Harbor Highlights will be telling your stories HARBOR HIGHLIGHTS

By JOAN BAY KLOPE

For the past 20 years, I’ve happily written “Faithful Living‚“ for the Whidbey NewsTimes. It’s worked because of two factors: I love writing about issues of faith. I also believe such matters can be respectfully written in ways that bring people together. The longevity of the column undergirds my contentions. I’m pleased that I will continue writing about faith and the contributions of the faith community here on Whidbey. Another gift of writing a weekly column is the opportunity to tell stories and Whidbey Island is populated by a remarkable landscape of characters. Working with Publisher and Executive Editor Keven Graves and reporter Ron Newberry, we identified a shared vision for highlighting the life events of Whidbey Islanders in a column format. It is with enormous pleasure that I introduce “Harbor Highlights,” and I begin with a topic near and dear to a whole lot of us: When the majority of our winter days are gray, Whidbey Islanders like to get off The Rock in search of a sun break and a lesson or two. RETIRED NAVY Capt. Oz Allen and his wife, Jean Allen, have been venturing off their beloved Whidbey since their retirement began in 1979. Retiring here because of the services offered by Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, they carefully schedule travel into their lives. For 13 years they packed up their motorhome and drove down the West Coast to Baja, Calif., to camp with Navy friends and steep in the Mexican culture. When other parts of the world called, they occasionally took advantage of spaceavailable travel opportunities offered to military members and retirees. They learned that being ready to board a flight where vacant seats suddenly opened up wasn’t stressful to them. They liked the spontaneity and adventure of it all. Those flights took them to New Zealand and Australia and various locations in the South Pacific.

The Allens say they value their travel experiences because their parents worked long into their retirement years and died without experiencing the gifts and lessons of travel. They talk of seeing fantastic parts of the globe, experiencing the deep joy people living in relative poverty generously share with them, and spending treasured time together as a couple. Best of all, say the Allens, “Each time we drive over the Deception Pass Bridge we remind each other that we live in the most beautiful place in the world!” OAK HARBOR Mayor Scott Dudley and his wife, Christine, recently returned from a cruise down the Amazon River in Brazil. They, too, watched their mothers pass away before being able to see much of the world. They value travel as part of their shared life experience as a couple. For Christine, there is a moment each time she visits a new place when she is flooded with gratitude. “I’m frequently caught off guard and think to myself, ‘I can’t believe I’m actually here. I’m so blessed!’” she said. For Scott, travel not only gives him a chance to recharge, but to see how other communities respond to the needs of their residents. During their trip to the Amazon, he and Christine attended a Rotary Club meeting in the City of Manaus and learned that the club was donating a large wrestling mat to a local youth community center searching for ways to keep bored youth positively engaged. He also talked with a club member who weekly loads his personal boat with books and takes his floating library to tribes along the river who enjoy no access to a public library. “I like to see how people adapt, live, and cope with their environments,” he told me this week. “I also challenge myself to understand how people who have so little experience genuine contentment.” Then, Dudley said, he returns home with a renewed promise to never take the beautiful surroundings of Whidbey for granted. “There truly is NO place like home.” n Have a story, event or think someone needs to be recognized in Harbor Highlights?
