Luce
After being adopted by a white couple (Watts and Roth) and removed from the war-torn African country of Eritrea, Luce (Harrison Jr.) enjoys a peaceful life. He’s a beloved and wellrespected student at his high school and is both academically and athletically inclined. When his history teacher, Harriet Wilson (Spencer), repeatedly praises him for being a shining example, and singles him out time and again, he expresses his dislike for her and for the tokenism he feels is being foisted on him. Luce raises Ms. Wilson’s suspicions when he takes an alarmingly controversial stance in a writing assignment, and she takes it upon herself to warn his parents about his work, as well as other concerning activities, including bringing fireworks to school.
