◗ ROYAL CITY PRIDE SOCIETY
Big boost for pride society Hyack Festival Association offers up parade float for local pride society to use BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER
The Hyack Festival Association is giving New Westminster’s Pride event a huge promotional boost. The association is lending the local Pride Society its float to use in the upcoming Vancouver Pride Parade on Aug. 5 – an event that draws thousands of people to Vancouver’s West End for one of the biggest – and most flamboyant – parades in the Lower Mainland. This is the first year for the Royal City Pride Society. The society runs a much more family-oriented gathering in the park, among other events, for its Pride festivities being held Aug. 16 to 19. It will also have a presence at the popular downtown parade. It is also the first time in 41 years that Hyack has lent out its float, Shelly Reinhart, Royal City Pride Society president, told The Record recently. “It’s maybe the first time in 41 years, but I don’t think we’ve ever been asked, that I know of,” Hyack Festival Association executive director Douglas Smith said with a laugh. The City of New Westminster’s director of legislative services and communications, Rick Page, initiated the move, Smith said. “He called me and proposed that we try to get connected with Royal City Pride Society, you know, what would be the possibility of doing that, and it’s kind of gone from there, and we’re delighted to be able to make it available and showcase the City of New Westminster through the local pride society in an iconic parade like the pride parade in Vancouver,” Smith said.

She also acknowledged the support of the city, which has given the society a $5,000 grant for the first time since the Royal City Pride Society launched in 2010. The society will receive the grant after the Pride event next month. “Just knowing that that money is coming to us makes such a huge difference for us,” she said. ◗Pride Page 4

ET’S EAT OUT YIANNI'S
GREEK TAVERNA In ancient Greek mythology, Mediterranean cuisine was the ambrosia for the gods. It still is. But you don’t have to go to Greece to enjoy a succulent dinner, just to the heart of New Westminster at Yianni’s Greek Taverna. A local favourite, Yianni’s has been part of the city’s go-to eateries for nearly a decade. Four years ago, Paul and Sarbjit Thandi bought Yianni’s. Keeping true to its Cretan roots of cooking, the intimate restaurant still serves up what loyal clientele crave. Sarbjit, who has more than 30 years experience in the hospitality industry, is the executive chef. Along with her Greek sous chef, Chris Manestiotis, the two create mouthwatering cuisine. The key to its success, says Paul, is quality ingredients, consistency and a welcoming atmosphere. The best thing about the Cretan food is its simplicity. No overpowering spices or cooking processes mar the !avour of the fresh, locally gathered produce. Dinner entrees include classics such as moussaka: baked eggplant and potato in meat sauce and topped with béchamel; roast lamb shoulder; souzoukia: spiced meatballs in tomatoes sauce. Also on the menu is a traditional

The bar is fully licensed so you can sip on a Greek beer or any number of other specialty drinks, while enjoying traditional Greek cuisine in an ambience of fun and excellent service. For those who want to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, Paul offers a good selection of wines, at various price points, from around the world and a variety of popular B.C. wines.

99 and counting for local tennis player Ed Gladstone hits the courts weekly in Burnaby and New Westminster BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER email@example.com
Ed Gladstone continues to inspire members of the New Westminster Tennis Club. Gladstone continues to rack up time on tennis courts in New Westminster and Burnaby, even though he’s 99 years of age. Members of the New Westminster Tennis Club gathered at the Tipperary Park club recently to celebrate the milestone. Club president Don Campbell said Gladstone is an inspiration to other members. “Turning 99 in itself is an amazing accomplishment, but still playing tennis regularly makes Ed even more special, and he proves that tennis can indeed be a sport for life,” he said. “Looking at Ed’s long list of achievements and contributions to the sport of tennis in B.C. over his life, we are obviously really honoured to have him as a member of the New Westminster Tennis Club. Ed is really looking forward to next year when he celebrates his 100th on the tennis courts. Stay tuned.” On a recent day, Gladstone played more than three-and-a-half hours in one day, after hitting the courts in Burnaby in the morning and at the New West club in the evening. Gladstone, a Burnaby resident, joined the New Westminster Tennis Club in 1931. Born in England, he started playing tennis when he was seven years old, and continued to play after moving to Canada with his parents in 1917 – including some time playing on a court his father built in their Burnaby backyard. During his life, he’s played some of the greatest players in the world, including Donald Budge, a six-time Grand Slam winner. “I played him – I didn’t beat him,” Gladstone told The Record in 2008. “He showed me a few things. This was in the 1940s, early 1950s. That was a thrill.” The New Westminster Tennis Club named Gladstone an honorary member in 2006 in recognition of his long history of contributions to the sport and his achievements as a player. These include being Tennis B.C.’s Volunteer of the Year in 1988, winning the B.C. Senior Tennis singles title in 1996, and winning 37 medals in men’s singles and doubles, and mixed doubles at the World Senior Games from 1988 to 2002. Reinhart also noted that Mayor Wayne Wright and city councillors have shown up at different Pride events. “For us, that’s a stamp of approval,” she said. “The fact that when we received our grant it was unanimous – that says something.” This year ’s event includes a kick-off performance by the Laff Riot Girls comedy troupe on Thursday, Aug. 16. There is a Stonewallinspired dance on Friday, Aug. 17 at the Heritage Grill. A fundraiser – called Hills and Heels – for the Lookout Society will start at around noon on Saturday, Aug. 18. Participants will meet out front of the Urban Gypsy on Columbia Street, then saunter, walk or sashay up the hill in their runners, boots or heels. Afterward, there’s a family-friendly Pride gathering at Tipperary Park. That same night there is a dance for adults. A brunch on Sunday, Aug. 19 will cap off the weekend. Reinhart said everyone is welcome to attend the events (though minors can’t go to the night-time happenings). “We welcome our straight allies to come out and volunteer with us, to come and join the board,” she said. “The whole goal of all of us who are currently board members, we are seeing the growth of New Westminster, and we are seeing the potential of what can happen in New West, and we just want to be part of that. We want to be there in supporting our city … and supporting our community.” For more information about the Royal City Pride Society, visit www.royalci typridesociety.com.

◗ CITY HALL
Parking issue remains BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER firstname.lastname@example.org
New Westminster city council isn’t prepared to sign off on parking plans for the Victoria Hill site just yet. Council recently received a report about the parking provisions being proposed as part of a proposed rezoning of 296 Francis Way, a site known as Parcel O in the Victoria Hill development. Because of concerns about parking, council tabled a rezoning amendment being sought for the site, where a woodframe building with 100 non-market and 85 market rental units is being proposed. According to a staff report, the city’s parking requirements indicate that 266 spaces would be required with the proposed development, but

confirm the number of parking spaces that can be created through on-street parking. Coun. Betty McIntosh said the city needs to be “very careful” if it plans to start removing trees as it will upset some people, even though the parking situation needs to be addressed. Some trees may need to be removed in order to create new onstreet parking spaces. Coun. Chuck Puchmayr said Victoria Hill already has significant parking issues that must be addressed. He said that approving the parking as proposed would set a bad precedent for parking, noting the site is located in an area that isn’t well-served by transit. “Onni needs to hear loud and clear this is not an acceptable number of parking spaces,” he said. Council directed staff to work with the developer to discuss parking adjacent to parcels O and J at the Victoria Hill site.

IN MY OPINION
Traffic worse than cigarettes Dear Editor:
Re: Whose rights and health deserve protection, editorial, The Record, July 20. Where there’s smoke there’s ire, all right. If these folks want us to even stop smoking in our own yards, pleading that they wish to safeguard their children’s health, perhaps they should investigate how much airborne poison the production of the styrofoam blocks used on our highway infrastructure improvements created. One hundred and fourteen tonnes a year were added to our air by just one company, adding to the existing 108,000 tonnes already being emitted by industry in the Lower Mainland. My family tried to draw attention to this issue (The Province, July 20, 2010, page A14, Money section), and no one seemed to care about air quality.
My family lives next to a major thoroughfare in New West, and more traffic is coming over the bridges on either side of our home every day. We cannot open our child’s bedroom window because of the exhaust fumes and particulates that the diesel 18-wheelers, vanity sports cars and monster toy trucks are emitting 30 feet from his bed. As well, now there is talk of scrapping AirCare. At the rate our car-mad culture is growing, it looks like not too many people care about air quality. Our Conservative government is grovelling to big oil, backing off environmental commitments and recently pushed through such a mass of regulatory changes that none of us looked, or understood half of it, if we did. Water now retails for more than gasoline by the litre and comes in a plastic bottle. Our bosses are gutting my children’s future, and ◗Smokers Page 7

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Smokers not the problem ◗ continued from page 6
no one seems to really care about our environment as long as they have a nice home, a collection of automobiles and a leaf blower. Despite all this, stopping us from using legal, heavily taxed and regulated tobacco is the big concern? If I smoked for a week, I couldn’t raise a cloud that would match that of the average truck driving one block. Why pick on a neighbour, a friend, a relative or a stranger with an addiction? Why don’t these non-smoking advocates fight the real fight with the big polluters? Of course, the smoker is the easier target, aren’t they? After all, unlike the big polluters, we are out and exposed in the open, on the edge of the sidewalk, shunned and ashamed, where you can all look down on us, right where you’ve forced us. Not wise to borrow big
Dear Editor: 18.
Re: City moves ahead, The Record, July
IsourdirectoroffinanceGaryHolowatiuk serious? In his reply to the borrowing of $59 million, without the majority consent of the public, he makes several statements that I find both incredulous and enlightening. First, “We don’t have to borrow anything if we don’t want to.” So why do it? I think there are a lot of people in this city also capable of borrowing vast sums of money and increasing their debt load because interest rates are so low. So why don’t they? Because, given the many economic factors, it is prudent at this time not to. Perhaps Holowatiuk might contact his counterparts in Stockton and San Bernardino, California
and ask them why they now regret borrowing huge sums of money that resulted in their filing for bankruptcy. Second, Holowatiuk says that the city has undertaken alternate approval processes in the past for the police building (still paying for this one), Moody Park outdoor pool (still paying for this, too), Westminster Pier Park (absurd that they pat themselves on the back for being over budget) and the Centre for Community Achievement (never even heard of this one). Because it has been done in the past doesn’t mean it was right then, and it doesn’t make it right now, Mr. Holowatiuk. Negative approval may be legal, but it is certainly not honourable. Combining this process with the fact you are conducting it in the middle of summer holidays, and the entire process becomes shameful. Last, and I think the most insightful quote in his explanation, is the apparent admission that they all know this project will lose money, and they are planning for that eventuality. His statement, “When the office tower is sold, we will repay the short-term loan debt to the extend possible and convert the balance to long-term debt …” clearly says that the business plan (if they have one) they have created anticipates the building will be a financial loss to the city. On this very statement alone, mayor and council should vote this bylaw down and take it to the people. Where is the empirical data to support his pie-in-the-sky forecast that this venture will create $50 million in revenue over 50 years? If this were true, the city would indeed have had developers lined up to build the tower as the mayor led us to believe. or two). In the meantime, it’s unclear how the provincial government will deal with Day’s clinic. The commission has said it will seek a court injunction if it detects any further evidence of extra-billing. However, the financial penalties contained in the Medicare Protection Act (the provincial statute that specifically outlaw extrabilling) have yet to be proclaimed into law, and at $20,000 aren’t terribly onerous. It’s likely this stand-off between the clinics and the provincial government will still be in place next year, which means Adrian Dix and the NDP would
inherit this headache should they form government. Dix has said he would proclaim the penalties into law and would vigorously oppose Day on philosophical grounds (he also favors returning to patients any money they paid through extra-billing). Dix has also said he would enforce rules barring physicians from working in both the private side of health care and the public system. That may force doctors to choose sides, and the impact on private clinics when it came to retaining their physicians’ services could be interesting. Like any other service, human resources are a key component of any health-

There are only so many doctors and nurses (and shortages exist in many areas of care) out there, and if too many work in the private side of health care, that could make wait times in the public side even longer. So get ready to hear a lot from Day in the coming months. His fight has been going on a long time, but in many respects, it’s just getting started. A celebration of loyalty ADVENTURE...
A HILARIOUS ROCKIN’
BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER email@example.com
A crowd gathered at Queen’s Park on Sunday to celebrate the first B.C. Loyalist Day in British Columbia. The four Pacific regional branches of the united Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada – Vancouver, Chilliwack, Thompson-Okanagan and Victoria – gathered to celebrate B.C. Loyalist Day. The provincial government declared July 22 as Loyalist Day in British Columbia. The event gave the groups a chance to celebrate their Loyalist ancestors.
“Many British Columbians are direct descendants of the first Loyalists who arrived in what is now eastern Canada in 1783 after the American Revolution,” said a press release about the event. “Following the French settlements in Acadia and New France in the 1600s and early 1700s, there was second major wave of immigration starting in the 1770s. The number of Loyalists varies depending on which historian you cite, but it is estimated that 50,000 to 100,000 displaced Loyalists came as the ‘first boat people’ to what is now
Canada. These were British subjects who had originally settled in the 13 colonies but were more loyal to the British Crown following the start to the American Revolution. The patriots would go on to win the war. These new settlers were called the Loyalists and are considered Canada’s first political refugees.” At the July 22 event in New Westminster, the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada read a proclamation about Loyalist Day, unfurled the Loyalist flag and enjoyed a picnic.

Music fest coming
Popular regional event gearing up at Deer Lake BY MARELLE REID REPORTER email@example.com
Avid fans of blues, roots and folk rock have just a few weeks to go before one of the region’s most popular music events kicks off at Deer Lake Park in neighbouring Burnaby. The Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival is set for Saturday, Aug. 11 from 2 to 10 p.m. Headliners are the Indigo Girls, the American folk duo of Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. The lineup also includes blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughn, older brother of the late Stevie Ray Vaughn; Mamadu and Mariam, a duo from Mali; American blues/jazz artist Kelly Joe Phelps; singer/songwriter, rapper and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello; as well as Canadian bands Deep Dark Woods, the Washboard Union and No Sinner. Last year about 8,000 people attended the festival, with k.d. lang being the major draw as headliner. This year, organizers expect to see about 5,000 in attendance. “It’s kind of a much more musician-centred festival this year,” said Cory Philley, facility and event services coordinator for the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. “The Indigo Girls are definitely the headliners and we love them to bits, but they’re not necessarily a k.d. lang, who could sell tickets just on her own. So you’re really buying into
the whole program, and there’s some really great musicians that are coming, and a variety of them; anything that could appeal from 20-somethings to 60somethings.” Besides the variety of musical talent on stage, the festival also features artisan displays, food vendors, and a kids’ arts activity zone from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. for the youngest members of the crowd. Philley said the event draws many locals, but also visitors from the U.S. and Alberta as well. “People come out on a Friday night and they’re just going to spend the weekend in Vancouver, essentially,” she said. “So they come for the festival for the day and then go on to do other things on the Sunday in Burnaby and in the Lower Mainland. It really becomes sort of a destination for a lot of people.” With several thousand people in attendance, Philley said organizers have upgraded regulations for this year’s event to make sure the atmosphere is as enjoyable and fun as possible for everyone in attend-
ance. New for this year is the maximum size of coolers, at 56 cm long, 38 cm high, and 38 cm wide. Also new for this year, no chairs with seats higher than 20 cm will be allowed. Deer Lake Park has general admission lawn seating with no reserved seats. Gates open at 12: 30 p.m., and the show starts at 2 p.m. The west gate closes at 6 p.m., and the main gate closes at 9 p.m. Parking near Deer Lake Park is limited during the festival, therefore organizers encourage ticket holders to use alternative modes of transportation such as taxis, carpools, bicycles and public transit. There are bike racks on site, and there will be a free shuttle bus service available from the BCIT campus (pay parking in effect). Advance single tickets are $70 and a pack of four is $200. On the day of the festival, single tickets will be available for $75. Children 12-and-under get in free with an adult. Call the box office at 604-205-3000, or visit www. burnabybluesfestival.com.

Bonding and laughing through math BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER
She wanted to volunteer with Big Sisters but didn’t like the idea of daylong outings. So when Kerry O’Donoghue heard about the organization’s study buddy mentoring program, she knew it was the right fit. The program nurtures the self-esteem of girls by matching them with volunteers who tutor them. “That was my strength, I felt,” O’Donoghue says about her ability to tutor. “I knew I could help with that.” Through the program, O’Donoghue, who has short, spiked hair with dark bluish/purple ends, was matched up with then 14year-old Gabrielle Martin. The pair started meeting once a week for about an hour a time so that O’Donoghue – who writes resource material for Science World and teaches dance – could help Martin with her math. “It was so different in the beginning. It was just like a tutor thing, but then we ended up getting to know each other, and I would be so excited to go and do math, (I’d say) ‘Oh ya, Kerry,’” says Martin, a bubbly teenager who lives in New Westminster, but attended Byrne Creek Secondary in Burnaby. “I would just laugh.” “How many libraries did we get told off in,” O’Donoghue says. “We had to move out of libraries because we kept getting told to be quiet.” Along with math lessons, there has clearly been a lot of laughter between the pair over the years. They’ve grown close enough that they actually do call each other sisters, though it’s a statement that takes people aback, given that Martin’s Caribbean features contrast with O’Donoghue’s Britishbackground. “Even now, she’s not like my tutor, she is like my big sister,” Martin says. “Like whenever I introduce her to people, (I say), ‘This

Sisterly love: Gabrielle Martin, left, and Kerry O’Donoghue do math homework at the Columbia Street Starbucks. They came together through the Big Sisters of B.C. Lower Mainland’s study buddy program, which matches girls with volunteers who help tutor them. The pair took a brief break from meeting a couple of years ago when O’Donoghue gave birth to her daughter, who’s now a two year-old named Matilda. They continued to get together as friends and eventually turned back to the books, which paid off. Martin graduated last month, and O’Donoghue was there to help celebrate. “Even emotionally, just knowing that I have someone other than my family, knowing somebody outside actually cares about me – another adult,” says
is my big sister Kerri.’ And they’re like “Uh …” “I’m like can’t you tell the resemblance?” Martin adds, playing along with the scenario. They both laugh – loud enough to see why they no longer frequent libraries. Instead, the pair meet every Tuesday night at Starbucks on Columbia and Sixth streets. Martin gets serious for a minute, looks at O’Donoghue and says, “You did become a mentor.” “We became more than just study buddies,” she says.
Martin. “It’s really nice to have her take time out of her day to actually come to my graduation and cheer me on.” “Really loud,” they both say at once with their trademark laughter. One funny story that O’Donoghue notes is that for years, she didn’t tell Martin her real age. The Big Sisters then-coordinator of the program warned O’Donoghue that Martin didn’t want a “boring” math tutor and her mom had dragged her in. “She’s dead set against it. Don’t tell her how old you are,” the Big
Sisters coordinator told O’Donoghue. At the time O’Donoghue was 39. “I remember I had my big 40th birthday, and we all went to Vegas, and I couldn’t tell her,” O’Donoghue says. “For years, I was telling you I was (in my) late 20s,” O’Donoghue says to Martin. “She probably thought I looked old for a 20-year-old.” O’Donoghue only confessed her real age when her daughter was born. “I kept going on about being an old mother; she’s like, ‘You’re not too old to

Juniors go up two in semifinals BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR email@example.com
The New Westminster Salmonbellies are one win away from a spot in the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League playoff final. The junior A Salmonbellies looked ready to take on the league’s best following a 17-9 victory over the Delta Islanders at Queen’s Park Arena on Monday. The win gave the Fishmen a 2-0 series lead in the best-of-five semifinal playoff against the Ladner club. “In terms of today, I think this is the most complete game as a team we’ve played since I got here,” said second-year Salmonbellie Reagan Harding. “You can see the camaraderie coming out. Everyone’s buying in. We have a motto and it’s ‘All in’.” That motto was carried out to the fullest in the second game of the series following a 14-13 overtime win in Delta on Saturday. Nine Salmonbellie players collected three points or more in the win, including Harding and intermediate callup Chase McIntyre, who both garnered hat tricks in similar five-point outings. Keegan Bal also contributed five points to the win, including a pair of back-to-back tallies midway through the second period that effectively put the home team in charge of the game. Luke Gillespie also garnered a hat trick from the left side. “That’s what happens when you’re relaxed. It carried over from the last game,” said Harding, who scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in Ladner on Monday in a five-goal, eight-point showcase. “We just got to keep playing ’Bellies’ lacrosse – hard nose.” Kyle Dobbie and Justin Goodwin chipped in with four and three assists, respectively. Becker, Brandon Goodwin and Reid Mydske, with his second
play coach winner Tony Malcom. “It was just one of those games, the shots we were taking were just going in,” Malcom said of the championship final scoreline. “It was just the best team effort of the year.” Team 1 goalie Bianca Ballarin had a perfect slate at the provincials, allowing just 10 goals in five games played, including New West’s 5-2 win over eventual bronze medallist Burnaby in the semifinals. Katie Browning from Team 2 was named the bantam girls’ MVP.
History will have to wait another four years for the Canadian junior world field lacrosse team. After handing the United States its first-ever defeat at the world field lacrosse championships, Canada was forced to settle for the silver medal following a 10-8 loss to the U.S. in the gold-medal final in Finland on Saturday. The Canadians, including goalie Ross Bowman of New Westminster, handed the United States an 11-9 overtime loss in the opening game in the elite division at the 2012 world under-19 championships on July 14. The win ended a 24year unbeaten streak by the Americans, which began when the u-19 world championship was first held in 1988. Canada parlayed that win into a first-place finish after round-robin play. The Maple Leaf advanced into the championship final following a routine 15-4 win over England in the semifinals. The U.S. avenged a second earlier pool defeat to Iroquois Nationals, earning a spot in the gold-medal final with a subsequent 127 victory. In the final, Canada and the U.S. ended the first quarter locked in a 2-2 tie. But the Americans outscored Canada 4-0 in the second period to lead by four at the half. In the third quarter, Canada clawed its way back to 6-5, but could not get the deficit any closer than one goal the rest of the way. Ryan Tucker scored the 9-6 game-winning goal for the U.S. late in the third quarter. B.C. representatives Wesley Berg and Reegan Comeault both scored in the final frame for Canada. In other placement matches, Germany, with New Westminster resident Jonathan Rachfall, upset host Finland 7-6 in overtime. Scotland prevailed over Wales 11-8, with local defender Allan McLucas and attack Jimmy McBride providing much of the scoring offence for the Scots.

Armed and ready: New Westminster’s Quinn Mackay, in white, had a goal and one assist in the junior Salmonbellies’ 17-9 win over Delta in Game 2 of the best-of-five semifinal at Queen’s Park Arena on Monday. goal on just three shots on goal in the playoffs, also had three-point nights for the junior ’Bellies. New West got out to an early 5-1 lead following a pair of goals by lefthander Josh Becker. Delta flirted with a rally into the middle frame, but Bal’s pair, including New West’s first of two shorthanded goals in the match, sparked a four-goal Salmonbellie rally that put the home team in a comfortable six-goal lead. Starting keeper Frankie Scigliano had none of the firstgame jitters he exhibited in the
opening semifinal, looking solid with a 35-save effort. Game 3 of the junior semifinal is back in Ladner today (Wednesday), beginning at 8 p.m. Harding, who learned his lacrosse in Saskatoon, has been on fire in the playoffs to date, averaging more than six points per outing and leading all front-line attackmen with a nearly 36-plus per cent scoring average. The final-year junior currently leads all playoff scorers with a post season-best 14 goals and 13 assists, eight points better than
Bal, who boasts a playoff-high 14 helpers. “It’s my last year of junior lacrosse. I don’t want to lose,” Harding said, referring to last season’s close series loss against Coquitlam. “In the playoffs, there is a different feeling about it. It’s just something, I don’t want to let the team down. I want to do it for the guys I’ll be graduating with and for the other guys.” The junior Adanacs could wrap up the other semifinal against the Langley Thunder tonight (Wednesday) in Coquitlam.
New West girls win five medals at B.C.s BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR firstname.lastname@example.org
New Westminster remained on top of the girls’ box lacrosse scene, winning two gold medals and five in total at the B.C. Lacrosse Association provincials in Nanaimo last weekend. The league champion New Westminster junior 2 team dodged a couple of near season-ending bullets to win its second consecutive junior banner following a 7-4 win over Coquitlam No. 1 in the gold-medal final. The junior 2 team made it into the provincials
through the back door and then just qualified for the medal round after losses to eventual bronze medallist New West 1 and consolation finalist Nanaimo. Hayley Parker was the hero of the preliminary round, scoring the gamewinning goal in a 6-5 overtime win over Coquitlam that was enough to ultimately secure a berth in the semifinals. In the semis, New West 2 edged New West 1 by a 21 score on Amber Hayley’s game-winning goal with just 3.8 seconds remaining in the game. In the final, New West jumped out to an early
3-0 first-period lead, but Coquitlam came back to knot things up 4-4 heading into the final 20 minutes. “We talked about how much we didn’t want to lose it. We pretty much got pumped up,” said secondyear New West 2 goalie Alex Lund-Murray. “There’s a lot of pressure for next year. But it feels pretty good. It’s pretty unbelievable to be part of something like this.” In the junior consolation final, New West 1 easily won the bronze medal with a 7-1 win over Nanaimo. Kirsti Shanks from Team 2 and Jessica Goodwin
from Team 1 were New Westminster’s junior girls’ all-stars. Selam Eyob and Sadie Gerhardt earned the fair play awards for their respective junior teams. New Westminster teams dominated the bantam final, with Team 1 winning 8-1 over its Royal City counterpart. The two teams also played earlier in the tournament with Team 1 eking out a 5-4 win on Haley Penner’s overtime gamewinner. “We’re all good friends. It was good both New West teams made the finals,” said bantam fair

Nicole Del Grosso and stand-in goalie Sam Landolt earned fair play mentions for New West. The bantam 2 team earned a spot in the provincial final with a 3-2 win over Ridge Meadows. Katie McDonnell and Nadine Stewart both scored for New West, while Brittany Shuster tallied the game-winner. Landolt, who stepped in to play goal for New West 2 at the provincials, was outstanding, registering three wins, including an 8-0 shutout against Burnaby in the team’s opening game. Malcom also coached the New West peewee girls to a silver medal, despite two close losses to Coquitlam and Burnaby in preliminary play. The peewee girls earned a spot in the final four with a 4-3 win over 19-1 regular season champion Ridge Meadows. Erica Malcom tallied the game-winner in the victory. “It was great to beat them (Ridge Meadows) in the round robin. It was a highlight for sure,” said coach Malcom. New West earned a spot in the final with a 9-4 win over Coquitlam 2. All-star Andrea Serbanescu scored six times in the semifinal. But taking a second straight win over

the league champs proved too tall an order for New West following a 7-3 loss to Ridge Meadows in the final. Every single player did the best they could,” said Malcom, who singled out Linnaea Cassidy for her hard-working play. “They had a good year. I’m proud of them.” Sara Gaber earned the fair play award for the New West peewees. Malcom also praised the leadership of the successful girls’ program in New West. “All the credit goes to Jamie Stewart and Warren Goss. They do a phenomenal job,” said Malcom. “They are really fair and the girls are really enjoying themselves. To have two teams at every age group is just great.” New Westminster also had two teams in the midget division, but the No. 2 team lost 6-5 to Port Coquitlam in the bronzemedal final. The midget 1 team defeated its New West clubmate 7-3 in the opening game of the provincials. The team then dropped a pair of one-goal heartbreakers to Ridge Meadows and PoCo and failed to qualify for the championship round. Breanna Croxen and Ellelen Degife were named New West’s midget fair play winners.

Just when the Western Lacrosse Association playoff picture appeared darkest, a glimmer of light has appeared for the New Westminster Salmonbellies. The senior A Salmonbellies kept their playoff hopes alive with a 12-7 victory over the visiting Nanaimo Timbermen at Queen’s Park Arena on Thursday. The win temporarily lifted the ‘Bellies into a fourth-place tie with the Burnaby Lakers, a team that looked anything but playoff-ready following a 10-5 loss at home to the Coquitlam Adanacs on Friday. At Queen’s Park, New West kept the pressure on Nanaimo all night long, leading for much of the first two periods, marred only by a 34-second advantage by the T-Men in the opening period. The Salmonbellies took charge in the final frame, opening up the game’s first multi-goal lead in the first minute of the third period on a goal by Jeff Zywicki. Less than five minutes later, third star Alex Gajic registered his second goal, and first of two, in the final period to send the ‘Bellies into the lead for good.
Gajic and Corbyn Tao, with his second goal of the game, scored less than a minute apart at the 14-minute mark to put the win away for the New West club. “We just came out with a lot of tenacity. We could see from the warmups, (Nanaimo) didn’t want to be here,” said Tao, the game’s second star. First star Ilija Gajic led the home team with five points, including a pair of firstperiod goals. Tyler Richards was on form, stopping 40 shots in the New West cage. The badly needed win, two points that a week or two ago might have been challenged as too little, too late, might well be enough to secure the defending regular season champions a spot in the post season. But, it’s still far from being a done deal. The ‘Bellies must win their last two games – a Thursday night at Queen’s Park against the Coquitlam Adanacs and the league finale in Maple Ridge on the Sunday. “We’re just focusing on what we can do,” said Tao. “The league’s a lot tighter. We put ourselves into this position and we’re going to work hard to get ourselves out of it.”
Worlds: Attack led Scotland in scoring ◗ continued from page 19
McBride, who led the yellow division in pool scoring, finished the playoffs ninth in overall scoring with 11 goals and 13 total points. Trailing Wales by six goals in the second quarter, McBride sparked the comeback win, scoring four of Scotland’s
goals before tying the score 6-6 in the fourth period. McBride tallied a fifth marker later in the period before teammate Nathan Collingwood’s game-winner. McBride also scored four times in a 10-5 win over the Netherlands in the playoff semifinals.
