Iconic city shoe store closing its doors

It’s the end of an era as a New Westminster business landmark prepares to close its doors. After a century in business on Columbia Street, Copp’s Shoes is aiming to close at the end of the year. Copp’s New West Shoes is among the oldest shoe stores in Canada. “We are probably the oldest shoe store in British Columbia,” said owner Terry Brine. “No doubt about that.” Brine’s decision to retire and close Copp’s Shoes has given him some sleepless nights. “It’s been 87 years in the family,” he said. “It’s not easy to be the one to pull the plug. You have to do what is right for you.” Brine said he’s very appreciative of all of his customers, particularly those from New Westminster who have supported the store and the Copps-Brine family for generations. Popular Shoes opened at 638 Columbia St. in 1912. In 1925, Percy Copp, Brine’s maternal grandfather, purchased the store and renamed it Copp’s Shoes. In subsequent years his son Ralph Brine (who retired in 1975), and then Ralph’s son Terry would oversee the shop. Although Brine planned to teach physical education when he graduated from university, the idea of working in retail and an

Anti-bullying education for students and parents always on the ‘radar screen’ in city BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER

Even before the suspected suicide of Amanda Todd, a Port Coquitlam teen relentlessly tormented at school, students

at New Westminster Secondary School had started writing an anti-bullying play they perform each year. Students at the high school write and star in a performance for Rock Solid, a program that aims to raise awareness of the problems around bullying and helping students deal with it. The play tackles touchy topics around bullying, including racism, sexism and the responsibility that bystanders have to interject when they see someone being bullied.

It is “too emotional” and raw to focus on yet, he said. Amanda documented her story in a YouTube video about a month before she committed suicide. In the video she holds up cards that tell the story of her years of being preyed upon. Asked whether New Westminster’s high school is doing enough to educate and support students in regards to bullying, Mackay said, “We certainly try. I don’t

The Rock Solid program was launched at the high school in 2003 – a combined effort between police and the school. The idea launched after the tragic death of another teenage girl – Reena Virk, who was senselessly tormented and murdered by her teenage classmates. “Every kid in Rock Solid is told the history of it,” said drama teacher Colin Mackay. This year’s Rock Solid production likely wouldn’t be about Amanda, Mackay said.

What’s in a name?

City council will look at potential sponsorship on civic centre which could include a commercial name BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER

The City of New Westminster may explore whether it can generate revenue for the civic centre through sponsorship opportunities such as naming rights for the future facility. The city believes there may be an opportunity to seek corporate sponsorship to generate revenue and to help offset the costs of the facility that’s now under construction on Columbia Street. Sponsorship could involve naming rights to the facility and/or sponsorship of interior spaces within the multi-use civic facility, a staff report said. “I am open to looking at it,” said Mayor Wayne Wright said about his view on sponsorship of city facilities. “If it is tastefully done, it is something that could work for the city. Remember, it is a convention facility as well.” Staff is seeking direction from council regarding the pursuit of corporation sponsorship opportunities associated with the multiuse civic facility and/or other city facilities. If Mayor Wayne council wants to proWright ceed with sponsorship ‘You only have program for city facilities, staff will develop a to go as far as Vancouver to see sponsorship policy for council’s consideration. Rogers’ arena’ Although council was set to discuss the matter at its Oct. 15 committee-of-the-whole meeting, it referred the report to a future council meeting. Wright said the city has been working hard to come up with the right name for the multiuse civic facility. He noted that if the city pursues sponsorship for the building, this could be part of the facility’s name. “It’s a new way of municipalities being able to get into the revenue source,” he said about naming rights. “You only have to go as far as Vancouver to see Rogers Arena.” Given that the topic is likely to generate quite a discussion, Wright said council decided to delay consideration of the staff report so there was ample time for council members to voice their thoughts on the direction being considered.

Mayor: ‘We had some preliminary discussions (on sponsorship naming rights)’ “We had some preliminary discussions,” he said. “There are certainly two different thoughts. We need to sit down collectively and take the time to discuss it.” Wright said some people who are interested in coming into the building are curious about the city’s decision about naming rights. In addition to the civic centre, the city is building an office tower above the city facility. The total budget for the project is $94 million, which includes $41.5 million for the civic centre, $12.5 million for the parking structure (to be used by the office tower and the civic facility), and $40 million for the office tower. The city will use $43 million in casino money known as “development assistance compensation” for the project. The civic centre will include a 350-seat theatre, conference and meeting space, art studios, an art gallery, tourist information centre, the city’s museum and the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The staff report states that sponsorship opportunities may exist for other city facilities, but the civic centre presents an immediate and unique opportunity as it is a new facility, has commerce components (conference space, a gift shop, retail space) and has an office tower attached that could attract potential

New Westminster to ban sale of cats and dogs Retail stores in the city will no longer be able to sell a variety of pets BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER

Royal City residents looking to add a Fido or Fifi to the family may have to venture elsewhere. A majority of New Westminster city council supports amendments to the city’s pet store bylaw that would ban the sale of cats and dogs in retail stores. A staff report states that the bylaw changes are intended to help address regional concerns about the growing number of dogs and cats in shelters and animals being raised by unqualified breeders. Currently rabbits, hares and pikas are prohibited from being sold in pet stores in New Westminster. Once the bylaw is amended, cats and dogs would be added to the list of animals than can’t be sold in New Westminster.

Kathy Powelson, founder of the Paws for Hope Animal Foundation, appeared before city council in September to ask the city to amend its pet store bylaw to prohibit the sale of cats and dogs in retail stores, which would stop the needless suffering of these animals as many live in horrible conditions. Cheryl Rogers, president of the Pacific Volunteer Education and Assistance Team for Animals Society, subsequently appeared before council to ask the city to ban the sale of animals in pet stores, stating that most animals in pet stores come from poor conditions. Rogers appeared before city council Monday night and urged the city to ban the sale of all animals in pet stores, rather than doing so on a species specific basis. Coun. Lorrie Williams said the bylaw can be amended in the future if it’s deemed necessary. Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said he has some difficulty banning sales of dogs and cats in pet stores as its part of our culture.

Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said he believes the city has to “think carefully” about banning things that are legal. He said he’d like more evidence that dogs sold in pet stores come from puppy mills, where they live in poor conditions. In a five-to-two vote, council approved three readings of amendments to the animal control bylaw. The city will notify the public about the bylaw amendment and invite residents to submit written comments within two weeks. The comments will be given to council before it gives final adoption to the bylaw. A staff report stated that two of the three pet stores located in New Westminster do not sell any live animals. A third acts as an agent to adopt out rescued and abandoned cats. According to staff, the amendments would prohibit the sale of cat and dogs in retail stores, with the exception of stores acting as an agent for recognized animal rescue societies or shelter organizations, such as the SPCA or the New Westminster Animal Shelter.

Political train wreck nothing new in B.C. IN THE HOUSE

ar from being an unusual event, the ongoing train wreck that has engulfed the B.C. Conservative Party and its leader John Cummins is actually pretty standard fare in B.C. politics. For sure, the BCCP seems particularly inept and buffoonish with its antics, but when it comes to a party trying to take out its leader, British Columbians have seen that movie many times before. Some recent history is in order here. Let us review! We start in 1986, when a few members of the NDP caucus attempted a palace coup against party leader Bob Skelly, who looked weak, bland and unwinnable against the new and charismatic Social Credit premier, Bill Vander Zalm. The coup was not successful, and Skelly and the NDP predictably lost the election that year (although Skelly did a lot better than was expected in terms of the popular vote). Nevertheless, Skelly knew the knives were about to be unsheathed and stepped aside in favor of ex-Vancouver mayor Mike Harcourt.

Let’s not forget about Vander Zalm, of course. He beat Skelly, but quickly became his own worst enemy. Overseeing the most scandal-plagued government in B.C. history didn’t help either, and he was forced to resign after being found in a conflict-of-interest over his Fantasy Gardens real estate holdings. But even if that conflict problem did not exist, Vander Zalm would likely have been driven from office, as he was under siege by members of his own caucus and a number of Social Credit party officials. Next up: Harcourt. He won the 1991 election, but the good times didn’t last long. The socalled “Bingogate” scandal engulfed his administration and when no one in his party was willing to be accountable for it, Harcourt fell on his sword (a sword neatly sharpened by members of his own caucus, by the way). Let’s not forget the guy Harcourt beat in the 1991 election: B.C. Liberal leader Gordon Wilson. Just before that election, Wilson fought off an internal revolt over his leadership. He emerged as the Opposition party leader after the election but found himself presiding over a caucus that he had no history with and little in common with. Predictably, he found himself in trouble with his own crew after he become romantically entangled with caucus member Judi Tyabji, whom he had

Please consider the naming of one of our new schools to be “The Amanda Todd Elementary” or “The Amanda Todd Middle School.” New Westminster School District is asking for ideas from the community on naming two new schools in the city. With the recent and tragic suicide death of Amanda Todd and the sadness that this has brought to many students and parents alike may we suggest naming one of the schools after a young girl who was such a bright light that burnt out at such ◗History Page 7 a young age.

My daughter saw the video clip of Amanda Todd’s sad story in her creative writing class and was moved to tears and emotion yesterday. My daughter is involved in Rock Solid, and the timing of this suicide, while being involved in the upcoming presentation on anti-bullying, has left a strong impact on her and her fellow students in the community. For many years we have named schools after pioneers in the city; may I suggest that naming one of the schools after such a young life that was lost to bullying be considered for us all to remember and perhaps change and prevent this type of loss of such a young girl with a future that ended at such a young age. Perhaps we can prevent and send a message that will last for years to come. Thank you. Gloria Woodward Ellard, New Westminster

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sapperton residents warns of changes to the city

Dear Editor:

All of New Westminster, not just Sapperton residents, should be paying close attention in the coming weeks. The year’s long fight to keep our residential neighbourhood intact is coming up to the rezoning process. The city council gets to decide whether to preserve Lower Sapperton or to begin the erosion of single family dwellings by replacing them with commercial and/or institutional buildings. The neighbourhood affected has spoken loud and clear with letters to the council, speeches at council meetings, petitions, signage and the biggest public outcry the city has ever seen. A community poll showed that the vast majority of residents are against the expansion of business into our neighbourhood, with only a handful of houses undecided or supporting the plans for the official community plan (OCP) change. None of this caused council to bat an eye. The official community plan change went through as if we hadn’t said a word. They have a chance to stop this atrocity by not changing the zoning of the properties in question. Since the official community plan

change, the proposed project has been downsized, omitting the daycare that was so loved by the city staff because it would bring jobs and childcare. Now it is just an office building and some affordable housing. Housing which could have been built on the property under the original OCP because it is a residential use. If the zoning is changed to allow an office building into a strictly residential neighbourhood, after years of protesting by the residents of that neighbourhood, then it is a very obvious statement by city council that they are not interested in the current residents of their city. They have future plans that don’t include us, so our opinions are not important. This is in Sapperton, but next year it could be in Queensborough or Moody Park. If you bought in New West because you love your quaint residential neighbourhood that is conveniently close to all the amenities, maybe you will like it more if the amenities move in right next door. You can wave to all your new neighbours as they look down on you in your backyard from their offices three storeys above you, how lovely. If the residents of New West have no say in the official community plan, then who is the community that this plan refers to? Julie Gaudet, New Westminster

History: Politics no smooth road in B.C. ◗ continued from page 6

appointed house leader over the objections of some members of his caucus. The result, of course, saw the caucus force Wilson to step down and hold a leadership election, a bitter battle that he lost to Gordon Campbell. Meanwhile, the fellow who replaced Harcourt also eventually found himself in trouble with his own people. Glen Clark won the 1996 election for the NDP, but internal dissension started to build over his leadership even before the RCMP raided his house in 1998 as part of the so-called “casinogate” scandal. He eventually resigned, of course, setting the stage for Ujjal Dosanjh to become party leader. He oversaw the party for a rocky two years, as about half the party never warmed up to his leader-

ship. Campbell, of course, won three elections but then time (and the HST debacle) caught up to him. He quit amid mounting internal pressure from caucus MLAs on him to step down. Back to the NDP. Out of the blue, a dozen or so caucus members suddenly demanded that Carole James quit as leader. She did just that, albeit reluctantly. By my count, that’s seven premiers or opposition leaders who had to deal with serious rebellions over their leadership. All eventually lost their jobs. So what Cummins and his party are going through right now fits neatly into the ongoing narrative that is B.C. politics. And after next spring’s election, you can be sure that the loser among Christy Clark or (perhaps

less so) Adrian Dix are going to find themselves smack in the middle of a crisis over their leadership. Cummins left the relatively stable atmosphere of federal politics in Ottawa for the more chaotic rumbles of B.C. politics. He insists he’s going to stick around to fight the next election, no matter what the increasingly loud faction of dissidents in his own party have to say about it. But he might want to review our province’s recent political history. He’ll find he’s not in a unique position, but he’ll also discover leaders seldom last long in this province when their own people start to savage them. Rock Solid is one of a number of antibullying initiatives the district currently offers. The high school has other antibullying plans in place for fall – also planned before the Amanda Todd tragedy. There is an anti-bullying seminar on Oct. 23 for grades 8, 9 and 10 students with Jesse Miller, a speaker on bullying and anti-bully measures for schools, said Janet Grant, the district’s director of instruction and student services. The district has also tackled the topic in the Parents’ Night Out series over the past few years. The series is a collaboration between schools, the New Westminster Police Department, the New Westminster Teachers’ Union, Fraserside Community Services and the United Way. The next session is Wednesday, Oct. 17 (tonight) at 7 p.m. at Lord Kelvin elementary (free child-minding provided). Copp’s: Still ringing in the sales on a vintage 1912 cash register ◗ continued from page 1

the river as far as retail,” Brine said. “It was pre-Guildford. It was destination shopping.” The nature of service offered in shoe stores has also changed through the decades. In past eras, people would come into a shop, sit down, have their feet measured, tell the salesperson the type of shoe they wanted, and try on shoes selected by the salesperson that met that description. “Now it is so much price oriented,” Brine said. “They are so used to shopping at Costco and Wal-Mart. It’s about price. Service is something lost.” While self-service shoe stores may do a brisk business, Copp’s Shoes has continued to focus on personalized customer service. “Malls have always been cookie cutter,” Brine said, noting some have different names but the same ownership. “We have been able to survive by finding niches.” Copp’s New West Shoes has specialized in carrying products

that aren’t easily available in other locations, including wider widths and men’s shoes in sizes 15, 16 and 17. “They are great customers,” he said of people with larger-thanaverage feet. “They don’t buy one or two – they buy three or four or five.” Western boots and work boots, as well as “comfort shoes” have historically been big sellers at Copp’s. The shop has also carried shoes that work well with orthodics, so staff has seen a variety of feet during their time. “Oh boy – there are lots of different feet out there,” Brine smiled. Copp’s currently has three employees, a few less than it had on staff during the heyday of Columbia Street. “Back to school time, every chair would be full,” Brine said. “People would be lined up to get in. It was unbelievable.” Employees of Copp’s New West Shoes are trained in fitting, as well as construction of shoes.

“We have had some great employees over the years,” Brine noted. “We were very fortunate. That’s what makes your business – dedicated employees. It makes your life much easier.” While some businesses may move locations, Copp’s Shoes has always called the space at 638 Columbia St. home. The interior has gone relatively unchanged through the years. “It hasn’t been changed since Day 1,” Brine said. “There really hasn’t been a lot done. We kept it intentionally.” Both sides of the store are adorned with counters topped by shelves filled with walls of shoes. Sliding ladders have allowed generations of employees to climb up and retrieve shoes stacked up to the top of the 18-foot ceilings. “If you are afraid of heights, it wasn’t a good thing,” Brine laughed. “We used to have shoes right to the top.” Despite modern technology, Copp’s Shoes has continued to ring up sales on the shop’s origi-

nal cash register. “Our cash register is vintage 1911/1912,” he said. “It has been here since Day 1. It still works. I use it everyday. I haven’t had a repairman look at that – of course no one would know how to fix it anymore.” With a decision made to close shop on Dec. 31 (or when the merchandise is gone), Brine ensured his three-year-old grandson got a chance to check out the sliding ladders during a recent visit to the store. “He loved it,” he smiled. “He went right to the top. He’s a daredevil.” Through the years, Copp’s Shoes has seen generations of families support the business and buy their shoes at the independent shoe store. Brine feels blessed that so many people have supported small business in New Westminster. “We have a great following,” Brine said. “I feel so lucky.” Copp’s Shoes’ longstanding relationship with customers has

made the decision to close particularly difficult. Having lost a brother to cancer and watching other family members battle illness has brought home the need to retire and enjoy life for Brine. “A number of things have happened,” he said. “You realize life is short. You have to make the best of it.” After 42-odd years of fulltime work, the New Westminster native is looking forward to travelling, enjoying other interests and spending some time with his grandchildren. Brine, who co-owns the LewisBrine block with fellow downtown businessman Bill Lewis, will continue to be involved in the property. Brine notes that his decision to retire and close shop comes at a time when the downtown is being reborn. “I see a bright future. I wish I was 15 years younger.” ◆ For more photos of Copp’s shoes, go to

Updates for old bylaws

now required at grade in certain zoning districts such as 12th and East Columbia streets), and allowing new childcare facilities to be established in existing multiple dwelling spaces. John Stark, the city’s senior social planner, said the feasibility of operating childcare centres in multifamily buildings is limited by zoning regulations. Under the proposed changes, he said that underutilized amenity spaces would be allowed to be used for childcare uses if agreed to by the majority of strata owners. Coun. Jaimie McEvoy said the city’s regulations make child care more difficult than other uses. “Our goal ought to be it shouldn’t be harder to have child care than a cheque cashing centre.” Staff expect to be completing the new draft zoning bylaw soon and will present it to council once it has been reviewed by legal counsel. It would then go through a council review and public consultation process.

New Westminster is seeking to modernize its 70-year-old zoning bylaw. A recent report to council stated that staff and the city solicitor have had discussions about the benefits of creating a new zoning bylaw for New Westminster, as the city’s bylaw hasn’t undergone a comprehensive review since it was adopted in 1940. Staff note that the current bylaw has been amended by “a variety of authors hundreds of times” through the years, which has resulted in a document that is “quite complex, lengthy and internally consistent.” Staff has been working on a new zoning bylaw, but informed council of a few policy issues that could be incorporated into the zoning bylaw. These include reducing parking near SkyTrain stations (a report is being compiled on this matter), allowing residential at grade in some areas (commercial is

Shift workers needed for study ◗P12 New West Doc Fest this weekend ◗P14

Centre offers futuristic freezing sessions BY MARELLE REID REPORTER

It looks like something out of an episode of Star Trek. The six-foot metal cylinder in the middle of the room with what looks like liquid nitrogen spilling out the top is an intimidating machine but promises the latest in healing technology. Inside, wearing nothing but thick white sport socks, the patient closes a curved door and suddenly it’s dark. Then the floor rises, bringing the patient’s head up through the top, and the machine starts to pump nitrogen gas into the chamber; cool at first, then colder until goose bumps form, then teeth start chattering, and then it’s an unbelievable -134 C inside the tiny space. Before the reality of this intense experience can be truly absorbed, three minutes has passed and it’s over. Stepping back into the room brings a flush of warmth back into limbs and muscles, and a feeling of relief takes over as clothes are pulled back over tingling skin. Any previous pain seems to be on mute. It’s easier to handle than a cold shower and the benefits, according to proponents, are much greater. It’s called cryotherapy, from the Greek word for “ice cold,” and it’s now available at Qore Health Centre and Spa in New Westminster. The centre opened earlier this year to cater to athletes and those with pain and challenging health conditions. Owner Rejeanne Bischoff, along with her two business partners, has found the treatments are popular, especially for those with chronic pain or inflammation. “A lot of the studies that come out of Europe say that it’s really good for fibromyalgia and arthritis,” said Bischoff. Cryotherapy is new in Canada, and, according to Bischoff, Qore is only one of two places in the country with a “cryosauna,” or “space cabin,” as the device is known. Started in Japan in the late 1970s, whole body cryotherapy was later made into what it is today by scientists in Eastern Europe. The Qore cryosauna was manufactured in Germany. Though it can produce a similar feeling of invigoration as after an ice bath, cryotherapy is supposed to work differently. With an ice bath, or “cold therapy,” the brain sends continuous warning signals to the body to try to warm up. With cryotherapy, on the other hand, which exposes skin to temperatures below -110 C, the brain sends a danger signal to put the body’s reflexes on high alert. Blood flow is restricted to the core to preserve vital organs, and adrenaline and endorphins are released, stimulating the endocrine, immune and central nervous systems.

Larry Wright/THE RECORD

Ice cold: Rejeanne Bischoff, owner of Qore Health Centre and Spa in New Westminster, demonstrates the cryotherapy machine that aims to boost immunity and promote healing. “It’s all about your own body doing its own thing,” said Bischoff, noting pain relief can be acquired without the need for medication. Since opening the business, she herself has discovered the benefits of cryotherapy for chronic pain. Bischoff had back pain since she was 10, and used to have trouble sleeping through the night. After four or five sessions in the cryosauna, she said the pain diminished and she was moving more easily throughout the day. “One day I was getting out of a chair and noticed, ‘Hey, I’m moving,’” she said. One client, who has found relief recently, bought a one-year package for regular treatments. Not everyone feels significantly different right away, though. Sometimes patients feel tired after their first treatment, while some feel energized, and still others feel not much of anything. It all depends on their symptoms and their own physiology. Bischoff said it is important to allow for a few treatments before expecting any significant difference. “It’s like vegetables,” she said. “You

don’t just eat them once and think you’re going to be healthy for life. It just doesn’t work that way. The cryotherapy actually builds on itself.” For arthritis, Bischoff said the most effective course of treatment would be daily cryotherapy for at least two to four weeks. Though generally considered a safe treatment, Bischoff said cryotherapy is not recommended for some people, particularly those with heart conditions, high blood pressure, infections or pregnant women. Angela How, a rheumatologist in Burnaby, said she had not heard of whole body cryotherapy. Though she does prescribe cold therapy for her arthritis patients, How said she only recommends targeted cold treatment, rather than whole body treatment. Being such a new therapy, she said she would not discount it, but would like to see proof that it works. “I think that these para-medical sort of claims are often unsubstantiated,” she said. “So what I would be interested in is whether there’s any scientific proof that (reduction of inflammation) is exactly what happens. The claims that it affects inflammation and your immune system

and all of that, I think that anybody can make claims like that.” Despite few scientific studies on whole body cryotherapy, and no regulation by agencies in either North America or Europe, the treatment is gaining a strong following on both continents, especially with amateur and elite athletes, according to an article in the New York Times last year. For New Westminster resident Sandra Delaney, who has been in twice for cryotherapy to treat joint and lower back pain, she believes the treatment has already been effective. “I found that my sensitive spots were definitely less sore and I felt like I had more mobility,” she said, noting she plans to bring a friend with her next time who suffers from severe rheumatoid arthritis. “I want her to come in and do the series of 10 and then maybe 20 (treatments) just to see if there is maybe a holistic way of helping her get relief from her RA without having to stay on medication.” Besides relief from inflammation and chronic pain, cryotherapy has been shown to also improve mood, skin tone, and even induce weight loss, according to the Qore website.

Are you a woman who works shifts? You may be eligible to participate in a program that could improve your quality of life and help reduce the risk of breast cancer. The Cancer Prevention Centre at the University of British Columbia is looking for female shift workers for a new study. Research has shown that women who are exposed to light at night are at increased risk for breast cancer, according to the centre. The study will take place over a one-year period and will include an assessment at the beginning, middle and end of the year. Eligible participants are women between the age of 40 and 65 who work rotating shifts or permanent nights at least three times per month for at least the past two years, who have had a mammogram within the past three years (or are willing to get one), and who are currently living or working in the greater Vancouver area. For their time, each participant will receive an honorarium for each assessment. To register, or for more

MISSION Our mission is to provide women with a safe, healthy and caring environment in which to experience recovery.

oyal City resident Ray Porcellato will be appearing on the small screen this month. Porcellato, founder of Cloud 9 specialty bakery, will be a guest judge on Anna and Kristina’s Grocery Bag for an episode on gluten-free cooking. The episode is scheduled to air on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. “If you look at the list of celebrity judges, it is like some of the top chefs in the world – and me,” he laughed. “It’s hilarious.” While he may not be a world-renowned chef, Porcellato has become familiar with gluten-free products, which is the focus of the episode. “It was great,” he said. “It’s on the Oprah network. It is seen by 25 million people.” Filmed a couple of months ago, the episode includes footage of Porcellato reviewing a few recipes cooked up by the hosts. The episode also features a visit to the New Westminster bakery. Not missing out on an

The New Westminster Hyacks fumbled their way into the B.C. high school AAA football basement with a 32-6 loss to the Notre Dame Jugglers last Friday. The Jugglers, unlucky back-toback losers to West Vancouver and Terry Fox in recent weeks, registered their first win of the season to move into second place in the Western conference. Midget Giants declaw Cougars BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR

The Northwest Giants remained the sole undefeated team in the B.C. major midget hockey league with a pair of one-goal wins over rival Cariboo Cougars. The Burnaby-based Giants edged the Prince George club 4-3 on Saturday during a weekend showcase at the Langley Events Centre. The Giants then moved its unbeaten record to six games without a loss with a 6-5 decision on the following Sunday. Jackson Cressey scored the game-winning goal Saturday. The Giants never trailed in the contest, taking a first-period lead on Major Kaila’s first goal of the season. They led 3-2 heading into the final frame following a goal by Anthony Conti. On Sunday, defenceman Trevor MacLean tallied the winner on a set power play in the final minute of the third period, counting his first two markers of the year. “Our main focus is to stay disciplined and develop every time we step on the ice,” said first-year Giants’ head coach Clint Thornton. The Cougars led for most of Sunday game, but MacLean’s first of the year from Kaila and New Westminster’s Brandon Del Grosso knotted the match-

up 5-5 late in a five-goal middle period. Cressey also counted a pair, bringing his season goal total to five. Cole Todd had his best outing of the young season with the Giants, assisting on three of Northwest‘s counters. The Giants trailed 4-2 early in the middle period, but Eric Margo and Cressey tallied less than two minutes apart midway through the frame to tie the game at fours. “The good news is these kids are learning how to win,” Thornton said, adding the play of 15-year-old goalie Bo Didur, who has played in five of the team’s first six games including a pair of wins over both Greater Vancouver and Prince George. The Okanagan Rockets continue to hold down top spot in the 11-team provincial loop with a 6-1-1 record despite a weekend split against the fourthplace Valley West Hawks in Langley. The Cougars fell to 62-0. The Giants will face the very same Hawks in a home-and-away matchup this weekend. The Giants host Valley West at the Burnaby Winter Club on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. The return matchup is at the Fleetweed Arena in Surrey on Sunday at 2:45 p.m.

Better days: United Rugby Club, in dark, took on Capilano in a recent women’s rugby match during a drier spell of weather in the Lower Mainland.

Clan women win open Captain Lindsey Butterworth led the Simon Fraser University women’s cross-country team to the aggregate title at the Emerald City Open in Seattle on Saturday. Butterworth finished fourth in a time of 22.35.3 on a rainy six-kilometre course, while the Clan team placed six more runners in the top 20 of the 83competitor field. SFU alum Jessica Smith, representing the Valley Royals, finished third overall. Freshman Peggy Noel and Kansas McKenzie finished behind Butterworth in under 23 minutes, placing seventh and ninth, respectively. Kirsten Allen placed just outside

the top 10 in a time of 23:04.6 to place 11th. Michaela Kane rounded out the Clan’s top five runners, placing 15th to give SFU a winning 36 points. Sarah Sawatzky and Emma Chadsey also finished in the top 20, placing 16th and 19th, respectively. New Westminster’s Gabrielle Napolenone also competed for the Clan. Timo Hoberg had the best finish for the SFU men’s team, placing 15th to help the squad place fourth overall. Austin Trapp and Cameron Proceviat of Burnaby broke the tape in 18th and 20th place, respectively.

Simon Fraser University was brought back to earth by conference-leading Central Washington in NCAA Division II football. After two consecutive wins and Bo Palmer’s near Great Northwest conference record outing against Azusa Pacific last week, the Clan was soundly beaten 51-10 by the first-place Wildcats on Saturday. Palmer failed to reach the century mark in rushing, finishing with 99 yards on 11 carries, while SFU quarterback and conference passing leader Trey Wheeler was held to just 14 completions on 37 attempts and 146 total yards with one interception. On the up side, Eric Murphy and New Westminster’s Casey Chin bolstered the SFU defence with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively. But one Central Washington player that proved hard to stop was Demetrius Sumler, who scored five touchdowns and rushed for 226 yards. The Clan’s only score came in the third quarter from Torre Corrado, who gathered in a 45-yard Wheeler pass. SFU is home to 42 Western Oregon on Saturday at 2 p.m. tberridge@royalcityrecord. com

Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
