Late goal lifts Edmonds-Woodway to win By David Krueger Herald Writer

EDMONDS — Nothing like a clutch goal to calm an anxious soccer coach’s nerves. The Edmonds-Woodway Warriors scored twice off corner kicks — the second coming in the 76th minute to break a nerve-racking 1-1 tie — and went on to beat Seattle Prep 2-1 Saturday in a girls 3A state quarterfinal game at Edmonds Stadium. “I’m not going to be able to eat or drink for hours,” E-W coach Bill LeCompte said. “That is, by far, the best team we’ve seen all year and how we pulled that off I’m not sure. I can’t believe that we did it.” E-W got the game-winning goal from Rylee Peterson, who scored off an assist by Ashleigh Fonsen. It was the second assist for Fonsen, who also set up E-W’s first goal in the 32nd minute. Isabella Meagher was on the other end of that corner kick to head the ball in and give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. “It’s something that we focus on,” LeCompte said of the corner kicks. “We’ve really put an effort into it for years. Some days we know we’re going to be in a game like this, dead balls are the only thing that it may come down to

and for us it did. It carried us in the first half and it carried us in the second half.” Seattle Prep (18-2) tied the score 1-1 just three minutes into the second half. Laura Roberts took a shot from 25 yards out that spun away from Edmonds-Woodway goalkeeper Kiera Towell. It was the only blemish for Towell, who made several big saves in the second half as the Panthers continued to attack the Edmonds-Woodway (17-3-1) defense.

“When you have one of the best keepers in the state, it’s phenomenal the number of times she has to step up. And she does it,” LeCompte said. Towell noted that making saves on tough shots late in the contest is one of her favorite parts of the game. “I’m really nervous, but it’s also really exciting because I like making the big saves. ... If they don’t take good shots, I can’t make big saves,” Towell said. “... That game

was so amazing. It was intense but we played well. When we scored, everything got better.” Seattle Prep spent a lot of time in front of the Edmonds-Woodway goal in the second half but was unable to find the back of the net. Panthers freshman Sophie Hirst had a few shots on goal but each was denied by Towell. On the sidelines, LeCompte was in awe of Towell’s effort — and Edmonds-Woodway’s luck. “The ball that she parried into the crossbar that bounced right back into her lap — I don’t know how that happened,” LeCompte said. The victory continued a historic season for the E-W girls soccer program, which had never been to the state quarterfinals. Now, the Warriors are guaranteed two more games. “This is huge. It’s school history and we’re in the semifinals,” Towell said. “We’re one of the top four teams in the state. It’s incredible. Coming into this it was like, ‘OK, this could be my last game.’ Now I know that I have two more.” Edmonds-Woodway faces Bellevue at 2 p.m. Friday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. The Warriors lost to Bellevue 2-0 in a non-conference game on Sept. 11.

Newport sacks Lake Stevens By David Krueger Herald Writer

LAKE STEVENS — It was an unfortunate case of deja vu for the Lake Stevens football team Saturday night. For the second straight year the Vikings went up against Newport in the playoffs, and for the second straight year the Knights ended Lake Stevens’ season. Newport rushed for more than 500 yards and held Lake Stevens to 10 offensive plays in the second half as the Knights defeated Lake Stevens 43-40 in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament at Lake Stevens High School. Last season, Newport won 62-35 to knock Lake Stevens out of the 4A Quad-District playoffs. “They’ve only thrown the ball 24 times all year, so we kind of figured what their game plan was,” Lake Stevens coach Tom Tri said. “But you still have to be able to stop it and they were pretty physical up front. We had a hard time stopping their run even though we knew it was coming.” After a frantic first half that saw 61 total points scored, the two teams combined for 22 in the second half. Newport (9-2) took its second lead of the game on a Nick Keithley touchdown run early in the third quarter. Lake Stevens answered with a 4-yard score by running back Andrew Grimes, putting the Vikings back on top, 40-36. That lead held until about three minutes into the fourth quarter when Paul Wells’ third touchdown of the game gave the lead back to Newport, which retained it the rest of the way. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Lake Stevens quarterback Jacob Eason threw a pass that was intercepted by Newport’s Jordan

Sanberg. However, the Knights returned the ball to Lake Stevens four plays later with a fumble on fourth-and-inches, giving the Vikings the ball on the Newport 24-yard line. Lake Stevens (9-2) drove down to the 6-yard line before fumbling the ball back to the Knights in the red zone. Newport, which finished the game with 541 yards on 83 carries, took possession of the ball with 6:05 left in the game and ran out the clock. “It’s something that they’re really good at,” Tri said. “They’ve done it to teams all year long.” Lake Stevens fared much better in the first half of the game, jumping out to the lead almost as soon as the opening whistle blew. It took just 14 seconds for Lake Stevens to get its first lead of the game when junior Brandon Otis returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. It was the first of two return scores for the Vikings, who added an 88-yard kickoff return by Hunter Eckstrom late in the first quarter. “Any time we can score on (special teams), you give yourself a huge advantage,” Tri said. “We had the momentum there in the first half. We just had a few mistakes we didn’t capitalize on.”

King’s football team tops La Center, 42-21 Herald staff RIDGEFIELD — Another year, another trip to the state quarterfinals for the King’s Knights. King’s reached the final eight of the Class 1A state tournament for the sixth consecutive season, beating La Center 42-21 on Saturday at Ridgefield High School. Led by quarterback Koa Wilkins, King’s bolted to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Wilkins accounted for two of the Knights’ three touchdowns in the period. He opened the scoring with a 9-yard run and also threw a 24-year TD pass to Ryan Fransen. Andrew Cline scored the Knights’ other first-quarter touchdown on a

1-yard run. Wilkins finished the game 12-for-16 for 130 yards and two touchdowns. Cline rushed eight times for 64 yards and two scores. Fransen caught five passes for 63 yards and two scores. Defensive ends Edmund Sundquist and Duncan Cull keyed a strong defensive effort that helped King’s build a 35-6 lead going into the fourth quarter. Sundquist had five tackles and returned a third-quarter fumble recovery 76 yards for a score. Cull had two sacks and also recovered a fumble. King’s (9-2) faces the winner of Saturday night’s Cascade Christian-Hoquiam game in next week’s quarterfinals.

Grimes had rushing touchdowns of 19 and 20 yards in the first half to help Lake Stevens pull out to a 33-15 lead. He added his third score in the second half and finished with 12 carries for 95 yards, bringing his season total to a school record 1,688 yards, breaking the old mark of 1,479 set by Isaac Molstre in 2006, according to the Lake Stevens team statistician. But Newport started its run late in the second quarter, with a 48-yard touchdown run by Sanberg and a 12-yard score from Wells to pull to within 33-28 by halftime. “I’m just really proud of our guys. They played hard,” Tri said. “We just have to make plays when it counts in big games and they made a few more than we did tonight and that was really the difference.” Lake Stevens suffered another loss when junior linebacker/running back Sam Burke was injured on Wells’ second touchdown run. Tri said Burke suffered a broken leg. “You never want to see that happen to anybody,” Tri said. “It might take the wind out of your sails a little bit but at the same time you also want to rally for your brother and for the family. So guys wanted to play hard for Sam.”

Jackson shuts out South Kitsap By Erik Erickson Herald Writer

EVERETT — The Jackson girls soccer team is one of just four teams remaining in the Class 4A state tournament after securing its fourth straight victory, a 2-0 win over South Kitsap in a quarterfinal game Saturday at Everett Memorial Stadium. “It was a building year,” Jackson coach Jesslyn Kellerman said. “I think each game and each week we got better and we are playing the way we want to play just at the right time.” Junior midfielder Kristina Serres broke open a scoreless tie in the 27th minute with a breakaway goal. It was one of several chances on the night for Jackson, which recorded 10 shots, six of which were on goal. “I was really nervous because I haven’t had the best season scoring-wise this year and I’ve been in a little bit of a drought lately,” Serres said. “But I just knew that I really needed that for a confidence booster and to get my team pumped up. When it went in, it was unreal.” Freshman forward Jadyn Edwards gave the Timberwolves an insurance goal in the 45th minute when she headed home a short corner cross from senior defender Olivia Carter. Jackson controlled the pace of play for the remainder of the second half to secure its 11th shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Callie Vanaelst recorded seven saves. Vanaelst was put to the test in the opening minutes of the second half, when she made saves on back-toback shots before Edwards put the Timberwolves up 2-0. “Callie played huge,” Kellerman said. “She took away at least a couple goals today. She played well, our defense did a really good job crashing the box when she made a save, there was nothing for them to finish up on.” Jackson plays Skyline in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. Skyline defeated Jackson 4-0 in the opening game of the season.

Bellevue 1, Arlington 0 BELLEVUE — A goal by Bellevue in the sixth minute was all the Wolverines needed to beat Arlington in a quarterfinal match of the 3A state girls soccer tournament. “It was a long cross from the outside right backs and Jojo (Harber) headed it in,” Arlington head coach Nathan Davis said. The loss ended the season for the Eagles (17-5-0). Bellevue moves on to a semifinal match against EdmondsWoodway on Friday.

King’s 2, Meridian 0 BELLINGHAM — King’s scored twice in the game’s first 14 minutes and goalkeeper Madeline Nielsen made them hold up as the Knights beat Meridian in the Class 2A state quarterfinals. Katie Stella scored in the fourth minute, knocking in a rebound after a shot by Anisa Uberuaga. Anna Parker added the second goal in the 14th minute off an assist by Abby Jenkins. King’s (19-1-1) plays University Prep at 4 p.m. Friday at Shoreline Stadium in the state semifinals.
