Crime in Surrey

Shootings ‘absolutely unrelated’ Amy Reid

Now staff twitter@amyreid87

After four Surrey shootings in four days — three of which were fatal — police say the incidents are all separate. The recent shootings are “absolutely unrelated,” said Supt. Dan Malo, officer in charge of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Malo also stressed the events are not gangrelated.“This isn’t a trend. This isn’t what we saw in 2008 and 2009.” Malo said IHIT knows who the high players are in the Lower Mainland’s gang scene, and they aren’t involved in these incidents. “There’s a story that needs to get told

around every homicide. That story is unfolding.” Malo said there are more than 100 staff members with IHIT and many of them worked through the Christmas weekend, in addition to police officers from other jurisdictions. Malo said that IHIT investigated 38 homicides in 2010, and the recent murders put this year’s number at 31, six of which were gang-related. A 28-year-old man is the latest victim of violence. He was found dead Tuesday in a yard in North Surrey. At 8:30 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a call about a shooting in the 9500-block of 125th Street. The caller indicated they heard several bangs that sounded like gunshots at about 7:30 a.m.

Police arrived on scene and found the Caucasian man lying dead on a front lawn. “This appears from the onset to be a targeted incident,” said Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Bruce Anderson. “It’s disgusting,” he said of the rash of shootings in recent days. The man’s identity was not made public by Now press time Wednesday. The shootings began on Christmas Eve, just after 4 a.m., when Surrey resident Bradley McPherson, 28, was killed at a house party in the 13100-block of 67A Avenue. The man had no criminal record. McPherson’s mother Susan is asking the public to come forward with information about her son’s death. “Bradley was a fun-loving man who loved

his family and he was in no way involved in illegal activity,” she said in a press release. On Christmas Day, a 27-year-old convenience store clerk identified as Alok Gupta was shot at around 4 p.m. during what police suspect was a robbery at Ken’s Grocery, in the 11700-block of 96th Avenue in Surrey. Witnesses say Gupta crawled to a neighbouring home, the residents of which then called police. Gupta was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. He was working so store owners could spend Christmas together. A 54-year-old woman was also shot Christmas Day, but is expected to survive. Anyone with information about these crimes is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1877-551-IHIT (4448). To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Year in review

2011’s top stories (continued) Here are numbers five through one of the biggest stories of the year in Surrey and the surrounding areas

5. Fatal shootings 4. HST polarizes 3. Canucks’ ride marred by riot involve police the province

2. Wild ride for the political left

1.‘Dubya’ visit sparks protest

t’s a rare occurrence, but Surrey Mounties were involved in two fatal shootings within a few weeks of each other back in March. Adam Brian Purdie, 28, was killed during a shootout with police on March 2, near King George Boulevard just north of Highway 10. Saanich police were asked to investigate the case and found the Surrey Mountie who fired 30 rounds at Purdie to be criminally blameless in his death. “The officer involved in this shooting was left with no alternative other than the use of deadly force,” A/Sgt. Dean Jantzen said at the conclusion of the investigation. The cop’s name was not revealed. He now works in another province. The police investigation into the shooting revealed Purdie was upset about breaking up with a girlfriend and had been within two blocks of her new boyfriend’s home when he hit the traffic check. Meanwhile, Brandon Samuel Beddow, 23, was shot dead on March 23 after the Surrey RCMP was called to a domestic fight call on McBride Avenue in Crescent Beach. Vancouver police department is still investigating that shooting. “We will issue an update when it is concluded in the New Year,” Const. Jana McGuinness said.

his past year was somewhat of a roller coaster ride for those on the left wing of Surrey’s political spectrum. Federal New Democrat leader Jack Layton’s seismic popularity created a political tsunami — dubbed the Orange Crush, after the NDP’s colours — that helped sweep local MP incumbents Sukh Dhaliwal (Liberal, Newton-North Delta) and Dona Cadman (Tory, Surrey North) out of office. Jinny Sims, a resident of North Delta and a former president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, is the first NDP MP to hold the Newton-North Delta riding. The federal NDP took a big hit in August, though, when Layton, 61, died of cancer. But far from benefiting from any type of “Orange Crush,” Surrey’s left-wing civic political candidates were crushed in November’s elections. Surrey First Education slate kept its firm grip on school board, while Surrey Civic Coalition incumbent Ijaz Chatha was replaced by his slate running mate Charlene Dobie, the only SCC candidate to be elected that time out. The near shutout at the polls has left the slate to do some serious soul-searching. Most notably, Surrey’s elder civic statesmen Bob Bose, 79, lost his city councillor’s seat, being one rung short of re-election.

ormer U.S. president George W. Bush coming to Surrey tops the list of news items this year. “Dubya” came to the city to speak at Surrey’s 2011 Regional Economic Summit with former U.S. president Bill Clinton. The summit, to which tickets were $599 a pop, featured a variety of other speakers as well. Several Surrey and Lower Mainland residents expressed their anger leading up to the event, calling Bush a war criminal. Gail Davidson with Lawyers Against the War urged Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts to withdraw her invitation to Bush, but Watts stood her ground. Watts was also insistent that the event, on Oct. 20, cost taxpayers nothing — that it was all paid for by admission fees and sponsorship. A few hundred protesters showed up outside Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel during the event — far fewer than expected. Dozens of police officers barricaded the entrance to the hotel during the protest. Chanted phrases included “Arrest George Bush,” and, “Do your job, enforce the law,” as well as, “Diane Watts. Shame on you.” Many speculated that Watts allowing Bush to come to the summit would hurt her in the upcoming civic election, but she won by a landslide.

ven in a province used to political turbulence, the Harmonized Sales Tax ranks as one of the most polarizing issues in recent times. The HST controversy was a major factor in then premier Gordon Campbell’s plunge in popularity, and it also led to the re-emergence of former premier Bill Vander Zalm into the political limelight to lead the anti-HST fight. Campbell and then Finance Minister Colin Hansen announced the government’s plans to harmonize its provincial sales tax with the federal Goods and Services Tax on July 23, 2009. The HST would combine the seven per cent PST with the five per cent GST, for a single tax rate of 12 per cent. Although the tax was largely supported by the business community, the public balked. Confusion about the tax further fueled the conflict. The HST came into affect on July 1, 2010. Growing opposition to the tax led to a referendum on the issue in the summer of 2011; a total of 1.6 million voters cast ballots. On Aug. 26, Elections BC announced that 54.7 per cent voted to get rid of the tax and 45.3 per cent voted to keep it. After the defeat, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon announced the province was making plans to revert back to the old PST and GST system, a transition that would take about 18 months. Marisa Babic

une 15 was marked by bitterness, disappointment and destruction in the wake of the Vancouver Canucks’ Game 7 loss to the Boston Bruins, ending an otherwise spectacular Stanley Cup run. As the team moved ever closer to the ultimate playoff series, more and more people turned up to celebrate at “Canucks Corner,” at Scott Road and 72nd Avenue on the Surrey/Delta border. There were so many that police began closing down the intersection in anticipation of the fans who turned out — win or loss, rain or shine. Aside from some liquor violations, the celebrations were relatively short and good-natured. The City of Surrey began showing the games on a massive outdoor screen at Central City, much like sites in Vancouver. These too were notably upbeat and family-oriented, even though many people worried about a possible repeat of the 1994 Stanley Cup riot. In spite of large crowds in Surrey and Delta, the postgame rioting was confined to Downtown Vancouver. Surrey sent 100 Mounties and Delta police sent 25 officers to help overwhelmed Vancouver police subdue the riot. So far, 14 people from Surrey and one from Delta are facing charges, with more expected to be announced in January. Carolyn Cooke

NEWS Surrey Christmas Bureau

Hampers for 1,654 families Needy families in Surrey had a turkey on the table and toys for their kids this Christmas, thanks to people who opened their hearts and wallets. Surrey Christmas Bureau volunteers officially registered 1,654 families for hampers this year, coordinator K.C. Gilroy said Tuesday. But counting everyone who came to the bureau’s doorstep seeking help brings that figure to about 2,000 families. Volunteers referred some of those additional families to more appropriate agencies. Others simply didn’t know where else to go. “All kinds of poor souls were individuals who came in off the street,” Gilroy said. “They’re not really on our records but we helped them out.” Gilroy said volunteers were busy right up until Christmas Eve. Two families who had no transportation were unable to make the trip to the Christmas bureau’s headquarters in Whalley, and a couple of kindly volunteers delivered their gifts. Donations of cash and toys were slow to come in this year but Gilroy says they surged around Dec. 20. Despite the last-minute deluge of donations, she

said Surrey Christmas Bureau fell some $20,000 short its fundraising target of $250,000. “We came close,” said Gilroy, who on Tuesday was still rolling coins, proceeds from a gift-wrapping booth at Central City Shopping Centre. “That did well for us, people were very generous.” The agency hopes to balance the books by applying for grants and hosting fundraisers in the new year. She acknowledged the City of Surrey for letting the Christmas bureau use the vacant old Whalley library as its headquarters this year, saying the agency is “extremely K.C. Gilroy grateful.” But the aging structure will be demolished next year to make way for further development at the new City Centre Library site, and that will leave the bureau scrambling to find space anew. The agency might have to join forces with other non-profits in the city that are faced with similar problems, Gilroy noted. “Nothing fast and firm — but other non-profit agencies are looking for a home, too, and that’s something we’ll explore in the new year so we don’t have this space crunch every year.”

Surrey’s naturist and nudist groups are inviting everyone to “brr..ing in the Nude Year.” The Skinnydippers Recreation Club and Surrey’s United Naturists, better known by its acronym SUN, are co-hosting the sixth annual Polar “Bare” Plunge on New Year’s Day. The charity swim takes place in the chilly waters of Boundary Bay directly in front of the giant Crescent Rock boulder just south of Crescent Beach, past the 1,001 Steps elevated walkway located at the western end of 24th Avenue in South Surrey. “Your one-button bathing suit is the usual attire for this clothing-optional swim but Santa hats, fake antlers, body paint and limited festive garments are always appreciated, keeping in mind that less is often more,” organizers advise in an email. Participants are also advised to wear sandals or aquatic shoes to protect feet over the rocks leading to the beach. The swim is a fundraiser for the War Amps Playsafe and

CHAMPS childhood amputee programs. Registration for the Polar Bare Plunge starts at noon and swimmers hit the water at 1 p.m. The festivities will include prizes in a number of categories, including youngest and oldest participant. White Rock’s 42nd annual Polar Bear Swim, hosted by the White Rock Lions, takes place in Semiahmoo Bay. Swim co-ordinator Don Miller is hoping for mild weather to boost participation at the event. “We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed as we do every year,” Miller said Tuesday. “It was a good turnout last year. We had 485 registered swimmers.” Registration begins at 10 a.m. Plunge time is noon. Delta is hosting its polar bear swim at Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen, starting at 1 p.m. Swimmers can download a registration form at corp.delta. bc.ca by clicking on the Events icon.

BOXING WEEK SALE

In brief

Stolen urn sought by North Delta resident Delta police are asking the public for assistance in their attempt to locate an urn that was stolen Christmas Eve during a breakand-enter. The urn contained the ashes of the resident’s late husband and was stolen from a home in the 7800-block of 119th Street. Police believe that the person responsible for the theft of the urn may not have known the box contained ashes of a loved one. The police and family are asking the suspect to return the item by turning it into any community police office or church — no questions asked. The urn is a black silk box, four inches by four inches in size, containing a puck-sized silver container with engraving “Babe LRL- 30-11-33 — 28-10-10.” If you know where it is, call 604-946-4411.

Fundraiser Jan. 2 for sick boy and family SURREY — Adams Road Eelementary school PAC is hosting a tree-chipping and bottle drive fundraiser to help a sick boy and his family. The event takes place at the school at 18228 68th Ave., in Cloverdale, on

Monday, Jan. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Heather Harasymow, one of the event organizers, says partial proceeds from the fundraiser will go to help support the family of the boy, who has inoperable cancer. The boy’s parents are taking care of their son and have been unable to work, Harasymow said. The family is going through a distressing time and wants their privacy respected, she said, adding the boy is a student at a neighbouring school.

Do you have somebody you would like to thank? Or maybe something you want to get off your chest? Send your rose or rotten tomato to edit@thenownewspaper.com. Please keep submissions under 50 words. Watch for Roses and Rotten Tomatoes in the Thursday issue of the now

Rotten tomatoes to the “professional” plumber who entered my basement to replace the hot water tank and absconded with a tray of unique Victorian-era printing type. Guess I should have stood over him instead of being trusting. Rotten tomatoes to those who complain about the Christmas lights in Newton. There are lights of every colour all over houses in Surrey. Get over it. Are there no bigger problems in this city? Shouldn’t you be upset about the homeless and hungry instead?

A lifetime of stinky, rotten tomatoes to the degenerate who broke my car window on the morning of Christmas eve. My car sat there collecting rain until Tuesday because every shop closed early. I’m also on maternity leave so on top of that I’m spending extra money I don’t even have. I do really pity you because you must have so much hate inside to do this to another person, especially during this time of year. I’m just letting you know, you did not ruin my Christmas. Our family and our new baby will still get to that family Christmas dinner with the heat blasting all the way.

I believe what goes around comes around, you’ll get yours someday. Cheers. A big bunch of rotten ones to the writers who complained about those beautiful lights in Newton, blaming them on some anonymous person or group that does not accept “our culture.” If accepting the culture of this country is your goal, then do we get rid of the European (ie. foreign) tradition of Christmas? We have had to adapt to your culture, so please be more accepting of other immigrant cultures as well as the cultures that predate your arrival on this continent.

NEWS The year in review: 2011

Bizarre tales, from bed to beach to beard Amy Reid

Now staff twitter@amyreid87

From Jesus tattoos to piles of rotting fish, it’s been an interesting year in Surrey. Nearly dying ironically saved one man’s life this year. Surrey’s Kevin Carras saved Hope resident Bill McNeill’s life — in more ways than one — when he rescued him from drowning in a tubing accident on the Skagit River last summer. “I saw Jesus looking at me,” McNeill said, referring to Carras’s tattoo of Jesus Christ on his torso. It was the first thing McNeill saw when he came above water. But that’s not where the story ended. After checking into the hospital a few days later, McNeill learned he had two fractured ribs on each side, a bruised spleen and a collapsed lung. Doctors found an extremely large aortic aneurysm, which is an aneurysm in the main blood vessel going to his heart. If it ruptured, he would be dead within one to three minutes. Doctors said it was a miracle it didn’t rupture during the accident. Lynn Smith, McNeill’s mother, said Carras

will be her hero for life. “If he hadn’t had this accident, they never would have found the aneurysm and my son would have been dead in a year.” One Surrey man and his beard scored a high-profile TV appearance this year. Sikh priest Sarwan Singh appeared on the Regis and Kelly show in New York and showed millions of television viewers his beard. At eight feet two and a half inches long, his is believed to be the longest beard in the world. Sikhs must not cut their hair as an article of their faith and Singh, 45, has been growing his beard since he was 15 years old. He has held the Guinness world record for longest beard since 2008. His brother, Balvir Singh, also has an incredibly long beard, at six feet. In White Rock, there was sewage in the water along the beach last summer. A sewer pipe along Marine Drive was plugged, causing effluent to overflow into an adjacent storm drain and out into Semiahmoo Bay. Authorities said the line was plugged by “grease, animal and vegetable material in the sanitary sewage main.” Signs warned the public of a “possible sanitary contamination” of the beach and politely

asked people to “please stay out of the water.” Despite the sewage spill, plenty of people were down at the seashore, many walking the promenade, others down on the sand. Elsewhere, Surrey resident S. Mahil endured two broken vertebrae after an innocent tickle fight went awry. “It was just a regular Saturday morning (on April 16), and my husband and I were just laying in bed chatting and then the kids woke up, and came in the room and started tickling my feet,” said Mahil. Some tickling led to well-intentioned wrestling and, as Mahil backed away from the kids, age five and 12, she landed on the floor neck first. After seven weeks of rigorous and steady therapy at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver, Mahil began to get all her motor skills back. And a steaming pile of fish waste was dumped in Fraser Heights this year. The stench rising from the steaming pile of fish waste was overpowering, the olfactory equivalent of a kick to the stomach. It was a good three or four metres long, three wide and a metre-and-a-half deep. The pile was full of crab shells and sea urchin remains were suspended in an

amorphous matrix of rotting tissue. Reddish-brown liquid ran from the base across the road into a ditch. The site was located on road allowance owned by the provincial highway ministry, so Mainroad Lower Mainland Contracting, the road maintenance contractor, carried out the cleanup. And who could forget the orangutan who escaped from its owner outside the North Surrey Recreation Centre and scaled Central City Office Tower. The monkey almost made it to the top of the 26-storey tower. The pet monkey’s owner, a Simon Fraser University student, was bringing “Pokey” as part of her class presentation on cognitive behavioural therapy. Clearly upset, she declined to give her name, nor would she comment. OK, OK, so that last one didn’t really happen — it was our April Fools joke. But considering the other bizarre happenings in 2011, it’s not that hard to believe.

At the movies

Dark movies top my 10-best list Julie Crawford Columnist

T

here’s a lot of darkness on this list of 2011’s top 10 films, what with alien invasions, psychological manipulation, cancer and war waged by both humans and wizards. Thank goodness there’s a silent film and a movie about a horse (of course) to balance all the pessimism. Blame the economy. And until things improve, we’ll always have Paris. 1. Drive Ryan Gosling was everywhere this year, from the suave superplayer with the Dirty Dancing moves in Crazy Stupid Love to the disillusioned campaign aide in Ides of March. But nowhere was Gosling’s lethal acting prowess on better display than in Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, in which Gosling says more with a pregnant look than 10 pages of dialogue could’ve communicated. He doesn’t have a backstory, he doesn’t even have a name: he’s just “Driver,” stunt man/mechanic by day, who resists his criminal leanings until a beautiful neighbour (an equally flawless Carey Mulligan) and her son are put in harm’s way. Albert Brooks is especially fun to watch as a ruthless Mafioso. It’s a bloodbath. But it’s beautiful. 2. The Artist It’s the silent film that has everybody talking. Writer-director Michel Hazanavicius sets a pitchperfect mood in his film about the changing fortunes of silent film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) once talkies come onto the scene. The new technology makes room for up-andcomers like Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), who goes from extra to headliner in

3. Martha Marcy May Marlene There’s tension from the first frame of firsttime writer-director Sean Durkin’s film, whose idyllic rural setting belies the masochistic goings-on at the hands of cult leader Patrick (John Hawkes, Winter’s Bone). Martha (Elizabeth Olsen) escapes the farm and lands at her sister Lucy’s (Sarah Paulson) lake house. As Martha struggles to reintegrate into conventional society and Lucy tries to decipher the mystery of the past two years (shown to the audience in fitful flashbacks), the sense of menace multiplies. A subtle performance by Olsen (no longer known as younger sister to the twins) gives the film its devastating power. 4. 50/50 Funny movies about cancer are rare. But screenwriter Will Reiser, diagnosed with a spinal tumour at age 25, knows this stuff first-hand. He wrote the screenplay and recruited his buddy Seth Rogen to make sure the movie didn’t suck. Rogen was Reiser’s roommate at the time of his diagnosis, and may or may not have been as obnoxious as Kyle, who reacts to his friend Will’s

7. War Horse Already a hit on London and Broadway’s stages, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse gallops onto the big screen and announces itself as the best family-friendly epic film in years — a history lesson, family drama and horsey love story all rolled into one grand-looking package. Bring your hankies, and check your cynicism at the door.

Ryan Gosling as “Driver” in the impressive Drive, from Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn. (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) diagnosis by using it to pick up girls. Gordon-Levitt takes on a risky role, making every stage of the process — from denial to acceptance — come to life. It’s the best buddy movie of the year. 5. The Tree of Life Yes, there is a dinosaur and some esoteric musings about the cosmos. But all the better to frame director Terrence Malick’s story of how one little family fits into the universe. Brad Pitt, in one of two Oscar-worthy performances of 2011, is the taciturn father to Jack (shown grown as Sean Penn) who looks back on his childhood in 1950s Waco, Texas, on the anniversary of a family tragedy. There is scant dialogue, just luminous performances by Jessica Chastain and

young Hunter McCracken, and once you’re lulled into Malick’s hypnotic rhythm, you won’t want their story to end. 6. Midnight In Paris Woody Allen was long overdue for a hit, and it came courtesy of Midnight in Paris, starring Owen Wilson (perfectly suited to Allen’s brand of hapless hero) as a man longing for an earlier era who wanders the streets of Paris after midnight and runs into his heroes of literature, Hemingway and the Fitzgeralds among them. The greatest cinematic paean to the city of lights in years, the film dispels “the golden age” myth, and is a thinking-person’s celebration of creativity in every age.

8. Super 8, Hugo, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (tie) I know, a tie is cheating, but here are three films that deserve equal praise for catering expertly to children and adults alike, without pandering and poop jokes. In Super 8, producer Steven Spielberg and protégé J.J. Abrams didn’t let an alien invasion and superlative visual effects get in the way of a coming-of-age story that packs an emotional wallop, while Martin Scorsese brought magic back to the multiplex with Hugo, his first 3D venture. And David Yates managed to satisfy just about every muggle out there with his swansong to the franchiseof-all-franchises. 9. The Trip British actor Steve Coogan laments his lack of fame in America. He dreams about it (in a sequence featuring Ben Stiller), and he moans to his agent about it. The whole structure of

The Trip, originally a BBC series, is built around this autobiographical whine. But what a trip: Michael Winterbottom turns the camera on Coogan and fellow Brit impressionist Rob Brydon as they journey the English countryside and sample upper-crust restaurants for a magazine spread. The men talk a lot of nonsense. They battle for who-can-do-the-bestimpressions supremacy, guaranteeing that you’ll never hear Michael Caine the same way again. It’s best to skip the DVD extras, which break the spell of the film as one, long improvised rant between two road-trip buddies. Very funny stuff, indeed. 10. Moneyball Baseball can be pretty boring; baseball stats are most definitely snoreinducing. But here is Brad Pitt, giving us his second Oscar-worthy turn of the year, as Billy Beane, GM of the struggling Oakland A’s, who turns a geeky math theory into the driving recruiting mantra for the team. It’s not all about batting average, it’s about getting on base, insists Yale grad Peter Brand (Jonah Hill). Dull on paper, the numbers game becomes sexy, witty and thrilling onscreen, thanks to screenwriters Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network). A home run, whether you’re a baseball fan or not.

Sisters’ designs hit big stages Amy Reid

SICK of being Sick...

Expertise in Science-Based Natural Health Care

NEWSPAPER.COM

SURREY — It’s not every day that a designer gets to see their work worn on the red carpet. But that’s what happened for two Surrey sisters, who started Jaide Clothing in 2007. Surrey-based singer Elise Estrada rocked a black dress designed by the sisters to the 2011 Juno Awards. Teresa and Christina Le said they were ecstatic to be able to work with Estrada. “When she was on the red carpet we were glued to three different TVs. We were glued to different channels to make sure we caught that moment because as far as accomplishments for us, that was probably one of the biggest,” Teresa said. The sisters first styled Estrada for a reality show she was on. Estrada returned and asked the duo to style her for the Junos. “She wore a black draped-back sequin mini-dress to the awards,” Teresa said. “The funny thing is, when we were fitting her, she came out with the dress

on backwards. The front was draping down.” And that’s how Estrada wore it to the awards. “It was meant to be worn that way on her body — not everybody could wear it that way, because she is very petite. She made it her own.” While working with Estrada, the Elise Estrada sisters learned that they were all Holy Cross high school students at one point. The sisters’ designs were also worn by UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste for the 2011 World MMA Awards, which aired on Dec. 11. The sisters have no formal training in design, but they said their journey began when their mom showed them how to sew a pair of pants when they were kids. “We got our artistic and creative side from our mother,” Teresa said. “And my dad, he is the entrepreneur.

Very hard-working, very dedicated and persistent when it comes to his craft. So we blended that together to create our business.” The sisters come from a traditional Vietnamese upbringing. “Education was important,” Teresa said, adding that, at first, fashion was a hobby for them. After attending post-secondary university, the girls decided to start their own fashion company, knowing they could fall back on their education if the business didn’t work out. And four years later, their designs are being worn around the world. They have clients in countries such as China, Australia and the United States. While they started as a dress line, they have now expanded to include tops, outerwear and accessories. The sisters said their next goal is to get into boutiques all around the world. Find their designs at Solar Flare Sun Studio in Burnaby and Hollywood Boutique in Yaletown. Their fashions are online at jaideclothing.com.

ARTS & LIFE Book review

A wheat-free life is best It’s time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions, and I found just the book to suit those who are wondering how to get rid of their recently acquired holiday pounds. I think it was the title caught my eye: Wheat Belly. Was there such a thing? Or was it the stack of bagels on the dust cover? I already know I should avoid wheat. Years ago I was diagnosed as having a sensitivity to it, but avoiding wheat completely these days means constant vigilance, which is a drag. But I really wanted to know what William Davis, MD, had to say on the subject, particularly given the full title is Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health (Rodale). I wondered if losing weight might really be that simple given the western world’s obesity pandemic. Among the unexpected things I learned from Davis are that whole wheat has a higher glycemic index than table sugar — meaning it makes your blood sugar skyrocket; wheat makes your body produce more damaging small bad cholesterol particles (the kind that cause heart disease and stroke) than does meat, and that a wheat “sensitivity” may actually

be the cause of many otherwise undiagnosed serious, lingering health problems. Yikes. By the time I got to the end of Wheat Belly, I was firmly convinced I needed to take my sensitivity much more seriously. Davis has an engaging writing style that makes the hard science parts go down a bit more easily than they might otherwise. He shines in explaining how wheat consumption relates to heart problems, which is not surprising given he is a cardiologist. What is a surprise are the many stories of his patients with all kinds of health conditions who are made quickly and unexpectedly better by strictly eliminating wheat and other sources of gluten from their diet. Losing the wheat belly, then, is an effortless side effect to treating quite serious conditions, whether formally diagnosed or not. However, for the general public, the real payoff is knowing that the visceral fat — the ring around the belly doctors keep warning people to lose post-haste — is most often caused by or made worse by eating wheat products. Davis gives advice for how to get the wheat out of your diet, and supplies recipes for edible foods to have as replacements. Now the thought of a wheat-free life is looking like a better choice.

ARTS & LIFE The arts

My motto for 2012: Have fun until told to stop ArtsScene Melanie Minty Columnist

H

ere it is, the last arts column for 2011. It’s supposed to be a riff of the past year. Okey-dokey. There might be a problem there: I can’t remember all the happenings to pick out the best, worst, least or most exciting. I am not a collector or historian. And I’m not senile just because I can’t remember everything. My favourite thing of any past year is when I get to be on stage rather than working behind the scenes. So thank you Surrey Little Theatre, Classic Steps and Fraser Valley Gilbert & Sullivan Society for letting me on stage in your productions. Rehearsing and being part of any production does have its price, though. I’m sorry I missed Lucille Lewis’ farewell concert with Surrey Symphony Society. After leading its youth orchestra and teaching violin for more than a quarter of a century, she retired. I missed a lot of other concerts and productions as well and, honestly, I do have

them on the list for 2012. This coming year, I am not wishing to win a lottery (that would be nice), work harder, see more shows or even be a better dancer. Nope. For 2012, my motto is this: “Have as much fun as you can until someone tells you to stop.” One of my favourite cartoons (Maxine) pictures Maxine — a lady of mature years — sitting in front of her computer. The caption reads,“I keep pushing escape, but I’m still here.”Well, me too. I keep pushing escape, but I’m still here, too. And I’m going to have as much fun as I can until someone tells me to stop. I love suspense and mystery, so I am definitely going to have fun viewing Victoria’s House, a turn-of-the-century murder/mystery with supernatural phenomena thrown in. Who doesn’t love a good haunting? This production, by Langley Players, opens Jan. 19 and runs to Feb. 18. Make reservations at reservations@langleyplayers.com and receive a confirmation. My advice is to be patient, as the confirmation is not automated. And be sure to put “reservations” in the subject line. Or call 604-534-7469 (confirmation not available for phone reservations due to volume). See, the suspense starts in just getting a ticket! The Young People’s Opera Society is holding

uses a headset with a single earpiece and volume control that allows them to hear the show and the description simultaneously. VocalEye’s professionally-trained team begins the broadcast 15 minutes before curtain with detailed descriptions of the set, characters and costumes. Once the show begins, the “describer,” speaking into a transmitter, relays the physical action and visual detail between lines of dialogue. This is really cool. VocalEye patrons can also reserve a spot on the Touch Tour. After the performance, VocalEye patrons will be escorted on stage to explore the space, and may handle selected props, costumes and furniture. VocalEye patrons are eligible for a $25 ticket price, and can purchase tickets by phoning 604-501-5566. VocalEye equipment is limited to 20 users per show, so reserving ahead is recommended. Auditions are this week and next in Burnaby, with rehearsals set to begin at Burnaby Lake Pavilion on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 9:30 a.m. To the auditions, bring a resent resumé of all past performances and workshops along with any certificates, and be prepared to sing one solo piece. Surrey Arts Centre has had hearing enhancements for patrons for several years. And now VocalEye audio description will be available for select performances in 2012. Awesome. Patrons who are blind or partially sighted can soon enjoy an enhanced theatre experience at the venue. In partnership with Kickstart Disability Arts & Culture, Surrey Arts Centre will offer VocalEye audio description. VocalEye provides live vocal description of theatre and the performing arts. If yes, we can help you!

Mother’s Ryan Guldemond helping out. “We also have Shawn ‘Danger’ Penner, engineer extraordinaire, on board as well,” Maria told me. “It’ s going really fast and seriously fun. It’s great to hang out with these guys and come up with super crazy ideas.” They had three days at Mushroom studios with a band — “all my favourite people locked up in Christina Maria one place,” she said. “They are all amazing players and people. In their breaks they watched Terminator 1 AND 2 — the perfect movies to fuel the new album.” The album will be finished by the end of February, and out sometime in the second half of next year. She added: “I’m also changing my name to Rykka on Dec. 30.”

The night before that (tonight, Dec. 29), the musically-gifted woman, born Christina Maria Rieder, opens for Mother Mother at the Commodore.

PAUL RODGERS HELPS HORSES

Part-time South Surrey resident Paul Rodgers (of Bad Company fame) has released a new studio recording available online via CD Baby and other digital retailers.“With Our Love” was released on Rodgers’ recent 62nd birthday, with all proceeds earmarked for the charities The Racehorse Sanctuary & Rocking Horse Children’s Charity and Seraphim 12 Foundation. “Horses are such a powerful part of human development and have been since the early ages,” Rodgers noted in a press statement. “We humans owe them so much. My wife Cynthia and I have visited both sanctuaries and can’t imagine any of these healthy vibrant beings being sent off to die. Especially Seraphim 12’s ‘Daisy,’ who was to be slaughtered for human consumption at four months of age!”

ig congrats to John Armstrong, the gifted writer and former White Rocker whose great Guilty of Everything autobiography is being made into a movie. The Rebel Kind will have Montreal actor Jay Baruchel playing Armstrong, aka Buck Cherry. After his Modernettes folded in the mid-1980s, the acerbic and witty Armstrong spent 14 years as a reporter at the Vancouver Sun — a job written about, without the paper being named, in his entertaining Wages book, from 2007. Armstrong also freely admits to writing Guilty of Everything on Sun company time. Armstrong is pleased Baruchel has signed on for The Rebel Kind, to be filmed by Ladner-raised director Reg Harkema starting next fall. “He (Baruchel) has got big eyebrows,” Armstrong, 55, told the Sun this month. “(Though) even at my most junked out and despicable, I was never as skinny as Jay is; he’s made out of pipe cleaners. But he’s a really cool actor, and a really cool guy.” Armstrong lives in Chilliwack now; his Guilty of Everything sheds light on his post-Princess Margaret Secondary days of learning guitar chords from Art Bergmann at their shared pad on White Rock’s Marine Drive, shoplifting for cans of soup, debuting a band at White Rock Sea Festival and, after moving to Vancouver, gigging and causing hell with the Modernettes.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Your power, energy, effectiveness, timing and charm are at a peak Sunday/ Monday – go after what you want! A three-day run of monetary fortune comes Monday afternoon through Wednesday. Seek every money pathway except partnership. Siblings, friends, travel, errands and communications fill Thursday to Saturday noon. Take care with tools, speech and driving Friday night. Start a restful, “down home” weekend Saturday afternoon. This entire week lends itself to your ambition. It’s a good time to push forward, meet power players, propose projects to the boss and display your talents. Taurus April 20-May 20: This is an easy, mellow, wise week. Think profound thoughts, express yourself to a loved one, contact far-flung people, start any sort of study, intellectual, cultural or publishing venture. Rest, plan and contemplate Sunday to noon Monday. Your energy, effectiveness, charisma and clout surge Monday eve through Wednesday – start important projects, see and be seen. Someone is likely romantically interested in you – respond. Chase money and make purchases Thursday to Saturday noon. This last day begins a very busy weekend. Bosses, parents favour you all week – deserve it! Gemini May 21-June 20: Sex and money are your main themes during this easy but intriguing week. Secrets, hidden profit angles, private revelations abound. Optimism, friends and flirtations arrive Sunday. But retreat noon Monday through Wednesday – contemplate, plan, be restful, meditate, and deal with governments and institutions. Be charitable, spiritual. Your energy and charm return Thursday to noon Saturday – somewhat. You can get what you want, within limits, and relationships flow well – as long as you pursue financial, intimate, health or lifestyle goals, success should occur. Avoid shops Saturday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Relationships fill this easy, productive week. Opportunities and challenges, agreements and refusals are slated, but the world definitely tilts toward the beneficial ones. Be ambitious Sunday and the first half of Monday – you can accomplish much. (Better Sunday.) Your popularity, optimism and happiness rise Monday noon through Wednesday. You might meet someone in a group who challenges you, yet stirs your attraction sensors. Love isn’t out of the question! But retreat, rest and contemplate what’s going on Thursday to Saturday noon – later, your energy and charisma return. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: A mountain of chores faces you – might as well plunge in and get them done. Nothing else of much value will arise this week, and any work you do during this career-blessed year (and this easy, smooth week) will surely rebound to your credit and profit. Gentle wisdom, mellow love invade your consciousness Sunday to noon Monday. Be ambitious Monday afternoon through Wednesday, especially Tuesday. Your happiness rises Thursday to Saturday morning, as some social delights, a bit of popularity and a buoyant mood relieve some of the work drudgery. Retreat, rest later Saturday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: It’s the first easy, smooth week of an easy, smooth year. The accent lies on romance, creativity, pleasure, beauty and charming kids. You’re ready to take a risk, and it should pay off. Sunday to noon Monday is sexy, and financial opportunities stand out. (The only barrier to success is your lack of sufficient income. That will change after October next year.) Gentle love and mental expansion float in Monday afternoon through Wednesday. Far travel, education and publishing extend a cosmic invitation. Be ambitious Thursday to Saturday morn. Later, joy, hope and friends!

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The main accent lies on home, domestic concerns, land, realty, security, retirement, soul, stomach, gardening, farming. All is well during this easy, good week. Do three things: get some deep rest, improve your security situation (or that of your kids) and change your lifestyle. Relationships demand attention Sunday and early Monday. Sexy attractions (and financial ones) arise Monday afternoon through Wednesday. Leap on any opportunities during these days. Your mellow, wise side takes over Thursday to Saturday noon – love, but not permanent love, Friday. Be ambitious Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: This isn’t an important month, so you can act without stress or worry. You’ll be busy – errands, chats, siblings, casual friends, paperwork, details and daily business keep you moving. But the stakes are not high. You’re in a great partnership year (to next June) in both love and business. Use this week and next to persuade and discuss, to bring another closer by communicating. Tackle chores Sunday to Monday noon. Relationships, exciting meetings, opposition and co-operation, these fill Monday afternoon through Wednesday – luckily! Depths rise Thursday-Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Chase money during this pleasant week. Buy and sell, seek new clients, ask for a raise – and shop. (Don’t shop for visuals Wednesday – e.g., DVDs – and don’t buy high-tech Saturday.) You might begin a sensual relationship – not an important one. Romance, creativity and “lucky risks” fill Sunday and the first half of Monday. Work – this year’s growing monster – expands yet further Monday p.m. through Wednesday. It’s good work, with good rewards, so plunge in. Relationships, exciting meetings, opportunities, new horizons and possible refusals, fill Thursday to Saturday noon.

Jan. 1 - 7, 2011 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: You’re in charge during this easy, productive week. Start important projects, see and be seen, ask for favours, give instructions. Home, family, security and Mother Nature are big Sunday/Monday. Your thoughts turn to love and romance Monday afternoon through Wednesday. Or, if you have enough love, to creative, speculative, and pleasure projects. Either way, luck enters just when you need it. Tackle chores Thursday to Saturday noon – you’ll get a lot done. This is a good small period for health cures, also. An exciting meeting could occur Saturday – be semi-wary, stress endures. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Retreat, rest and contemplate for the three weeks ahead. Fulfill neglected obligations, liaison with head office, government or institutions. Be charitable and spiritual. Plan your future actions. This is an easy, restful week. Short trips, errands and casual conversations fill Sunday to Monday noon. Sink into your home and family Monday afternoon through Wednesday. Monday/Tuesday is a splendid interval to buy a home. Romantic notions, pleasure and speculative success visit Thursday to Saturday noon. However, this isn’t the best time to start a love affair. Saturday, light chores. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Wishes can come true this week – but fulfillment will tend to be of the same nature as the week: calm, easy, smooth.Your popularity, optimism and social joys rise, although you’ll still prefer a few moments alone. Chase money or spend it Sunday, but put a cautious hand on the wallet Monday. Errands, calls, visits, casual conversations, all pop up Monday afternoon through Wednesday – take care of paperwork, reports, application forms and taxes. Head home or sink into your foundations Thursday to Saturday morning. Shore up security, contemplate old age – where are you going? timstephens@shaw.ca

Do your car’s tires match your lifestyle?

• Rural Driving: If you live in a rural area you know how tricky winter driving can be. Roads are often not salted and ploughed less frequently, while sudden heavy snow falls and flash freezes can turn your drive into a treacherous one. For rural drivers, aggressive studded snow tires are ideal for conquering the rough, frozen terrain. Keep in mind to check your local bylaws, as studded tires are illegal in some urban areas. • Commuter Driving: While highways are salted and ploughed regularly, you still need a winter tire that can deal with adverse conditions. Don’t be fooled by the promise of all-season tires. Studies have shown that at -14C all-season tires lose up to 60 per cent of their grip. As a commuter, winter tires are recommended. The high performance Hankook

• Urban Driving: For those living in cities, where space comes at a premium, drivers often do not have room to store a second set of winter tires. Thanks to a new category of tires, “the all-weather,” drivers no longer need to sacrifice safety for convenience and space. All-weather tires feature next generation technology that do what traditional all-season tires were meant to do: provide great traction year round while maintaining manoeuvrability and speed. Thanks to recent improvements in rubber compounds, all-weather tires provide improved traction on snow and ice, with minimal loss in year round performance and wear. A popular all-weather tire is the Hankook Optimo 4S. The Optimo 4S is marked with the mountain snowflake symbol for meeting and exceeding severe snow service requirements and qualifies as a winter tire in Quebec and New Brunswick, where the use of these tires is mandatory.

Driving

Our roads and highways are legendary for their degrees of difficulty during the colder months. “When winter hits, where you live and drive will have a big impact on the road conditions you face,” explains Bill Hume, vice-president of Hankook Tire Canada. “Canada is blessed with so many diverse landscapes, and while Canadians know they need a vehicle to suit their lifestyle, few know they need a tire that matches it as well.” When considering the right winter tire, you should take into consideration which of these categories best describes you and your family’s lifestyle:
