A large central shared space sits in between the two buildings helping to create a sense of community and promote community engagement.

The site contains 5500 Sq.M of disused industrial kilns, warehouses and out houses. The masterplan was designed to create a small residential complex focussed around the rich history of the site. Historic elements were retained

25

including the grand warehouse at the heart of the scheme. Brick chimneys and kilns were also retained and the traditional Funton brick were reused across the site emphasising the historical interest. The scheme provides 53 residential dwellings across the site.

Lordswood Urban Extension Palm Developments Ltd, Chatham Lordswood Urban extension is located on a site surrounded by ancient woodland. This unique development embraces this rich rural setting containing 100 ecologically friendly residential units. Working with this beautiful landscape, the project sustains itself by using a woodland furnace and is designed to be constructed from local sustainable materials. The project found

27

that there was sufficient woodland resource available, both adjoining the developed area and also within that part of Cowbeck Woods. This created an opportunity to run a wood fuel-powered biomass facility providing heat to the dwellings from the products arising from the reintroduction of coppice management, running in accordance with nature conservation principles.

Chilterns Shopping Centre Scoop, High Wycombe This project involved the re-development of the Chilterns shopping centre and re-designed it into high-quality retail units at ground level with 600+ Private Rental Sector (PRS) flats forming the remainder of the development. The design proposed removing the inwardlooking shopping centre in favour of promoting outward-facing retail units. The scheme responded to a number of site constraints

including topography, neighbouring buildings and existing listed buildings. The massing of the project was developed in a manner which challenged height by creating a large residential block, set-back from the street. A large courtyard provided amenity space within the development.

Chongqing Masterplan Chongqing Industrial Museum Estate Ltd, Chongqing POD were invited to participate in an international closed competition in Chongqing, China, to revive a disused steel rolling factory into a new large scale mixed-use development that would deliver a brand new asset for the community. The proposal included, retail units, offices, hotels, industrial museum and a public space strategy to locate the development into the wider fabric. The retails act as a

circuit of attractive shopping that supports the museum, exhibition, hotel, residential and office buildings. The circuit is a carefully controlled route that is an experience of environments, surprise buildings and leisurely public landscapes. The entire concept attempts to create an event and experience to attract visitors. This engagement can be educational, playful and commercial.

West Beach Private Client, Whitstable POD Architects designed and built this project on the secluded land to the west of Whitstable seaside. The choice of materials has been carefully chosen to reflect Whitstable historic fishermen’s huts that line the seafront. Vertical timber battens create a robust weather resistant cladding that shields the hut from the rough conditions of the coastline. Inside the new

space is a refuge from the harsh conditions that is designed to sit in contrast to the exterior finish.
