A story in last week’s Now highlighted a pair of musicals being staged at secondary schools in North Delta. This week, it’s Surrey’s turn. The calendar is filled with spring productions at many of the 19 secondary schools in the district. Many thanks to Craig N. Wrotniak, of Surrey Drama Teachers’ Association, for helping to compile the following guide to plays being produced (call the presenting school for more show info or tickets): This week, Elgin Park Secondary is presenting Our Town, by Thorton Wilder, until Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. Elsewhere, Sullivan Heights Secondary is doing Our Town in the round, backstage at Bell Performing Arts Centre in late April or early May. Kwantlen Park Secondary is presenting Toy Story on April 17, 18, 19 and 20, at 7 p.m. nightly. The production is part of a larger student initiative called Students Empowering Students (SES). The show has been adapted by students and will be directed by students, with mentorship from both Surrey Little Theatre and Kwantlen Park Fine Arts Department. All proceeds will go toward creating an ongoing scholarship for three young refugees of war living in Northern Uganda. North Surrey Secondary is presenting The Princess Bride this April. Princess Margaret Secondary stages An Evening of One Act Plays: Wait, Wait Bo Bait, The Appointment, and The Interview.
“This is likely to happen during the final week of April,” said Wrotniak. “A wonderful side note: these plays will be directed by recent graduates who have returned to help out and to give back to the program. This warms my heart.” Queen Elizabeth Secondary will be presenting Canterbury Tales from April 25 to 27, at 7:30 p.m. Enver Creek Secondary will be having its annual Spring Drama Festival on May 10-11. Panorama Ridge Secondary Theatre Company is performing Seussical: The Musical from April 17-21, 7 p.m. curtain. “This sensational family-friendly show involves more than 50 Panorama students and staff, working in collaboration on vocals, choreography, costuming, set design and a 14-piece live pit band!” Clayton Heights Secondary is presenting Village of Idiots from April 10-12. LA Matheson Secondary is presenting Frankie and the Gingerbread Man from May 15-18. Fleetwood Park Secondary is putting up Alice In Wonderland sometime in May. Earl Marriott Secondary Theatre Company is presenting The Music Man from April 18-28, evenings from Wednesday to Saturday. Johnston Heights Secondary is presenting The Diary of Anne Frank and The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui, May 9-11. Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary is presenting two one-act plays: Cybermare and Check, Please!. Exact dates are yet to be determined. Betty Huff Elementary theatre company presents Alice in Wonderland Junior from April 16-19, 7 p.m. show times. Tickets available online now and, starting April 1, at the school office.
