SURREY — It’s not every day that a designer gets to see their work worn on the red carpet. But that’s what happened for two Surrey sisters, who started Jaide Clothing in 2007. Surrey-based singer Elise Estrada rocked a black dress designed by the sisters to the 2011 Juno Awards. Teresa and Christina Le said they were ecstatic to be able to work with Estrada. “When she was on the red carpet we were glued to three different TVs. We were glued to different channels to make sure we caught that moment because as far as accomplishments for us, that was probably one of the biggest,” Teresa said. The sisters first styled Estrada for a reality show she was on. Estrada returned and asked the duo to style her for the Junos. “She wore a black draped-back sequin mini-dress to the awards,” Teresa said. “The funny thing is, when we were fitting her, she came out with the dress

on backwards. The front was draping down.” And that’s how Estrada wore it to the awards. “It was meant to be worn that way on her body — not everybody could wear it that way, because she is very petite. She made it her own.” While working with Estrada, the Elise Estrada sisters learned that they were all Holy Cross high school students at one point. The sisters’ designs were also worn by UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste for the 2011 World MMA Awards, which aired on Dec. 11. The sisters have no formal training in design, but they said their journey began when their mom showed them how to sew a pair of pants when they were kids. “We got our artistic and creative side from our mother,” Teresa said. “And my dad, he is the entrepreneur.

Very hard-working, very dedicated and persistent when it comes to his craft. So we blended that together to create our business.” The sisters come from a traditional Vietnamese upbringing. “Education was important,” Teresa said, adding that, at first, fashion was a hobby for them. After attending post-secondary university, the girls decided to start their own fashion company, knowing they could fall back on their education if the business didn’t work out. And four years later, their designs are being worn around the world. They have clients in countries such as China, Australia and the United States. While they started as a dress line, they have now expanded to include tops, outerwear and accessories. The sisters said their next goal is to get into boutiques all around the world. Find their designs at Solar Flare Sun Studio in Burnaby and Hollywood Boutique in Yaletown. Their fashions are online at jaideclothing.com.
